Huge variety in food. Some additional items are available for catering. We dined in on a cool fall day and it was cozy. We had the hawawshi*, rice-stuffed chicken*, lamb kebab, koshary, shish tawouk, pickled eggplant* and falafel. We also got the hibiscus drink which was strong. (* means my faves) The Egyptian owner also made a homemade pepper sauce which is very hot but very flavorful. The staff was very nice and attentive. Parking available Accepts credit card. It was alll good. Unique flavours. Highly highly reccomended.

Aragoz operates as a kitchen and take-out place in Scarborough. There are 2 types of menu offerings: (1) Main menu which is geared mainly towards catering and large orders (you can order online on their website); and (2) Sandwich shop offering Egyptian-style sandwiches and subs (you can order by walking in, or through Uber Eats). They go by the name of "Sandwich Man". We ordered from the main menu on their website, and their ordering platform is very smooth and probably one of the best I've seen (easy to navigate and submit order). There is an online chat feature where you can chat with the chef, and he responds pretty quickly. We asked some questions about some of the menu items, and we got very helpful and informative answers from the kitchen staff / chef in a timely manner. They're also very responsive through the phone, text message, and social media, which makes communication easy (e.g. for arranging pick-up time, customizing certain food items, etc.). The main menu is quite large and extensive - probably the most comprehensive out there in terms of Egyptian food offerings in the GTA. They have all the Egyptian classics ranging from koshary and fattoush, to grilled seafood and Middle Eastern desserts such as knafeh and baklava. Portion sizes are large because they're geared towards catering / party orders. Items that we tried: 1) Grilled Vegetables - Very well done. Loved the charred grill marks on the veggies. Good variety of vegetables too (bell peppers, zucchini, asparagus, eggplant, onion, tomatoes). 2) Koshary - This came in a giant tray of rice (they use sushi rice which is nice and soft), Middle Eastern short vermicelli, chickpeas, lentils, ditalini pasta, and fried crispy onions & shallots (which added a really nice crunch and taste). It came with tomato sauce and vinegar (which we found to be too salty and tasted like pickles). Great dish - loved the mixture and combination of all the rice, pasta, chickpeas, lentils, and crispy onions & shallots. It tasted very wholesome, just like the koshary on the streets of Cairo. 3) Boori (Black Mullet), cooked Singari style - This was quite spicy. Fish size was pretty big. 4) Bolty (Tilapia), cooked Radda (Wheat Bran Charred) style - They stuffed the fish with a garlic & herbs paste, which made it flavourful. The fish had a good amount of meat, but also lots of bones. 5) Grilled Calamari: Sautéed with olives, tomatoes, bell peppers, cilantro, hot chillies (you can ask for it to be made non-spicy, and they'll take out the hot banana peppers), and balsamic splash. This was a great dish. The calamari was nice, tender, and not overly cooked. I liked the veggies included in this dish. The chef is very passionate about his cooking. He was very helpful & friendly when we came in to pick up our order. He explained every dish, what they contained, how they're best served, etc. He was also able to make customizations to some of the items we ordered (e.g. to make them non-spicy, to take the banana peppers / chilies out). Great and friendly customer service overall. One thing to note: For the main menu items, they only deliver if you live close by or place a very large order - otherwise you have to pick up. When picking up, it might be good to bring a cardboard box or large bag to put the food trays / containers in. Some saucy dishes can leak out of their containers, like we experienced.

Steak sandwich combo with salad and fries for $14

Stopped in the plaza for takeout from another restaurant and was intrigued by the sign outside Aragoz. Walked in and met Aragoz's passionate owner who introduced us to his food philosophy: hand-made bread, whole wheat pita, home-made pickles, and the best ingredients. It convinced me to revisit! For vegetarians, Aragoz offers 3 sandwich options: falafel, braised fava beans and battered cauliflower---a solid variety! For meat eaters, there's a wider range, from halal steak to fire cracker calamari. For my first order, I decided on battered cauliflower. Just like the owner said, I could taste the difference in the pita, probably the best I've ever had. Most pita is very dry and brittle, but Aragoz's is moist and chewy, so tasty! The batter on the cauliflower also tasted fresh and the fixings include a rich creamy sauce along with parsley, cucumbers, red onion and tomatoes. On the side are hot pickled peppers, which are juicy---beware taking a bite!---and packs a nice kick. As for value, vegetarian sandwiches are $6 and meat sanwiches are $9. If you want fries, salad and a drink to go with, it's $12 for vegetarian and $14 for meat. Pretty amazing for the quality! If you check on their website, you'll see that Aragoz is actually a catering company and that you can order many more types of dishes as well, which can be ordered in advance, but not as walk in. Overall, I'm excited to have this quality option on the east side. It's a solid place to grab takeout and I'll be sure to try their online menu as well soon.

The 2 things I would rate most highly is the service and the vibe of the place…read more The waiter who attended to our table was very nice and trained very well to answer and give menu suggestions to help in the ordering process. The owner of the place, Maha, was also extremely pleasant going around tables and chatting with the customers. The restaurant space was a little tight, but it has a lot of character. It gives a very welcoming and homey feel. One minor gripe I have is that the utensils appear to be sealed or covered the wrong way. It was the ends of the spoon and fork that was covered with napkin and not the actual surfaces that come into contact with food. The ends of utensils that actually come in contact with the food and mouth just lie there directly on top of the dining table which is not the most sanitary. As for the food, the food serving size of the meal is great and is usually more than enough for a person. Ordering appetizers on top of the brunch meals will be good for only those that are heavy eaters. For food taste, I personally would rate it as OK to good. It was not bad, but just not something I would personally consider to rank as among my favorite breakfast fare. I enjoyed it more for the novelty of trying something different which is Egyptian food. The food was also a little on the pricey side. We (group of 2) came in at 5 minutes after 10 on a Sunday morning and were lucky enough to find seating (2 tables that can seat 4). When we finished and left at 11AM, there was already a long lineup outside.

I tried a variety of the meats and they were cooked to perfection--tender, flavorful, and well balanced with just the right spices and sauces. Nothing was dry, which made every bite enjoyable. Even though it was busy, the service was quick and very welcoming. The restaurant itself is spotless and clearly well maintained. They also offer traditional desserts like Om Ali, knefe, and rice pudding. If you want a more relaxed café vibe afterward, there's a café in the same parking lot run by the same owners with very comfortable seating and even a prayer room. Overall, a wonderful experience that definitely did not disappoint. I'll absolutely be back.

I remember looking over and thinking, "What is this place that's so full of life?" It was bustling with people and had such a great energy. I had never tried Egyptian food before, but I was feeling a little adventurous. I'm really glad I did. A few dishes were recommended, but I was told the Koshari is beloved in Egypt, so that's what I ordered. Be prepared for a bit of a carb coma, but it's absolutely worth it. It was delicious. The mix of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, and crispy fried onions worked surprisingly well together, especially with the sauces they give you. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Toronto.

Karas Egyptian Restaurant - Dry and burnt meat

This was the WORST $50 I spent during the entire 2 Covid years when I was buying take-outs from…read morerestaurants. Karas bills itself as authentic Egyptian food that is entirely charcoal-grilled. I tried 2 dishes: grilled chicken & grilled minced lamb. Both dishes cost me $50 and is worth less than $20! Here's why: 1) the portions were miserly! For a $30 plate (with tax), take a look at the photo - 4 tiny balls of minced lamb sitting morosely on the plate. 8 bites in total! 2) the meats were as dry as OLD SHOES! Charcoal grilling is an art form. The lamb, which was supposedly wrapped in lamb fat, should have been succulent and juicy. Instead, as the 2nd photo shows, it was burnt and very, very dry. 3) the chicken was no better. Dry to the point of being stringy and chewy. It was supposed to be dark meat (leg), but it was so dry I couldn't even tell if it was dark or white meat. 4) For this miserable dinner, I waited a full 28 minutes - when I was there at 4pm and I was the only 1 of 2 customers. Unacceptable! This was a real disappointment, and a total let down, because Karas shawarma (by the same Owner) was actually quite decent, which was why I decided to try their restaurant location. My verdict: Eat at Karas shawarma, when they have their 2 wraps for $20 promo on Mondays. That's worth eating for that price. But Karas Restaurant most definitely is NOT worth eating at - at this price point & for such bad quality!
