OMG, Arcata Scoop is AMAZING!!! I was visiting Arcata for 4 days in October. My brother, a HSU student, took me to try Arcata Scoop. I have to say, this was one of the HIGHLIGHTS of my trip. Okay, so first of all, Arcata Scoop is this cute little ice cream shop situated in a "homey" setting. Its super cute and cozy and makes you feel right at ease. You can tell they put a lot of TLC creating this place towards what it has become. The decor here is so cute and perfect for kids. You can even eat your ice cream while rocking on a swing! How awesome is THAT?! Now to the flavors.... first thing you need to know: the scoops are HUGE!! 1 scoop is more like 2, and 2 scoops are more like 4. Soo, my brother and I shared a 2 scoop cone. I wanted to try a few flavors so what they did was split the 2 scoops into 4 'small' scoops. Out of the 4 flavors I tried, the VANILLA HONEY LAVENDER was the BEST!!!!! You have to order this. Not only is it what the are famous for, it is fricken DELICIOUS. You will understand once you try it. And those who are regulars at Arcata Scoop KNOW what I'm talking about. Arcata Scoop has hands down the best ice cream shop I have ever been to (aside from the the time I got gelato from this one place in Italy). They make their ice cream in the back of the shop, and they have a book available of all the ingredients in each flavor, which often amounts to only five or less ingredients. They use Strauss dairy products, so you know it's quality. They are constantly interchanging their twelve flavors save for the house flavors of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Honey Lavender Vanilla. They strive to use local ingredients from nearby farms, and they will tell you which farm your, say, strawberries in the Strawberry ice cream come from. They always have two non-dairy options- a sorbet and a coconut milk base flavor of some sort. They also make their own waffle cones and bowls in house, right in front of you. The interior is very cute and welcoming. They have a great interactive swinging bench inside as well as a little section for kids to play. They also have complimentary water to quench your thirst. My only complaint is the price, but for a quality, locally made product, I am willing to pay a little more. I love this place. read more

Honey vanilla lavender is all you need to remember. Atmosphere was awesome, with the old school seating appealing to yesterday and today's youth. It was a welcoming, comfortable and safe atmosphere that really allowed me to enjoy my dessert. Husband was craving something sweet after bowling at Harbor Lanes in Eureka, so I suggested we try scoops. He was weary because we'd have to drive to arcata (we're lazy), but I think he was happy with the ice cream. Not sure if we would drive all the way out there again, though... This is, hands down, my favorite ice cream shop. Ice cream is probably one of my top five favorite desserts, aaaand as a result I've eaten a lot of it from all over the West Coast. Arcata Scoop still holds the title for best ice cream in my book. I like firm, full-fat ice cream with rich, fun flavors, and the Scoop fits the bill! They offer waffle bowls in addition to waffle cones, both of which they make in-house, and the shop smells so sweet from them! They've adapted to COVID well, so you can still enjoy their wonderful ice cream even though the inside has been shut off for now. When it's fully open again, I hope we can all enjoy the adorable giraffe swinging benches and the cute rabbit carousel ride. I LOVE this place. It's so so charming! The ice cream definitely tastes homemade and it's delicious. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, although we chose to sit on the swing because it looked like the most fun. I wish there was a broader variety of options on flavors and I would have liked to have seen consistency in scoop size. I notice a difference if you order a single scoop cone versus a single scoop bowl. (Psst, you get more in the bowl! ). I decided on the Grasshopper flavor which is mint with cookie and spirulina. It was quite good and I recommend it. Unfortunately the waffle cone was lacking in flavor, I recommend adding more vanilla or maybe even experimenting in other spices since they make them right at the front (which I find great). Arcata scoop is a classic favorite. I love going there and enjoying ice cream on the swinging chair. I have not visited since COVID but I went to go for years when I was in college. The waffle cones are fresh and the smells of them cooking is so warm and inviting. I have tried so many of their flavors but the lavender is by far one of my favorites. This was amazing. Freah made waffle cones and ice cream that can be sweet or savory. The honey, vanilla, and lavender was the best lavender ice cream I have ever had. Not overly floral and the perfect not overly sweet treat. The olive oil was such a fun savory sweet blend of creammy goodness. If you want a full sweet ice cream they have that too. Maple walnut was also bomb! The atmosphere was bright and cheery with beautiful vintage carousel swings and signs. So in love with this place. I wish I could take it home with me. read more

Full disclosure: my boyfriend's negative review is also on this page, but it does not accurately reflect my disappointment and displeasure, so I have chosen to write one as well. Late July of this year, we planned a trip to Arcata because my guy had once lived there and is very fond of the area and all it has to offer. For months I'd been hearing him tell me all about the wonderful places we were going to visit and the different restaurants and specialty shops he was looking forward to taking me to. Arcata Scoop was one such place that he was just chomping at the bit to experience with me, and it it just went completely wrong. I've never left an ice cream shop, of all places, in such disappointment. First, and understandably since the shop seems quite popular, it was very busy and crowded. I am actually a very shy and anxious person on the best of days, and there in a new town surrounded by new people, I was not going to simply barge my way to the front to look at what was in the cases. Therefore, when I saw that the menu board was being taken down and changed regularly when flavors ran out, I believed it was safe to assume the blackberry sorbet listed as their non-dairy option was still in stock. We waited for what seemed like forever, and then when we got to the front of the line, I stood there and scanned the case, over and over, looking for the precious blackberry flavored goodness I'd stood there waiting for. ... and it wasn't there. I double checked. I triple checked. I probably took so long staring in disbelief that the people behind me were starting to wonder if there was something seriously wrong with me. I checked the menu. Yes. It was still on the menu. So why wasn't it in the case? I am lactose intolerant. I'm no quinoa-theiving (those indigenous people where it grows need it more than you!) almod milk drinking vegan food hipster who can simply afford to give up meat and dairy and live on roots and berries because it's the trendy, healthy thing to do. Dairy literally makes me ill in ways you wouldn't want me to describe, much less experience for yourself. So, YES, it was a big deal for me when the blackberry sorbet I wanted was replaced with some melon flavored mess I couldn't have cared less about. I hate melon. I wanted blackberry, and blackberry was *still on* the menu. When I asked about it, I got the barest suggestion of an apology. The sort you get from a person who honestly feels bad that you're disappointed, but is not going to lift a finger or make any real effort to make it right, or explain the kind of laziness and arrogance it takes to assume changing the dairy-free option to be accurate might be important or impact a person's decision to stay and wait for so long. Let me tell you how this made me feel: unconsidered. Second class. Like lactose intolerance is but the merest sliver on the pie chart for reasons to provide a dairy-free option, when in reality, the people who could get sick or have a serious reaction to your other flavors should come FIRST with that sort of consideration. If they hadn't been actively taking down the menu and replacing the other flavors immediately as they ran out, I wouldn't feel so outraged that I waited over half an hour to walk out disappointed and empty-handed, with an angry boyfriend who had already bought his, but now could not enjoy it without looking at me, sad, without a treat, and feeling like chopped liver. But I watched them. They took that board down at least four times times and changed multiple unavailable flavors on it. I just don't understand why the dairy-free option is so unimportant that it doesn't warrant a menu change at all. I look forward to visiting Arcata again, but Scoop has earned the distinction of being the only shop I visited that I will not be visiting again. I like to feel valued as a customer, even and especially when I have special needs that the establishment claims to accommodate, like dairy free options. Maybe because of their popularity they don't have to worry about things like that, but I didn't feel valued at all. Maybe there's a different place with dairy-free options worth giving a try next time we stay for a romantic getaway. read more

Everyone needs to leave I street and head to G street where REDWOOD YOGURT resides. The scoop is so overpriced and overrated and the staff always look annoyed and come off as pretentious. You work at an ice cream parlor...calm down.I'm pretty sure the samples come out of their paycheck as they give you the worlds smallest dab on each spoon.
