Currently in Alaska and decided to check out Vagabond blues for brunch and overall it was pretty good. I enjoyed the California club sandwich which had a good flavor with great tasting ingredients. The ham and cheese croissant was also pretty good. My kid enjoyed it and ate it all. Service was quick and decent but lacked attention. I was recommended the coffee of the day which I was told it was a must try. So I tried it and I'm not sure that it qualifies as a coffee or a drink. It tasted pretty horrid and I threw it away so that's why I'm removing a star. I would say this is more of a brunch place than a breakfast place. The menu was overwhelming to be honest and my suggestion would be to focus the menu a bit because visually it was all over the place. They seemed to have quiches and other things that change daily which some people might appreciate but I think it confuses the people working there and also the people who like whatever they had yesterday but now they can't have. It's places like this that make me love Palmer. It's a fresh little coffee house and bakery with simple, yet delicious food and delightful little environment. Super friendly staff. Hungarian Mushroom Soup is super tasty. Couldn't get enough of that delectable entree. The artichoke chicken sandwich was a little bit of a let down. The chicken was cold and chewy. Since it was large pieces, this meant you had that awkward sense where you bite into a small corner of the sandwich, but pull away half of the chicken. You don't know whether to put down the sandwich and pull the hanging half out or try to guzzle the whole thing down. Either way, there's a mess and sauce all over your face. And your general chagrin. It's just awkward. But the artichokes were delicious and the bread was super soft and flavorful. Just that awkward chicken. read more

I came here with a group prior to our day trip out to the glacier. We wanted a quick place to stop and get breakfast before our drive. The restaurant is laid back and inviting, with exciting decor from Alaska throughout. There were all types of people dining from locals to tourists such as my group. Service was good and the staff was friendly. Ordering is done at a counter and they bring your food to your table and seat you when it is ready. What a great coffee shop! I had a breakfast burrito that was very yummy. The shop is clean and comfortable to visit over coffee or a snack. It's on the main drag of old town Palmer and conveniently on the path of the parade opening for the alaska State Fair! All bonuses. I took a star because my coffee was painfully sweet. I ordered a latte with butterscotch but please only put a quarter of what you normally put in a 20 oz coffee. It must have been misunderstood because it tasted like they put extra syrup. It was undrinkable. I can never drink coffee too hot so I let it cool for 10-15 minutes before I took my first drink. I was worried that they would not make me a new one because I'd had it so long. No worries. They took it right back and made me a gently sweet latte although my cup was not the full 20oz but about 3/4 full. I didn't mind. Less milk more coffee made it super yummy. Yay! Value: In this case, value is really the product of competition among peers in this area - because the menu is in a different league than Starbucks, Peetes, etc. To that end I would say a meal and coffee at Vagabonds is a solid value for the money. It's not the cheapest place around, but for what you get - quality, portion size, etc. it is a great value. They get a star. Service: Yeah, so the staff is very professional and friendly. They are also twenty- something s or less who are clearly in sync with the younger groups who comprise the regulars. For those of us in the geriatric crowd, there is a small tendency for the crew to 'speak up and more slowly' committing some 'assumicide' as to our cognitive abilities . One of the waitstaff was so senior-sensitive once, I jokingly asked if the place carried Ensure drinks, to which I was greeted with a confused stare . Great little quick brunch spot. Primarily paninis, sandwiches, and baked goods. We stopped here on our way to Matanuska Glacier Adventures and we were in and out in no time. I had the porta bella panini with chips and my husband had the California club panini with broccoli cheddar soup. Both were warm and fresh. Sometimes vegetarian dishes can come out bland or you have to use a lot of salt to give it flavor, but my sandwich wasn't like that. It had great flavor without the extra salt/overbearing sauces. I come in at 6:20 and stand in front of the large menu for about 5 minutes deciding what I wanted. Then, I took a quick phone call while standing in front of the same menu, which is in front of the counter where you order food. I asked one of the three employees a question about a dish, to which she rudely barked that they were out of that dish. ...okay, sorry for asking. I get to the counter at 6:32 and say hello, I'd like dish xyz. "Oh our kitchen is closed". I said I've been standing in front of the menu for ten minutes and just had a conversation about food with one of the employees. First, while ordering the young person who was assisting was less than thrilled to take our order and It was not busy at the time. Have people forgotten in the service industry that customers appreciate service with friendliness and a smile? Also, it is unclear how you receive your order. I heard names being called and since we had been waiting awhile I thought we were supposed to go up to get our food. I went up to the counter and asked if our number had been called. This act clearly annoyed one of the young workers. She used a rude tone and declared she'd follow me to the table and practically slammed our plates in the table.
