Breakfast at a diner is almost always a treat. The Morning Croissant was large and most generous with its fillings but could have used some seasoning. However the Apple Pie was a disappointment. We came in here late afternoon on a Friday and I really wanted to like Grandma Mary's. Like really wanted to. And parts were very good and others lacking. Very hit or miss. Let's start with the good. First the service. Spot on! Our server was fun, happy, friendly and helpful. I can't say enough good things about here. I had the cod, beer battered, with French fried cole slaw. The fish portion was smaller than expected, but perfectly cooked, and I mean perfect. The fries were also great and plentiful. The cole slaw was creamy and tasty. Another of us got the roast beef dinner with American fries (pas fried potatoes) and the chicken and dumpling soup. The roast beef was very good and the potatoes were excellent. The soup was terrible however; it tasted more like corn starch than anything else. We didn't finish it. The other got the all you can eat shrimp with French fries and past a salad. The shrimp were good and the fries as well, but the pasta salad just meh. The restaurant itself is cute and spacious. The main issue with Mary's is that they seem to just be going through the motions. Their clientele are mostly on the older side and maybe they aren't very critical. Or maybe there aren't that many alternatives in the area. But what could be a really great place with amazing food ends up being just meh overall. What they do well, they do exceedingly well. This is a great little cafe if you want a late breakfast or delicious lunch. The menu is quite vast so you're sure to find something to order. One of my dining mates had the Granny's Breakfast which included eggs your way, a meat and either pancakes or French toast. It was really enough for two hungry people! She was happy with the food, the service and the price. I had the Reuben sandwich which came with chips. I love that the thousand Island dressing is served on the side! After years of driving past Grandma Mary's on my way to Spring Green, I finally had the opportunity to give them a try after an overnight stay. A group of ten of us dined for breakfast. I wanted a little bit of everything and ordered Granny's Big Breakfast for $7. The combo I put together was two slices of french toast, two strips of bacon, and cheesy hash browns. The meal also comes with two eggs; I don't like eggs so I gave them to a table mate. PROS + Extremely affordable + Large portions + Food isn't fancy, but solid and cooked to specification (crispy bacon was requested and received) + Seems like a town hot spot - lots of regulars that appeared to know each other + Plenty of parking CONS + Fills up fast; two of us went early to claim a large enough table and if we hadn't done that we would have had an hour+ wait + Not really equipped to handle large parties. Everything took forever from being able to order to getting our food, and one person's meal came out a good fifteen minutes past everyone else's I probably wouldn't visit with a group again, but if I needed a cheap breakfast in the area with a normal-sized party I'd have no problem going back. read more

The staff is very friendly, smiley and you can just tell they love their customers! I myself ordered a meat lovers omelet, with hashbrowns, and a side of ham. Great food in a hometown diner atmosphere. I wish we had found this restaurant earlier in our stay instead of our last full day of vacation in Spring Green. We tried several of the places in town and found them to be expensive with crappy service and the food so-so. Here was great home cooked food with generous portions at a decent price. Grandma Mary's Cafe is an awesome place to eat! The food was good and the portions were HUGE! I ordered an omelet with hashbrowns, as well as a single pancake topped with apples. When they brought my order, I was shocked at the size of the portions. The omelet alone was a foot long and the hashbrowns was its own continent. Needless to say, I only ate half of the meal - which filled me up really well - and saved the rest for an equally large dinner. The price was inexpensive. The food quality was well prepared: authentic, nothing fancy. The family working at this cafe was very polite - we talked and joked a bit - and they made me feel quite welcomed in their restaurant. With the help of my GPS, I came across this cafe after I toured Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin near Spring Green. The cafe was several miles away from Taliesin and was along my return route to Chicago, 3.5 hrs away. Even though Taliesin had its own restaurant at the visitor's center, I wanted to venture out into the surrounding community to get a feel of the Wisconsin countryside and its people. (FYI, I was currently on vacation from the S.F. Bay Area and it was my first time being in the Midwest.) This cafe was so worth it and left me with a big smile on my face! read more

Solid Small town diner. We had the big breakfast with pancakes and a veggie omelet. Huge portions... Decent prices. A little bland, but nothing a little hot sauce didn't cure. Grandma Mary catered my wedding on 9/25 and she absolutely killed it! There was no worry that there would be any shortage of food, she was very nice as well as quick to set up and take down. I am a regular here and it is always a joy to come here on the weekend. The food is great. The people are nice and have a small conversation. The demby is recommended to anyone new. There rasberry ice tea is good and the food comes quick. It is super filling and really cheap. I suggest you go there. read more

What a shame. After a long day of site seeing & driving we were starved and exhausted. Wife,our 2 teens and there friend were really looking forward to this place. I had the road beef dinner. What a mistake, Best i can explain is like fatty(chunks) of sliced dry pot roast, salad was ok, fries were good, cup of corn looked disgusting!! Brownish and just gross. I thought I was the only one that was having a bad meal so being exhausted didn't bother to complain and ruin the gals meal Waitress seemed disinterested at best considering there was only us and a another couple in the place On the drive back to the resort I found out nobody enjoyed there meals, they just ate because they were hungry. The gals all had breakfast, comments were: Sausage tasted nasty, pancakes were chewy, scrambled eggs tasted just weird. The wife and the kids friend shared the biscuits & gravy and said they were ok but just off. Later that evening they agreed that the best way the could put the taste was freezer burn. Only 2 good things to say, All 4 loved the hash browns and nobody got sick read more

Stopped here on the way out of Spring Green for some breakfast. Standard breakfast food nothing out of the ordinary but what they do is great. The place looks unassuming and has that welcome home feel to it. I had their breakfast biscuit sandwich with a side of hash browns. Homemade biscuit was nice and buttery and I between was scrambled eggs, some amazing Wisconsin cheddar, and some ham. Delicious and the hash browns had that perfect brown crust and was tender inside. Stopped in on our way through town for breakfast. There was 1 waitress and 2 cooks but no one else. We sat for 15 minutes before being asked for our drink order then had to wait an additional 10 minutes before someone came back to take our meal orders. We were there an hour before our food was finally delivered to our table. Keep in mind, we only ordered 3 omelettes. People who came in after us had orders taken and food delivered long before us. While we were there, the register malfunctioned and the waitress yelled at a customer because he was distracting her from being able to fix the problem. The one cook was drinking coffee and snacking on food WHILE HE WAS IN THE KITCHEN PREPARING FOOD!!!!! If that's not a sanitation violation, I don't know what is Totally disgusting and disorganized!!! I don't even know where to start...before this place..I honestly was not a breakfast person..and now...i wish i could drive here every day (even though its 3 hours from me) just to have breakfast. My husband and I drove to Wisconsin for business and on our way there we decided to have brunch . Wish not so many places around, we stumbled across Grandma Mary's Cafe. I quickly did a yelp search and saw that this place was rated high..so we drove into the parking lot. We were immediately greeted at the door and allowed to choose our seat. First thing we noticed was that the place seemed homely...and I don't know about you all ...but when we say a restaurant has a homely feel..its a very positive thing. The second thing we noticed was that the prices were much less than what we are used to paying at restaurants. My husband ordered an egg omelet ...i don't remember which one....and i ordered the waffles with a side of bacon and we also got their spotlighted item...the jumbo stuffed tator kegs....i then ordered their coffee because i heard a man at a table behind me saying that he's not a coffee drinker but he always drinks coffee there. I'm also not big on coffee but i'll love it if its awesome...well...it was awesome. i know, how can you say that about coffee , especially when you are not a big coffee drinker?? well..trust me...get coffee. The Tator Kegs were amazingggggggg. I do not like eggs at all..my husband gave me a bite of his eggs...and wow..i mean i didn't even realize i was eating eggs...so smooth...i don't know how to explain it lol . the bacon was awesome...everything just seemed so fresh...we didn't find ourselves bloated at all...and i'm sure it has to do wit the fact that their food is fresh not microwaved. i highly highly recommend this place !!!! read more

Stopped for dinner on a Sat evening. The food is just ok - nothing special. One of us had the roast beef dinner (no veggies - just meat, potatoes, bread) and declared it so-so. I had the Reuben sandwich and it is too salty with very little meat and kraut on it. They have a little salad bar that had fresh ingredients - with pre-packaged Newman dressings. Not too bad. We tried the fruit pies - crust not as crisp and flaky as I prefer it and my peach pie had more 'glop' aka sauce, than peaches in it. The best thing were the apple-cider donuts for purchase. read more
