I was…read morelooking for a different pizza spot than my usual go to's and GMD&P had good reviews, some making pretty bold claims. I went to order online and realized there is the common convenience fee tacked on. I decided to order the old fashioned way, go there in person. Then I can browse the store while I wait. It has the usual stuff you'd expect to find in mini markets. But there are hidden gems in the dusty corners like a vintage bottle of Trader Vic's Mai Tai cocktail mix. I didn't check the price but I'm wishing it still had the price tag from 1975 on it. Made me think of the Werewolf of London drinking a Pina Colada and his hair was perfect. Another good find was a dusty bottle of Crème de Menthe. It made me want to look up the recipe for a Grasshopper. I don't know if these old mixer's are for sale or just museum pieces. The sandwiches look pretty good, I'll have to try one another time. Overall the veggie pizza was pretty good, but a bit heavy on the veggies. I generally like fewer toppings, but everyone is different. I suppose in the future I could ask to go light on the toppings. But I'd rather they be generous rather than skimpy.

I'm not the first to tell you about this place and I'm definitely not going to be the last. To…read morestart off, I do have to say the smell in here is nothing short of delicious on a rainy day, and with a soup in hand and a roast beef sandwich in the other, I'm easily protected against adverse weather conditions I'm otherwise spoiled by in California on most other days. Now, the tomato bisque soup is on the milder side when it comes to flavor but that's completely fine given that the sandwiches themselves are packed with flavor. I've never had such tender roast beef before and honestly I'm just impressed I didn't mistake the bread for a cloud with how soft it was. The people here know their craft and I'm lucky enough to have tasted it myself. If you come in here, you're going to love their offerings, just don't forget the soup! Cheers!

The owner was an absolute delight--chatty, warm, and sweet, and he honestly reminded me of Belle's father from Beauty and the Beast! He made us feel so welcome and even brought us a sample of his homemade tomato basil soup, which was delicious and tasted truly homemade. The turkey and avocado sandwich is apparently a favorite, as is the pastrami. I'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the avocado and cheese, which was fresh, simple, and satisfying. What really makes Berge's special, though, is the atmosphere. It has that cozy, old-fashioned neighborhood feel where you can settle in, have a good sandwich, and actually chat with the person behind the counter. Such a sweet little La Cañada institution. We'll definitely be back!
