If they ever make an Animal Crossing/other free open world game based on Berkeley, circa 2014-2018, I would be one of the NPCs that you find at Asha Tea House (alongside other NPCs like "that man with the German shepherd who tried to hit on two of my friends") New cohort of inductees into the club/cult I spent half my time on? Time to bring them to Asha. Needed a place to talk about a club presentation/club general meeting/debrief after a club meeting/check-in with some club officers? Asha, Asha, Asha! (My unpopular quests would mostly be related to finding volunteers for different events).
The tea aroma and caffeine of Asha got me through countless midterms/finals, last minute papers, and late nights at the lab (is it because people like me would camp out here for hours on end that they no longer offer wi-fi?) The owners have done an amazing job of picking out the decor. Asha is perfect for both trendy hipsters and disheveled students.
Moving on from the integral role Asha played in my social and academic life...They used to be expensive in comparison to the other local Berkeley boba shops, but with the arrival of Ucha/Yifang and the generally increasing cost of living, I think that's no longer the case. (Though I did notice a few specific price bumps that seemed to correspond with the arrival of the owner's kids). At the core, they have higher quality tea and fresh fruit: their default sweetness is less easily confused with a glucose tolerance test than most other places (I disdain you, 7leaves). You can always adjust your sweetness/add simple syrup to your taste. Over the course of 8 years, I think I've tried every one of their fruit purées and teas.
I usually don't get boba anymore, but back then: I never got pearls at Sharetea (because their pearls were tasteless, soggy rubber rubbish), and sometimes went to Ucha specifically because their boba was uniquely fragrant and chewy. Asha's boba is solidly reliable. It's generally well cooked and slightly sweet, not the softest or firmest. I've never had a (fresh) Asha pearl that was uncooked/hard on the inside. They don't really do different toppings - their other topping is grass jelly, which I personally prefer to be a little sweeter and dessert-like than the more herbal version they have here - so you should be here for the tea.
My favorite fruit drinks:
- Strawberry jasmine milk tea: I love strawberries, and I love jasmine milk tea that's not too sweet. This is my all-time favorite
- Blood orange oolong: this is my go-to when it's is in season! They don't let you add it to milk drinks anymore, but I really enjoyed the way the slight cream of the milk paired with blood orange's sweet/tart fragrance
- Lemon jasmine: my friend once called this hot lemon juice, but I loved getting the hot unsweetened version whenever Berkeley chilled my heart or I was physically sick. The iced version is very light, refreshing, and a great summer drink.
- Blueberry green/oolong/jasmine: the first and best one I had was very tart and one of the best drinks I've ever had at Asha (but usually it's a more mild variation on just sweet. Since it's usually in season at the same time as strawberry I don't get blueberry so often)
- Raspberry jasmine/oolong/green: this is very punchy and tart! Very refreshing in hot weather
- Kiwi green tea: I personally like the kiwi chunks and chewing on little seeds. I think I would wish it was a bit more sour, but I think this was a relatively unique flavor + it has a more pure kiwi flavor profile (not the super strong flavor you get from an artificial syrup)
Other drinks
- Their matcha is very generously green; the pre-mixed, layered look is iconic. I personally think it tastes better with no sugar because this brings out the matcha flavor better
- Hong Kong milk tea: this was the first place I ever tried HK milk tea! In general, I don't like black tea as much as I used to and if I drink this too fast on an empty stomach I get a little nauseated (again, I think it's the black tea and this is a me problem I've had at other shops if the black tea is strong). Objectively it's a very smooth, silky, delicately sweet drink with an extra caffeine punch (the coffee HK milk tea is similar, just more acidic/acerbic because of the coffee)
They no longer have a loyalty program (though I had countless strawberry jasmine milk teas for lunch this way), but as the unquestioned representative of my college experience, they will always have my undying loyalty. read more
