I am from out of town, and it is my usual procedure to stop by local shops to ask what's biting and where to go. Sometimes an angler can walk away feeling like the owner or employee sincerely wants them to catch fish. This guy, who was most definitely the owner, not so much. Those of us who fish know there is a certain type of proprietor that runs these businesses. The could be called The Fly Fishing Snob; unfortunately, not a rare breed. They are masters of crass, subtly indignant interactions with customers. They attempt to vaguely mask their censorious attitudes with false congeniality, but eventually their true motivation peeks through: to make the customer out to be a neophyte, even when all they asked was for a good place to fish. I want to be clear. This guy is probably a very knowledgeable person and could even be a nice person. I know I was being friendly and truly attempted to have a good interaction. My comments are based of undeniably picking up on his righteous attitude. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Otherwise looked like a quality shop. read more

One of the reasons I moved to Ashland was the Ashland Fly shop. Visiting Ashland, I went to the Ashland Fly shop because fly fisherman should always visit local fly shops. Fly shop was well stocked, mostly what I considered high end, no Cabelas's stuff. Will the boss was super friendly with a "know it all" sense of humor. I wanted to know about fly fishing in Southern Oregon. Will described opportunities in Southern Oregon and Nothern CA. I told him I was old and all about easy access. Of course he told me about float options, all kinds. I wanted wading options mostly. He showed me options on a map, then sold me the map. He promised that when I was ready to fish he'd get me into easy access. He kept his promise and his shop provided regular Spey casting lessons for free on the river. I visit the shop because I can get good equipment, good advice and they will go all out to find the stuff you want. They are not limited to their "regular" suppliers. Might take a little time, but they will get it for you, even little stuff like a drying patch with a safety pin instead of Velcro . Though I don't like bashing any brick and mortar fly shop, I think that it is important for people to know my experience with AFS. Twice now I have ordered tarpon flies from them and each time they sent me flies with problems. The first time they sent me flies where the eye was filled with mono and cement. The second order, they sent me a fly where the weed guard was way too short to guard the hook. When I called them, their reply was "send it back and we will send you another one". That would cost me more that the fly was worth. Some of the people there are really nice and helpful, whereas others not so much. read more

In April, I ordered two pairs of black socks that were a specific brand. I received two pairs of white socks of a different brand than my order. When I asked if I could return them, since they were not what I ordered, I received an email asking if I could wait to return them until they could send me a corrected order. I agreed to wait. In July and in early August, I emailed them asking how I can return the incorrect order. It is now the end of August and I have not been sent a corrected order, nor have I received an email with return instructions. I will never order another thing from this company. read more

I recently had a great experience at AFS. I brought in my boxes of the steelhead flies I use on my California home rivers. Keenan reviewed them and told me which he thought would be good on the Rouge and which he thought would not be so good. He then recommended a few flies from their selection to round out my collection. No loading me up or pressure, merely sharing his recommendations. He then went a step above and marked my Rouge River map with a few places to start me out, since I'm new to the Rouge. Two days later, at one of the recommended spots, a friendly guy rigging his Spey rod began chatting and offered to show me the run he was going to fish. It turns out KC also works at the AFS and was fishing on his day off. These guys live and breathe fly fishing! This is exactly what I want in any store. This is my second visit. Each time I was fortunate enough to deal with Kieth. Very friendly, knowledgable, and honest. I've been to other "chain" stores (Cabella's, Bass Pro, Sportsman, etc.) trying to find decent customer service. Here, Ashland Fly Shop is a "mom n pop" style shop that takes care of your needs without worrying about making a sell or pressuring you into something you don't need. I asked Kieth to hook me up with gear for Spey casting. I'm fairly new to fly fishing and he knew this. Kieth didnt try to put me into the most expensive rod, reel, or other equipment. Nor did he try to play on my inexperience with Spey to make the store more money. He simply said "this is best to start out with. When you get more experience, then think about possibly upgrading." It's refreshing to have someone actually "listen" to you and build gear around your level of experience. Most importantly, he made me feel like one of the family. He was excited for me to fall into the realm of Spey casters. I believe that knowledge, experience, honesty, and friendliness makes customer service...Ashland Fly shop hits all the marks spot on. How can you go wrong with a store that gives FREE lessons on fly fishing/spey casting without you ever spending a dime in the store? You simply can't!! Its putting your needs before theirs. Not only did they give us some great advice on flies, rigging, and access points...they also loaned my girlfriend a pair of waders and a rod & reel for free! These guys are the best in the state if not the nation, no exaggeration. They take personal to a new level by getting to know their clients and customers both local and international. You can really tell by how they treat you and how you see them treat others. So they can help you pick flys for the local watershed or they can send you across the world with a professional guide. They are directly associated with Fly Water Travel and set me up with a guide on the Rouge River, they always know the best guides to go with. I had an awesome time! The Ashland Fly Shop is in a central location in downtown Ashland. It carries a wide selection of flies, rods, reels, books, clothing and fly tying materials at rack rates. The store is clean and the inventory is nicely displayed. My complaint is that next to the register there are fly fishing stickers which included one that was borderline pornographic and grossly demeaning of women. When I pointed out that this particular piece of merchandise was inappropriate and offensive to female customers, the shop manager said he would "make a note of that." Via this review, I am also noting this for potential customers. read more
