First off let me say that Derek Shane Salon master of color, so even when your color starts to fade - it does so beautifully because it has been layered very well to begin with. When I first went to Derek, I was very interested in getting my curly hair straightened and colored, and he did so wonderfully! Really took time to blow out all of my mixed girl curls and pump my thin hair with volume! Previously I was attending M Salon for my services, and Tiffany was great but after being situated with an assistant longer than the actual stylist; I was obliged to look elsewhere in c/o the $$$ I was paying. And upon looking at Derek's portfolio - I was instantly captivated by his visual flair for color and that was my main objective when I went to him. So, when I came back to him - Probably about a year later I had the same goal in mind: straight hair and blonde highlights, but he's an artist... And he will do his best to make sure that you have a vision of yourself that is completely unique to your own style. So, he suggested that perhaps I revert to my natural texture of curls in lieu of flat ironing my hair and damaging it with so much heat and you know, sometimes that's not an easy choice because you feel confident in looking a certain way that media suggests is pretty, but I trusted him and with that he really did help me embrace my natural beauty and with that I've been able to keep up my looks a lot longer because I am not really deviating away from what's been God given to me. Anyhow, enough about the philosophical nature of getting a new haircut, let's get to the actual physical quality of one. Derek works with perhaps two assistants when he's doing your color so you're getting a really in-depth job. Also, I remember having a great scalp massage during my shampoo. And, the cut was absolutely vital, please see my photos for more details. The color was not just a red, but it was deeply layered with purples in order for it to reflect differently in certain lights, which is great for different looks you might have in store. Update Awful color. Awful customer service. Julie contacted me and offered me a refund or to come back in and she would do my hair again. I was so upset I asked her for time to decide. Unfortunately, I became very sick and my concerns turned to my life and health. It has taken months to get back to where I feel like my old self. I contacted Julie and asked her for the refund. She referred me to her boss. Derek refused and is now ghosting me. As you can see in the picture, my roots are gray. I had been having my hair colored the color you see on my ends. I asked Julie for a color closer to my roots so it would blend better as my hair grew out. The color I got was that blackish band you see in the middle. The blackish has since entirely washed out on the ends. So even if I had wanted that dark of a color (which I did NOT), the color did not hold. What was once my long beautiful hair now looks clownish. Even after seeing the photo, Derek refused the refund. Wished me Happy Holidays and ghosted me. read more

BEWARE..... BEWARE.....BEWARE......BEWARE......BEWARE.......BEWARE....BEWARE.... I am writing this to warn others. Unfortunately, I had to learn the hard way. I was a long time LOYAL client of Derek's. The first couple of times were great then as time went on, he started to give off this mood as if he was tired and burnt out and was going to do whatever he felt like to my hair without ever explaining anything including cost. No client wants to feel uncomfortable especially when they are about to drop a couple hundred dollars on a service. After every service the price kept changing (remind you he never discusses what he is going to do or how much it will cost) after every service there was always something that needed fixing sometimes, I would bring it up and other times I would just let it go... This last time that I had my appointment June 2021I asked for a trim which I didn't get I'm not sure if he just didn't want to do it or what?! At the end of the service, I FINALLY asked what I was being charged for because again the price was different and noticed that a haircut was added even though scissors never came near my head. I was so pissed who knows how long he has been adding stuff into my bill, I had always trusted him. During that service he decided to do some new technique that he had never done before that left my hair brassy around the hairline where it was very noticeable being an all over blonde. I didn't notice it when I left because of how he styled my hair, it wasn't until a few days later but by then I was scheduled to go on vacation, which made me upset because now I had this goofy orangy color on vacation. So normally when I returned from vacation I reached out and his response was super vague almost as if he didn't want to deal, I basically got a one sentence answer. He never explained if it was going to cost me or anything. I had had enough so later that day I reached out to a fellow stylist in his salon that does really great hair and asked if she would be willing to take me on as a new client and explained what happened and she agreed that it was wrong how he had treated me and explained how every stylist should explain things to their clients. I felt better until I guess he got wind of the conversation..... then he reached out all concerned when I felt like that should have been his response from the get go... So, he apologized and said he would explain things moving forward blah blah blah. Fast forward I had an appointment already scheduled with him coming up here in August 2021.I reached out to him and asked if he had any openings sooner that my roots were growing out pretty fast and ladies, he texted me back saying that he had thought more about our last conversation and that he decided he wasn't the stylist for me. So just like that he dumps me as a client... I explained how unprofessional he was and that other people needed to be made aware of how he might be charging clients for services they aren't even getting and that I would be writing this review! He didn't give two cares and told me he only likes clients happy with his work? WTF?! So, look out ladies and ask questions when paying for your services and just pray he doesn't drop you as a client to for asking. Never have I ever had anyone ever treat me the way this guy did and I guarantee it will be the last! read more

Derek is the absolute BEST. I have been going to him for 5 years now (since 2012) and I haven't trusted anyone else with my hair since. He does amazing color!! My hair is naturally medium/dark brown, and he's kept me blonde and natural looking for years now! I've done full highlight, partial highlight, and balayage with him as the styles change throughout the years, he always leaves my hair fresh and trendy. My hair has never had that awful copper tone you see with cheap highlights (I also maintain it with purple shampoo). You definitely get your money's worth. Shampoo, cut & style was $50.00 Making an appointment was easy. Used the messaging on here. Linda was the sweetest person. I was not offered a drink or anything, although they did have a Keurig and water and chips. We chatted a lot and she was very nice. I told her I wanted a trim and layers. She shampooed my hair pretty quick. I told her I wanted my bangs to be side swept. Everything looked fine until I started to play with my new cut at home. When I parted my bangs in the front realized there was long hairs left in my bang area. I messaged the shop on here and they asked me to come in at 11. No apology or anything. Ok. Went in Linda acted like I was supposed to be there for a second time lol, no sorry or anything. She just said she was doing a smaller portion of bangs than what I did. Lol ok. So I'm sitting there and she's trying to make layers to frame my face on the right. She just keeps cutting and cutting. At this point it's a lost cause, I'm not getting an apology or my bangs to look better. Also, I would think as an owner he would check up on it ? To keep another customer coming back? Nope. I had high expectations of this place due to having read the reviews before arriving. Derek was very attentive to what I would like done with my hair and he followed through as well. The best part was the shampoo part as, for once, my neck was comfortably lying on the wash bowl. Usually I dread this part at other places because I would always get a sore neck after the washing. I've been debating on leaving a bad review for a few days just to make sure I still felt the same way....... so I go in for color, I get my hair blow dried and I ask for a trim....SHE CUTS MY BANGS!!!!! The conversation never came up about bangs, I didn't have bangs, shoot I haven't had bangs since I was 13!!! It's easy to find right on FM 518. I used the "Request and appointment" button here and got a text reply within an hour or so (they were closed, it was during the holidays), so making an appointment is easy. Derek is a sweetheart who listens and caters to what you want. Was offered drinks. He works carefully, patiently and pays attention to detail. I got coloring, cut and style. He is a master at coloring - tell him your end goal and let the artist go! I wanted chocolate brown with dimension and good root coverage (grays!) and the result was just what I wanted. My cut was layery shaggy, fun and easy upkeep. You get what you pay for, so go on payday (wink, wink), although I did spend almost 3 hrs there, and the coloring was very thorough.
