I would agree with Glen and his response to first time reviewer. Obtaining any original replacement part for a budget price is not the way to review a repair shop. Any such part on it's own will cost more. Jonathan's personable service is unparalleled. And this shop represents a rare and dying breed of truly unique independent repair shops. Jonathan's work over the years has made him both very insightful and also a true asset to our local East Bay community. He's the person to go to first to see if keeping your old equipment is worth it and how one might go about obtaining a replacement inexpensively. He's a very caring individual. Not everyone requires this or values this. I personally think Jonathan's work is a boon to my life in the East Bay. I consider him indispensable. read more

Cluttered. Um, yes. Took time to search for a part - about one minute. Saved my old hard drive, transferred all the data and programs to a new hard drive and my laptop up and working again? Yup. Took about an hour and a half and he fixed a few other computers in the meantime while data was transfering etc. Nice guy, good prices. Oh yeah. He did this Saturday afternoon. He said he usually closes early on Saturday afternoons but he did this rush job for me. read more

I could not be more happy with the excellent customer service I received! First: I tried to get my laptop fixed somewhere else while I was out of town over the holidays - but it turned out to be a fiasco of shipping delays and terrible customer service. THEN: I went to Area Computer. Seriously, I went in right at 12:30 when they opened, he told me he would do a diagnostic and give me a call. By 4:00 my phone rang. He had done the diagnostic, had the part I needed in stock, he gave me an estimate, and I gave him the green light. By 7:00 pm it was DONE! It took him 7 hours to do what the other place couldn't seem to get done in over a month! The price was great too! I am a very happy customer and Area Computer will most definitely be the first place I go with any future computer needs. read more

John is a nice guy but his skills, knowledge and ethics are sub par. My computer's CPU fan was making noise so he swapped in what I was told was a new fan. Six months later the same fan went bad. I took the computer back and he swapped in another fan, which I was told was new. Six months later the fan was making a great deal of noise. This time I took it to Computer Connection in Greenbrae (http://www.ccmarin.com) where I was told the heat sink had been bent the CPU fan could not have been new when installed, and several screws were missing. John's dereliction cost me $90 in labor to fix John's incompetence! The fact that the work areas at Area Computer are filthy and full of junk should have been my first clue that this place was the wrong choice. read more

I had a bad 300G disk drive on my Lenovo laptop. He replaced it with a brand new 500G drive and transferred all my data to the new drive. It works great! Now my computer will last much longer before I have to replace it. I highly recommend his service. read more

Jonathan may or may not know what he's doing, but when I showed up at 10:30 on a Saturday, per his listed hours, the shop was not open. Fine. I called the number listed and he said that he'd be open at 12:30. At 12:35 I arrive and the shop is still closed and he didn't answer his phone when I called at 12:45. This is the epitome of poor customer service and fully deserves the lowest possible rating. read more

Jonathan definitely knows what he's doing and is extremely fair. He's my go-to for any computer question or concern. He doesn't mind sharing info and explaining things. And he will let you know if a machine is worth salvaging or not. The only caution would be to take notes while he's explaining things. He talks fast and sometimes changes prices later. I think he honestly forgets because he's going fast and multi-tasking. He always gives the best deal though so I don't hold it against him. I have worked with many other tech people and been ripped off enough times to know that this is an unbeatable value. read more

Jonathan may strike some people differently than others but my experience over more than ten years knowing him is that if you take the time to develop a relationship with him, he provides the best computer repair service I have ever received in the Bay Area. As a lifetime computer professional in software, I don't want to have to do my own hardware. That's why I call Jonathan whenever I need to buy a new system or fix/upgrade my old one. He has gone way above and beyond normal service level. Just today he called my house without me asking to confirm that all my backup restores worked ok before he reformatted the hard drive he had that he replaced. So often other repair places simply reformat the drive whether you ask them to keep the data or not but Jonathan was careful to put my data first without my even asking. He has worked around my needs and schedule and exceeded my expectations. There were some uncertainties in my custom order but he adapted to the changing situation effectively. I had a totally different feel for this place. I NEEDED to get my computer fixed, fast, and the power stopped working. Jonathan carried it from my car, since I'm pregnant and can't lift heavy objects now. He looked at it, we discussed the situation and he quoted me $40 for the new power supply plus 45 labor, but then totaled it at $75. An HOUR later, he called, when he knew I'd be down the street again, and I picked up my working computer. Fabulous! I then asked him another question about a sound problem I was having, he spent more time with me and the machine, on the spot, and fixed that too. I offered more $ since he's spent more time, and ended up paying him the originally quoted $85. He loaded the computer back in the car, and I couldn't believe everything was perfect in less than 1.5 hours. So the place is cluttered- who cares- I wasn't looking for a fine dining experience or the W hotel, I was looking to get my computer fixed fast! Mission accomplished! read more

They're not only found the tiny wire inside a very, very small cable that I have broken, they showed me a picture of it and gave me a complete tutorial. then they went on to explain why my printer wasn't working anymore. It had smeared printing because over five years, I've been using aftermarket toner on an HP printer. I then asked for a recommendation on a high volume printer for home use. That's in between category between home desktop and large office printers. They said they didn't know but they researched it and called me back a couple of days later with really excellent advice I took and purchased the printer they recommended! Then one day I was nearby installed a large projection system and didn't have a long enough power cable. I went in and explained and they gave me a 10 foot power cable for free. But most important these people are are very friendly as well as mean technical experts... But very humble about it and they really listen care about the customers. Wow!

Using Yelp Projects, I filled out the repair request, and the bids came pouring in! YY Computer offered to do diagnostics and software install for $100. YY Computer is in Oakland Chinatown on Jackson St. I made an appt, and dropped by in the morning. While I was there, they did a quick check and found the hard drive (HD) to be damaged. They repaired my PC and upgraded my HD to 1 TB. It took about 2 business days. When I went to pickup my PC, they switched it on and show me the new HD. I'm very pleased with my experience. Small parking lot or meters on the street.

Initially, I did not jump to conclusions. Instead, I sought additional opinions from other professional recovery companies to better understand available options. That's most important. Before posting this review, I reached out directly to Emergency Guy to give them an opportunity to address my concerns and provide clarification. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response. I came to Emergency Guy seeking guidance after experiencing issues with my HDD and SSD. Overall, the staff and technicians were respectful. However, I did have one interaction with an individual staff member who appeared overwhelmed and frustrated - possibly the owner, Phillip? While that affected the tone of that particular interaction, I understand that these situations can happen. It did not deter me from my overall experience, as I continued working with other staff members who were professional and helped improve the overall tone of the communication. I paidfor an evaluation and assessment, including shipping costs. During a follow-up phone conversation, I was asked over the phone whether I would consider increasing my budget to approximately $2,000 so the HDD could be sent to another company. While I was open to discussing available options, I ultimately decided not to proceed. Approximately four weeks later or longer, I was informed that the HDD platters were damaged and that there was essentially no realistic chance of recovering my data, even through another recovery provider. I was also asked whether I wanted the drive recycled, which I understood as disposing of the device, and I chose not to proceed with that option. I sought additional professional opinions. After receiving a second and third evaluation from other data recovery companies, I was advised that the condition of the HDD did not appear to match the assessment I had originally received. This experience raised concerns about the accuracy of the initial evaluation. Since I paid it, I expected a clear and accurate diagnosis of the drive's condition, along with realistic information regarding possible recovery options. My concern is not that recovery was uncertain -- I understand that data recovery can be complex and that outcomes are never guaranteed. My concern is that I was told it was beyond recovery, yet further evaluations resulted in my data being successfully recovered. My advice to anyone going through a similar situation is to seek multiple professional opinions. I chose Emergency Guy because I believe in supporting local businesses, and I appreciate the services they provide. However, when dealing with important data recovery decisions, it is always wise to consult other qualified professionals. If something does not feel right, take the time to ask questions, gather information, and get additional opinions before making a final decision. If someone becomes dismissive with questions - that's a sign to move on immediately.

I needed a TV mounted to the wall ASAP and Melvin was able to come the next day compared to the…read moreother 4 companies that I reached out to that wouldn't be able to help me in more than a week or so. Prior to our appointment he made sure I had everything I needed and offered other products and services that I may want. Upon arrival he was very nice, easy going and professional. He worked efficiently and double checked with me every so often to ensure the work he was providing was to my liking. I definitely recommend him for his TV mounting skills and will definitely use his service again.
