Macari first worked for toy manufacturer Hasbro before launching a custom cabinetry business with another former Hasbro colleague. Today he is involved in multiple businesses. For a new venture, Macari decided to open his own brewery with Neveu, another former Hasbro employee. The partners acquired and completely renovated the circa 1872 Berkeley Mill boiler room building to house the brewery. They named it "Phantom Farms" after the Macari family's local apple orchard and bakery just down the road. Oscar Garrido and Andrea Riera, a husband-and-wife team from Chile, were hired as the head brewers. Since opening, Phantom Farms has become known for its farm-to-pint operation, its close connection to its namesake orchard, a historic taproom, and award-winning lagers. I recently visited Phantom Farms Brewing while I was in town for the day. I was scheduled to meet up with some other beer bloggers. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the restored historic building was. There was plenty of space upstairs and downstairs, indoors and outdoors, and the brewery is also family-friendly. After exploring all of the various rooms, I looked over the draught menu. There was an eclectic mix of beer styles as well as hard cider crafted with apples from the Phantom Farms Orchard. Between mingling with the other bloggers and playing some games of Biñho, I enjoyed pours of "Half Dark" (Czech Amber Lager), "Elegant Viking" (New England IPA), "Alternate Continuum" (Barrel-Aged Saison), and "Hypernova" (Barleywine). I was very impressed with everything that I tried, especially the last two. Between an excellent roster of beers, a beautiful historic space, and some excellent company, I had a really enjoyable experience at Phantom Farms and I highly recommend them to any craft beer aficionados who are visiting the area!

There was a food truck set up which was great and plenty of options inside. The service was quick and we enjoyed the space overall! I was thrown off that this is not, in fact, located at the actual Phantom Farms, but that's totally on me! It was still a nice spot to stop into.

I got the special:bratwurst and fries. It was delish. Also got pretzel bites also good but overly salty. Dessert was disappointing. Apple turnover had potential but we couldn't find any apple in them. Too much butter so the center was a soggy mess but the edges were crisp. Add in some apples, reduce the butter and you'd have a hit. Or experiment with your beers like a pumpkin swirl cheese cake or tart, apple cider donut/cinnamon bun or such. I will return here for their great beer selection. This is the first beer flight I've had where I really liked them all equally.

Very clean. Bartender was super friendly and attentive. Patrons were very pleasant as well. They don't serve food here, but you can bring your own. I did notice they had chips for sale, but that was about it. Dogs are allowed. Looks like they do a lot of fun events & weekly activities. It was cribbage night when we went, though there were only a couple of people playing. They have all their events listed on their website. Had about 6 choices on tap. No to-go cans available though as their canner was not working. Love that you can get a flight with either a 5 or an 8 ounce pour. Between hubby and I, we tried all of the beer. Hubby didn't really find anything that he liked. But, keep in mind that he's not a huge beer drinker. I, on the other hand, am... Lol! I enjoyed most of the flavors. The ones I didn't seemed to me to have too light a flavor. My favorite of the night was the maple habanero pumpkin spice beer...it was absolutely amazing. So good, in fact, that I hope to make it back there before it's gone for the season. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out. CraftRoots is a 501(c)3 non-profit and each month they select a new local charity to support. How amazing is that?! AND the best part?! It really is GREAT craft beer and even greater people. The staff are funny, engaging, and super kind, and the owners are some of the most down to earth, kind hearted folks I've met. They allow dogs to jump up and put their feet on the bar and lick it, and I even once saw a dog pee on the floor, but they roll their eyes when kids walk in? We are frequent brewery patrons with large groups, and we have never been made to feel unwelcome like we do at clover road, so we'll continue to take our business elsewhere.
