Very good chocolate milkshake. I ordered a large Brownie and slice of pecan pie to go. There weren't that many people in the store but yet it seemed that orders were beginning to pile up and only one server was delivering them while another server was working the shake machine. I waited 25 minutes for my pie and brownie that were already made because I had to remind the person took my order that I was still waiting. she delivered to me the pie and Brownie and didn't say thank you or sorry for my wait. Just got into town and were starving. Ordered and paid online. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, and it was awful. Barely heated and the bread was a rock, not edible. My husbands burger was ok, but again bread was a dried out and inedible. Ordered a fried pie, did not receive, expect it would be horrible, too. I gave a $5.00 tip. This restaurant is ok for the fare it presents. Was not really impressed with the chicken salad. It was a little spicy for me which was a surprise. I don't think I have ever had spicy chicken salad. One thing I was totally in love with was the bacon jam. It is awesome!!!! Just be warned, as addictive as it is, you will not be leaving with a jar of it. I went next door to the general store to purchase some (seeing as how the general store is attached to the restaurant, I assumed they would sell jams and sauces used on their menu). A cute, little find. Quiet and nice views. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. Our family had breakfast there. It wasn't anything that was over the top but, good food. You order at the counter, grab your own drinks from the drink station and when your food is ready they bring it out to your table. I wish they didn't use styrofoam cups, plastic utensils and plastic condiment cups. That is just me trying to help make the planet less filled with plastic. Sub par service and a particularly insane emphasis on a smoke flavor that borders the use of a 1:1 ratio of liquid smoke to meat being smoked. I'd avoid like the plague if you're interested in pulled pork. read more

Stopped in for the first time this evening and loved it. It's very laid back and casual dining. The menu consists of burgers/sandwich's. The chicken salad sandwich is the best!! They have a topping bar with just about anything you could want on your burger. I like it because you can customize your burger any way you want it. The meat is fresh and the staff is friendly. On the weekends they have live music on their outdoor patio. The patio is heated btw. The bathrooms could use a good scrubbing though. Today I ate there for the 1st time & was quite impressed. Not at all crowded at noon on a beautiful cool, sunny Thursday. I didn't realize customers have to order at the counter & have food delivered to the table, but that wasn't a problem. I had the "Chicken Salad Salad" which was huge, fresh, and delicious. The side-winder fries were great - very crispy and hot. We didn't realize we had to serve our own condiments inside the restaurant (we ate on the covered patio), but the server was very nice and brought us ketchup for the fries. We now know the rules for our next visit. Very quick and friendly service, plenty of parking, and the restaurant, patio area, and men's room were all very clean. It was a beautiful 45 minute drive from Knoxville, and we will be back as I'm anxious to try the Grilled Ham and Jalapeno Pimento Cheese sandwich. The adjacent "general store" was very well stocked with unusual items (squirrel feeder made to look like a picnic table). Nice bike trails in the area too so we will try that the next time (we don't have a bike rack yet). I would definitely recommend going there. read more

I had the double stack burger with sidewinders (fresh cut fries) and my wife had the chicken salad with sweet potato waffle fries. Both were fabulous. The topping bar was really good - lots of toppings. The spicy feta was especially good. We were surprised at how reasonable it was. Service was good. The host explained that they intended to add more draft taps. Only craft beer available now is light and dark calf killer. The chef at the Dancing Bear oversees their menu and service and has done a good job on improving the atmosphere, service and food. They were both recently acquired by the same company. It's a great place to grab a quick meal. They are open for breakfast and lunch. We'll definitely frequent again! read more

If you're looking for a quick spot for lunch after visiting the Cove, don't let the Express in the name fool you. We waited almost 40 minutes after ordering. Burgers were okay, sidewinder fries were good, mac n cheese was good, but not worth $4.99 as a side. Also not a fan of a place that has a tip option before you even receive service. I tipped and really wish I hadn't after taking so long. The staff does run around, but the only "service" provided is bringing your food and clean tables. You order at counter, get your own drinks, and have to get back up to put toppings on your sandwiches. Try it if you have ample time. So grateful that Apple Valley Cafe is adhering to COVID protocols! They were one of the only restaurants we found that was distancing tables, wearing/requiring masks, and offering hand sanitizer. Our party of four stopped in this afternoon on our way to PF and G'burg. Two of us ordered what appeared to be a menu item that would dazzle - Smokey Mountain gumbo. Menu said it consisted of crawdads, andouille sausage, etc., served with creamy grits and bread. While the taste was OK, they was ZERO evidence of any of the ingredients listed on the menu - oh wait, I did find one dime sized piece of sausage, forgot that. Now the price was like $7.99 so it did seem a bit low priced, but that is no excuse. Truth in menu anyone? It did not say a "gumbo sauce" that had the ingredients waved over it, one expects to SEE them, even one piece of each item. I'm a local so have eaten here often but the amazing level of food this time blew me away. My go-to is the Mom Burger which is always perfect. I was a little disappointed that they have done away with their sweet potato fries, something I always looked forward to, but the curly steak fries sure made up for it. My son had a brisket sandwich and raved about it. Living around St. Louis he has many choices of Bar-B-Q so for him to say this was the best brisket he's ever had speaks volumes. Along with his meal came a potato salad like no other. It is basically a full blown bacon & cheese stuffed baked potato in potato salad form and yummy? Oh you bet!! If you leave without trying the fried apple pie you are missing something great. Along with the fantastic food comes friendly, fun service and if you have the chance to chat with the manager, Tina, do it. She is a doll and one of the reasons this should be on your To Do list when you're in our little town. We tried the cafe this time. Food was ok and the people were nice, But no one at the door to seat you ar tell you about the place, where to go or how the place works. People crowded in milling about doing the same thing. There was no room at the door. We felt like cattle in a shoot. I would guess $7.99 for a burger would include fries, nope $2.99 and they were cold and limp extra drink, nope $1.99. For 3 people $40.00!! And the burgers were the frozen kind you get from Sam's or Costco. I know tasted just like the one I get at home. Visited the gift and card shop next door. Looked like they were going out of business. Bare shelves. So I stay with my original opinion, Total Tourist Trap. Never again!! read more

My intentions from this review were never be offered a free meal and I still won't be returning, but I appreciate having the menu change addressed. That shows me that this business actually cares about their reviews. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I really hate to complain, but my experience today was not good. It was my first time trying the cafe and will unfortunately be my last. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich which, according to the menu, comes on a croissant and should have had lettuce and tomato and come with a pickle and kettle chips. My order was to go, so I didn't notice until I got it back, but there was no lettuce or tomato on the sandwich and no pickle in the box. That in itself was frustrating but everyone makes mistakes so I shrugged it off. However, I started thinking about how I was charged an awful lot for the meal and after checking my receipt I noticed I was charged $1.98 for the kettle chips that the menu said all sandwiches came with.. I don't mind paying extra for a side, but would have skipped chips had the menu not said they were included. I double checked that didn't read it incorrectly because the up-charge was for fries or onion rings. They should definitely change the menu if that's no longer the case, and maybe notify someone as they're ordering if they're out of something that comes with their meal. read more

We stopped for breakfast on Sunday October 15. There was no sign indicating serving times. We knew 10:45 am was later than usual for breakfast but the young lady directed us to the counter beside another couple who was ordering breakfast. As we were looking over the breakfast menu a man suddenly leaned over the counter and literally snatched the menus out of our hands and said, "We're now serving lunch." I've never been treated so rudely at a restaurant. If he'd offered us toast and coffee as a mini breakfast, we would have stayed. But we left, and I have no plans to ever return to spend any money at the Apple Valley Stores Cafe, Gift Shop or Lodge. The man who acted so rude should find another occupation, one where he doesn't have to talk with customers. He is not an asset to Apple Valley Stores & Cafe on Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend, Tn. We ate at Panera Bakery in Alcoa, Tn. They appreciated our business. OCTOBER 20, 2017 UPDATE on this Review: I must update this to say that the management of Apple Valley Cafe has offered an apology which I accept. They assured me that our experience was an exception and that they will counsel the individual involved so others will not have the same experience we had. If you are in the area this is a must stop. The menu is enjoyable and delicious. We frequent the area and this is our go to while in the area. We didn't know that they served breakfast...silly us.. as we are always in the area in the afternoon. Yesterday we saw the food coming out of the kitchen and omg it looked delicious. My go to there is the chicken salad and omg... to die for. They did have one there as a special that was good... but doesn't compare to the original. Original has grapes, apple and deliciousness in each bite. I would like to see both....possibly another, share the menu. The sidewinders are fabulous. My wife is a HUGE grilled cheese fan and the one that they make is hands down the best. She gets all the cheeses they offer for it...I want to say 5 but may be wrong but is very tasty as well. Apple pies.... if you like the taste of home made then these are it. Very obviously made in house for sure. The environment is very inviting and comforting. The staff were all very friendly and smiling and in times like these was beyond warming to see. Had the pleasure of chatting with Tina the GM and she is wonderful. Everytime we are there you can see her working magic keeping things organized and moving. Again, in times like we are in now, seeing everyone busy and smiling and helping everyone, it's comforting to see happy staff. Coming from a previous short order cook I know how trying it can be under normal times. Looking thru the window and seeing the cooks working together even with smiles, fabulous. Decided to eat at Apple Valley Café since our favorite restaurants have closed for the winter. We ordered a Ruben, a hamburger and Hoppin' John. The Ruben was dried out and the slaw tasted funky. The burger was only fair. But the Hoppin John was excellent! It took a while to get our food and several tables that came in after us received theirs before we did. The restaurant is much smaller inside than it appears from the outside. The Apple Valley Cafe could be a lot better if they have proper management & a menu with better selections. read more

The food is exceptionally lackluster, my burger was worse than a fast food burger... Lacking in seasoning and taste the last time I visited. The Mesquite Turkey sandwich was okay. I wasn't wowed by any means, but for a place that charges extra for sides while the sandwiches are already priced in a manner in which most restaurants would provide fries over chips I was disappointed.
