My team and I were working in the area to help a wildfire-affected couple and found what looked like a great sandwich spot. We showed up and the infamous elderly woman with a walker was working the cash register. We asked for a bbq roast beef sandwich with chopped pepperoncini (the menu lists available sides and condiments, this was one). The old woman shook her head no and wagged her finger at us. We tried to push back and request the peppers, and it seemed that she wrote down our specification. We the asked for a Reuben with horseradish added (again, available on the menu). The woman made a disgusted face, wagged her finger in our face again, and told us no. At this point a gentleman from the back let us know that they would be able to accommodate our request, and the woman again appeared to write something down. We ordered a pastrami sandwich, add pickles. Again, finger wag. At this point we were told pickles will come on the side. Ok, understandable. Get me out of here. Ordered two more sandwiches with no specifications because we didn't feel like being berated again. Now the credit card transaction: Woman didn't understand how to handle the transaction, again the gentleman from the back had to explain to her that she can tap the card on the machine. After 20 minutes we received our food with absolutely zero modifications and no explanation. I guess she was faking writing down what we would like. Honestly, the worst part was the sandwiches weren't even great. For such a highly rated place, my entire team was disappointed with our orders. We could've made better at home with a normal amount of effort. Not worth the time, hassle, or attitude. Will not return, and left a bad taste in our mouths for the local businesses. My hiusband has been coming to Berge's since he was a kid. This family owned restaurant had been open since 1971. The restaurant is cute and decorated with nostalgia over the years. Service is counter service and the bring the food to your table. We got our food rather quickly. I had the avocado and turkey sandwich and a side of potato salad. I had the honor of having my order taken by the original patriarch at the counter, and she even asked if I needed a receipt. There's a reason Berge's has been around for over 50 years and the food did not disappoint. Enjoyed the classic tuna melt with grilled sour dough and my friend had the roast beef. Found from glowing reviews on yelp so I came here mid visit to Descanso gardens. The shop was super simple, there is parking in the back and the door was open so you don't have to walk around and enter from the front. Toasted pastrami sandwich - So good. They weigh out the pastrami and give it a good sear before throwing it on the sandwich. You get so much more flavour from doing that. The bread was toasted well and every was so good together! Would recommend! Avo roast beef sandwich - Slightly different from their famous avocado turkey sando. Avocado was super refreshing and they had the right amount of mayo to keep the flavours together. Roast beef stuck out a bit, so I would probably go back to the turkey to keep the balance. read more

Berge's is old-school in the best way. Wood paneling, cozy vibe, nothing fancy.Just solid sandwiches done right. I tried the grilled artichoke sandwich (on what I think was buttery sourdough) and it was crispy, gooey, flavorful, and it even held up after I took it to the park to eat. The grilled artichokes were soft and tasty, the cheese melted just right, and paired with jalapeño chips it was the perfect $10 lunch. What really stood out though was the service. nstead of just calling my name, they walked over and personally handed me my order. A small detail, but honestly you don't see that much anymore and it made the experience feel that much better. Definitely a spot worth stopping into if you're in La Cañada. read more

Was really looking forward to this place after the positive reviews, unfortunately what I ordered, I was not impressed. Granted, I didn't get what was most recommended, but based off of that sandwich, I probably will not be going back. First of all, the most recommended sandwich is their pastrami, and I happen to get their French dip. I am a sucker for a great French dip, and unfortunately, this would do not live up to my expectations. And when I say it did not meet up to my expectations, I don't mean that I'm being a snob, I mean the "Au Jus" was incredibly salty. I'm sure this was a one off, but unfortunately, I happen to get it. I'm not saying that I would never go back, yelp hasn't let me down. So I would definitely consider going back here again, unfortunately I don't live close to this area so the likelihood of that happening is very slim. Overall, without the dip, the sandwich was really good. Now I wish I would've ordered the pastrami so I could give a better review in my opinion since that's what most people talk about, but unfortunately, I happen to choose this dish and I wish that I chose pastrami instead. read more

We have had a consistent experience coming here for sandwiches, and they do well at making orders placed over the phone within 15-20 minutes which is convenient. I like that they have their own parking lot and have never had trouble finding parking while coming here whether for lunch or at the end of the day. Inside is nothing special but at least they have tables and chairs if you want to eat inside. I prefer this as a better option to a subway with better meats and breads but it always seems to leave me wanting more. I'll be back if I need a quick sandy but otherwise we have another go to sandwich place that beats this one out. read more

I liken the artichoke sandwich to a tuna melt or chicken salad sandwich with a artichoke flavor to it. The dressing over powers the artichoke creating a milder subtlety. It's very different then the grilled or deep fried artichoke panini. With the side of chili, it's a perfect pair on a cold LA winter. A grade, clean, plenty of seating but for the most part I think people get it to go. Still can't believe it's been here for this long and I was here 40 yrs ago. . Yelp hours are incorrect, better call and see. Also closed Sunday and Monday now. Prices were very cheap, however the owner stated the menu is changing soon. If you like abuse, then this is your spot! The manager was condescending and over the top rude. I was trying to order a sandwich for my husband over the phone, who was having surgery and needed the person who was picking him up to grab something for my husband to eat in the car on the way home (1.5 hours away). This was the most challenging experience for what should have been easy. I felt berated and worn after placing the order and when I asked to pay, he told me they don't take payment over the phone. I begged and pleaded to no avail. So, the driver paid for it and I venmoed him. I will NEVER EVER be going back here. Sorry, not sorry. read more
