I've been coming here for over 4 years now and I feel like the quality has gone down in terms of the aquatic part of the store. I bought a fish that only started to get sicker and sicker as days went on from the store and had to return it which they thankfully allowed me to. Some of the fish experts aren't as knowledgeable as ones used to be in the past. I brought my water in to get tested as well to see if it was something that was wrong with my parameters, only to find out my water was tested with testing strips and not the more accurate test tubes with droppers. Just disappointed overall since I would walk through the fish aisles and saw multiple fish dead that weren't fished out and even saw other fish eating the dead corpse of another fish. I will be taking my business elsewhere even though I used to love coming here a lot. read more

I love this place. The staff members helping me have always been very knowledgeable. You can tell they all care that what you want to buy will be well taken care of. The last 4 months I have started to fill my tank. 2 mollys and 4 neon tetras All fish purchased was from this store. About a week ago I purchased 6 fancy guppies and 3 plants. Yesterday I went to feed them and had 4 dead fish black mollys are sitting at the bottom not looking good and all my guppies are dead. I'm pretty sure that whatever they have came from this store. Since everything I had came from this store. Some kind of fungal of the fins and body. One week one bad purchased wriped out my whole tank. Be careful of buying fish here. I thought it was good overall for 3 hours of fun with the kids and parents. The down side was, my party hostess was a tad late which made things for me and the guest confusing. She was a nice lady, But I felt when you are in charge of hosting a birthday party or any event, you need to be on-time meaning a few minutes earlier before the guest arrive. Went in this week 19th to purchase a bunch of fish for one of my tanks. I've been buying tanks, plants, rocks, food, everything from this location throughout this year. Couple thousand bucks or so spent there this year.... Call them on the 20th, about 18 hours later from purchase, and let the manager know all 8 tetras are riddled with ick. They say just bring them in we will refund you for them.... How am I supposed to get 6-8 tetras out of a fully planted tank? Impossible... I have dozens of fancy Shrimp and 30-40 nerite snails in it, can't treat it for ick. They confirmed they got the tetras in hours before I bought them and they didn't check them. They went through three employees hands before leaving with me in my car. 0 quality control. They have no period of incubation but for the first time after dozens of times buying fish there, manager said before you put any fish from us in your tank, you need to incubate.... They said we tell that to people every time people buy fish from us. Wrong never heard that until now. Manager was a jerk on purpose. Said it wasn't worth his time or anyone's to deal with this. I asked for them to send a professional to retrieve them from our tank and replant our 500-750 dollars in plants, so that we didn't have to treat our tank for ick and kill hundreds of dollars in snails and shrimp. He said not worth our time. I asked to speak to next manager up and they ping ponged us back and forth trying to get to this guy Dave who supposedly oversees both locations. Wouldn't take our call and eventually was able to find out this place uses a third party to deal with issues like this. We now have a claim open with this pet company which seems like it will go no where. This is doing to cause major loss, hundreds of dollars and the loss of living creatures, they don't care. Refused to send someone to retrieve them said it wasn't worth the time. Place totally chases the buck and has zero quality control and doesn't care about living creatures, well some of the people don't apparently. Made no recommendations how to help other than bring them in. Really bad situation, avoidable. Refuse to help right a wrong. They are currently treating their massive neo tetra tank October 21 2023, go look and see for yourself. This place is so big it doesn't care or have time to help save the lives of the things they sell. Again go check out for yourselves, ask about the whole tetra tank with ick and the shipment they literally got and threw in the tank and an hour later left with me no checking if any were sick and literally didn't check when bagged and given to me either. I wish I could give ZERO stars!! My daughter convinced me to drive almost an hour away to go to this store due to the aquatic part of the store. First of all, it explicitly states on the door walking in AND all over the store that masks, six feet of distance, and correct wearing of the mask must be adhered to in the store. Can you please explain to me why your employees are exempt from this? The brunette in charge of the dogs felt it was ok to run around without one. If there was nothing else that went wrong I would never return to your store again because of this, but it gets worse. There are at least a dozen people working but yet not one is willing to help when needed. The vibe of the store is just horrible. As a customer walking around to look at products I felt as if I was in their way. They walked all over me and through me, but yet couldn't stop to help. I needed help getting fish so I walked up to the fish counter. 6 people - I KID YOU NOT - 6 people were just standing there. When I asked for help you would have thought I asked for their firstborn. Not one employee was helpful, friendly, or approachable. You need to find out who the manager was that was in charge for Thursday, March 19th, and have them re-evaluated at their position. Actually, I take that back. They should just be fired. Their toxicity in the workplace just has to go. I have worked in many places during my lifetime and this store screams poor management. You can tell like most places that management set the tone. The tone in this store is horrible. I will NEVER step foot in this store again and I will make sure to scream it loud and clear on all social media to go anywhere but this place. I have purchased close to 20 fish from this store and all but 3 have died within days. Every time I buy cherry shrimp they die as well. My tank is fully cycled, all parameters are normal and within proper range. No ammonia, minimal nitrate, no nitrite, ph and hardness in par with local tap water. I see diseased fish every single time visiting this store and they continue to sell fish out of the infected tanks (multiple tanks are run on the same filtration system using the same water). Fish are mislabeled and sometimes not labeled at all. The pygmy and habrosus cories are always sick and never last more than a day or 2. Employees are paid commission which leads to several of them hounding me every time I visit the store. There is a fine line between being helpful and annoying. They cross this line constantly and need better training regarding this. I've even had employees appear annoyed with me when I'm just browsing minding my own business. There is a fluval edge 5 gallon "display" tank at this store that has had 2 rummy nose tetras in it for a while. This is not proper stocking protocol and is a poor example for customers. The only reason I come back to this store is for medications and food. I'm very cautious purchasing plants here since a crypt spiralis I got there was loaded with scuds. They do stock some medications that can be hard to find and it is much easier to drive there and pick them up then waiting a week for it to be delivered. If you are purchasing live fish and frozen food make sure to watch them bagging your items after purchasing. Multiple times I have had to correct employees that wanted to put my frozen food and live fish in the same bag together. Overall this is a poor example for a fish store and I truthfully feel that they are doing a disservice to the hobby. I can only imagine how many new aquarists have been run out of the hobby due to the poor practices of this shop. Stay away. read more

This review is mostly for the Aquarium Adventure (AA) service department which is horrendous. First, there is no accountability for the service which is like trying to move a mountain to actually hire. There is someone you must contact to hire the service, however, this person seems to try very very, very, hard to not allow you to actually hire the service. Despite many pleas to just schedule me for the service, many roadblocks are thrown in your way including irrelevant questions to prolong the process happens. It is actually surreal. I have tried to use the service multiple times over the years but was unsuccessful in getting a date for the service except for one single time. I was hoping to hire them to do maintenance on my aquariums twice per month. I have called the managers to express my concerns and no one really cares. Everyone seems to have no interest in actually getting the service to you. One employee even tried to escape any sort of responsibility for helping by claiming that the service department is really not a part of the company. He said it was just an affiliate so there was nothing he can do. He stated that the service manager is almost never available. I once spoke to one if the service managers and he just punted the responsibility back to the service department gatekeeper. I even called the corporate office and expressed my concerns there and never heard back from you. So the only way I will fight back is to not tcontinue to bring all the money I use to spend at Aquarium Adventure there any more. the first time i came to this store was about 6 months ago because i was about to start my first salt water aquarium, i already had purchased a 75 gallon regular tank from petco and i came here for help to get the right equipment, and as soon as i asked one of the employee he rudely told me to get rid of my tank and to spend 6 to 8 thousand for a newer tank, didn't even tried to give me options or tips i asked if i can just buy equipment one at a time and he just said no that i had to spend all that money right away im not sure his name but he was a big nerdy guy im not sure what his problem is but the two times ive been there he never wants to help me im not sure if hes racist because i'm a native or its just the way i look. i got help somewhere else and so far my regular tank has been running for 6 month and all my fishes and corals and healthy. read more

Tank maintenance/servicing department deplorable. Courtney was the last tech to service my tank and through conversation I found out she literally mixed untreated water and chemicals in my aquarium! When I confronted her on this beginners mistake, her response was "oh I'm not a freshwater tech, I know saltwater". Guess she thinks it's ok to mix freshwater and salt in a tank full of coral and livestock too. Tommy lied to me, telling me how experienced Courtney was, specifically in freshwater husbandry. I have been here a few times and have been impressed with the aquarium side. If my review were based on the fish and reptile side I would rate them 5 stars! Now my review is down to 2 Stars! By far they are the most impressive fish store I have seen in the Chicagoland area. Granted this is based on a limited number of places visited. Still impressive knowledge with a very good fresh and salt water selection with great plant choices. Also it's hard to find employees with the dedication to this hobby that the people here have, well done and keep up the good work. My only advice is break off and become a stand alone location. First, I want to clarify that I am ONLY speaking to the Aquarium Adventure part of the store. I have a HUGE problem with selling puppies when millions of healthy, adoptable puppies and dogs are slaughtered every year in shelters. If I ran the world, breeding and selling dogs and cats would be outlawed until the shelters were empty and all healthy, adoptable cats and dogs have homes. But I digress. I don't really know enough about the small animal part of it to have an opinion. Regarding birds, they keep a large number of parakeets in an open play area and they are NOT used to being handled by people. I'd give the bird part 2 1/2 to 3 stars. They all look healthy and cared for, but birds really needs to be socialized for them to be good pets. Now for the aquarium part. I have been keeping fish since 2010. At present I have 16 tanks up and running, and that's soon to be 17. 8 of those are stocked with live plants, and 2 of those tanks are 60 and 75 gallons. My 2 large planted tanks are home to mollies, swordtails, yo-yo loaches, and Congo tetras. I have bought plants from various online sources and the results are usually disappointing. Large tanks need large plants, so unless I want to pay $25 for 1 Amazon sword I have to get the little 4-6 inch ones and hope they grow in, which they usually don't. The plants I've gotten there are consistently big, healthy and robust. Not only are they still alive a month or 2 after purchase, they're usually thriving and growing. Even at full price, an Amazon sword over a foot tall and bushy is around $15. Fish club brings that down to $12. Get them on sale and they're about $7.50. They have a good selection of fish and they carry fish you're not going to find anywhere else. The problem is their very inadequate health guarantee, which is 48 hours. I've questioned them on this, and their answer is "we have no control over them once they leave the store". Well, yes...but most fish illnesses take longer to present themselves than 48 hours. So I don't buy fish there unless they are inexpensive and I can't find them anywhere else. read more

Okay, so here's the obvious stuff: Puppy mills are bad, so don't support them by adopting a dog from one. They have open cages for most of their small animals. It's truly annoying to have parents letting their kids touching all the small animals and terrorizing them. The kitties always look so unhappy, it's depressing. The fish? Don't usually last. They're okay. Not as bad as a Petsmart or Petco. Now, this is why I go to this store. Their selection for fish supplies, food, plants, and cat supplies is amazing. So good. I can find anything and everything there. It's always stocked, neat, and organized. The prices are always accurate. I go there for the frozen blood worms for my blood parrot fish Pumpernickel. She's a super picky eater, and the gentleman that assisted me helped me find some food she would like. Overall, I have to give a solid three stars for that. read more

This is a Petland chain, recomended by a friend for being real big on fish. We went because our son is a fish fanatic. They have two ponds setup, which are so pretty especially the one in the front of the store, that even has a shark in it! The other pond has a waterfall with some fish that's eyes poke out the water. They also have soo many fish, both freshwater and saltwater variety. The dogs there also had us entertained. Love the fact that we can pet them and check them out in our own private section. So many animals there to mention but we all had fun. Definitely a place to take the family on a Sunday afternoon. read more

The bad: All of the fish I have bought have died shortly after purchase. I will not buy fish from them again. I take extreme care in acclimating them properly. Prices are really high on equipment and food. The good: Best aquatic live plant selection I have ever seen in a local store. Although recently I have seen some great local breeders selling awesome plants the GCCA swap meet (Greater Chicago Cicclid Association). Good selection of supplies and equipment. In a nut shell I would buy plants, and equipment/food that you cannot get at petsmart or if you do not want to pay shipping online. I really wanted to like this place. My father in law just set up a 210 gallon aquarium through them and they were very accommodating at the time. I guess that was because of the $ factor. I recently went in to purchase some driftwood, stone, & decor for a 20 gallon tank. Guess that's small fry for AqAd here because I received poor help and walked out without anything over a pricing error on *thier* end. First, the decor. There's not much adventurous about spending $15 for a 3" piece of driftwood when I can get the same brand at a competitor for half the price. Larger pieces (10"+) start at around $60... yet I have wood with similar quality & dimensions in one of my tanks *right now* that cost $18. I'm not even talking about wood mounted to slate, which ads another $30. Anyway, I found a small piece of wood for $8 (orange tie, prices are color coded in bins), and was going to spring for a $40 mounted peice for good interaction and aquascape. During my time looking at driftwood I was told to build the wood (good advice) because it has tannins, which are poisonous (terrible advice, they aren't, and can have a wonderful effect on our aquatic friends. Still, going to get the wood because I know better. Get to checkout and whaddya know? The $8 driftwood magically becomes $28! I point out the tie and am told "Well, that's for spiderwood, and that isn't spiderwood. It's a different wood." Ok, but it says "SPIDERWOOD" on the screen, and it's the only thing rung up. "Well it's not spiderwood." Well, I'm done at AqAd. Don't see any reason to go back if they're going to spout off bad information and price things wrong, yet make the customer pay for that mistake. Between plants, decor, fish, etc, I was prepared to drop a pretty penny over the coming weeks and now... Competition sucks for a place with bad practices is all I'm saying. And listen - stop supporting puppy mills. Petland is the last major holdout for selling puppies out of tiny boxes. It really does need to stop. Adopt, don't shop! read more

I love going to Aquarium Adventure! I may browse the puppy pound but really go there for the fish. Everything I need for my hobby, they have it all. Food, supplies, fish, it's a one stop shop. Their displays are outstanding. I enjoy the ponds and the saltwater tank that sits in the middle of the store, but I especially like the large freshwater tank with their "rivermonster" fish. I tend to wait and buy their fish when they have a large sale, but being a rewards member in the fish club can also save you money. The employees are often asking if I need help with anything and most seem pretty knowledgeable about the store and its products. read more

Read before you encounter this situation like me Long story short, poor customer service, bad business!! I had a bad experience with the fish department today and all the people who had helped me. Yesterday, I was in search of finding a blue tang and they had a few tangs in separate tanks . I had asked the girl (blonde hair appears to be in 19-22yrs of age) why the prices are set differently from one another. Her response was that "the prices are set according to their size." So my options were basically large, medium or small costing from 79 to 49 respectively. I wanted to choose a small decent size tang which showed as written on the glass of the tank 49.99, if you are a fish club member it will cost 10 dollars less. So i purchased my fish and went home. The next day, I found out they overcharged me for the tang which costed me 79.99. So I went back to the store and told them about this mishap. I told one employee who told another employee and about 5 or 6 employees were surrounding me telling me that they did not have a tang in the system for that price. It was a good 10-20 mins of arguing about the price of the tang. Upon inspecting the tanks and the tangs, I have noticed a change in price. Unfortunately, they have switched the price of the tang overnight and they now all cost about 79 dollars. The guy maybe the manager of the fish department was arguing with me and talking to me as if i had mistaken the price of another fish with the fish i bought yesterday. I told them "listen, don't treat me as if I'm stupid, i was here yesterday and i knew what i saw." Long story short, they gave me the price without fish club discount so i lost about 10 dollars even though i just joined the fish club and paid 20 dollars for it. Word to the wise, if you are planning on buying fish from this place, take a picture of the price on the tank and document it. This could happen to you as well. The prices at this store are just absolutely outrageous. I have rarely seen prices this marked up at any store i have ever frequented. They have every excuse in the book for why they are so high but i simply do not buy any of them. Please do yourself a favor and compare their prices to the competition...you will see for yourself. Reading the reviews for this place I had pretty low expectations walking in, and they still weren't met. Review on the Aquarium section: 1.(-) I was appalled by the state of the betta fish. Most of them having clouds of algae, cloudy water, excessive waste in their containers. Additionally I saw multiple with fin rot. I saw beautiful Koi bettas but decided against them because I (a) didn't think they would last long and (b) didn't want to pay money to this store. 2. (-)Their plants are in a communal tank with snails which, for me personally, is iffy. I wouldn't purchase those plants as it increases the likeliness of introducing bacteria/parasites into my currently perfectly healthy tank. 3. (-) As others state, things are fairly marked up and there isn't too many things you can find at this store that you couldn't easily get online or at another pet store. Other than maybe, their planted driftwood and live rock. (Amazon is actually a great place to find filters and tanks) 4. (+) If you speak to the right staff member, they are knowledgable and should be able to answer your question to some extent. However, it is always good to come in having researched beforehand. Other part of the store: The other part of the store is...depressing, to someone like me. I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that people who have or want pets should treat them properly, with no exception for children. I believe that as a pet store you have a responsibility to ensure the safety and happiness of the animals you are keeping. Small animals are easily accessible to be handled by children and I saw children almost literally throwing the dwarf hamsters around, squishing them into corners, and overall mishandling them. All the mom had to say to her children was "Don't be too rough". They could easily spare 1 or 2 staff members to supervise those areas. Of course, on top of this they sell puppy mill pups and I don't even want to get started on that. read more

I made an account just to write a review of this place to warn other people. I will give them that there is a very wide selection of fish and aquatic plants at this store. They have huge display tanks with fish that used to be impressive, but now they just look extremely cramped now that the fish are large. There is also a huge saltwater tank in the middle, but the light is never on in it so it looks pretty sad, and the fake corals look absolutely awful, especially in a store that specializes in fish. The problem is, most of them are 2-3x the price at other stores, and offer absolutely no difference in quality of livestock. In fact, I would say that they are lower quality. Been keeping fish for 15+ years, and I have never had trouble keeping fish alive from any other source other than this one, and that includes hardy fish such as guppies and swordtails. All went into an established tank that held much more delicate fish, but within 18 hours, all were dead. Took them back, and the store only allows for "store credit," which in this day and age is just an obvious way of saying you know your product is of subpar quality. Another indication of that is their warranty: it's only 48 hours. Even cruddy places like PetSmart and PetCo have 14 DAY guarantees on their fish. Their equipment and supplies are also pretty overpriced. Would never buy something like a filter or tank there, ever. Even the big box stores that run at MSRP are way, way below this place. Anything more than odds and ends such as dry food, air stones, air/water line etc is best bought somewhere far away from here. The staff overall are pretty short on even basic knowledge of the species there short of the most run of the mill species, but like to brag about all of these tanks they have at home (which to any experienced fishkeeper would know they are a complete disaster if they actually exist). Many of them also like to try to get people to buy fish that "go together" simply because they are from the same part of the world. Anyone that knows fish knows that it isnt that simple. The absolute final straw I had was after noticing a tank full of rams had ich and pointing it out to multiple associates, one of the same associates still tried to sell me said german blue rams and said "I should have a quarantine tank anyways." Quarantine tanks are supposed to be for problems that you do NOT know about, not for fish that you buy that are already sick. So I'm supposed to buy a pair $20 german blue rams (again, 3x the price of other sources), then buy medication to fix the ich (easily another $10-20), and then when they die from stress and/or disease in three days, they won't refund the money because it's outside of the 48 hour guarantee. Right... I will never shop there on principal alone. No associate should be trying to sell fish that she knows are sick to customers, especially with a disease as contagious and possibly deadly as ich. Had it been some other person that does not have 15+ years of experience, they may have well bought the fish and introduced them to their tank at home which would have infected everything. Shame on that woman and shame on the store for not only employing people like that but also not quarantining new shipments. read more

What a joke of a pet store... everything's way too expensive and the customer service is some of the worst I've ever experienced. The salespeople aren't interested in helping you unless you're going to spend money, if you're not then they ignore you or are downright rude, acting like you're wasting their time. It's obvious they don't care for their animals based on how disgusting the tanks look; even the display tanks which are supposed to be gorgeous are covered in algae and cyanobacteria. Bought 4 rainbow fish which subsequently died about 2 weeks later. The rainbow fish showed signs of ICH after about one week and died a few days later, also killing my pleco of about 6 months. Some staff are helpful, some are still working on their GED. Be skeptical when you buy fish from this place. read more

This place is horrible, they treated my husband and I like we were criminals because we were going to buy a harness for our dog, and let him use it during the shopping trip, then as we're checking out with a 300 dollar purchase they were very rude and was in need of a very serious attitude adjustment, not to mention my fish started dying off 2 days later and my tank is over run with snails, they harassed my mother and father about a soda she had when she went back In from the car to help with bags from the store, Will never waste my time shopping there again, never have I ever been treated stop rudely! read more

Lots of products, including, live fish, hamsters, birds, dogs, cats, ect..; however, I am only reviewing the fish/coral. They have a knowledgeable staff, limited number of fish species, but lots of juveniles, also mixed bag on the corals limited large SPS. However, they have a bunch of product that are typically only available on the internet. Furthermore, this place is enormous. Overall I like it, but this place is VERY EXPENSIVE! read more

This store has a lot of knowledgeable staff, especially in the fish department (which is what they are known for)! If you have a questions, ask these people and they will lead you in the right direction. EXCELLENT STAFF!!! The prices for ordinary products are over-priced, but go get the info out of the staff, then just purchase online for cheaper. EXCELLENT quality in fish as well! I've never seen a sick fish in their tank either. I just purchased 12 fish from there 2-3 weeks ago and they are ALL still alive. Don't listen to the post of the person buying 20 fish and then having them all die. Most likely they put the fish in a new tank without it being cycled (no wonder they all died). 4/5 stars only because of the over-priced products read more
