My "butterfly in water reeds without the backing of chair. There is nothing in this picture but glass of various shapes and colors.

I have recently spent a fair amount of time at Aran's Art Studio in the Castro Valley Village. I had last been in that shop about 25 years ago, with my restless kids, so they could paint some plates to be "theirs" for dinner. I wandered in a couple of weeks ago hoping to shake off an excess of my own restlessness. I found glass fusion art. And hours of quiet contemplation of various shades of blue, the possibilities of transparent and solid colors, the trickiness and unpredictability of the shape and sizes of glass that you snip with shears. And, surprisingly for a lifelong introvert, some undemanding but interesting conversations with strangers as we sorted through broken glass. There are other art options at Aran's -- the ceramic painting I mentioned (both dishware and decorative pieces), enamel pours, painting on canvas, and probably a couple of other options I can't remember at the moment. But for now, I want the risk and light-fed beauty of glass. Glass is so sturdy, so fragile, it demands you look, it disappears, it colors what you see and feel. It's a wannabe writer's metaphor for life.

The staff is so kind and helpful! Fun, peaceful environment. We fused glass for the first time and it was so fun

This place is amazing!!! If I lived closer I would be here more often! Kristi welcome us and walked us through what to do. It's a very casual environment! We went during the weekday for our anniversary. I can't wait to be back and bring my kids! There are so many fun options! So much space to be creative! Can't wait to pickup our fired product!

    Birthday party for 12 girls

I worked with Kristi for a month to plan a nice and fun afternoon for my daughter's 9th birthday and it came out perfect. They were very accommodating and gave us 2 hours. The girls painted the first hour and then cleaned up and we sang happy birthday and passed around cupcakes, juice boxes, and fruit cups. Then we took pictures and cleaned up. They don't usually allow more than 2-3 adults inside but let us have a couple extra parents stay and help. We will definitely return and hope to have more parties in the near future with them!

My daughter did this ice cream bowl. She just loves the speckled paint they have.

My family and I love this place. They have classes for kids and adults. And it's not very expensive. We come here at least once a month.

She chose the clay art activity with a "Sea Friends" theme because it sounded creative and exciting for the kids, but the actual experience did not meet expectations at all. There were only three very simple animal designs offered, which was far too limited for a two-hour birthday party and not engaging enough to keep the children interested. The employees assisting with the activity did not appear to be properly trained to host or manage a children's party. Their instructions were unclear, they spoke very softly, and there was little enthusiasm or interaction with the kids. The atmosphere felt dull and unorganized instead of fun and energetic like a birthday celebration should be. Many of the children lost interest quickly because there was no excitement, guidance, or effort to keep them engaged. What was most disappointing was that, despite booking a two-hour party, the actual clay activity lasted only around 40 minutes. After that, there was very little for the kids to do, leaving them bored and restless for most of the remaining time. As a parent spending money to create a memorable milestone birthday for my daughter, I expected a much better-planned and professionally hosted experience. I chose this place hoping it would create happy memories for my daughter and her friends, but instead it turned into a frustrating and disappointing experience for both the kids and the parents attending the party.

I came with a friend, and during our visit two small letter pieces from her project went missing. When staff informed her there would be a charge, she immediately agreed to pay for them without any argument. We had spent over $300 that day and were simply trying to resolve the situation. I thought one of the missing letters might have accidentally been thrown away in a napkin, so I asked an employee if she had a glove that I could use to check the trash can myself. Before she could help, the owner's son interrupted, told her to stop helping me and go assist a birthday party. When I explained that I was only asking for a glove so I could look through the trash myself, he continued arguing with me instead of helping resolve the situation. I brought my concerns to the manager, but she told me there was nothing she could do because he was the owner's son. What upset me most was that she then called my friend a liar and accused her of trying to steal the missing letters, even though my friend had already agreed to pay for them. I found that accusation completely unfair and unprofessional. The conversation became heated, and I admit I became frustrated. However, I was shocked when we were told not to come back which is fine to me because I was not planning to ever come back to this place due the customer service. Being treated dismissively, having my friend accused of dishonesty, and being told never to return after spending hundreds of dollars left a very negative impression. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not recommend this location.

We came here last month to paint 2 bowls which cost us only ~$76 total for the studio time and bowls themselves. And, before anyone says anything and blames us, YES we did a double coat of paint! Then, we came a week later to pick them up and in the moment, they looked good! Then once we got home, we realized that there was a little paint chip on one of the bowls, making it no longer food safe. Granted, we probably should have noticed this ourselves when we picked up the bowls but we believe it is also the employees' responsibility to perform a quality check before giving a product to a paying customer?! Instead, they didn't say a word when we picked it up the first time so we had to notice the defect ourselves and drive all the way back from the east bay to get it fixed. After coming back to get it fixed, we came back yet another time to pick up the fixed bowl, believing that the bowl's paint chip would be fixed this time. However, to our surprise, the bowl was not fixed. Rather, the paint chips were even worse this time...going from a single small paint chip to SEVERAL large paint chips along the outer edge of the bowl. Again, the employee didn't say anything to us when they gave us the bowl until we pointed out how the paint chips were even WORSE this time. In response, they blamed the worsened condition of the bowl on their "finicky burner" and offered us either a $36 refund or store credit. They didn't even apologize for their mistake or wasting our time yet again. Of course, we took the refund because why would we take another chance here... Personally, I am grateful that they gave us a refund but I feel this experience was a huge waste of time and money. We had to make 4 separate trips from the east bay to SF and what did we get out of it? A bowl with a shitty paint job that somehow got worse with each "fix". A $36 refund doesn't even cover the cost of tolls to cross the bay bridge and come back this many times, not mention the cost of the time and GAS we spent coming back so many times. Overall, I hope Terra Mia Ceramic Studios takes this as a learning lesson to perform more rigorous quality inspections before giving the finished product to paying customers as prevent their customers from wasting time and money coming back to get it fixed. After all, after we finish painting, everything else is in the hands of the employees (glazing, firing, quality check, etc), all we do is come back to pick up the finished product. I feel as though this all could have been avoided, especially since it's just a simple bowl...there are so many more intricate complicated objects that people paint at the studio... Painting the bowls was a great fun experience but we are not happy about coming back 3 additional times to get it fixed only for it to get worse each successive time.
