Friendly, customer service oriented eye doctor! Dr. Schwartz has taken care of my son, daughter, wife and I for many years! She's a fantastic doctor! My son had gone snow boarding and fell back and bumped his head. He immediately started having vision problems with one eye. He went to Dr Schwartz who diagnosed a detached retina and referred my son to a specialist to get laser surgery. Dr. Schwartz helped save his vision in that eye. The three stars and for the doctor and staff. Even though i like them i have two major problems with this place. First of all, the first appointment they give you could be at 6pm because they are trying to get your business but then when they have it you will never be seen at 6pm. They never tell you this. Second issue is whoever makes their glasses has no idea what they are doing. After paying hundreds of dollars for glasses they were still not the right prescription and the doctor would not give me my money back. I went for a check up like 10 times (no exaggeration) and still lenses were wrong. Will never go back there!!! read more

I can't say enough about my visit with Dr Schwartz and her staff! The staff is friendly and professional and will steer you to the right choice of frames suitable for your face. The helpful critiques were much needed as there are many choices of frames. Lots of fun frames as well as your classics. Dr Schwartz's exam was beyond thorough! My family has been a patient of Dr. Schwartz for over a decade. I've seen Dr. Schwartz both in her office in Queens as well as her home office in Merrick. We've been thrilled with the care we received in both places. I can honestly say that we all look forward to our trips to see Dr. Schwartz! Two of my three kids (ages 12, 10 and 7) need glasses/contacts, and she and her staff have been wonderful in dealing with their various needs. My 7th grader started wearing contacts this year, and the office was extremely patient with my son's stubborn determination to wear them, but difficulty with putting them in and taking them out. After a few sessions, success! And when I followed up with Dr. Schwartz to let her know that he was able to do it on his own, she was sincerely happy for us all. She really cares. Dr. Schwartz attends all of her patients with professionalism, warmth and good humor; she really listens to your concerns and issues, and never rushes your out of her chair, or makes you feel like you are "just" an appointment. I cannot say enough good things about her. In the event of an emergency, she can always be reached, and will do her best to squeeze you in, even if her schedule is already tight. She has an amazing work ethic. Not only does Dr. Schwartz wear a variety of really cool glasses, she also carries a great stock of interesting, name-brand, modern frames. We've gotten all of our glasses and contacts (including bifocals, many pairs of sports glasses, sunglasses) through the office, and I have to say, it's worth every penny. Because when you buy your glasses through Dr. Schwartz, any time you have a problem with them (need an adjustment, etc), you can bring them back and they will fix them for you. They just want you to be happy and healthy. What more can you possibly ask for in a doctor?????? read more

Dr Schwartz is great--professional, patient, thorough, pleasant. Her receptionist is also very nice and responsive. The main optician, though, lacks client-facing skills! Our family spent close to $900 in frames and lenses, but when I went back with an issue, she was curt and impatient. If I have an issue that only the doctor can handle, explain that to me! Don't just say (after not even bothering to sit down with me): "Well, make an appointment with the doctor, then!" I'd go back to the doctor, but I'll buy my glasses elsewhere. read more

You can tell when somebody is a true expert, just as you can tell when they really care about you. Both are true in Dr. Schwartz's case. wow - found a gem! finding a good doctor is worse than trying to find a husband, so what a relief to find this place. never had an eye exam quite like this one...usually you are in the exam chair for like 5 minutes...it's like a motor vehicle eye test...not here - this a real eye exam! very impressed. - and walked out feeling truly examined. they took my insurance which was great. I called ahead - I had to leave a message, but I was called right back by a friendly staff person and not rushed off the phone - which explains why I left a message - they don't rush you to answer a ringing phone. I appreciate that. don't you just hate when sales people and secretaries keep saying "hold on" or 'just a minute' to go answer a phone? I'd rather wait and be paid attention to properly - full focus if you will. for a small space the selection was outstanding for frames - lots of designers and options. pretty good pricing too....'cause glasses can get pretty expensive! First-time visit for an eye exam, scheduled for 10 AM. Receptionist showed up a few minutes before 10 and first began the process of rolling up the gate and unlocking the office. Entered and gave my name. Receptionist shoved paperwork under her shield, and I was told to fill it out (I came prepared with it completed in advance online) - clearly she was not yet settled in and it showed - she really seemed put out by my showing up on time for the visit. Next she demanded my medical insurance card. I questioned the necessity of this for an eye exam. Informed that the doctor would need it for any medical procedures she would perform!! Really, I was there for an eye exam! When I told her that I had no intention of having procedures at this time without prior consultation, therefore, I didn't bring my card, she demanded to know if I even had medical ins! After all this, Ms. Schwartz still had not yet made an appearance. Not knowing what time she intended to arrive (no call from her to advise), I left to keep an 11 AM meeting - I am punctual. Ms. Schwartz: first, my time is as valuable as yours! Second, this went beyond being hungry for business - this was pure greed to assume you would be performing "medical procedures" on my eyes before you even examined me! No one is going to tolerate this rude, inconsiderate treatment - certainly, not me! Medical professionals and their staff need to display compassion!! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Arlene Schwartz for over 10 years. During this time there has been significant but natural changes in my vision. I am 62 years of age, and my myopia improved as i aged, although my reading vision did not. The good doctor is always careful and thorough with my examinations, and checks the lenses when they come in to make sure they are in fact what she prescribed. When I have concerns she answers them fully, so I can understand just what is occurring with my vision. In this day of optical corporations, where opticians rule, you would be doing yourself a great favor by visiting this experienced physician who truly examines your eyes. I have found in the megachains that what you encounter is sales personnel where business seems to come before your healthy vision. Here I have the feeling I am getting the kind of doctor's care, which is no longer so common. read more

I was just here yesterday afternoon for a routine eye exam. Last year I went to Malik eye care a couple of blocks away from here and they were horrible. They didn't do a full eye exam. I was referred to Dr.Schwartz by a co worker of mine. Once I walked in the vibe was very positive. The receptionist was very polite and professional. I also didn't wait long. Once I saw Dr.Schwartz I was nervous thinking she would be rude like the other eye doctors I've been to. But no. She was full of smiles and laughter. I can also see that she is very caring for her patients. Dr.Schwartz did a full on eye exam. I have never felt so comfortable with a optometrist. I would not go anywhere else but here. I've been going to Dr. Schwartz on Metropolitan Ave ever since she opened a couple of years ago. It was the most thorough eye exam I've ever had. She was the first to ever dilate my eyes. I must have been going to the wrong places in the past because the exam would be a quick 15 minutes and I would leave with a prescription for glasses and that's it. Dr. Schwartz checked the health of my eyes and checked for eye related diseases. Since it was my first thorough eye exam I was curious and asked a lot of questions. She was very patient and explained everything to me. Turns out she was a teacher at Suny Optometry. So by looking at my dilated eyes she can check for indications of glaucoma, brain tumors, diabetes, etc. All things I didn't know about! Now I get my eyes checked by Dr. Schwartz once a year. I also go to her office for issues other than glasses like weird eye bumps, puffiness, redness. Her office gets quite busy at times and it can be a long wait but it's worth it because her exams are very thorough and she takes her time with each patient. The girls who work there really know their frames. Trust them, they can pick the perfect pair of glasses to fit your face. They have a great selection of frames from high end designer to very very inexpensive and everything in between. There was a time when I went there unemployed and they were able to pick out a very inexpensive pair for me which still looked great. They do not push you to spend more money than you wish to and prices are very reasonable. Last year my mom suddenly started seeing floaters so the office was able to squeeze her in for a last minute emergency visit. Dr. Schwartz detected a retinal tear and referred us to a retinal specialist. We went the next day and my mom had to have laser surgery for the tear that day. Dr. Schwartz also detected the beginning of cataracts in one of her eyes. She also detected a macular hole in my mom's eye. These all happened at different times during different exams. And sure enough when I take her to the ophthalmologist they always agree with Dr. Schwartz's findings. Even though my mom now has regular check ups with the retinal specialist and ophthalmologist I still have her checked by Dr. Schwartz for glasses and for her other medical eye issues because she is very knowledgeable and takes the time to patiently explain to me what is going on, different options for treatment, and possible outcomes. These are things that the retinal specialist and ophthalmologist don't take the time to explain to me. In short: Dr. Schwartz cares about her patients. She is more than just an optometrist who prescribes glasses. Her exams are very thorough. Her office is clean, modern, bright, spacious. The girls who work the front desk have a great eye for frames. There is a big selection of eyeglasses and sunglasses at all price ranges. I highly recommend. read more
