After touring the Taliesin Estate, we worked up an appetite. The cafe is conveniently connected to the gift shop and where the tour ends. The space is located along the Wisconsin River and the large windows in the cafe allow for a breathtaking view while enjoying lunch. The menu is quite small which I appreciated but still had a hard time deciding what I wanted to enjoy because they all sounded so yummy. They use fresh local ingredients as much as possible ensuring that they support the local region and aligns beautifully with the concept of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a rainy day so I opted for comfort with grilled cheese and a soup of the day. The gooey cheese sandwich with aged cheddar and Gouda paired perfectly with my potato bacon soup. My friend opted for the kale chicken salad that included ingredients for a scrumptious fall salad with pepitas, cranberries, butternut squash, goat cheese and sherry shallot dressing. The set up is order at the counter, find a seat and they bring your food to you. It was a really quiet day and our food came out quickly. The staff seemed to be out of sight much of the time so if you needed something it was a little bit of a wait. It was the worst food I've ever eaten. We ordered pancakes and a breakfast sandwich. Only took a few bites. It was obvious from the taste that they didn't clean their grill. The awful taste permeated my mouth for hours after I left. Avoid at all costs. read more

For a little cafe with great ambiance, this Frank Llyod Wright designed cafe exists as the only restaurant he designed. It's really cool inside. The staff were wonderful, smiling, and kind. The caprese panino was perfect. It's a limited menu, but all high quality. A perfect place to grab a light snack while touring his Taliesin Estate or the House on the Rock. read more

We had lunch here before a noon Taliesen house tour. You order at the front counter, and food arrives quickly to your table. I tried the Uplands Cheese Puff salad and my dining partner had a Grilled Cheese with fries. The aioli served with fries alternates with what's fresh. Both dishes exceeded our expectations and the prices were very fair. Fresh cookies rounded out our meal (flavors vary). The soft classical music playing in the restaurant really makes the meal relaxing. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Definitely give this restaurant a try! read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Riverview Terrace Cafe. We were headed to the House on the Rock and figured we would just end up getting a slice of pizza at the cafe, when I decided to check Yelp to see if anything good was nearby. This place was #1, and Yelp doesn't lie. It was about 5 minutes from the House on the Rock and view is phenomenal, a beautiful view of the Wisconsin river. But most importantly..... the food was EXCELLENT! I had a very light "cheese puff" salad. It was excellent with a very light lemon vinaigrette and some cute purple flowers. My mom had a grilled cheese that came with a onion cherry aIoli. The aioli was amazing and I am looking forward to trying to recreate it. The grilled cheese was also delicious and had burnt cheese on one side. To die for. Placing an order is very simple, you order at the counter when you're ready and the waitress will give you a number. She was very kind and offered a lot of good information about the food. Most everything on their menu is locally sourced and organic. :) So if you're looking for somewhere to eat in Spring Green, do yourself a favor and come here. I feel like this place would have to get good stars just based on the fact that there doesn't seem to be anyplace else to eat in the area, but the food was very good. Everything is grown locally and the food was more artisan that I would have expected for what is essentially a gift shop restaurant. I had initially thought about heading home from our trip and eating elsewhere, but I am very glad we stayed and I think you should too. :-) read more

I went to the restaurant at the Taliesin and had a fabulous grilled cheese sandwich with french fries. The grilled cheese sandwich actually had cheese melted on the outside of the bread in addition to the inside. The outside crust was fabulous! Would definitely ordered that again. My wife had the Uplands cheese puff salad which she enjoyed thoroughly. It was a very clean and elegant restaurant looking over the Wisconsin River. Would have never expected such a wonderful lunch here. They're starting a culinary school which they started last year and are trying again this year. They plan to roll it out fully next year. You can eat lunch in a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. That alone is enough for 5 stars in my book. But on top of that, you get a lovely view of the Wisconsin River. And the food is good too. We had a salad with vegetables grown on the grounds, plus a very tasty pulled pork sandwich. read more

We stopped in on a dreary, rainy day and decided we didn't have enough time to do one of the Taliesin tours but couldn't resist having lunch in the Frank Lloyd Wright designed cafe, which is open 10-4. It is operated by the eight members of the Food Artisan Program hosted by Taliesin Presevation. Small but innovative menu featuring local ingredients. You order at the counter, find a table (by the window if you can) and your food is brought to you. I had the soup of the day (coconut curry squash) and grilled cheese (local provolone cheese and seared apples on crusty multigrain bread with a simple side salad). The sandwich was almost too buttery rich for my taste but certainly not by Wisconsin standards but it was good! Soup was smooth and delicious. We found we wanted to linger to enjoy the ambiance but had to move on down the road. I recommend you get there before the tours end otherwise you will have a long line (and not get a window table). read more

Of course the setting here is excellent--it's the only restaurant designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and sits right on the Wisconsin river with a great view. We had lunch here and it was very good. I had the Cates Farm Beef Cheeseburger which was a 1/3 pound burger on a brioche roll and topped with Marieke Cheese (an award winning cheese factory in the town where I was born, Thorp, WI). Served on the side were home-pickled pickles (cukes) and pickled red onion--the were absolutely fantastic. But the real surprise here was teh salad--it was outstanding by way of it's very light but flavorful and fragrant dressing. If they sold that dressing, I'd have bought a jar of it, it was that good. Tommy had the Southwestern (Wisconsin) Pork and Polenta, which featured local pork shoulder, braised and tender served over local corn polenta which was laced with Cojita Cheese and had and Ancho Pesto on it--which gave it just a bit of a kick. I had some and it was excellent. This place is seasonal, and is home to a Culinary immersion program. Whatever they're doing, they sure are doing it right as the food was indeed outstanding. read more

Beautifully designed room with windows all along the overlooking the river. Originally the building had been a popular restaurant, but was converted into a visitors center. This wing of the vistiors center is now a simple cafe. The food was good in quality. Vegetarian and organic choices. Simple, not too many options to choose from. We did the 4 hour tour at Taliesin and I would not recommend anything less. The property is 600 acres with multiple buildings to tour and see. The grounds of the property was very important to Frank L. Wright, because this is where he grew up. All his childhood memories are from here and you can feel the connection he had between nature and the buildings that occupy its space. His style of architecture seeks to blend with nature and frame it. He was a brilliant man and his creativity, vision, and relentless need for perfection in his eye are all here for visitors to see. I liked that we could see his home at the beginning of the tour in the distance at the brow of a hill. It immediately summons you to take a second glance because at first it looks like a rock outcropping. And then, and throughout the tour, the anticipation of seeing the house again is always with you. We started at the school, where a masters in Architecture program is still being taught here. Master students were working as we toured the building that Wright designed almost 100 years earlier. The theatre is here and the kitchen for the students. The stories about early apprentices of Franks were inspiring and memorable. Our guide said that at times up to 60 students would be here working the farm, reconstructing buildings and learning all they could from the genius. We then saw the home he designed for his sister and the property's windmill he designed and named, Romeo and Juliet. The expansive barn site was next and here our guide explained how apprentices living here in the 1940's would milk cows, tend to all farm animals and work the massive fields of gardens and crops. It was a self sufficient enterprise and everyone worked together to provide for all. We heard stories of the ponds and the bridges that once were here, but Frank had taken them out so visitors would not be able to drive directly to the home, but take in everything the home was built on first. After a short climb up an unexpectedly steep hill, we arrived at his home. Expansive, hidden, and complex. Beautifully designed, the property has much to see in details. The shutters, furniture, gardens, storage and everything is eye candy to the admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright. Walking into his studio, I could feel his prescence. It seemed like he had just stepped out of the room for a moment. I shall remember this tour for the rest of my life, it has changed me a bit more to his way of thinking. read more

Quiet enough for a conversation. Elegant enough for a romantic evening. The food is flavorful and well plated. Staff is cheerful and timely. We had one lunch after a tour of Taliesin of a warm vegetable salad (for me) and a three mushroom quiche (for my hubby). Yum, yum yum! Came back the next day after an exhausting day at House on the Rock (whew!). Both had house salad. Greens grown on Taiesin school property. Also the wild-caught salmon special. They were kind enough to substitute extra veggies for the rice for me. Veggies also organically grown on Taliesin property. I can't recommend this place highly enough! read more

So often dining establishments connected to a museum are ho-hum. Not this one. Surprisingly excellent. No drinks shown on the menu, but they do have them. Just ask. This restaurant is at the Frank Lloyd Wright visitor center near Taliesin, convenient if you're taking any of the tours there. We were there for lunch after taking the estate tour. (Yes, it IS worth it.) My husband had the french onion soup and liked it, as well as a special that day, a quiche, which he said was excellent. I had a very fine grilled cheese with bacon, so generous I could not finish it. Lovely view of the river and friendly wait staff. We lingered over lunch, enjoying the food, the view, and the people. Taliesin's been on my bucket list for years. Now we know where to dine when we come for a second visit. read more

I ordered a cheeseburger; the combination of toppings was good, but the burger itself wasn't to my tastes (well done and very charred). The fries were delicious. I decided to stop by this place after every place in spring green was closed or packed for dinner. It's located in the visitor center to the right and has seating for about 25-30 people. Nice wine list from global wines. I had dinner and the menu was fairly small and the prices were pretty spendy. Look to spend $18-30/ plate. Food was well prepared and great taste. All local meats, cheese, veggies, and desserts from local farmers and bakers. View was very nice on the river front. Overall worth the visit. Waitstaff and manager friendly and helpful. read more

August 12 dinner: the steak for three in our party was extremely tough, one said the worst they had ever tried to eat. The dinner was a disappointment for what was to have been a special occasion. Without a doubt, the restaurant is in a beautiful building and location. The views are stunning. The food, however, and the service is something else. I've never experienced such slow service, ever. The night we went there for dinner, before an APT play, really didn't have that many people. During the latter part of our meal, I almost felt like I needed to get up and clear off our own table to get the meal going and the check eventually coming. I have a feeling our waitress had really no idea about fine dining. We got the bread before our waters. We asked her if we had time for desert, and she said we did - that is, if you can eat desert and drink coffee in five minutes and still be able to enjoy it - then yes, we had time. Onto the food. Why, oh, why, oh, why does there have to be Food Fight running it? I fail to understand or believe that more local people can't run this place, and actually know how to prepare more tasty meals from locally sourced foods. Couldn't a culinary school run it, like the coffeehouse in Lakeside Fibers does? How about some of those students going to school over there at Taliesin? Any of them interested in learning the hospitality business? The food, and especially foods prepared by any Food Fight establishment, always tastes the same. The potatoes I had with my meal tasted like the potatoes they serve for breakfast - that same ready-made taste. My pork chop was supposed to come with au jus and wild mushrooms. I absolutely love mushrooms. The dictionary defines au jus as "served in the natural juices that flow from the meat as it cooks." I explained to our server that I have a wheat allergy (ie. I have celiac sprue) when I ordered my meal. She later came back to say that the pork chops are served with a gravy that has flour in it, so I will be getting my chops bare. I was stunned. Um, au jus is not gravy. I was a little concerned. My plate arrived, with the bare pork chops, the potatoes as promised, and a heaping pile of broccoli and cawliflower to replace the expected wild mushrooms and au jus - which was nice of them to do that, however, alas, no mushrooms. I was disappointed. I had to put butter on my pork chops - they were so over-cooked and dry, and there were no mushrooms to savor. How hard can it be to just cook up a little mushrooms? Or how hard can it be to make the real au jus - all it takes is a little splash of wine? It must be very hard, and makes me think everything is pre-cooked, and they're just reheating up in the back a la microwave. It was a very disappointing meal. The setting sun made up for a little bit of it, but my taste buds were not pleased. read more

Delightful and pleasant; tables overlook the Wisconsin River. Relaxed. Four item menu posted on blackboard in dining area - no need to bust the brain trying to make decisions. Food and service very good. Inexpensive; lunch items about $8. We would go there again. Open 9 AM to 4 PM for breakfast and lunch. We returned there on Father's Day, found an interesting printed menu of about a dozen items; again inexpensive and again very good food. read more
