This is my local down the street Armstrong Garden center, i enjoy coming here to get soil and tomato plants. The place is very well organized, staff is informative and friendly. Surprisingly they have a very large selection of decorative and clay pots. Granted they are pretty overpriced (vs Home goods for example) but if the cost is not an issue the variety is amazing. Lots of fun little trinkets for outdoor decorating of your garden or just general outdoor space around a house. Overall well stocked store, not much of gardening equipment except gloves and shovels. But they do have large selection of fertilizers and such other plant food. They also sell Christmas trees when in season, prices are pretty competitive and their trees are high quality and beautiful. I remember getting a gift card with my Christmas tree purchase . If you bring a tree stand back you also get a discount. read more

Armstrong has always been an excellent place to get our Christmas tree, special and seasonal plants and basics like mulch. I love that once a year they have ladybug weekend during April for earth month. With a purchase, you can get a pack of ladybugs to keep your garden healthy. It's always a fun little experience to release the ladybugs. read more

OMGGG we had the best experience today! We had been driving around to different pumpkin patches looking for a large pumpkin with no luck. On our way home we thought we'd give it one last shot and called Armstrongs. Steven answered the call and said they had large pumpkins at reasonable prices so we went! Keith was super helpful in finding a perfect pumpkin to take baby photos with for our 9 mo olds first Halloween/fall experience. And Jim was incredibly kind checking us out. Have been putting it off for quite some time but now with things they way they are (COVID-19) figured there was no better time than now to plant some tomatoes. Called ahead just to make sure they were open and had available tomato plants which they assured me they did. I pulled in and as expected, the parking lot was almost empty. You couldn't go inside, but someone came right away to the gate to help me. Although I couldn't go inside, I was still able to see the available tomato plants and the person helping me explained the different varietals. After picking out a couple of plants, she suggested pots and went and picked up those as well as some potting soil. I've read others who said the pots are expensive here, particularly because of the Del Mar neighborhood. I have to admit, when I saw the pot prices, they seemed rather high, but later when I got home, I checked the prices against the same item on Amazon and Amazon was only about $1 - $2 cheaper, so I would disagree with the other person who left that comment. They packed everything up on a wheeled cart and all I had to do was take it to my car. Given the shutdown we are currently in, I would say their service is outstanding and can only imagine how good they must be when the store is fully opened. I appreciate them continuing to work during these times and the personalized assistance they gave. I will undoubtedly come back here for more of my planting needs, hopefully when the quarantine has been lifted and I can go inside. Thanks again for the help and great service! read more

I've been here twice now and the customer service is unparalleled. Both times I was found by an employee wandering the aisles and was asked in a very friendly if I needed guidance. Today I was looking for a gift for a friend who loves indoor plants but I was concerned with getting one safe around cats. The employee Melissa took great care to assess the environment the plant would be in and made recommendations from there. I was given advice on potting, watering, and what to do if the plant doesn't thrive. The only difficult part of visiting this nursery is deciding between the gorgeous plants everywhere! My wife and I have been coming to this Armstrong's in Del Mar for years. Admittedly, it's the knowledge, courtesy and service level that keeps us coming back. Today, I called with a simple issue of a pest (trail cam indicates a rat) destroying plants in our raised-bed garden. Michelle answered the phone and walked me thru my options. I visited the store and Tracie assisted me - then both ladies talked to me about the solution for our garden and were just very pleasant. I am appalled by her customer service and embarrassed to be a part of an uncomfortable transaction at Armstrong. I will likely visit the business again as their plants and flowers are amazing, but I will steer clear of that lady while I'm there. Until now, I've never had a negative experience dealing with Armstrong garden at other locations. Last week, I bought a house plant from this location. I started observing tiny gnats flying around the plant. They were in the dirt of the plant. I was sold an infected plant, and this plant infected ALL my other house plants. When I brought the plant back, I was unaware of the damage it had done to my other plants. Sure, the staff was good about the refund, but no one talked about the probability of my other house plants having a problem. Or offering a complimentary bottle of solution to solve the problem of other plants getting infected. Before I brought the plant into my home, I had healthy, thriving plants. Now, I have gnats flying everywhere. Word of advice - if you buy a house plant from here, smack the side of the container to see if gnats fly up and out. read more

Solid selection of plants and staff are helpful and knowledgeable, had to get some tomato cages for my late season planting and they had a bunch in different sizes. Also picked up a couple rando plants and seeds. I prefer Weidners up in Snitas but this place is closer to where I live now and it's got what you need. read more

Terrible management. I bought a rose bush for $50 and after planting it started to wilt. I called to see about their return policy and was told to give it a week and if it was still wilting to take a picture and bring in my receipt for a refund. When I did that, I was told that is not their policy. You need to bring in the dead plant. This store needs to train their workers better. Armstrong is extremely overpriced and I only go there with the guarantee the plants will grow. When they won't honor their own policy it is very disappointing. read more

The store is beautiful, but I was one of two customers shopping just now and not a single employee greeted me or asked my if I needed any help. I said hello to one employee, but I couldn't hear if she responded. If she did, her voice wasn't loud enough to go through her mask. There were 4 employees inside. Met Tita today for the first time, and she was amazing. Not only did she have great plant knowledge, but her knowledge of drip irrigation and water amount rates was exceedingly helpful, as I've been struggling to be successful. She was also able to correct a flaw in how I had been pruning my osteo's, so I'm anxious to try it out to see if I get better results than I have been. But most importantly, she took a little extra time with us, and in the end found the exact plants I didn't know I'd been looking for... perfect fit in size, texture and color, to blend nicely with my yarrow and agastache. Came in for 3-in-1 Rose Care, and left with Rose Care and six armeria. Thank you so much Tita, I walked away inspired and encouraged. read more

I went to an orchid class taught by Jim the store manager today. It got me out of the house on Saturday morning and I learned tons! Jim even gave each one of us an orchid to take home for FREE! I got a oncydium (dancing lady) and I was one of the luckiest ones of the attending group who got a blooming orchid; it was worth $33! I learned that oncydiums grow on lava rocks...wow! We also got a free gardening magazine which I've practically read cover to cover and am considering subscribing to. I learned that I overwater my orchids and do not give them enough light. So, I bought bark and fertilizer and went home and repotted half a dozen of them...let's hope they make it!!!!!!!! :) I also learned that it was okay to water them once/week and to alternate it with diluted fertilizer...and I learned that my moth orchids like to alternate between 50-70 degrees to bloom. I also know which orchids are in-door versus outdoor plants and which ones can do both! I'll definitely be back for more of their Saturday classes! There's even a May 30th one on re-potting orchids...classes on water conserving gardens, tomatoes, container veggies, and even a BBQ on March 28! Armstrong even takes one-gallon plastic containers and recycles them for you...(I actually don't have a need since I like to use my plastic containers to gift plants/flowers). It's a little cool even though it's inside so I recommend bringing a sweater and one lady brought a thermos of coffee with her...good idea; I'll have to be that resourceful next time....the group was very eclectic there...there were guys...and women of all ages... I also bought a beautiful, bright yellow cymbidium...the color is so cheerful and I know just how to take care of it now...I'm a happy plant mommy now! read more

I wanted to write this review for my local Armstrong Garden because the staff here is amazing and they have plant varieties that I can't find anywhere else! Hudson has helped me so many times to pick the right citrus and avocado plants for my garden--he was very patient as I describe to him my garden dispositions and needs. He's awesome! Also, they really live up to their guarantee on shrubs I've purchased there. I've killed more than a few gardenias and they happily replaced them...though I do spend quite a bit here and these are they only ones I can't seem to keep alive. And yes, they are more pricier here than Lowe's and Home Depot, but I do think their plants are higher quality and I do believe in paying more for knowledgeable staff! You get what you pay for. read more

Came here today with my mil! She is the queen of gardening. I'm not I really have a green thumb. I was around for moral support and to pick out some nice plants. The first thing that bothering me about this location was we couldn't get into the driveway cause they were dropping off a load of soil. They didn't bothering moving at all. We finally got past them and get into the outside. They had some really nice things I was waiting for one of the Armstrong workers to come out and help us but it was a ghost town! I didn't see a worker the entire time I was there. The second thing that bothered me was the prices! I get it is Del Mar and most people who love in the area are loaded but damn 60-70 dollars for a plant with a pot seems pretty steep to me. The pots were ceramic and more for someone who is really into custom pots that cost 50 bucks. Sorry Armstrong I left you for Home Depot! read more

I live in Irvine and today I called the Armstrong garden centre on Walnut and Culver . My question was regarding a grape vine plant that I had bought at this shop about three weeks ago. I was concerned that it was not growing in spite of following all the planting instructions. The lady on the phone was very rude with a tone that sounds not helpful at all. i just started a garden with my little girl. i love living down the street from armstrong. the minute i started looking at the big soil bags, a worker came by and asked me (even before i bought it) if i wanted some bags put in my car. very nice touch. this place always has a quick present for a house warming gift (a planted flower/orchid), all the way to all the seeds needed for a new veg garden. good service, tom is nice in front. good parking, and a very nice outdoor garden to choose flowers/plants/gnomes! read more
