My friend and I were going to a scuba shop near by and just so happened to miss it. It was like fate because when we parked the car we were right in front of Solana Succulents! At first, it looked like a really small nursery and then there are some stairs you walk down and BAM. So many plants! I believe they are priced in what kind of pot they are in. It was really hot that day and I noticed that quite a few of the plants were dried up, some even dead. My friend and I cruised around and I ended up leaving with two new plants. Side note, they take card at this location and there is a restroom just up the stairs. read more

This place is succulent heaven!! So many amazing succulents jam packed in a gorgeous little shop. We spent over $500 on some unique finds including a beautiful massive elephant's foot and a unique wish list pachypodium!! Loads of smaller, rare but super affordable plants. I could have easily left with twice as many plants but my dogs and child need space for the road trip home. read more

This place is a labor of love for the friendly owner, and a dream-come-true for the succulent enthusiast. I've stopped by here many times to browse the inventory, and came by most recently to inquire about a cutting that a friend had given me. Jeff was intrigued and offered to help me identify it. It was apparent that I wasn't buying anything on this visit, but that's just the kind of guy he is! So not only can you get great plants, including many that you cannot find elsewhere, but you can get all the information you need to make your succulents thrive in our beautiful San Diego County gardens. On weekends during the summer, parking can be tricky. But if you are patient, you will certainly find a place to park nearby. Hey, the short walk will do you good! Just drive slowly along PCH and something will open up Solana Succulents definitely deserves five stars all around for both the products and the service. Can't believe I've never been here before and I've been to almost all nurseries in San Diego. I love places like this. Tiny, hidden, messy and packed wall to wall with plants. The owner is really nice and knowledgeable. I love a rare plant so of course I always go for the pricey and weird stuff. They have a lot of more "common succulents" for the beginner but also tons of really unique stuff. Also some nice creepy looking ceramics to go with your weird cactus. They have some larger specimens as well as tons of smaller stuff. It's really a paradise for cactus and succulent lovers alike! My only complaint is that I wish I had known about this place sooner! Lovely selection of exotic and healthy plants nestled in the heart of Solana Beach. This place is amazing and you don't know it until you actually walk all the way in! This place has the biggest variety of succulents I have seen yet! If you are looking for a unique or rare succulent, I would recommend checking this place out! I found a cathedral window Haworthia that I really enjoyed and ended up taking it home! I'm not certain, but I believe every succulent and cactus in the world seems to be represented here, and for the most part, they're for sale. A nice owner, and fun place to walk around near Solana Beach, whether or not you buy something. Be careful, we got pricked by a few cacti walking around. The presentation makes the store as fun and pretty to look at as some public gardens, and doesn't seem like a store at all, but more of a passion or collection. read more

This place is a tucked away, hidden treasure. It's best to park in back and walk in through the back. Plan on spending an hour in here easy! So much to look at and small plants to find...tucked away in little crevises. Jeff is very knowledgable and always has time to talk to you about plant care. An amazing collection with a kind-hearted enthusiast. I enjoyed my trip from La Jolla to Solana beach today to explore a rare niche of a succulent store tucked away in a seemingly small alleyway. Much to my surprise, the alleyway housed what is obviously a wholehearted passion for rare and not so rare succulents as well as lots of special one-of-a-kind pottery. The owner (Jeff) was happy to explain the care and odd tendencies of his succulent babies...many of which are propagations of his own doing. He knew about each plant--their origins, and how to give them a fighting chance in my own back yard. He was even kind enough to autograph his book for me--a read that I have been enjoying for several hours during this 'post-Christmas' relaxation time. I am happy to say, it was great seeing such a lovely succulent collection and to meet someone who is excited to share his knowledge and 'addiction to succulents'. (2) This place is sooooo f'ing cool. You could almost bring a book, kick back, and hang for the day. (3) The prices are perfectly reasonable (not 'boutique' prices) (4) There are plants (and pots!) here that you won't find anyplace else (5) The owner is just a super chill guy who loves plants. plain and simple. Solana Succulents is not so much a business or store. Rather, it is more akin to a private residence with a massive potted plant collection focusing on drought-tolerant desert species. Jeff Moore is the owner and was the only person on staff. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and gardening with an eye for detail. He nurtures a wide variety of cacti, agave, aloe, and succulents of all varieties including dozens of species you will never find in normal stores. Some of the plants are very old but healthy, and they are reasonably priced for their size and rarity. I spent about an hour here enjoying the collection and talking to Jeff about a variety of topics. In the end, I left with about $80 worth of beautiful plants and a big smile on my face. Thank you! Note that the "store front" along the main road is merely the entrance to the garden. Explore deeper into the property to find the office area and the rest of the collection. If you are buying a lot of heavier things, there is parking in the back to load up. read more

The sign in front said "Solana Succulents," so I know I was in the same place as the other reviewers. That said, I have no idea why my experience was so different from theirs. Much of his inventory was in dire need of water, and many plants were so dead they had shriveled and blackened. Nothing is organized, and several large plants with sharp projections made passage difficult at best. The owner didn't seem to want to be bothered helping us much (when my wife told him what she was looking for, he said "Oh, then you know what you want" and walked away). His prices are on the high side, but the quality of his inventory certainly doesn't justify his prices. He isn't the only succulent vendor around, and we'll be heading back to Leucadia for ours. A very disappointing experience. read more

Went by yesterday and was blown away by Jeff's awesome collection and knowledge on his product. Things to note: The pricing for the plants is posted in the middle of the garden up high. Jeff has put prices on different sized pots so you can reference that at any time. Take your time. The gems aren't always the easiest to find so plan to spend at least 30 minutes browsing the large inventory. Make sure you request extra info from Jeff. Jeff is a very cool guy. He responded to my emails right away and had a great selection on what I was looking for. The location is in a neat part of town so I recommend checking out and getting a few of this choisiest plant then head down for some pizza or a smoothie. He gives great advice on plant care and you can tell he really has a passion. After reading the other reviews I knew I was either going to be greatly impressed or super underwhelmed and guess which one it ended up being?? I walked in through the front entrance and there was a sign clearly stating to watch yourself so you don't get pricked by cacti, so they had that going for them. I'm a huge succulent enthusiast. I've started a nice garden in the front and have a collection of rare succulents inside, so when I go shopping I look for both the rare and the common. It looked more like somebody's overgrown, under-organized, hoarding situation than it did an actual shop or nursery. A lot of the plants were sunburned to a crisp, under watered, or just plain neglected, sad, and pathetic. Have you ever seen Harry Potter? You know the Room of Requirements when it turns into that massive, crap filled closet with stuff piled everywhere?? That's what this looked like. The small 2, 3, and 4 inch pots were so sad, just sort of a stick stuck in sand (NOT what you wanna plant your succies in, by the way). They weren't even arranged or organized in any particular fashion. A few on a table here, maybe 10 dilapidated succulents over there, 4 sunburned and melted lithops over here. They were also WAY over priced. $6 for a 3 inch succulent that looked like it was going to be a rescue plant? I think the eff not. I frequently visit North Country Roots Nursery in Vista; beautiful, well cared for succulents that are $.75 for a 2 inch and $1.50 for a 3 inch. The cacti and agave like plants all seemed to be in pretty fair shape, but then again those are kinda hard to kill unless you overwater them. The man working there asked if I needed help and seemed pleasant. It was an interesting experience, to say the least. They have a few absolutely MASSIVE cacti worth seeing, but I will definitely not be going back. read more

Since my fiancé has picked up an interest in succulents, we're always on the look out for more to add to our collection. We've learned that the more interesting and unique succulents are found at the smaller shops rather than your usual Home Depot or Lowe's. This is how we ended up at Solana Succulents on a Sunday afternoon. As soon as you enter this little nursery, there are succulents everywhere! It was hard to narrow down which ones we wanted to take home with us so we'll probably be back. The owner, whose name I didn't catch unfortunately, knew each plant we picked out and gave us tips on watering and how much sunlight to give.
