My entire life flashed before my eyes when my external hard drive slipped out of my hands and plummeted down toward the concrete below. It hit the ground with a sickening crack that sounded like bones breaking. I dropped to my knees before it and sobbed while gently caressing its battered corpse. I may have dramatized that a bit, but that doesn't make it any less traumatizing. My ability to Google my way out of any problem is nothing to laugh at, so despite what had happened only a moment ago, I wasn't the least bit worried. NOW'S a good time to start worrying. Any DIY tutorial involving computers is about as clear to me as Ancient Egyptian. I visit the Genius Bar so frequently you'd think they actually serve drinks there. And the answer to your question is "no," the Geniuses only knew enough about what was wrong with my external hard drive to tell me to "go to a professional." At this point, I knew my destiny: the expensive option, the "hard drive data recovery services" option, the take-it-to-some-guy-who-knows-how-much-trouble-I'm-in-and-will-hold-my-data-hostage-for-thousands-of-dollars option. Over the course of the next week, I misplaced my wallet so frequently it seemed abnormal. I suspect the little guy was trying to run away from me. I spent Saturday night speaking to representatives from data recovery companies all over California. If you're feeling socially inept, you have the option of just picking the company with the nicest-looking website and shipping your device over to them, but I wanted to make sure the people who rip me off don't sound like creeps and at least laugh at my jokes. My recovered data was transferred to a brand spanking new external hard drive and delivered directly to my doorstep in about a week and a half. If you are reading this review, your head is most likely still spinning, your modern day fight or flight reaction activated, you have probably repeated a phrase like, "I am so F#CKED" upwards of 300 times... I can empathize. I am a photographer and videographer. I work with digital media on a daily basis, and it is my job to make sure that what I have shot gets saved and backed up. Occasionally, this process goes haywire, and irreplaceable moments in time are lost, out the window, poof. In the last 4 years, I have had 2 Compact Flash (CF) Cards go bunk on me before I could back up the media that I had just shot. Because it was the card, or the card reader, the media corrupted, and became unrecognizable by my camera or computer. The celebrity interview I had just shot, and could never hope to manufacture again was gone. The first time this happened, I spent all night downloading programs to recover the data, meddling away in a world that I didnt care to understand, my ego screaming in utter terror that I would never be hired again if I couldnt recover the video I had lost. All the files were corrupted. Perhaps it was the card reader, perhaps the card just died - i had no way of truly knowing. I found ASAP Data after spending a sleepless night and making little progress, downloading freeware that then wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars and capitalize on my desperation to recover my footage. So grateful! If you loose data on your USB drive, go here!! I've done my research. You'd think that a USB might be simple, because they are small and so common, but not a lot of places service USB drives and if they do, they may not have perfected this type of data recovery or they give up up too easily. Before I found this place, I had another data recovery place tell me that my data was unrecoverable. Another place was going to require me to mail my USB and gave me a low end price of hundreds of dollars above what I paid. RIDICULOUS!! But ASAP got all of my files back for me! : ) ASAP Data Recovery is just that, I got my data recovered quickly. I dropped my USB off on a Thursday afternoon, received the diagnosis on Friday, and had my data back Monday afternoon (they're closed on weekends) and I didn't pay for the expedited rate. Daniel was extremely cordial and very responsive. Everything is in email, they explain everything clearly, and if they can get your data, they will double confirm if you want them to proceed. I liked this part especially. Via email, they will send you a link and you can see names of your folders and files that are on your data storage device (I didn't have any software, photos, or music). REMEMBER, you may be a bit frazzled from having lost your data, but before you go, be sure to have another data storage device available so they can transfer your data. Dishonesty runs rampant when competition is scarce, and there's little doubt you'll be overcharged if the company you hand your computer over to is the only one that provides hard drive data recovery services in your area. Fortunately for you and I, Los Angeles is home to an unusually high number of data recovery companies, and ASAP Data Recovery, in its life-or-death struggle to win over clientele, will be honest and won't overcharge. Two aspects of my overall experience with ASAP Data Recovery that I think are worth mentioning in this review are how they were open to working with me on a price fair enough for the both of us, and how I didn't have to pay them a penny if I was even a little bit unsatisfied with the results. Excellent to do business with! I'd dropped my portable HDD, and I knew it bad enough that it was out of my expertise to fix, so I went on a quest to see who could help. I came to ASAP after having been referred to them by Dory from Watt Computer Repair, as he said he'd dealt with them before and had good experiences. So I went there and met with Daniel at the front desk. He was friendly and knowledgeable, and very clear about the process and the cost involved, depending on the extent of damage. It all made sense to me so I put down my deposit, relinquished the drive and hoped for the best. While some people need their data right away, I was in no rush; mine was mostly sentimental value so waiting was fine. During this time, Daniel kept in communication with me, providing updates every so often. In the end, only a portion could be recovered, and much was corrupted. Even still, I was given a breakdown of exactly which was which, was able to review it all myself, as well as ask questions, which were answered quickly. Ultimately, what was recoverable was still worth it to me, so I agreed to the terms that had been set and paid the full amount for the recovery, and bought a HDD from them to put the data on (their prices for a new drive are totally fair and on par with what you could get elsewhere, so the convenience was ideal). My micro SD from my Samsung Note 4 was suddenly showing ALL my 2 yrs of pics as being corrupted. Went to one mobile store, he told me it was IMPOSSIBLE to recover!!! All of the sudden my external hard drive stopped working and I had all the important data in there from many years. I couldn't afford to loose it and it was not saved anywhere else. I run a small business and all the data my employees and I work with is stored on a raid 5 server with 6 drives. One day, my world came crashing down when the server suddenly stopped working. My experience with ASAP Data Recovery - Timeline of events: June 2017: Went to ASAP Data recovery for a corrupted SD card from a wedding I shot. Their service was outstanding, and they were able to recover 90% of my card including the most important videos. Daniel was understanding, responsive, and provided updates. July 2020: One of my external HD's stop reading/engaging the discs. I made the error of thinking I could fix it myself watching YouTube. Big mistake! These guys are amazing! I had a terrible glitch that caused all four of my hard drive back ups to reformat. I called around to every data recovery place in town and got quotes between $2,000-$7,500 with no guarantee that any of my data would be recovered. They also were the only data recovery place that told me they would not charge anything if they were unable to recover any data, or if I wasn't 100% satisfied. The USB cable connection was loose, and this resulted in my hard drive no longer connecting to my MacBook, but my warranty was still good. ASAP Data Recovery recovered 100% of my files for a VERY competitive price (believe me, I shopped around). What convinced me to go to them was their FREE diagnostic test and quote. When I got the quote, I realized I wouldn't get a better deal anywhere else. I also received great customer service while I was at their office. The bonus is that I got my old hard drive back in one piece, and now I'm ready to send it in for my warranty replacement.
