Time to update my long overdue review for the place I have a love hate relationship with. The experience you get at the Apple Store is (unsurprisingly) based on how slow the business is going. During the times I've been when it's busy (like on Friday afternoons or weekends), you'll be waiting forever. At least you'll get seen even when you don't have an appointment (happened to me many times), but you'll for sure wait hours. And be ready to be ignored. However on times when it's pretty quiet, employees are hella efficient and friendly to you. The most recent time I went in to pick up an online order. I was probably in and out in less than two minutes and left with a smile. And so I can't knock this Apple Store for being what it is: in the flow of business. I am a little surprised to see the low ratings for this Apple Store. I came in for a Genius appointment to see if they could fix my iPhone which decided to randomly stop working. The staff who checked me in for my appointment was really friendly and even started the diagnostic process early so that when the Genius showed up all the notes were already in the system and they could quickly figure out what needed to be done. I ended up having to get a new phone since they couldn't fix the problem and the whole process was hassle-free. The employee who actually handled my case was also really friendly and efficient. I wish all retailers operated like this. I would really recommend making an appointment. Some people who came for walk-ins were told the wait time was over an hour. Only one person came to help over even though there was line and so of course I "missed" my appointment and had to reschedule. Didn't help at all and only told me to "come earlier" next time. I came here twice, once to get my water damage diagnosis and the next time in dire need of help after a non-Apple-certified repair shop completely damaged my laptop in their attempt to fix it. That's a different story though. The first time the guy who gave me the diagnosis was very friendly and suggested that I actually go to another repair shop for a cheaper price, which I did but probably wasn't worth it. Of course they charged me the $755 flat repair fee, but to me that is fair for the damage that the other repair store (M.A.C.) did to it. My logic board wasn't working anymore and M.A.C. suggested that I just "live with it" because it cost thousands to repair, while Apple was willing to repair everything and put it back together good as new for $755. The second time I came here the nice man at the genius bar, his name was Wayne, listened carefully to my predicament and stayed with me and my dad while we worked out our options. Wayne was very patient with us, answering all of my dad's clarifying questions and he seemed genuinely concerned; he only left us when we asked for some time to think about what we needed to do (buy a new laptop, or repair the old one). Even then he came back when he saw that we were ready. Thank you so much Wayne for helping us :) For all those people complaining about waiting forever for an appointment. Several days ago my iPad died. Dead. Nothing. So, long story short. Went online to make an appointment in Emeryville -- my closest Apple Store. For whatever reason failed in that attempt so took the iPad in. Won't bore you with details, but no help whatsoever. Ended up going home, going back online and making an appointment in Walnut Creek. After a two day wait, went in, talked to Alex who was very friendly and knowledgeable, but talked about older iPads and battery life. Not too encouraging. But suggested going through the options. I picked up my new iPhone, explained to the person who brought it to me that I was familiar with idevices but had never had a phone, asked him specifically about the sim card and where and how to use it. He answered my questions, pointed out on a nearby model where it would go, described how small it was. Not until I got home did I find out that a sim card was needed to activate the device. I called the store and found out that they actually had blank sim cards that they could have given me. Apple promises: "With Personal Setup, we'll have your new Apple product up and running before you leave the store." For all the good the Apple associate was I could have had the phone sent to my house. I had scheduled an appt for 12 noon and was promptly greeted upon walking in. I was then asked to have a seat by the genius bar for the next avail genius--Travis. I told him that my brand new iPhone 5 was not functioning -- calls sounded staticy. He called my phone and knew how to troubleshoot it right away -- the receiver was defective. He asked if I had 10-15 minutes so that he can switch out the part. Here's the catch, the part would of cost $59 if it wasn't within the 14 days policy. However i was a lucky one who caught the problem right away. I gladly handed it over. 15 minutes later the phone was ready and functioning as it should. I have an older MacBook Pro. The power cord started to fray and no longer worked. I went to the Emeryville store to buy a replacement. They had none in stock and suggested I call the 4th st. store. I did. The staff are always so nice at this store. This time, an employee told me they were sold out as well, but that she had one laying around that she could give me. What?? Seriously! Overall, the customer service at this store is always excellent. If they can save you money by referring you elsewhere, they will. As a result, I am more inclined to buy my new products from them. It's been a rollercoaster of a week trying to buy our new laptop. First we tried to go to the Bay Street store, and it was closed for the week(!). Then we tried to order online and use the Barclaycard financing, and got jerked around for four days (seriously, a total nightmare). Finally we came to the 4th St. store at our wits' end, and now in a rush to get the new computer before an international trip. Eboni, the manager, was really as good as it gets. She was sweet as could be, totally understanding of our frustration, and willing to do literally anything she could to hook us up and make us feel better (and leave happy customers). 1) Apple product issue and 2) Apple Store service issue: 1) Apple Products going downhill? After many years of strong service and products, I have experienced two major hardware issues. I purchased my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, 4 TBT3) on Jun 25, 2019. The first computer breakdown required a complete replacement of my motherboard within 6 months of purchase on December 8th, 2019. Now, within the pandemic, I am having to cover the cost of the replacement of the display. My display started having horizontal striations across the whole surface in June. I did not make it into the store until August 19th, 2020, today, because of pandemic issues. I now have to pay for the repair of $578+tax (work order estimate at this point, so could be more or less). I don't understand how Apple, in this moment when they are doing so well, can't take care of their core costumers. I have purchased over 5 personal Apple computers over my short lifetime, and now have questions about the product quality and service in a way I have never had to before. I have lost 4 total weeks of work time and income, 3 weeks in December and 1 week now. This is not acceptable. 2) The store manager, Frank Turple?, was not willing to offer anything other than the rote response of you must pay for your repair. Sorry that your laptop is not working. There is no care related to the two major breakdowns and no addressing the fact that these things are happening during a pandemic when my computer is so necessary for work. On another note, I have tried to call the store after returning home to exchange my credit card on file and the store transferred me to general customer care, that person said I should not have been transferred and tried calling the store directly back. Over 30 minutes no one answered the phone when he called 2x. He logged a complaint on my behalf and sent me to billing who can't help me and is now trying to call the store again. So another hour of my time is spent on this wormhole, as well as two additional Apple employees when the store is clearly full of many employees who seem to be less than busy when I was there. It used to be that I encouraged all the people I knew to buy Apple. These days I am thinking we should all save our money and wait for Apple to get their shit together. Had a very good experience at the Genius Bar today. Checked in early and was able to be seated without and appointment. I was going in to get my software updated. I recently inherited the black MacBook. I was first seen by Sam who was the concierge who took me right away. After, Wayne sat me down and started asking me what if like to have done today. Went in because I had a problem with my MacBook Air. Only had computer for a short time but they said the logic board went out. $750 dollars later I thought it was kind of fishy when four other people had the same problem but no board was covered. They just send you to a store in Berkley. If that many people have problems with their logic boards, then it is an Apple problem but the general public have to pay the price. A $750.00 price, not including if you want your data backed up...and who doesn't want their data? Sounds like an expensive money maker for computers that have already been purchased. read more

Like any other Apple store, they sell all the basics. I specifically came here for their Genius Bar though because it looks like my hard drive is giving out. They were really helpful. But the help took forever. I arrived at the time of my appointment but because the Genius Bar was so busy, I wasn't helped until 20min later. I think they should get more staff on Genius Bar because even the guy who was helping me felt overwhelmed trying to fix two computers at once. He even apologized for trying to help another customer at the same time as he helped me. The greeter did his job well - said hello and found a sales associate to answer my questions. The sales associate was great...very patient with me and answered all my questions about MacBooks and the iPads. Just wanting to get a iPhone 5c battery replaced should be a seamless, straightforward process, right! Wrong. No replacement batteries are kept in the store. You have to make an appointment with an Apple Care tech to 'check your phone,' after which a battery is ordered. Then you need an appointment to have it installed . The problem is you can never get through to Apple Care. Hold times are beyond 5 minutes... on 3 attempts. Message to Apple Management: This is *NOT* world class support. This is: 1. Answer customer call within 3 minutes, and at least tell customer what expected hold time is. 2. Battery replacement should be offered as a drop-in service to all customers. 3. Was playing music at a party on NYE, someone knocked over my iPod classic 160GB, hard drive started skipping, music's over and the party stopped :( I made an appt for today to see about getting it repaired, fully expecting to have to cough up some serious cheese because Apple repairs are not cheap. (and also expecting pretty terrible service based off of these reviews). I was right on time for my appt and within two or three minutes I was working with a rep. He spent about one minute and diagnosed that, 'yep' my hard drive was skipping and was one step away from a crash. He checked and I was 12 days out of warranty! Any other store would have been thrilled to make me buy a new one, but the rep (didn't ever catch his name and only his employee number is on the receipt) took the opportunity to make one very happy customer and give me a replacement on the house! Let the good karma and the good music continue! Either this store is really hit and miss or there are a lot of picky folks out there. Way to go Apple! I'd been waiting for a good weekend (in stock, in funds, in patience) to replace my slowly dying iPhone 5. But after getting one look at the Sunday-after-Black-Friday afternoon crowd in the store, I almost turned around and left. That said, the longest I had to wait was to talk to the guy who made the reservations. Within a few minutes, I'd been assisted by a very helpful, chatty staff member who traded in my old iPhone 5, set me up with a brand new iPhone 6, and sent me on my way in only about 30 minutes. The ONLY thing I wish he would have told me, especially since he knew I'd just moved to California, was that California charges sales tax on the MSRP, not on the contract price of the phone. It took a long time (and some after-the-fact Googling) to figure out why I'd wound up paying so much sales tax. It might be common knowledge by now to CA residents, but after all the Bay Area sticker shock I've experienced so far, this was still significant enough to notice. And I know it's in the fine print on the agreement I signed, but if they're going to verbally paraphrase the agreement to expedite the process, they should mention that, too. Still, I had a very positive experience and I'm a little surprised at all the negativity on here. And next time, I was informed, I can bring my puppy into the store. :) read more
