Since we don't live in an Italian Beef market (except for one who would not make the list) we are happy Portillos (a large chain) makes it so easy to take Italian Beef home. We usually buy 2 once pound frozen packs of Italian Beef. With it comes the gravy. Bread is one of the more critical aspects of a perfect Italian Beef. I once thought I could get it at home and was found I was wrong. A local Chicago bakery makes Portillo's rolls and I found I can get them at a Chicago grocery store for about one half what it would cost at the restaurant. Our freezer is stocked with Italian beef rolls to last perhaps another 5 pounds of meat or so. A one pound package is usually good for 2 dinners or several lunches. The trick is to have it a couple of times and go without for a while so that you crave it again. That way you will never get sick of it. Mishawaka is the closest Portillos' to Grand Rapids. When we're anywhere near here, we will always grab a couple of pounds to take home. Portillo's is definitely a favorite.

I have not yet had the pleasure of trying anything off of Fatbird's normal menu. I'll try to keep this review quick since it is pretty specific but long story short, we loved the unique and well made food and the service and vibes were great! So while Fatbird is known for their chicken sandwiches, my bf and I ordered the $40 lunch for two from this special 2026 menu, which was heavily indigenous Latin American-inspired in the ingredients. For the starter, we shared 8 sweet plantains slices which were yummy but we wish we had more. Then for our main, we split one grilled jerk chicken sandwich with VERY unique ingredients like a pickled green tomato as well as two creative tacos with tender shredded pork and more pickled veg. The tacos were spicy as heck and definitely not for the faint of heart! Lastly, we split a small bowl of arrow con leche brule, which helped bring the heat down from the tacos. While we didn't leave full, we had fun trying a curated and very unique set of dishes with interesting flavors, textures, and spices. The other 4 people we ate lunch with ordered a variety of stuff from the normal menu, some of which are in my attached pictures. My bf also ordered himself a pineapple tepache to sip on, which was $8, and I got myself a diet coke with lemon ($3). Our waitress was on top of her game and was very friendly. The interior is cute and spacious and the bathroom is cute and clean. I love a clean bathroom! Their normal menu has 8000 things I want to try next time! As for this special menu lunch, we paid, after tax, tip, and a credit card surcharge, a total of $67. A bit high for lunch, but good vibes all around!

I waltzed in on a weekday afternoon and it was pretty dead, but I was greeted and my food came out quickly. The maque choux was to die for. The banh mi chicken was less exciting, but still good enough to entice me to try it again. Wish I was able to order a cocktail on that trip, as the menu looked intriguing.

My boyfriend and I were feeling silly in June 2026 and wanted ice cream for brunch so decided to go here after a quick search on Yelp. Inside felt like a mix of Grease, Pleasantville, and the Fallout TV show with tin lunchboxes, pictures of classic cars, and cheeky signs decorating every square inch of the inside. While waiting for our food, we hummed along to the music of the 1950s and 1960s playing on the speakers from the same Sirius XM station my parents listen to. Some artists we heard during our lunch there included The Ronettes, Elvis, The Bobettes, The Crests, and The Temptations! Since we both ordered "baskets," we got our sandwiches with fries and a soda. My boyfriend got the green river phosphate soda and I got a diet root beer. His phosphate was so bright neon green that it definitely stood out! We only waited about 5 minutes for our food but that was still enough time to look around the place and listen to some of the orders being placed by cars over the speakers as well as flip through an early 2000s book on some of the must visit hamburger restaurants in the USA. See attached picture for a screenshot of that list. Now, my grilled pb and banana sandwich was a decent size. Not too big and actually reflecting the portion sized people in the 1950s used to eat! The prices reflected the "small-ish" portions as well as we only paid $7.99 for my basket and his was $10.99. The white toast was heavily buttered and the pb was creamy. I would have preferred crunchy pb for texture reasons. The crinkle fries needed salt but they hit the spot! The food itself wasn't anything special but the vibes were perfect! After eating our real food, we then got our heavily anticipated bowls of sugar upon sugar. My bf's medium tin roof sundae was quite large and indulgent ($4.99). But I definitely went hard in indulging. I treated myself to the classic cars sundae ($5.99) with a scoop of birthday cake and caramel moose tracks with strawberry syrup topping. I laugh cried when it came out, I was so happy! It was sooooo much sugar. The total with cash was about $32 and with credit card, it was $33.34 as there is a 4% fee for using a card. I left 40 bucks in cash for the meal and the tip. Then we left and I immediately died of a sugar rush. The end!
