To speak intelligently about this experience, I need to invoke another time, another place. Despite my desire for it to be otherwise, my mind drifts back to my days in Vietnam. At that time, meals were not something we could take for granted, flavor was not a luxury, and the MRE's were simply a way of keeping ourselves going, a necessary evil in the face of capital E Evil. I don't remember a single meal I ate in those days, and I'm glad for that. Well, this experience was kind of like that. It was a hard day for many reasons - hot and humid amid the barren landscape of any available breakfast in all of Burnsville. Sad, but an understandable result of our times. Imagine it - ordering a breakfast sandwich but no prices for any of the ingredients listed: will this sandwich be 9$ or $20? I can't know until it's time to pay, and by then it's too late (if I want to remain a gentleman). And imagine further - a 20 minute wait in the upstairs so quiet, so empty, that even casual conversation with my comrade echoed off the walls for all to hear. My belly rumbling could even have been confused with flatulence, for which I am apologetic. Picture the sandwich coming, my great relief, and the resulting disappointment to find that not a single piece of bacon awaited me. Bacon that I not only wanted, but needed. Stay with me - I took the sandwich downstairs, hoping for a quick remedy, but alas, it was not to be. Another 20 minutes elapsed, and my compatriot finished his breakfast burrito which near broke his wallet (he does have a decadent streak). I walked downstairs, confused and distraught. The sandwich had been waiting all along, but I was not made aware. I took it upstairs and as a matter of principle, peeled back the bread to see two pale, thin, soggy pieces of bacon, as if they had simply pulled apart a microwave Jimmy Dean microwave breakfast sandwich and applied that wan and insulting offering to my "food." I ate the sandwich, but I didn't enjoy it. I didn't enjoy even a single bite. And yet I knew that there was a whole day to live, and a trying journey to Ingles yet to come. I adjusted my attitude as I made some cursory field notes, which you are now reading, and resolved myself to, in the words of my friend and yours Charlie Kirk, carry the flame even as my digestive fire was dampened and abused. The ground floor is cozy and compact, but they've got a second level that opens things up nicely. I chose the light roast labeled 'Autumn Honduras,' which turned out to be a fabulous pick ‐ bright, smooth, and just what I needed. I added a modest splash of cream, climbed the stairs, and found a quiet spot to settle in. I spent a solid hour up there, sipping slowly and sketching out the next leg of my journey through the mountains. It's a genuinely comfortable space, with enough warmth and quiet to make a full workday feel entirely doable. You could easily lose track of time here, and I wouldn't blame you one bit. The younger gal at the cash was friendly (nicest) but the one making drinks and possibly the manager/owner seemed too bothered. Perhaps it was a busy Monday afternoon but answering our questions seemed a chore or annoyance. Soup of day, none. Glass of water? As she was handing over cups, she then says it's low upstairs. I've eaten here a few times, but in 2026, they have unfortunately become lackluster. recentl, I've gone in a date with my fiance and was incredibly disappointed in both the food and service. I ordered a hot drink and a quiche. it took 45 minutes to get my order on a day they weren't busy. they were short staffed so I let it slide but that I didn't tolerate was the fact my food was WAY too salty and my drink was only 2/3 of the way full. this made me upset but I let it slide considering the following. unfortunately however, i went again by myself on a solo mission and asked for a "suprise me" special. the waiter behind the counter seemed annoyed not even welcoming me or saying good morning and my drink was Burnt drip coffee with way too much syrup. honestly im shocked how downhill this place has become. not to mention the dirty toilets read more

We ran in this morning for 2 coffees. A brewed coffee with cream and a caramel macchiato with an extra shot. The person at the counter was super helpful. However, as we sat on the bench watching our coffees be made the blonde with the ponytail was so busy socializing - talking about Netflix etc... that she overfilled the 16 oz cup with macchiato and then she tried to nonchalantly pour out some of it - so in the end it was about 12 oz. Inside a 16 oz cup. They gave us our drinks and I went to leave to THEN discover she didn't put the cream in. I asked her for cream and she did finally get it - but she just couldn't break away from her socializing to do the job (of getting the right container out of the cooler & pouring it into the cup.) it took 2 tries to get it right. I wouldn't have been annoyed had she been chatting with customers. That I can understand. But it was the baristas just chatting away at the expense of the quality of their work. The coffee itself is good. And we are local so we have been here a lot. Usually we have a better experience. read more

We happened across this place right after we found out our destination was temporarily closed. We had driven by there many times and the were always plenty of people sitting outside. We went inside to order. The main menu on the wall was hard to read because the spotlights reflected off the menu. After we ordered we sat at the inside 4-top on the ground floor. Our server was pleasant and helpful. Our food took a fairly long time to arrive, but once we received our salads and BLTs, they were delicious. Everything was going okay until it was time to cash out. There were five teenage employees, three of whom were watching something on an iPad, and the other two were on their cellphones. It took forever for one of them to help us so we could leave. The experience was good enough that we will go back, but if the service doesn't improve we will have to cross this one off our list. read more

This place was an unexpected home run! I have been to Burnsville to visit family many times but this was my first trip to this establishment. The staff is very friendly and accommodated all of our obnoxious requests while ordering!!! We decided to sit upstairs which was spacious. The windows were open which was nice since it was a gorgeous day and I think it helped with the sound. The room gets very loud when full, and it helped to have the windows open! I ordered a Sweet Tea and a Chef Salad. I swapped the ham and turkey out for Braised Chicken and enjoyed honey mustard with it. The food is super fresh and the place was VERY clean: the staff continued to take care of us as we enjoyed our meal and were happy to get anything we needed during our visit. The only issue was the length of time it took to get food. It was close to 45mins for 3 salads, but they were so good that it was worth the wait!! If you have the chance to stop by, make it happen. So these people. Gosh. They spoke to my 6yr old daughter like an adult. Called her by name. Ensured the hot chocolate for her was cool enough. And made sure my coffee was perfect. The desserts in the window will make your eyes and mouth water. We literally took one of each to sample- too good. The wait times can get crazy but we don't mind. Mom & I came in for something cool to drink, maybe a sweet nibble... While we were deciding, the barista was complaining to the customer in front of us about how much she hated her job and how miserable every single order was making her. We both decided on the orange-ade, as it's a childhood favorite of Mom's. The original soda fountain that made them is long gone, but it's still a fairly popular thing in this area. Other places offer it, too. More complaining from the barista. At this point, we decided the drinks were going to be enough, neither of us wanted to stay & eat anything after listening to the ever growing recital of how many ways everything & everyone sucked. Those were, without a doubt, the worst orange-ades ever made. For those of you wondering, an orange-ade is basically 3 ingredients; water, fresh squeezed orange juice & simple syrup. Some places add additional flavorings, like a splash of vanilla, but it's pretty much just the 3 ingredients. It's pretty hard to get wrong. The couple behind us also had an orange-ade in their order. More complaining from the barista. This shop has changed hands fairly recently, but I have to say, when Angie & Calvin were operating Appalachian Java, there were NEVER any issues with rude staff & they would have immediately fixed any problems with food or drink. We will not be back. As much as I would like to support a local business, we will stick with the local Starbucks franchise instead. I got a sandwich for lunch and stayed long enough to get some coffee (Egyptian) later and a donut, also delicious. We took this to go and for some reason the orzo salad tasted flavourless. Cinnamon roll ($3) - 1.5 stars The cream cheese icing was good but it was downhill from there. It was dry on the inside and the texture was more like a dry scone. Orange blossom cake ($5) - 2 stars It tasted like an orange pound cake with no blossom flavor and was too sweet and gummy. It came with a marmalade sugar frosting that was alright but the orange chocolate curls tasted artificial. Would not order this again. First of all, I would like to say that it has been a very long time since I've had a good cappuccino, and Appalachian absolutely nailed it. I love this place! My first visit was on my birthday and I got the blueberry french toast bake. Wow, I can never do regular French toast again. It was light, fluffy bread with a blueberry cream cheese (I think) mixture in between. Topped with powdered sugar and syrup equals delish! They also gifted me a cookie for my birthday which I was super pumped about because I was eyeing the butterscotch toffee shortbread. It did not disappoint! The cookie melts in your mouth! My second visit was this past Saturday and it was super busy. The staff here is great, they are personable, attentive, and I'm thankful for their COVID safety and protocol! Because I was having sweet dreams about that shortbread cookie, I had to get another one! I also got the Oreo cupcake which is probably the moistest cupcake I've ever had. I cut into it on Monday (I know, why would I wait so long?!) and it was flavorful, moist, and the icing was heavenly. I don't really like to eat a whole cupcake because I'm a frosting gal, but this was a game changer for me. AND... I ate the other half tonight, where I was even more impressed that it wasn't dry, still the freshest quality and I had purchased on Saturday! I can't wait to keep trying out the menu here!
