We had our wedding up the street and everyone was in town the night before, so we were looking for a place to bring a large party to have a casual hangout. This place was the perfect spot for that. They had live music on a Saturday, allow you to bring in food from other places and have a great selection of beers that fit everyone's preferences. They have a good selection of different styles of beers (definitely try the Hazed and Confewzed if you like super citrusy IPAs!), and some funkier options like the peanut butter and jelly stout, and kombucha on tap! They have a nice spot that's well put together and clean. Feels homely and cozey. Staff was very warm and friendly, parking seemed plentiful. The beer selection had several varieties as well. As far as the quality of beer, it seemed to vary from style to style with some being good as is, others needing work. I guess I'd categorize this place as a hopeful new option for the area that's still ironing out some of the kinks. At least two of the beers I tried had a good flavor, but an awkward musty nose. The brown ale and sour were my favorites of the offerings I tried, though I'm typically more of an ale or IPA guy. read more

A flight and a float! What a perfect relief for a really hot weekend. If you have a few free minutes in Sturbridge, MA, spend them at this cool brewery. They have a great variety of beer on tap ranging from a light and refreshing saison to a bourbon-barreled stout. Your bartender will make excellent suggestions based on your preferences, and tastings are by the glass not flight. The Willonia (light) and Fiske Ale (brown ale) were my favorite. They were smooth and clean. We also ordered a stout float and enjoyed it immensely!! Such a cool option. They have a few tables, allow you to bring in your own food, and have a good number of seats at the bar. There is seating for groups, but if you go at a busy time you'll probably have a few people standing if there are more than 3 of you. Check it out, enjoy, and leave with a few cans or T-shirts. Can't wait to go back here! This place was awesome. They paid attention to every detail. The atmosphere is so welcoming and spacious - they utilized all the amazing architecture already present from the building and put their own twist on everything. My husband and I both had flights of beer and were not disappointed at all! We got there right after opening so we were the only ones there for a bit which gave us time to get to know the bartender and talk shop ... she was fantastic. They serve warm pretzels but you're also welcome to bring your own food. Looks like they have a great live band line up and they have some fun games like a giant connect four! Beer is served in smaller than pint glasses, snifters are almost sampler size, so the price proposition is just okay. Beer was also just okay. My lager was fine, and someone's gingerbread stout was just a Russian Imperial with some syrupy graham cracker on the rim of what was almost a shot glass. Maybe if they ramp up production a bit they'll really grow into their own. Good experience, not great. I wrote a review of Altruist on March 25, 2018, and it was "not recommended". After watching the video explaining why some reviews are not recommended, I figured that mine was not recommended due to my inactivity as a reviewer; it was probably seen as "a rant". It is true that it was my first review, and I only opened a yelp account to write this review, but it was written with sincerity. My husband is a home brewer, and we love the visiting all of the new breweries popping up-it's like we're going back to Medieval times when there was a brewery in every town. We like some for their atmosphere, some for their staff, and some for their beer. Our favorites in Central Mass are Cold Harbor, Medusa, and Wormtown. I would give each 5 stars, but I haven't yet. I stand by my review. Our experience was that bad. Here it is again: There are so many breweries to choose from these days, so choose somewhere else. Beer is about fun and camaraderie, and there were neither here. We came when it was not busy, and yet the service was slow and impersonal. Instead of offering to describe their beers, we were pointed to the chalkboard. Nevertheless, we sampled almost every beer. There were no glaring flaws, but all were lacking complexity and differentiation even between contrasting styles. We ended up finding better beer and friendlier vibes literally just down the road at both Homefield and Rapscallion. read more
