However, my experience with the service left room for improvement. One thing I've noticed at certain establishments is that some waitresses seem to prioritize guests they believe will leave larger tips, while giving less attention to customers they assume won't spend as much. Unfortunately, that is the impression I got during my visit. As someone who frequently dines alone and reviews restaurants throughout the city, I believe every customer deserves the same level of hospitality, regardless of how they look, whether they're dining alone, or how much the staff assumes they'll tip. You never know who is sitting in front of you or how generously that person may have been planning to tip. Another issue I experienced was the way questions about gratuity were handled. If a customer asks about the gratuity included in their bill, that should be an opportunity to educate them and explain the restaurant's policy professionally, not respond as though the customer should already know the answer. Sometimes a guest is asking because they want to understand whether the gratuity goes directly to their server, is shared among the staff, or is distributed another way. They may even be considering leaving an additional personal tip. I understand that many Chicago establishments include a 20% gratuity, and I have no problem respecting a restaurant's clearly communicated policies. However, not every establishment in Chicago operates the same way, and customers should not be made to feel uncomfortable for asking questions about their bill. A question about gratuity is not necessarily a complaint about gratuity. Sometimes it's simply a customer trying to understand how to take care of the person who served them. I genuinely wanted to give Kitchen + Kocktails five stars because I appreciate the atmosphere and what the establishment has to offer. However, great food and a great environment should be accompanied by equally great service. My biggest takeaway is simple: Treat every guest with the same respect and attentiveness. Don't assume someone's tipping potential based on appearances, party size, or whether they're dining alone. And when a customer asks a question, take the time to explain rather than making them feel dismissed. The food is there. The atmosphere is there. The potential for an exceptional dining experience is absolutely there. Now, the service needs to consistently match everything else. Hospitality is about making every guest feel valued, not just the ones you assume will leave the biggest tip.
