I stopped at this little dusty hole in Bowie, TX off hwy 287 for the night. There was a little restaurant named The Armadillo Grill. I decided to give this place a try and to my surprise it was great. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mash potatoes and the armadillo toes. My order was cooked to perfection, sometime you get those chicken fried steaks that are undercooked, not here. The breading was crispy, light and seasoned well. The steak and mash took up the entire plate, also the couple across from me ordered some hamburgers and they looked great, very good size as well. Now the Armadillo Toes are jalapeno peppers stuffed with cheese wrapped with bacon and grilled over an open flame - absolutely right on, these were very good. My server was very friendly and never left me for to long. I would definitely recommend this place and I can't wait to pass through Bowie, TX again. read more

Nice road side eatery with a store and gas station. Had the BBQ plate with brisket and sausage. Two thick slices of tender brisket with a good portion of smoked sausage, not spicy. BBQ sauce served on the side more tart than sweet. Served with a serving of cowboy beans and a bit of cole slaw with a mayo and vinegar dressing onions pickles slice of toast. Food was very good service was friendly and fast. I would stop again! read more

Although it is attached to a truck stop the vibe is not of a truck stop. The prices are very fair for what you get. This is by far the best restaurant breakfast I've had in 10 years. Absolutely perfect in every way, the staff is wonderful, the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable what more could you want! Disappointing all around. Went in for Sunday breakfast and wish we hadn't. Mediocre service, weak coffee and tea, and out of biscuits--who runs out of biscuits? When our food finally arrived, it was a tasteless mound of eggs, cheese, sausage and peppers (scrambled country skillet). The salad was basically a wedge of iceberg with dressing and the drinks were weak. The only stand-out was the pancake I ordered in place of the sold-out biscuit. Service was slow despite there being only a handful of people in the place. Our waitress didn't know the wifi password and made no effort to obtain. The place could also use a nice dusting--the dead flies and crickets on the windowsill didn't add to the ambience. Pretty obvious whoever owns this place is skimping on food quality and employees. I have worked at armadillo grill for many years. One thing I must point out is how very wonderful they treat their employees! We are so happy and it's truly a second family. I will also say how proud I am to serve the unique and home made food the same beautiful women prepare starting at 4 am everyday for 11 years. And that is not an over exaggeration!!! We love the ones who keep our country running and without them we would not have yummyness to serve..... That is all of the drivers! We understand the hard work you do and the hard work your families endure waiting for you to come home. Please give us a try! No stake in it from me but the love, the humor, and the big personalities that await are defiantly worth a stop and see! Just stopped in by chance and we are so pleased that we did! Clean and well decorated. Friendly, expedient wait staff. The menu was a bit difficult to pick thru, but offers a wide variety of sandwiches, salads and dinners. We shared the pot roast dinner that came with real mashed potatoes and carrots and homemade rolls. As well as the vegetable plate, your choice of 4, we had fresh green beans, corn, okra and Texas style pintos. Large portions and everything was steaming hot and fresh. Very reasonably priced too. The wait time was next to nothing even though there was a large table and a few others at the time. We were very impressed and will probably return on future trips. read more

Called this place to see what time they close. They told me 10:00pm. So me and my wife,daughter got all ready and when we got there at 8:30 they said they were closed. We were really upset. We went back the next night to give them another chance. The waitress never brought our apps. When we asked her about it she said she don't remember us ordering them. I'm a truck driver and I ran across this place. And I'm glad I did... There good is the bomb!! Everything from there dinner salads to there ribs is to die for... Five stars for the best sirloin steak I've had in a long time. Cooked exactly like I asked, well done, and very tender. The side salad was very fresh. The baked potato wasn't completely done or may have been sitting out a while. My other family members enjoyed their steaks, too. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The only let down was the chocolate pie for dessert. At $4.99 a slice, we were expecting something close to homemade. I was shocked to see a small slice of a very inexpensive frozen pie from the grocery store. I bought one of these pies at the grocery store once and I think I paid $1 for the whole pie! My son-in-law said the peach cobbler was delicious. I will definitely go there again, but will not order pie for dessert! read more

This is the best place to eat supper in Bowie, Texas. My wife had a great old style hamburger and I had a very good chicken fried steak with good batter and creamy gravy. The waitress was friendly, funny, and prompt and the price was right. I would have given it five stars if I could have had a drink with the food but alas, no beer or wine. I will return. read more

I don't make it to Bowie often, but when I do, I try to always stop at Armadillo Grill. The food is always fresh and delicious and comes out timely. The dining area is kept very clean, even during the busiest times. And you have the nicest people working there, especially Hillary. This is one of my favorite places to eat. Two friends and I were in Bowie on business. I locked my keys in the truck and Bowie PD was kind enough to get it open for me. We asked the officer for a recommendation for dinner. He suggested the Armadillo grill. It was a Saturday night and we were able to be seated immediately. Our server was above and beyond courteous and efficient. The food was amazing and my steak was just as I had ordered it. My friends thought the food and service was excellent as well. Horrid! I feel decieved. We ordered the "Armadillo Toes" after reading the hype of the reviews. The one slice of bacon they were wrapped in was as thin as a piece of paper. However the worst part was the steak. We were talked in to ordering the 2 steak special with an appetizer because it was the special. In the menu they put the steak as aged 21 days. Make it sound real appetizing! Blah! Was about the same quality as ponderosa. GROSS! What a waste of money. Also the service was so-so. read more

We procrastinated and went 20 minutes before closing. Most food places close around 10 o'clock in Bowie(just an FYI). The first waitress was a woman with long curly brown hair. We looked at the menu for about3 minutes and she came back and asked if we were ready. I said no, we've never been here before. She said(very rudely) WELL, I am asking because we close in 20 minutes. I said I was sorry and we ordered. She trumped off outside to go smoke with her husband(or boyfriend) and the taller short haired woman took care of us after that. She was polite and nice. She brought the food and it was really, really good. I had chicken tenders and a baked potato(which by the way was cooked perfectly!!). I don't normally like country gravy, but theirs was really, really good. Their rolls were also delicious. The tea was perfect and we had the sundae served in a baked tortilla shell for dessert. It was amazing. A huge party came in and the rude waitress came back. All the while the other one was waiting on everyone while she piddled around with a broom and acted like she was busy(muttering stuff under her breath the whole time). I thanked the tall waitress several times and she was super sweet. I also thanked the cooks as they left.
