Spencer Brewery is or perhaps was the only Trappist brewery in the United States. Unfortunately it…read morecame to my attention that their physical location is now closed. However I wouldn't entirely rule them out on not being able to try their beer as I just spotted their beer and purchased it at Total Wine and Beverage so perhaps it's production only now. We had one of their beers and were quite impressed by it. It was a Belgian Enkel/Patersbier, a very unique tasting beer and definitely reminds one of Europe. A beer more on fancier side with a dry, fruity and banana like flavor. It's complex but was very well balanced. The name of the beer just says Trappist Beer on Untapped but you may want to look for American Trappist ale or of course anything that says Spencer Brewery.

The area: Open space with tents setup with tables and chairs for seating, pouring stations scattered on one side of the event. There is also a station for tasting the large variety of jams and jelly (you can buy them at the souvenirs store at the entrance of the monastery), the other side of the event are tents for souvenir purchase and cases of beer for sale. They also have a small pond and large field for the kids to run around. Very family friendly. Price: We love that the admission is free and you got 2 sample tickets with it. Everything is very affordable: $1 sample beer, $5 pint beer, $5 for 3 hotdogs, $5 souvenir glasses, etc. You got my point. They also had a food truck for fire dept fundraiser - the line was too long, but I think for $10, you get half roasted chicken, biscuit, side salad, and some type of dessert. Very good deal. The flow: You must purchase tickets for everything (except the fire dept food truck), they only accept cash for the tickets. you use the tickets as cash to buy drinks, souvenirs, and cases of beer... So if you plan to make big purchase here, bring cash with you. They do have an ATM on site. The brewery area is open for self walk tour, you can find monks manning the various booths, walking around and greeting visitors. They are super nice and we really enjoyed talking with them and learning about the monastery. Miscellaneous: The church and grounds are open to the public, after the brewery tour, we drove down to the church and walked around for a bit. We love the peacefulness and scenic view here. 100% fan of the event, we hope they continue to offer open house and affordable price!!!

Full honesty: *noticed people were leaving 1/2 or more of…read morefood on their plates. Thought it was just big portions. No. It's just meh tasting. I had three teenagers with me. We got flatbreads, nachos, Mac and cheese, wings and an order of hush puppies. They left more than half of everything and said it was just ok. I spent $120 between food and drinks.. but the real kicker is *it's not a real restaurant* you go up and order like a Burger King and then you go up and pick up like Burger King but they still want a 20% tip. so I don't know what they want their 20% tip for when no one comes to you, no one checks on you. No one to ask you how it is. they don't care. also, they only sell single serve bottles of soda so there's no refills. We ended up spending like $22 on soda alone. * I noticed on their Facebook that they were complaining that people who were doing cornhole tournaments were bringing outside food and instead of reassessing their situation and what they're serving, they threatened to cancel the cornhole. If you served better food, people would buy it. It's not rocket science. Yours is 5/10 and there's other options out there that are cheaper and better than what you're currently offering. You don't take away the cornhole from people who are giving you any bit of business, you make it better for them.. so they want to buy it and they want to spend money and they want to eat your food. *since my teens aren't old enough to drink, there really isn't much to offer there in the way of food so we won't be coming back because there's no reason to.

Left 1/2 the bbq and almost all the hush puppies. Such a waste but it wasn't good.

I first visited these guys when they were operating out of a small barn, and seeing the evolution to this 53,000 sq ft, $18.5M facility is seriously impressive. They follow a "direct-to-consumer" model -- selling everything right out the front door -- and they've mastered it. I've been here many times over the years and go whenever I have the opportunity, which says everything. Tried some of their standout beers -- King Julius is the gold standard, consistently ranked among the best beers in the world. Their flagship Julius is just as impressive, with massive notes of mango and peach -- incredibly well balanced and executed. There are usually food trucks on site, which adds to the experience -- you can enjoy a fresh pour while picking up your take-home haul. Fun fact: On BeerAdvocate's all-time Top 250 list, Tree House often has 30+ beers featured, something almost no other brewery can match. Overall, some of the best beers anywhere -- truly unparalleled and absolutely worth the visit. Saluti.
