I can't imagine how any Mexican restaurant worth their salt would serve stale and rancid chips, but Arandas does. GROSS! Even if you're an idiot without a sense of taste or smell, that means the oil IS SICK. It might as well be motor oil you ate. The rest of the food was passable. No one was cheering about their plates. I ordered a ribeye and was served a cheaper cut, a shoulder steak. They are not the same at all. Service was passable, but she pretended like she didn't understand the problem. My suggestion would be to try the other Mexican restaurant in town. Skip this place for the sake of your health and wallet. Who knows what other sick cheap shorts cuts they're making. read more

This is a solid choice for Mexican food. The portions are huge and the prices are reasonable. Service was perhaps a tad on the slow side (especially considering how empty the place was at the time) but not a big deal. I appreciated that they had a Vegetarian Combo menu. Upon visiting Salem OH I had the day to wait until work began. I decided to visit the two Mexican restaurants in town. 1) Bigos for lunch and Arandas for dinner. I wanted to compare the two and see which one was best. The food a Bigos was good and freshly prepared. So now it was time to try the competition. Arandas is probably better located in town even though both restaurants are on the same road and about 1/2 mile from each other. Located where the Walnut hotel use to be located there is ample parking for people. I was treated promptly and directed to a booth. The menu was placed where the drink were advertised (that's at least a small effort to selling a specialty drink). The server asked what I would like to drink. I ordered a margarita and the server pointed out that the 20oz margaritas were on special. I took it. The drink wasn't anything special though. Bottled margarita mix with a little bit of rotgut tequila mixed in. No lime (it should have been served with a lime to brighten the dull bottles juice flavor) the salt on the rim was table salt. Should be kosher.. (sorry I'm just being picky" the chips were fresh and the salsa was good with fresh cilantro in it. I asked about the Chili Colorado to compare the two restaurants to see if one of them made the dish correctly. They don't. Kudos on the server though for knowing the menu!! I settled on the carnitas. They were ok but again nothing special. Just a roasted pork shoulder with little seasoning. Tender? Yes.. so they get an OK approval from me. They are served with refried beans and Spanish rice. The beans were canned and the rice was basic. ( I think I liked Bigos Spanish rice better). When I was served the entree I was offered a second margarita and I took them up on it. Even though they weren't great, they were at least margaritas.. lol unfortunately that is where the up-selling ended. After I ate the check was dropped as no dessert was offered (lost out on higher gratuity) oh well.. the check was not totaled correctly either. My second margarita was not on the bill (lost revenue for owner). I had to have the server add the additional margarita to correct the bill. (I'm an honest patron) Overall the food was good but nothing special. In the comparison between the two restaurants, I would say they are about equal in comparison. So either way you go you will get an average Mexican meal with average food and service. I will come back and visit again when I'm back in town. read more

The worst service ever. Walked in at 6:50pm, was promptly seated and put our drink order in. Great chips and salsa and quick refill once they were gone. Then all downhill from there. After about 30 minutes I noticed that people who came in after us had got their food, ate, and were paying before we had received our order. Our server also noticed and went to check. He then came back and said it would be ready soon. So now a full hour goes by and the server comes over and explained that our order was never started. Nope, goodbye. This is fairly standard, mid-western style mexican but better than average for the genre. It's far better than the ubiquitous El Maquey chain in St. Louis. Great refried beans-as good as I've had anywhere. We will usually order a plate to dip our chips in. Don't bother with the margaritas. The mix appears as if it's made with natural fruit juice, not that nasty stuff that looks like fluorescent green antifreeze, but there's hardly any tequila in it. Stick to beer. Not just BEST Mexican restaurant but BEST restaurant overall in Salem MO. Just moved here 8 months ago, one mother, two children and never a complaint from either of my boys and always leave satisfied. We've tried every restaurant in Salem, no one can compete. The fajitas and fried cheesecake is unreal and for me, in a restaurant, I always look for, not just incredible food but consistency. I used to go to El Maguey in Rolla all the time as it was the best Mexican food I ever had. Then Cozumel came to town and they were okay, but then Arandas... I don't know if they got new management or what happened but it's just better since it became Arandas. And I'm told their flan is made fresh every single morning, and I believe it because it's amazing. The food is so good it's comparable to El Maguey, but their flan is way better. Best flan I have ever had anywhere. I try to go once a month just to get flan. The only complain I have is that sometimes, and not all the time, they will put whipped cream and a cherry on top of the flan. That seems really... weird and gross and I don't get it. Some people have complained that it's attached to a motel and that's why the standards are low. The restaurant and motel have nothing to do with each other. The people who run the restaurant rent the building from the people who own the motel. The people who manage the motel have no part of the restaurant other than that they take rent for the place. read more
