There isn't a massive saturation of craft breweries in Alaska like in states like Washington, Oregon, California and Colorado but there are quite a bit more breweries in the state than you may think too. Arkose Brewing was a brewery Steve got to try when we were visiting Alaska last year. We shared the Mandarina Moose Grapefruit IPA which was pretty good. Perhaps not the best grapefruit IPA I have stumbled across but not bad. The cirtus notes and malty flavor made it enjoyable enough. If I ever do get to try beer from this brewery again I think I'd like to try a stout or a porter and get a take of this brewery's version of those beer styles. read more

#thankfulThursday When the founder told me that the whole operation was ran by two people, I was floored. When he showed me an academic journal for brewers, I was ready to totally geek out. This, of course, was after I had tried a sampler with 6 of their beers. COOLEST THING: Every Thursday they do a small batch release. When I was there it was a Coconut Cranberry Macaroon Porter. And it was DELICIOUS. You ever hear people say "this is a beer for the non-beer drinkers?" Well, this is the place to go for them. The red and the stout were smooth and sweet. The Snarly was hoppy IPA but without the heavy bitterness in the back end. Above the taps the customer will find the beers on tap broken down by style. When I was there, they had light/Belgian, malty/dark, IPAS, and Barleywines. The space is clean and crisp. Lots of art and color, too. There is merchandise on sale and beer in both bottles and growlers to go. HIGHLY recommend Arkose. read more

I say this alot, but, here I go again: what took me so long? This brewery is available in bottle at many restaurants in town, but finding their beers on tap is far less common. This brewery is located in Palmer, among industrial warehouses, as all good breweries are. Beautiful views of Pioneer Peak, the Chugach, and the Talkeetnas abound! The tap room is simple and cozy. The taps and descriptions of the beers are efficiently laid out. It makes it easy to discern what styles of beer you want to drink. The beers are well-crafted and diverse. I particularly enjoyed their American Lager and Nitro Stout. read more

Best beer in town! Possibly the valley, but certainly for Palmer. A mixed selection, really covers all the flavors beer drinkers might like. Bring your own snack, but if you are looking for delicious, well made beer, Arkose is the place to go. Last and certainly not least, everyone who works here is great! Really nice space. The tap room is on the smaller side, but it is clean and modern. Really nice selection of beers, and a variety of styles. My favorite was the Ovis, which is a Belgian strong ale. Nice flavor profile! The grapefruit ipa and Susitna stout was also very tasty. Like most breweries in the area they are happy to let you sample a bit before you make a selection. Their brews are thoughtfully named, and have beautiful label artwork to match! Service was good, and we will be back. The vibe is very laid back, and it was not super packed like some of the breweries in Anchorage can get on the weekends. Definitely give them a visit if you're out in the valley! read more

We were staying in Anchorage in December and wanted to take a day trip up the Glenn Highway to Palmer - it is a pretty drive and a really good use of your 3 daylight hours during the winter. On your way back down to Anchorage you can take the Old Glenn Highway for a change of scenery! Arkose Brewery was easy to find using google maps and has free parking. They have a lot of beers on tap and tastings are $18 for 6 4oz pours. I would have really enjoyed tasting 12 beers at 2oz pours for the same price, but they wouldn't do that. It is too bad because they have around 15 beers on tap so we definitely didn't get to taste everything we wanted to taste! If we hadn't been driving we could have gotten another tasting but we didn't want to get too tipsy! The beer was delicious (we think better than most of what we tasted at Girdwood Brewery) and I absolutely LOVE the art they use for their labels! June (who is the brewer Stephen's wife) is the artist and I would have loved being able to buy some of her work (not in bottle form)! Like most breweries in Alaska, hi can only get the majority of their beer at the brewery, but Stephen said that a couple bars in Palmer also had it on tap. The tasting room doesn't have a whole lot of ambiance, but did have a good number of seats. They do have a food truck on site but it was closed when we visited. Definitely take the time to drive into downtown Palmer (it is super cute) and get some food at Turkey Red cafe! read more

Small, quaint, laid back, little tasting room. Loved that you could do a sampler beer basket and that they have a lot of different styles to choose from with great profile info so you really know what you're tasting. There is something for everyone here. My personal favorite was the seasonal shine citra blonde and their porters. Wasn't a fan of their IPA's. I'm use to more of the west coast/hazy style and theirs are more malty/Caramel tasting. This is definitely a cool place to come & check out! I would just make sure to check the hours first. We will definitely come back when we're in the area! read more

Arkose brewery is a little off the beaten path for an anchorage fellow such as myself but totally worth the trip, and I do not skip the chance when I get them. A little about Arkose, beer. Arkose Brewery located in Palmer's Industrial district is a fantastic place to swing in and enjoy a pint or fill up your growler. Probably one of the best kept secrets of the valley. Their beers are also available at local eateries in Anchorage and Palmer. You can't beat a place where the brewer pours your pint and has time to chat. read more

I normally travel to AK about 3 times per year. This was the second time I've been able to squeeze in a stop at Arkose. They are in the valley and unfortunately for me, they don't open until 2 PM on weekdays and are closed on Mondays. This ends up being a bit of a challenge for me, as on my trips, I'm normally in the Wasilla-Palmer area either on Mondays, or around 11 AM. Fortunately, on my most recent trip, I was in Wasilla at 1 PM on a Wednesday, so it worked out for me to get back. I REALLY like the beer at Arkose. I'm a big fan of English-style ales, and Arkose hits darn close to the mark. I immensely enjoyed their ESB, Porter, Extra Pale, and their IPA. Went to a beer meets chocolate tasting and had a wonderful experience. The chocolates from JB Chocolatier were simply divine and were paired very well with the different beer samplers. I would highly recommend this experience to others and I look forward to future tasting opportunities. Fun little place to grab some local beers. They have quite a selection of styles and sizes available, so it is very easy to grab a huge mug of your favorite style or test out samplers of the other beers 'til you find a new favorite. They have gear and bottles available for purchase. I really like that they bottle some of their tap only releases at the tasting room and have those available for purchase. Seating is a little tight and you have to wander to a separate hallway to use the facilities, but that's the only thing on the less than awesome side. read more

Went for the tour, stayed for the beer. They have really good beer and the owner is really into it for the love of his craft. We tried a bunch of his beers and then filled a Growler of the Green Chair. Nice family run business, a not to miss if you like beer. read more

I don't make it out here as often as I'd like. The brews are sooo tasty! And really reasonably priced. Right now they have a Raspberry Cocoa Nib Porter on Nitro and it was incredible. I hope one day they can do nitro cans or something so I can bring some of that tasty magic home. read more
