They're not on the apps, nobody ever talks about them, and nothing about them seems to stand out above other restaurants that are better known for the different types of food that they make. We actually decided to order here when we were specifically looking for pineapple fried rice and this was just the first place we looked that had it. The first day we tried to order was on a Sunday, when I think they were open. We were trying to time it with our drive so we could pick it up on our way home. We read through the menu and put our orders together, then realized their online ordering was disabled. We tried to call and it went to voicemail. It sucked having to pick another place on the fly and scramble an order together. The following Saturday, we gave them another shot and were able to reach them by phone. The phone order was tough. We wrote down the numbers, but the lady didn't know which items they corresponded to, so we had to go on the website and look them up while placing the order. They also don't have duck as a meat option in their dishes, despite their menu listing it. The food was decent. Definitely not a destination spot, but we don't regret coming here and placing a huge order. Here's what we got. A2. Curry Puff: Four crispy, spongy dumplings. These are a hybrid between mandu style dumplings and pierogies. The outside is spongy and soft like flatbread, but with the structural integrity of a good dumpling/pierogi. It's filled with mashed potatoes laced with curry spices, and the cucumber sauce is sweet with a thick consistency, not unlike duck sauce. You get 4 of them for $6.00, and it's a great appetizer. S5. Bun Bo Xao (Cold Noodle Salad): I love cold noodles, but we weren't wowed by this one. Tons of fresh bean sprouts and cucumbers, but then just a pile of regular thin noodles and not much sauce. Like possibly no sauce. It was like eating a bowl of raw veggies with no dressing. Super fresh feeling, and if they sauced it harder it would have been great. We also paid extra to get it with shrimp, and we wish we had gone with beef instead. It came with tiny, unflavored, untextured, possibly canned shrimp that somehow added nothing to the unflavored pile of veggies and noodles. We ended up fixing it ourselves at home, and it became one of our favorite parts of the meal. It's a well made dish, but it's like the batteries aren't included. R2. Pineapple Fried Rice: Disclaimer - Pineapple in regular food is not my thing. We live in a free country and I try to be tolerant of other people's views on pineapple placement. I did try a few bites to prove I'm not a square, and I absolutely loved the rice. Amazing texture and kind of a smoky taste. For some reason it came with raisins too, which even my girlfriend wasn't crazy about. She says they should nix the raisins and add more pineapple. Even with the pineapples, I would have eaten that whole dish without thinking twice. It had a deep flavor to it I wasn't expecting. I'd absolutely try a regular order fit for human beings. N4. Kao Soi Noodle: I ordered these because the description said crispy noodles. Crispy noodles are one of my favorite things, but I don't think these were ever intended to be crispy. These were fully soggy, very cooked noodles. The red curry was about average, but we asked them to crank up the heat and they obliged. It seems like they used pepper flakes, because the burn was all up front if that makes sense. I love a good Thai stir fry, and have no complaints outside of the hopes I had for crispy noodles. In the grand scheme though, I won't remember this one over any of the others I've had. G4. Massaman Curry: This was our favorite thing next to the fried rice. We loved this. Super creamy, and we felt like we were rolling the dice with the meat. A lot of places give you chewy, leathery take-out style pork or beef, and this wasn't the case here. We ordered this one extra spicy too and it came with a little kick, but nothing crazy. We absolutely loved the rich flavor and very creamy consistency. The white rice was so soft and fluffy, it went amazing with this curry. They have a diverse menu with a lot of different things to pick from, so there's definitely some loose ends. Even so though, we'd go straight for the fried rice and Massaman Curry and branch out if we had room.

We ordered the banh mi with grilled pork, summer rolls with grilled pork and rice vermicilli with egg rolls and grilled pork (wow we ordered more pork than I realized) Overall, I feel that Mr Pho is a good starting point for people who are new to viet food as the flavors are much more mild. I do think it tastes more Chinese-Vietnamese than authentic Vietnamese as the vegetables in the banh mi weren't pickled as they usually are and the grilled pork definitely does have Vietnamese flavors involved but they were more subdued. The summer rolls also had a bit more lettuce than I'm used to and there weren't any leeks in them. That being said, everything still tasted fresh and yummy just not very authentic tasting. My mother got the beef banh mi and loved how crisp the outside of the bun was with a soft interior. The veggies complemented the flavorful beef very well with a slight spicy kick from the jalapeno. I needed to try their thai tea so I got it to go and it came out promptly after ordering. Also delicious. The restaurant itself was clean and inviting, with peaceful instrumental Christian music playing in the background. One of our favorite parts was getting to talk with the owner, Sy, at the end of our meal. We found out that he is also a pastor, and they close the restaurant on Sundays so they can host church services. It's always special to come across a local business where you can see someone's faith being lived out in their everyday life. Highly recommend you check out this gem!

They also answered questions about gluten. We ended up getting aloo tikki chaat and a lamb shank masala. They provided chickpea flour crisps with mint-cilantro and tamarind chutney. They also brought us their complimentary chai tea, which was very nice and satisfying. Their chaat was well-balanced, gluten-free (the crispies are made with chickpea flour), and it had pomengranate, chickpeas, and potatoes. The pile was dressed with yogurt, tamarind chutney, and mint chutney. Their lamb shank masala came bone-in with the curry sauce surrounding it. The lamb was well cooked, and mostly moist and tender, though there were parts that were dry. Both dishes were well-adorned, which was a nice touch. Best of all, however, was how exemplary all the staff were at the restaurant. They exuded a wonderful calmness and hospitality. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Syracuse.
