My boyfriend and I came here on a Wednesday night for Winterlicious. I picked this place because I was curious about Egyptian food and wanted to learn more. We made the reservation in advance and were seated on time (at 7:30 p.m.). The place had a cool vibe- the décor was inspired by Ancient Egypt. There were seven tables in total that could seat a group of 2-4 people for each table. A young man was our waiter for the evening. My boyfriend ordered Egyptian Lentil Soup, Koshari (Cairo's ultimate street food - layers of rice, lentils, pasta, a bold tomato sauce, caramelized onions and garnish), and Bird Nest Konafa (vermicelli-like pastry filled with whole pistachios). I ordered Bissara (chilled bean and herb puree garnished with caramelized onions, and served with side bread and lime wedges), Ful and Tameya Mix and Match Platter (ful and tameya (similar to falafel) platter with balsamic tehina, salata baladi, lentil hummus, and bread), and Bassbousa (sweet, classic Egyptian semolina moist cake, made in the traditional style). As we ate each dish from our 3-course meal, we discussed the flavours: My boyfriend's meal: Egyptian Lentil Soup- he enjoyed the light flavour of lentils in the soup, it was a generous portion Koshari- generous portion, however, he said the taste was bland- tomato sauce added a bit of flavour, but he felt that it needed more (he added hot sauce to it) Bird Nest Konafa- the outer layer was crunchy and the inside was moist and chewy. He enjoyed the various textures! My meal: Bissara- deep and rich flavour, thanks to the herbs- delicious! Ful and Tameya Mix- falafel-like flavour, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The hummus was thick and also delicious, generous portion size. Bassbousa- moist and very sweet like Indian desserts, this would be great for anyone who has a sweet tooth! Throughout the evening, our waiter came by a few times to check-in on us. We had a great time eating and talking, it felt like we travelled far away for a good meal. A great addition to the neighborhood!

This is the only Egyptian restaurant in Toronto that I know of. If you're craving Koshari or Ful & Tamiya then that's the place to go. If you're unfamiliar with Egyptian cuisine it's worth a try at least once. Friendly service. Egyptian ambience. Great for dine in or takeout.

A one man operation (at least when I was there) who takes care of the front of the house and the cooking. The service was good, and the space is very clean. I love Egyptian falafel which are made with fava beans, and called "Tameya". Although I did enjoy them here, I wish they were fluffier and they were a little burnt. The accompaniments were fresh and full of flavour.

If you're looking to try koshari (Egypt's national dish) or have delicious traditional Egyptian food that is vegan / vegetarian, Papyrus is the place to go. Located conveniently on The Danforth, it's easily accessible by TTC (Bloor subway line) and there is Green P parking nearby. The restaurant has a very small indoor dining area at the back, and only 2 small tables at their outdoor patio, so making a reservation is highly recommended. Getting take-out is also popular at this place. The interior is small but cozy, with nice papyrus & ancient Egyptian lettering adorning the walls. The menu consists traditional Egyptian dishes such as koshari, ful (typically served for breakfast on the streets of Egypt), and tameya (like falafels, but made using fava beans and herbs instead of chickpeas... hence the green interior). Everything we tried was super delicious! We came here mainly for the koshari - Egypt's national dish. It was packed with flavours and textures from the rice, lentils, chickpeas, pasta, and tangy tomato sauce. My favourite part was the topping of crispy caramelized onions. (You can order extra caramelized onions, which of course we did.) The ful here was one of the best I've tried (I liked that they mixed in vegetables with the fava beans) - very flavourful and great with the bread or koshari. The Salata Baladi was fresh and had a strong citrusy taste from the dressing, which I liked. The tameya was crunchy and flavourful as well. The Missaka consisted of soft velvety grilled eggplant slices that were covered in tangy tomato sauce. It was served cold, which made a nice appetizer (served with bread and arugula) or complement to the other main dishes. The lentil hummus went great with the bread and everything else as well. We also ordered side roasted vegetables, which came in a small bowl of mainly roasted bell peppers and onion, with some pomegranates mixed in. The owner was friendly and explained things very well (such as recommendation on which items to taste first to get a nice balance of flavours). Great dining experience overall.

I wasn't sure what Papyrus' papyrus would read after the drinks and main stages of our meal. The ice teas (karkade-hibiscus and saffron-lemon) were refreshing on a hot day. And the dokka (sesame/dry herb mixed; eaten by first dipping pirate bread in olive oil, then proceeding to dunk the bread into the sesame/herb mix) and traditional beef hawawshi (lean ground beef pressed and cooked into Egyptian bread) were both interesting. But my palette wasn't wowed. Then came the desserts. The konafa was a delight, a delicate bird's nest stuffed with cheese and I think glazed with orange and lemon. And the mastic icecream with pistachios was smooth and velvety, while also carrying the heft needed to satisfy. And so Papyrus' papyrus thus reads:

Interesting spor for Egyptian food. I tried the Ful sandwich and an order of hummus. Both were delicious. Very filling and flavourful and a bit messy. The server was also very friendly and knowledgeable.

Truly a gem of a place; food and service are amazing. I like that the menu has not that many items (for the main dishes, there are basically three major specialties of Egyptian cuisine), but everything is done to perfection. All the food is vegetarian, and frankly the meat is not missed; everything is great without it. I had the mixed platter with Fūl and Tameyas. Fūl (made with fava beans) was tender and flavorful (go for the spicy option: the spice level is just right, not overwhelming), and the tameyas were better than any falafel I'd ever tasted. The owner cares passionately about both the culinary craft and about the customers' experience. He patiently explains the menu to every newcomer, and is incredibly personable and attentive. We'll be back for sure, and hopefully try some of the enticing-sounding desserts as well.

They service was lovely the food was really neat. Items I had never tried before and they were great about suggesting things to try. It was great they have Ace Hill too. Nice to be able to get an adult beverage at a quick serve. Vegetarian and yummy!

Nice place. Nice decoration. And nice waiters. New kinds of dishes. And not very expensive.

Konafa. Cold version of Knaffe. A wonderful way to have dessert without it being too sweet.

The owner of the place, Maha, was also extremely pleasant going around tables and chatting with the customers. The restaurant space was a little tight, but it has a lot of character. It gives a very welcoming and homey feel. One minor gripe I have is that the utensils appear to be sealed or covered the wrong way. It was the ends of the spoon and fork that was covered with napkin and not the actual surfaces that come into contact with food. The ends of utensils that actually come in contact with the food and mouth just lie there directly on top of the dining table which is not the most sanitary. As for the food, the food serving size of the meal is great and is usually more than enough for a person. Ordering appetizers on top of the brunch meals will be good for only those that are heavy eaters. For food taste, I personally would rate it as OK to good. It was not bad, but just not something I would personally consider to rank as among my favorite breakfast fare. I enjoyed it more for the novelty of trying something different which is Egyptian food. The food was also a little on the pricey side. We (group of 2) came in at 5 minutes after 10 on a Sunday morning and were lucky enough to find seating (2 tables that can seat 4). When we finished and left at 11AM, there was already a long lineup outside.

I tried a variety of the meats and they were cooked to perfection--tender, flavorful, and well balanced with just the right spices and sauces. Nothing was dry, which made every bite enjoyable. Even though it was busy, the service was quick and very welcoming. The restaurant itself is spotless and clearly well maintained. They also offer traditional desserts like Om Ali, knefe, and rice pudding. If you want a more relaxed café vibe afterward, there's a café in the same parking lot run by the same owners with very comfortable seating and even a prayer room. Overall, a wonderful experience that definitely did not disappoint. I'll absolutely be back.

I remember looking over and thinking, "What is this place that's so full of life?" It was bustling with people and had such a great energy. I had never tried Egyptian food before, but I was feeling a little adventurous. I'm really glad I did. A few dishes were recommended, but I was told the Koshari is beloved in Egypt, so that's what I ordered. Be prepared for a bit of a carb coma, but it's absolutely worth it. It was delicious. The mix of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, and crispy fried onions worked surprisingly well together, especially with the sauces they give you. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Toronto.

This was the WORST $50 I spent during the entire 2 Covid years when I was buying take-outs from…read morerestaurants. Karas bills itself as authentic Egyptian food that is entirely charcoal-grilled. I tried 2 dishes: grilled chicken & grilled minced lamb. Both dishes cost me $50 and is worth less than $20! Here's why: 1) the portions were miserly! For a $30 plate (with tax), take a look at the photo - 4 tiny balls of minced lamb sitting morosely on the plate. 8 bites in total! 2) the meats were as dry as OLD SHOES! Charcoal grilling is an art form. The lamb, which was supposedly wrapped in lamb fat, should have been succulent and juicy. Instead, as the 2nd photo shows, it was burnt and very, very dry. 3) the chicken was no better. Dry to the point of being stringy and chewy. It was supposed to be dark meat (leg), but it was so dry I couldn't even tell if it was dark or white meat. 4) For this miserable dinner, I waited a full 28 minutes - when I was there at 4pm and I was the only 1 of 2 customers. Unacceptable! This was a real disappointment, and a total let down, because Karas shawarma (by the same Owner) was actually quite decent, which was why I decided to try their restaurant location. My verdict: Eat at Karas shawarma, when they have their 2 wraps for $20 promo on Mondays. That's worth eating for that price. But Karas Restaurant most definitely is NOT worth eating at - at this price point & for such bad quality!
