Originally from Vermont, Berzins began looking for a good location to open a brewery after attending the Siebel Institute for Brewing in 2010. He settled on a former hay field in Easthampton at the base of Mount Tom. He chose Easthampton for the city's delicious, environmentally protected water. He was also enamored with the community's friendliness and sense of welfare. Berzins adheres to the Reinheitsgebot German purity law for the majority of his beers. Per the age-old law, the beer can only be produced with four ingredients: water, hops, malt, and yeast. At first, Fort Hill only brewed lagers. More recently they have ventured into hoppier territory with the addition of IPAs. My son and I recently visited Fort Hill Brewery while we were cycling the large network of bike trails in and around Northampton. The brewery is conveniently located right alongside the spur trail section of the Manhan Rail Trail. The location had seating available outside as well as inside and was quite packed when we arrived. The draught menu that day featured about 20 different beers of varying styles. Being the hop head that I am, I decided to order a sampler flight of five IPAs. It consisted of "G-Fresh" (Grapefruit IPA), "Disco Kid" (IPA), "Fresh Pick" (NEIPA), "Checkmate Chuck" (DIPA) and "Jigsaw Jazz" (DIPA). They were all pretty good, but "G-Fresh" and "Fresh Pick" were my two favorites. My son and I grabbed a table by the brewery's small stage and we listened to the blues sensations of Wildcat O'Halloran's band while I enjoyed my beer samples. We had a nice time at Fort Hill Brewery and I would definitely stop by again!

I had two beers, and both very tasty. The Pianist, is exactly what I'd usually gravitate towards a great sour, with a bit of a twist. I also had Corrupt Cranberry, this is not for everyone, but I enjoyed it. It's a seltzer beer, I've never heard of such a thing. It's very unique, a bit more watery then the average beer, but also very flavorful. The night I was here, there was live music. This is a great little brewery that I enjoyed checking out. I have to add, they charge $2.00 for beer sampling. I'm not sure how big the samples are, this might be a covid reason. This is also a dog friendly brewery.

Neither one of us like IPAs so the wonderful bartender swapped out 2. This brewery is in a phenomenal space. It's off the main road with plenty of parking. They have a couple of TVs to watch the games. The interior is warm and cozy. I can definitely see doing a small gathering here in the meeting space with the dark bookcases (with gray books!). A good size table that seats at least 8 and space around to mingle. I guess I'm turning into a real adult. The beer choices were good. I really liked the Pink Lemonade, it was refreshing. The aroma was grasping and fresh. Overall, a wonderful brewery in the area. The price is to be expected from a local brewery. It was worth it. The ambiance was pleasant. The waitress was prompt. Waitress/server/cashier. The inside was clean and they have good parking. Overall, i would come back. I would even be interested in asking if i can do poetry readings from my own books at one of their open mic nights. And maybe offer book singings there as well. Definitely check them out if you are in western mass and can not find fresh, tasty brews. We bought three year old beer recently from a convenience store in the area. Save yourself any disappointment and get a month old batch or maybe less. Whew!

Not 9 different IPA's with a token lager. Pilsners, lagers, Mai Bock, a rice lager and cask beers. These people really have it right. And the music! OMG!! A turntable, an amplifier and about a thousand record albums. Every genre from Classic rock right up through the 2000's. And, as if that weren't enough, your dog is welcome! Me and Odie will be stopping in today (Saturday) for a couple of pints and, oh yeah, dog treats at the bar!!! One more thing. The staff are extraordinarily adept and skilled with the products they sell. I'd give ten stars if I could.

I made a mental note to come back another day, when I had time to explore the area. Spoiler alert: There's not much there to explore in Gilbertville. Although, if you're like me and willing to drive 10 miles out of your way to save ten cents a gallon on gas, they do have the cheapest gas around. But I digress... Yesterday I pulled into their almost non-existent parking lot and wondered where people park when they are full. I was there at 3pm, so it was empty aside from myself, two other people, and a dog. The space was quirky and eclectic, with random art on the walls, old pieces from antique shops, and a bar lined with metal seats. They also had a few tables. It was all dark old wood, and I imagine it would be an awesome spot to hit on a cold winter's day. I settled myself into a seat at the bar. Just a warning: those seats must have the AC blowing directly onto the metal, because my poor vagina felt like it went through a cold plunge. I was wearing shorts, but the freezing cold metal felt like it penetrated straight into my cervix. If you opt for bar seating while wearing shorts, pack a sweater for your genitals. Icy nether regions aside, this place was a perfect little hideaway to hang for a bit and enjoy some well-crafted beers. They don't serve meals, but they do have snacks you can purchase if you need some sustenance. Their white stout was PHENOMENAL, one of the best beers I've had in a while. It was creamy, sweet, and SO easy to drink. It gave me a cream soda vibe, but with a 7% bite. Solo factor: 7/10. The place was pretty empty when I went, so it felt very comfortable to be there by myself. But it's tiny, so I don't know if it would have that same vibe once it's packed. The bartender was awesome, and very attentive. The seating isn't necessarily ideal for someone who wants to spend hours hanging out there, but it was fine for the time I was there...and there were also other options for places to sit. Also, I saw that they have an outdoor area where you can sit, which I missed on the way in. And I would be remiss to not mention that their bathroom was freakishly clean for a brewery bathroom. I've been to two places over the past few weeks where I walked into the bathroom, saw what was waiting for me, and thought "Fuck it, I'd rather get a kidney stone." Yuck.
