Macari first worked for toy manufacturer Hasbro before launching a custom cabinetry business with another former Hasbro colleague. Today he is involved in multiple businesses. For a new venture, Macari decided to open his own brewery with Neveu, another former Hasbro employee. The partners acquired and completely renovated the circa 1872 Berkeley Mill boiler room building to house the brewery. They named it "Phantom Farms" after the Macari family's local apple orchard and bakery just down the road. Oscar Garrido and Andrea Riera, a husband-and-wife team from Chile, were hired as the head brewers. Since opening, Phantom Farms has become known for its farm-to-pint operation, its close connection to its namesake orchard, a historic taproom, and award-winning lagers. I recently visited Phantom Farms Brewing while I was in town for the day. I was scheduled to meet up with some other beer bloggers. The first thing I noticed was how beautiful the restored historic building was. There was plenty of space upstairs and downstairs, indoors and outdoors, and the brewery is also family-friendly. After exploring all of the various rooms, I looked over the draught menu. There was an eclectic mix of beer styles as well as hard cider crafted with apples from the Phantom Farms Orchard. Between mingling with the other bloggers and playing some games of Biñho, I enjoyed pours of "Half Dark" (Czech Amber Lager), "Elegant Viking" (New England IPA), "Alternate Continuum" (Barrel-Aged Saison), and "Hypernova" (Barleywine). I was very impressed with everything that I tried, especially the last two. Between an excellent roster of beers, a beautiful historic space, and some excellent company, I had a really enjoyable experience at Phantom Farms and I highly recommend them to any craft beer aficionados who are visiting the area!

I'm a bit of a lavender addict so whenever I see it, I NEED to get it. The bartender warned it could be a little light, but I went ahead with ordering it anyway. It was delicious! The color was light but the flavor was not. I was surprised to learn they have a full food menu here. I had already eaten but got to pick some yummy crispy fries from my friend's plate, and they were delicious. Lots of seasonal St. Patrick's Day options were available, which added a nice festive flair. Bathrooms were clean and easy to find, and I loved the "furry friends of Bravo" bulletin board with pet pictures to gaze at. CraftRoots is a 501(c)3 non-profit and each month they select a new local charity to support. How amazing is that?! AND the best part?! It really is GREAT craft beer and even greater people. The staff are funny, engaging, and super kind, and the owners are some of the most down to earth, kind hearted folks I've met. Unfortunately, we have basically stopped going. With young kids, who are well behaved but active, most of the staff at CR complains about the kids and reprimands them if they're not sitting still the entire time. They advertise as "family friendly" but they're quite the opposite. It's frustrating to go to CR with a group only to feel unwelcome because our kids are having fun. They allow dogs to jump up and put their feet on the bar and lick it, and I even once saw a dog pee on the floor, but they roll their eyes when kids walk in? We are frequent brewery patrons with large groups, and we have never been made to feel unwelcome like we do at clover road, so we'll continue to take our business elsewhere.
