I have been a loyal Petco customer for 7 years now, and unfortunately encountered some sub-par customer service today. I ordered a bag of Merrick dog food in Jan-2023 that was expired and infested with bugs. I received a refund, which obviously is the absolute bare minimum that should be considered from a customer service perspective for a bag full of infested bugs. I was still left with the problem of going back out to purchase another bag from a physical location since I had to feed my dogs, so my expectation was to receive a heavily discounted/complimentary bag for the inconvenience. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me, and that small gesture would retain me as a repeat customer for years to come. The store manager finally offered a 10% discount, which is better than nothing, however I was disappointed at how it was handled and how she would not even look me in the eyes to communicate. I have reached out to corporate to see what can be done, if anything and will provide updates in the near future on the outcome. Many thanks to the cashier, Sarah for her assistance. I went the shop and want to buy a hamster. When I standing in front of the small animal section, there is nobody come and help. I walk to the counter and ask for help, a lady seems not happy with my call, she walked and talk to me with an impatient face : what you need. I said I want to see the hamster, I am willing to buy one home. She opened the cage, then do nothing . I am so surprised, I never see an employee like that. I asked: can I take a look the little guy. She told me: I hate the rat so I don't really want to touch it. (OMG) , the end, she grab a box and put it in and hand it to me. I try grab the hamster out, but the hamster jump out the box fell on the ground. The lady was yelling at me:GOD DAMN IT , you let it runaway ( wow-what a great service) i never meet an employees say that to a customer. After I put the hamster in the box, she keeps yelling ( I can't sell it to you today, I have to get the hamster a therapy before I put it back to the cage) I was like: what? I never heard that before. By the way, when I pick up the hamster from the floor, I hit my head to the glass cage, and she keeps yelling me without any comfort word. I walk out the store with really bad disappointment. That's the worse customer service ever. I called and leave my number for the store, I hope the store manager call me back and solve my problem. I feel so bad for the lady, if she doesn't like the animal, why she work at a pet shop? So shame on her. read more

I had an absolutely amazing experience at this PetCo. I have come here for years for my hamster and dogs, but recently decided to add a kitten to my home. I was picking out some things for my kitten and there was an amazing employee! I regret not getting her name, but she's a shorter girl with dark hair and glasses. She knew absolutely everything about cats and kittens and gave me amazing advice. She also gave me plenty of online resources to educate myself further. She went above and beyond what her job calls for and gave me a fantastic experience. I really appreciate that she cared so much about my kitten and cared that I was aware of things to provide him a healthy and happy life. read more

Second time the groomers have called to cancel appointment with 2 hours notice. They request customers to give a 48 hour cancellation notice but don't give the same courtesy. Rather rude when I called them back. read more

We were talking about dog training, and when I had mentioned I never put my pomeranian through training and how he is a bit spoiled, she had asked his breed and age, then responded "...put him down" I believe someone who supposedly loves animals should never make comments such as this. read more

Had a grooming appointment at 8:45am, I was let in because the girl was running 10 mins late, a couple minutes later I get told that she won't be arriving until 9:30am or later. It's very upsetting because it was a 30min drive from me and its just unprofessional to have apologized available in the day if they're not going to be completed at that time. read more

I like Petco, I really really do. It's the checkout experience that bothers me. I shop sales trying to save money, and I'm a senior. On the keypad, I used to be asked if I wanted to donate to save a pet. I could say yes, or no, depending on my situation. Now, I am asked in front of other customers. I don't appreciate this. On top of that, yesterday after saying 'not today', then after I was given my total, I was asked if I wanted to 'round up' to the next dollar. I don't want to sound like grumpy gloria, but I'll donate if I want to donate, put a jar out, and I'll give you my spare change. More places are doing this, and I'll go somewhere else now. read more

We took our Golden Doodle in for grooming. We were shocked when we picked her up. She had been shaved very closely, which was not the way we keep her. It is uneven with some areas shorter than others. The groomer shaved her so close that one of her paw pads was nicked. It bleeds every time she walks on pavement. Now we have to watch out for infection on top of waiting 6 or more weeks for this terrible cut to grow out. Never again! read more

This will be the first yelp review written by me but I felt is absolutely necessary. My mother's shih tzu is around 4 years old and on average has been groomed once a month his whole life without issue. She recently took him in to Petco for grooming. He has been there multiple times before but this time was a nightmare. When she picked him up and got him home she immediately noticed that he was not well. He was unable to walk up the stairs so she had to carry him. When she picked him up he screamed a little. Within 10 minutes of leaving the store she called back to see what had happened and was told that he'd bitten at the lady when she was clipping his nails so she cut to short but that it was common. To begin, he has never tried to bite anyone, ever. He is very playful and kind. From that point on he was shaking, not eating or drinking and would scream at the touch. I personally am not an animal lover, but when I saw for my own eyes how hurt and uncomfortable he was it made me want to take action. We called the store again and was again given the same story. We took him to the vet and found out 1. His nails were fine and not cut too short so that appeared to have been untrue. 2. He had a injury in his back that was causing his pain. We know that unless we are told the truth we will never know exactly what happened to him but we all agree that he will never go to another Petco for grooming. So I will say just be cautious and be aware when you choose who will care for your pet, even for a short time. My mom's little dog will be ok but he shouldn't have to suffer any period of time for someone else's error. read more

WHAT A HORRIBLE MANAGER THIS STORE HAS. I came in to get a store credit on cat food I had no need for after my cat died a while back. I came into the store, explained the situation to an old blonde-haired lady who said she was the manager. It's not unusual for stores to give a credit if you don't still have the receipt, but as soon as I told this crabby manager that she said "Maybe you bought this at Petsmart?" I wasn't asking her where I bought the food. I know I bought it at Petco. It is only sold at Petco. Was she trying to steer me to a different store so the place I bought it from wouldn't have to give me a credit? Even the cashier standing their told her Petsmart doesn't carry it. Then the manager had the nerve to say "I have no proof that you purchased this cat food." I told her I didn't walk out of her store with a case of stolen cat food. How rude can this lady be? Then she went to "verify the purchase" in the back on her computer. Well, if she had the ability to do that, why did she make the all-ignorant comment that she had no proof that I purchased it? I waited over 5 minutes and she never came back. I told the cashier standing there to give me the name of the regional manager and their phone number. Crappy blondie, the manager, finally called up front and ok'd the credit. What a rude jerk of a woman. She should not be managing anything. No wonder on a Saturday afternoon, after standing up front by the register for 10 minutes, there was only 1 customer that came thru. My guess is others don't find this to be a welcoming store. I had intended on buying something from Petco that day, but I changed my mind after that experience. I WILL NEVER SHOP AT THIS DOWNERS GROVE STORE AGAIN. WHO HIRED THIS LOSER? Do not bring your dog to a class or socialization event here. I was appalled at how dogs were permitted to mount and aggressively attack other dogs during a puppy socialization event, which was dismissed by the employee as "playing". My dog crawled under the store shelf to get away from a pitbull puppy before the pitbull finally got a "timeout", being held like a baby before being permitted to return to "playing" and actively attacking my dog who was curled up passively in the corner as I clenched my hands in my pockets so as not to "interfere" with their "playing", as my dog whimpered for me. One star is being very generous. I had an appointment for 3:00 p.m. I was actually in the this location the morning of my appointment and told the girls I would be back at 3. When I showed up I stood in the office for about 10 minutes then walked out and asked where the groomers were. I was told all of the groomers had gone home because the manager had to leave sick and no one can cut dogs bair without the manager being on duty. I did not even get a courtesy call to let me know my appointment needed to be canceled!!! Absolutely nothing more then "oh I'm sorry, yeah they should have called you." The employee told me when I came back that they will probably give my pup a free grooming. Guess what I will not be back and I am returning everything I purchased that morning. This chain does not deserve my business. I lodged a complaint with customer service and was advised I'd get a call back within 24 hours... I am still waiting on that call..... The employees at the register were actually very nice, they should find a new respectable place to work. read more

I love, love, love this Petco. I drive 25 minutes to go to this petco, simply because I like it better than the closer locations. I bring my boxer here for training and the trainer is wonderful! I call her the Dog Encyclopedia. She is very knowledgeable about dog behaviors and breeds specifically and has done a great service for my dog. I recommend coming to this petco for training over any petco I have been to, to see their trainers. The trainer is great, along with the rest of staff, who is always helpful and gives great opinions when I have questions or can't decide on a product. Petco has now become my top choice in pet stores! read more

Grooming Salon: horrible expierence. Explained exactly what I wanted done to my Yorkie poo and came back to a different type of cut. The haircut to her head was botched and uneven. Groomer missed a couple of strands on her ears as well (I'm being very kind when I say acouple) Immediately asked for store manager and she seemed shocked when I asked for a refund until she saw how my Yorkie poo looked. My dog is absolutely terrified of the groomers. I have taken him here a handful of times to Amanda and she has worked so well with him and always does a great job! However, I am very disappointed with the length of time that they keep my dog there. My dog is there for about 4 hours each time, and most recently when I walked in after 3.5 hours, he was sitting in a cage barking, still not done. So my terrified dog is most likely sitting in a cage for 2-3 hours each time, which is not what I'm paying for. Amanda has made me feel better about taking him to get groomed, but Petco's time standard is not okay when I have an appointment! read more

We were going to take our Golden-doodle, then the pandemic hit & they were closed for 2 months. Our dog had gotten a lot of knots by then & we knew that they would have to shave most of his hair off. Well, they shaved him alright! He had razor burns all over! Some so severe that we had to put ointment & get a cone for him so he wouldn't make them worse. That wasn't the bad part. When we got home he was so traumatized he ran upstairs and laid in his bed & wouldn't come out. He's a puppy loves to run & play but since we got him home all he does is mope around & sleep! It's been 4 days now & he's still not the same but getting better. I don't know what she did to him & it's probably better that I don't! read more

I've never had any problems with Petco in general as I've been shopping here many many years I'm in a have a fish lover and this is my birthday present (getting new fish for my new tank) I just recently moved to Chicago from DC and it took a little while to get settled in and get my tank set up with all the water cycle properly for the fish I had and still have a Boucher for 50% off my purchase I spent over an hour in the store and was looking forward to this day for a very long time they had excellent customer service and the back the girls name was Tiffany and she knew all the inns and the outs of the fish I was even going to come back on Tuesday and make more purchases I already spent already over $300 for the initial visit to this visit and was purchasing a nice amount of fish and material when the "General manager" Linda at the register very rudely deny my purchase moreover she denied trying to assist me and excepting my 50% off rain check voucher that is certified from Petco that was given to be on Black Friday I had already gotten approval from the saleswoman Tiffany one of the managers and then this "General manager Linda" didn't care that was my birthday she took the fish away is if I was three years old and I'm turning 33 she is very snide very cool way and I am going to be calling corporate to find out where the problem was with an official voucher even the employees were telling her it was okay but she had it out for me from The very start and it's very unfortunate as it everything went as planned/what was told to me true meaning if I could've just made my purchase instead of having someone threatened to call the police on me and take my fish and my other items away denying any assistance i'm truly at a loss of words there's no way I can get the store five stars and I love to be outgoing on yelp but I have to warn you beware of Linda she made me feel extremely uncomfortable and extremely rude I have never been talked to like that or for at least as long as I can remember! :-( read more

Amanda was great with Cooper! He is a super fluffy, hairy border collie that will not let me brush out his butt!! Needless to say he had a few matts in that area and by his arms where his harness rubs. She did a great job removing the problem areas while maintaining his beautiful look. He was brushed out so beautifully and believe me I know he can be less than cooperative in his problem areas. Ironically, he did not seem to give her the fuss he gives me, so she most definitely was able to assert the needed dominance to gain the alpha position for him to listen and be safe in the environment and still get the job done. She was honest and fair in the pricing and what services she recommended for cooper which I was appreciative for. I will return to Amanda without a doubt to make coopie even more adorable if that's possible! read more

I just ran to this Petco to pick up a bag of dog food. It was supposed to close at 9, but it was 5 minutes to 9pm and the doors were locked. I got the attention of a young lady with glasses and red hair who showed me her phone, while a bearded gentleman was rolling his eyes. She showed me her phone that it was 8:57 and they were closed. I would rate a half star if I could. The customer service in grooming is extremely unprofessional. As a customer, I would walk in and sense the tension in that salon. Especially when I requested one of their top groomers. The girl rolled her eyes and her tone was less then welcoming. As far as pet grooming is concerned, the young lady who cared for my pet is no longer there...can't imagine why?! She would always go above and beyond Petco's customer service and give her personal touch. Noone at the Downers Grove location can duplicate her professional attitude & services. The first and last time I will take my dog here for a grooming. My lab is very easy going, almost anybody could give him a cut as long as they don't hurt him, even at that he is still very patient. I brought him in and showed the lady some pictures of how I wanted it cut, fairly simple, nothing fancy. Low and behold when I came back it was nothing of what I had asked for as far as the cut goes. She told me it was because my dog was very anxious and unruly which made it difficult to cut. First time I have ever had that issue in 8 years. I figured I would try this place since it is a lot closer that my regular groomer but apparently the convenience isn't worth it. read more

The absolute worst bath my dog of 8 years and her 14 year old predecessor every had. I was visiting my friends in Darien, we both have Old English Sheepdogs. On one of my visits we took them to PetSmart. It was a pleasant experience and the "girls" looked great. To back track a little, I moved to the city a year ago and am still trying to find a perfect groomer like I had in the burbs. I would still drive her to this groomer, but got insulted one time too many about the condition of my dog. I had previously tried to explain to her that THIS IS YOUR JOB. I PAY YOU TO TAKE CARE OF MY DOG. BIG BUCKS AT THAT. EVERY 2 WEEKS. But if she couldn't just breeze through Wilma's coat in a few hours for $20+ per hour, she wasn't happy. I don't make $20 per hour. Buit my dog is worth every penny. So, back to PetCo. I personally gave her a scissor cut. She looked great. Even the groomer at PetCo complimented my work. All I wanted was a bath, brush, nails and pads done. Due to the drying time for an OES coat, it should take up to 3 hours. Well, Wilma was done in 1 1/2 hours. Since I was in a hurry to get back to my friends dinner party, I didn't pay much notice. The next day, I looked at Wilma. Whoa. She didn't look like she even got bathed. Nails and pads were not done either I wrote to PetCo. The CSR told me she would forward my complaint and photographs to the Store Manager at the Downers Grove store. Never heard a word from the store. Then, after another groom, I sent the CSR pictures of PetCo's groom and this last one. No comparison. She agreed and told me the complaint and photos would be sent to the District Manager. Again...no response. Needless to say, I will NEVER give PetCo my business. Had a horrible experience earlier today. I returned some items worth $60.... I just bought $260 from this store 2 days in a row... And brought my two dogs for grooming yesterday. Anyways, as I was returning my items at 10am, not many people, mind u... The cashier looked for a manager to override, so I can get cash back since I paid with a debit card. The manager or supervisor named diana, snapping n bickering told me that they didnt have enough cash to give me, so I should just come back. I told her, not a problem, just put it back to my card, if u dont have enough cash. She snapped again saying she cant do that. I asked her, how can a store like petco, only have less than $60 in their cashier??? This diana found out that she thought I wanted the total amount of one of my receipts for $140 to be returned..... I told her, as a manager, she shouldnt be snapping at me not knowing the amount. Iwas so pissed. She shouldnt be working in customer service, moreso in management, if she has no idea what she is doing. On the otherhand, a shawn, one of the sales agents, was very kind, helping me pick items I needed for my 2mo old havanese 2 days prior. Too bad that manager was ignorant. I was going to petsmart for a long time buying stuff for my Lab, even going to their classes. I was.considering petco coz shawn was so helpful the other day BUT after this incident, im definitely not going to Petco anymore. Petsmart definitely is my store. Also, when I brought my 2 dogs for grooming, for the price that I paid, its not worth it. I always bring my lab to Bella's in bollingbrook. They are 10x better, for bath, special conditioner for shedding, teeth brushing, nail clipping, its only $50, with a bandana, n treat bag n toy.... And my lab will smell soooo good for 1week or so. I just thought of trying petco... But was just ok. I will still bring my lab n havanese to Bella's in bollingbrook for their monthly grooming. read more

Went here to get fish for my sons little fish tank. We milled around the fish area for quite some time before anyone came to help us. She was nice and caught the specific little guppies we wanted. We also got 2 tetras, just any two we told her. She put the fish in bags and walked us up to the counter to ring us up. No questions for us about anything. Did we have food? A tank? How long its been running? Anything of that nature. That was fine, because its not like these were our first fish.So we get home and one of the tetras swims around for a while then nose-dives to the bottom of the tank. Dead. The next day we bring the fish back in a ziplock with some tank water in it. (We read the instructions on the bag to bring back the fish and a sample of water) the checkout guy first says he cant do a return it without a sample of water. "Um, theres water in the bag" "Yeah, but the fish is in it so I cant do a water test." "Well, heres the receipt... We bought 3 other fish Last Night. And they are fine, so I don't think it has to do with the water." ( we had the 1.5 gallon tank running with water conditioner for a week before adding the fish, and after floating them in their bags for 45 mins.) " ok well I can give you a refund, but I cant sell you another fish without a water sample" "Uh... Ok fine, we'll just take our $2.75 down the street and buy a new tetra from Petsmart. Its on our way home anyway." So, instead of keeping our money in your store, you just cost yourselves our business. Not that $2.75 is all that much at all, but its not like we are crazy fish serial killers. We just wanted to exchange our clearly defective dead fish. Thanks for the inconvenience. We will be getting our fish and other pet supplies elsewhere. read more

UPDATE.........I have recently visited the Petco again and this visit was to get some assistance with the fish we have. I explained to Brenda(Petco Rep) what the issue was and instead of offering me tons of items to buy to correct the problem, she gave me great advice on what the issue could be and how to troubleshoot the issue with some cost saving techniques. How wonderful was this news. She took the ph of the water and informed me what the issue is with the water in my area. She went above and beyond what is expected of her job responsibilities by giving me real life situations which could help resolve/minimize my problem. Thanks to Brenda, she helped me focus on something which I never thought was the root cause of my tank issue. I am so appreciative of her work and customer service skills, SHE is the sole reason for my return to this Petco. Thanks Brenda, I appreciate you and the knowledge you convey to customers. read more

I took my 2year old yorkiepoo tot the grooming salon at this location. I was greeted with friendly people, I wasnt forced to purchase anything extra, i was told what all would be done and aproximately what time the dog would be ready. I received a call once the dog was ready, she smelled wonderful, the grooming salon did a wonderful job on her. I will continue to go to their grooming salon. read more

I visit this store quite a bit, as we have a new puppy. The store staff is always friendly, and willing to help. However, we brought him in for this second grooming experience and it did not go well. I gave what I thought was a good description, of the length to be cut off.....what spots needed it the most. What spots to leave alone, because they were already very short. Holy cow! When I picked him up he was practically naked!!! They cut Wayyyy to short on the legs, which was one of the areas I told the. NoT to cut...literally to the skin. Worse part is they shaved off his entire beard! I was horrified! read more

Last month, I have been calling different petstore locations about dog training. I called this location inquiring about pet training. I spoke with Katie, the manager, she mentioned about the puppy play they have and suggested that I come that night (Wednesday) and mentioned Sara, the dog trainer, is a good one. I brought my dog to participate and it was first time for both of us. There were lots of dogs, different breeds and sizes. My Yorkiepoo got scared and Sara was very helpful and making sure my dog won't get scared and fight other dogs. My dog's not exposed to that many dogs at one time, Sara managed the play time so well in spite of the numerous dogs present that night. She's on top of everything, very attentive and helpful. I was very happy although nervous at first. Inquired about the dog training that night before we left the store and picked Sara's puppy1 class. My dog, Jersey is graduating this Sunday, 12/21/14 and looking forward to puppy2 class still with Sara's class. I bring Jersey every week for the social play, they have schedules all week and for her Sunday puppy class, and Jersey loved it so much. There was a big improvement ever since I brought Jersey in this Petco location. Sara, the dog trainer, went above and beyond her duties in making sure the dog play time and puppy class for Jersey are successful. Any issues about my dogs I discuss with Sara and she's been helping me. I would definitely recommend this location and specially Sara for dog training. I was very disappointed with my visit yesterday. Went to buy a dog cage, pad and case of dog food. I was shopping for my mom who is having serious surgery and I am trying to get her errands accomplished. When I saw how expensive the cage was, for a very small one, I called my mom on the phone and asked her if she wanted me to buy it because it was the last one. She is a senior citizen on a fixed income. She said she had a coupon she received in the mail the day before for 10% off. This would have saved about $15.00, which may not seem like much, but to a senior citizen, it is substantial. I didn't think driving to her home (20+ miles) was worth the price of gas and the tolls along the way. In speaking to a very nice sales woman, she called the manager and he came over. I explained everything to him and he wouldn't budge with the 10% (plus my mom is a Petco rewards member). The sales woman asked the manager if he could call the store near my mom to see if they had the cage and he said, "no, I am too busy," My mom is not physically capable of driving to the store near her but I thought I could pick it up when I went to her home for other errands. I find this to be very selfish and inconsiderate on the part of the manager. We are talking about $15.00 or so for a frequent member who is physically ill awaiting surgery and trying to get her affairs in order. We will not be shopping at Petco in the future. I don't think $15.00 for Petco would put them in bankruptcy. read more
