The fruits are fresh, the cake is moist, and the frosting is whipped just right. The cakes are not too sweet. I also ordered the roll cakes to give out for Christmas gifts ($5 each). Asian bakeries always have the sweets that I like. Custard buns, full cakes, green team rolls - everyone has favorites you can't find in a traditional bakery. At very affordable prices, Asahi Bakery is a classic example of a hole-in-the-wall giant. But what really makes Asahi my number 1? The coffee jelly. We've all had sweet coffee before - Starbuck fraps, Vietnamese iced coffee, tiramisu - but to me this is embodiment of coffee as dessert. In little plastic cups, you spoon into strong coffee flavor with the mild sweetness of jelly. You have the milky sauce on top to blend in the sweetness, light but almost as hard hitting as condensed milk. At barely over a dollar a cup, I haven't had anything as simply good as this. For that item alone I'll make the drive over and get a box. Every one of my family and friends have loved it. Heck, even a grandmother mistook it as a sauce and somehow elevated her cream puffs! Yummy!! Was at the bead store nearby and happened upon this bakery. We had the green tea sponge cake, coconut bun, and the custard bun. All $1.50 each...such a great deal! The sponge cake was very soft and fluffy with the perfect amount of matcha. I feel like some bakeries that use matcha use wAy too much. Not here! Coconut and custard buns were also delicious. The bakery itself is pretty underwhelming...very traditional Asian bakery though. Coming from San Francisco, it made me feel at home. It also looks like they do a lot of custom cakes. I went in on Saturday morning to buy a Taro cake for party, it was yummy and not too sweet as the American cake. I also want to try their Japanese cheese cake, so I got one too. Before I decided to buy, I even asked the lady if the cheesecake is freshly made or from the previous day, because it's the last one in the case and she said YES. But after I tried it, It was hard, no taste and seem stale. I think it's been sitting there for a week? I don't know how often they make cheese cake. But I'm so disappointed with that. My family has been buying and eating cakes from here for the past 20 years or so. We have always ordered the fruit chiffon cake that has remained consistently good for the past couple of decades. My parents bought a cake for my college graduation and brought it down to Tucson for my sorority sisters and I. These girls are from all over California, where they've tasted great Asian desserts, and they all loved this cake. You don't have to go anywhere else for candles either. They've got great customer service, and will offer some candles to you too. Bao Buns. Yum. One of the very few places that you can get Bao Buns in Phoenix, and they are both delicious and big! Not only this, but they are only $1.30! The buns are about the size of a fist, and are steamed, not baked (the man behind the counter noted that some have tried to bake the buns at home, thinking they were uncooked, later complaining that the buns were now tough, haha). I got the BBQ pork bun. The pork was very good and tasty, with a sweetness to it. Will be back for more! I also bought some almond cookies. These cookies are pretty big - about the circumference of a CD. They are not moist cookies, more like a biscotti, but lighter. The man behind the counter was very helpful and answered all questions. Though I've been to sweet republic many times, I had never stopped in asahi. They close early in the afternoon, so often times they are closed when I visit. Anyway, a few friends and I stopped in to give this place a try right before they closed (sorry guys!!!). They let us sample some almond cookies, which were delish! We bought a few pastries from their large selection and enjoyed them as well. Apparently, this place also makes cakes and other pastries to order. The Japanese cheesecake is to diiiiee for. I live in Denver and come here when we are in Scottsdale on vacation. I got a taste of this place during Phoenix Matsuri with their coffee jello and steamed buns. The first time I had either in my life and oh my GOODNESS, was it a good first impression! So when I found out I lived not too far away from the bakery itself, I had to floor it over and try some of their other goodies. The sponge cakes in the case are amazingly soft and just nicely sweetened. Coffee jello is still my favorite thing there, and the cheesecake is crumbly and flavorful. I have yet to try everything they have (including the order-ahead cakes they make), but what I have had so far hasn't disappointed me yet. This place is small and they don't have a large selection, but what they do have is very good. I recommend trying the red bean buns or the coconut sponge cake. Reasonably priced and very good. Good cake is my weakness, and while there is no shortage of bakeries in the Valley, I have found very few that serve really good cakes. I especially missed those light, airy chiffon-type sponge cakes I remember from my childhood. Then I found Asahi, and there they were - those wonderful cakes make from foam-type batter, so light and fluffy and without the cloying sweetness characteristic of cakes in most big commercial bakeries and even in small mom 'n pop ones. The bakery also makes other goodies such as cream horns, macaroons, and cookies - you can get a lot of these for not much money. The fresh-fruit cakes are their specialty and are a bit on the pricey side but once you experience the interplay of creaminess, lightness, and freshness of these creations, you'll know that the price is justified. Nice location, too -- it is in the same commercial cluster (on 16th St. and Bethany) as other well-known favorites such as Luci's, The Vig Uptown, Sweet Republic, and Capriotti's. read more

This is the go to place (almost by default I will kindly say) for the traditional Asian fruit layer cake served at basically any wedding / birthday / "insert-Chinese-event" here in the valley. Taiwanese owned, this family has been at it for years. I don't often get to their store location, but when I do, I pickup the custard cream puffs (not sweet, oddly chewy puffs) and enjoy their different steamed white buns in the bottom case. 3 stars for the pastries - extra star for wonderful service. From the name I thought this was a Japanese run bakery but in fact the owners are Taiwanese. We needed a cake for a birthday and called ahead to make sure they carried fresh fruit chiffon cakes. The owner helpfully told us that he had one mixed fruit one left but it was made yesterday. If we wanted something made today, he had strawberry. Such honesty is really rare. The store is in an old shopping center across from Texaz and looks like it hasn't been renovated in a long time but is carefully maintained. The cakes come in many sizes from 6" to 12"rounds to various sheet pan sizes. Our 8" was less than $10. They also sell pastries like napoleons and steamed buns with savory and sweet fillings. We had the cake later that night at Yasu - the chiffon cake was soft and moist complimented nicely by the layers of buttercream. read more

From the name "Asahi" which is a Japanese word, I assumed this place is a Japanese bakery like Arai Pastry in Tempe but not....which is a big disappointment as I was searching for authentic Japanese bakeries. I like Arai Pasty but it's bit far and the selection is limited compared to bakeries in Japan. So I found Asahi Bakery online and so excited to go there as it is quite close to where I live. They still have a few types of buns similar to Japanese ones incl custard cream buns. I bought a custard cream bun and coconut bun. Coconut bun was quite tasty but custard bun tasted funny like almost stale. It was very soft though. They also have some steamed buns, cakes, cookies similar to those I see at the bakery inside of Ranch L Market at COFCO. The lady working there was cheerful and friendly and told me what breads they were. Well, for Japanese bread, I need to go to Arai Pastry or bake at home for the ones Arai Pastry does not have. This is why I love Yelp. I was quickly able to located several bakeries in a few mile radius. I chose Asahi Bakery based on reviews and photos and I'm glad I did! Asahi has classic pastries as well as some Asian specialties. They also serve savory steamed buns or dumplings with chicken or pork. Visited this small bakery today, my second time. I had the baked (fluffy browned bread, not the steamed white one) cha siu bao (barbecue pork bun) and a baked custard bun. Baked Cha Siu Bao: Good except for a nasty hard piece of something crunchy (gristle? ligament?) disguised as a piece of meat in it. It was really gross, but I spit it out and ate the rest because besides that little bit of nastiness it was good. They're losing a star for this though. Custard Bun: Very good. Fluffy not-too-sweet bread with a creamy custard that had a strong vanilla flavor. Under $3 for both! They have that annoying $5 minimum for card transactions though, which is discouraging younger, frequent small-purchase repeat customers. Their sales volume would definitely increase if they would eliminate the minimum and invest in a remodel to play off of Sweet Republic's traffic next door. The older woman behind the cases was polite but rushed. She rang up my total after I had chosen the second item, which put an end to my buying anything else. To be fair, they were closing soon, but the place was dead and you would think she would want more business or encourage me to try something else. As others have noted, many items in the unlit (not easy to see inside) pastry case are unlabeled. The handwritten signs that are in the cases are faded and really should be replaced with something better (Microsoft word, a printer, and a laminator will do wonders). Umm... did I walk into the right place? This place was NOT what I expected. Yelp also let me down. Chinese bakeries hold a special place in my heart, but there's no room for this one. I also really hate giving low reviews for mom&pop places. I came here around mid-afternoon and there was really not that much to choose from (5 different types of items)... The stuff he did have was in a cake display case so old that the glass was yellowed and I couldn't see through it...or sponge cake. Being born and raised in Los Angeles, there's a lot of delicious Chinese bakeries and this one is just very meh. I'm keeping AZ in mind but I still can't... Vanilla sponge cake: -I give him lots of props for using vanilla bean... you can actually see the little black bits of vanilla bean in this -Dry on outside rim but acceptable on inside -Good amount of vanilla flavor Green tea sponge cake: -Dry on outside rim of cake, acceptable on inside -Not a fan of green tea but sometimes green tea flavored things really surprise me and I end up loving it. Did not like this one much between the dry-ness and the tea flavor. -It was a good amount of green tea flavor... but there was NOTHING else going for this cake. Japanese cheesecake -Dry... there's a layer that's mixed in with the cheese and there's another layer that is just cake... the cake was so dry that it was like eating two completely different things in 1. Not good. Conclusion -The cakes were dry...
