Last Sunday afternoon we were driving from the Knoxville, TN area and heading toward Asheville, NC. We decided to take the road less traveled and got off I-40 east at about Wilsonville, TN. This took us down Route 25 and through more remote areas. This enabled us to see some smaller communities and was much more scenic. We did some quick searching when we had reception and decided to check out the town of Marshall, NC and to get something to eat while there. We set our sights on Zadie's Market which is located in the heart of Marshall. Route 25 takes travelers through historic downtown and along the French Broad River. As we followed main street into town we were both amazed and we felt an instant love for the small town. We found street parking easily and walked across the street to Zadie's. We learned Zadie's Market is located inside what used to be the original jail for the town of Marshall. The owners have done a beautiful job renovating the entire building while respecting historical elements. The walls are decorated with relics from the sheriff's office and jail along with historic pictures of Marshall. We were greeted by Donna Ray who was very warm and welcoming. She asked us if we had been in before and when we told her we had not, she was quick to share with us the history of her community. It was fun to talk to her and also get her recommendations on the menu. My wife chose the Zadie Bird sandwich with beet salad (at Donna Ray's suggestion) and we ordered a basket of fries to share. I chose the Smash Burger with mac n cheese. They do offer beer on tap as well as 4 or 6 packs to go. They also have a selection of wine. We continued to wander the building while our food was being prepared. They have an outdoor patio, partially covered which overlooks the French Broad River. The perimeter of the patio area is lined with old radiator heaters. We also learned that upstairs there is a hotel which is also owned by the same folks. We checked out the brochures and website as well and thought it would be a great way to spend the weekend. Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked delicious. We dug into our sandwiches and fries first. The mac n cheese was piping hot and also delicious. My wife really enjoyed the beet salad and is inspired to recreate it this weekend at home. Not only do we recommend Zadie's, the entire community of Marshall is something out of a book. Historic, quaint, simple, and charming. Highly, highly recommend.

Zadies is back open and ready for your support! Food is always delicious and beer is the bomb. Staff is lovely. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. Live music on some nights. It's so nice sitting outside with the music or river rushing by. The chicken sandwich was massive and paired nicely with a watermelon lime poppi. Will be back shortly!

What a fantastic find in a renovated jailhouse with outdoor and indoor seating and board games to keep you occupied. You walk in and order at the counter and the food is brought out almost immediately. Service was friendly and patient. All four in our party ordered a Smash Burger to their own liking and everything was correctly brought out. The bread for the burger was soft, the meat tasted delicious, and everything was on point. Would recommend this small town hole in the wall to anyone passing through Marshall!

Pecan warning! Delicious root beer

Stopped here for a beverage after a stroll downtown and walk across the bridge to visit the park on the other side. Unique, historic and thoughtful use of a building that previous was the old Madison County jail. Our server mentioned her brother did some time there on weekends for a social faux pas. We were only interested in hydration and grab a couple craft sodas. Other customers were having meals indoors and outside next to the river. Hotel guests could be seen relaxing above us on the patio roof. Indoors, some walls have historic jail documents which are a fun read. I had a delicious root beer soda brewed in Georgia. As I was perusing the can, I noticed a pecan warning. We are looking forward to returning to town and trying some of their menu items.

Lovely to sit outside by the river and enjoy a really wonderful meal. Our entrees - shrimp and pimento cheese grits and chicken and waffles - were both perfectly prepared and delicious. The counter service with orders brought to the table was efficient. And the rose lemonade was really special!

Visiting friends who live in Marshall and decided to head to Zadie's Market for dinner on a Friday evening. Ordered our food and drinks at the bar of this old jailhouse basement that has hotel rooms upstairs. Someone in our party was unsure of what they wanted to drink, so they let him try some of their offerings. I went straight to the IPA on tap. Went outside and got a table overlooking the French Broad river. It was a perfect evening weather wise. I got the Smash burger and recommend it. For my side, I got the pimento grits that were sticky to my stomach. Both were great!

Hillbilly Market - Simple Banana Chips without all the inflammatory ingredients that I can't have.

Maybe I…read moreshould look up synonyms for nostalgia, because everything Hot Springs was nostalgic for both my partner and I. Hillbilly Market was very nostalgic for us both. They seem to have just about everything you could possibly want or need, just without 5-20 options of brands. Simple. Sweet treats sprinkled throughout and even offerings from local farmers and artists. I have a lot of food allergies and sensitivities that make eating a lot of my favorites really hard. Banana chips is one of them. I haven't had them or much dried fruit in several years because sunflower seed oil seems to be used in the process so often with commercial dried foods. If I do find them, they're typically expensive and then taste like crap. So when I came across this expansive display of all these bags of dried fruits and veggies, Banana chips were the first to catch my eye. I startled a few people with my squeal of excitement as I began snatching up bag after bag of dried fruits and veggie chips. Everything I bought was made with a few simple ingredients. No seed oils or dyes, very reasonably priced and everything I bought is very tasty. I'm certain that this place is a treasure trove for people passing through on the Appalachian Trail. I promise that I practiced some self control and left plenty of dried fruits and treats for them as well. That fridge in the back corner of my photo? Full of meat from what we assumed came from a local butcher. It all looked really good and made us regret not cooking dinner at our cabin at least one night. Though we didn't regret any of the good food we had at local diners. Next time though, for sure. Like most places in Hot Springs, they close a lot earlier than we had expected. I think it was around 6:00 when they closed. We were unsure if this was just the usual or due to the community still healing and rebuilding from the hurricanes. So don't make the mistake we made and think you'll just stop in on your way back from a day of adventure and pick up groceries for dinner.

After a fabulous afternoon birthday tea with friends, I popped into Publix Waynesville. The lines were long, so I opted for self-checkout. Packing bags , I was admittedly slow and deliberate as I am not good at "bagging". I also looked to note that items were being rung up properly (ex. BOGO) so it probably took me about 5 minutes to ring up a full trolley of goods and pack them. As I was placing the receipt into my purse and preparing to vacate the spot, an employee came up and loudly announced that she "did not see me ring up my paper towels" and demanded the receipt. This is something that she HAS THE TECHNOLOGY to check without uttering a word to me. It was an obvious attempt at public humiliation (why?). Several people put their head on a swivel to see the drama of someone loudly being accused of shoplifting paper towels. I wanted to crawl under the register and die, but I could only manage to hand her the receipt and put my head down. After the employee saw her obvious mistake, she only said "okay, thank you" and handed me the receipt back. I asked the monitor standing nearby "why" she did that, to which she gave no reasonable explanation. I barely made it to my vehicle before I broke out in tears and phoned my husband, who instructed me to return all the groceries immediately. I will give credit where credit is due and say that both CSR Savannah and the store manager on duty were very sympathetic and understood how, in this very small town, this would be utterly humiliating. They apologised profusely and the manager even offered to walk me and my groceries (that I didn't return) back to my vehicle. Regardless, the embarrassement of being falsely accused in such a way as to shame me publicly - when I did absolutely nothing wrong, has forever ruined shopping at the Waynesville Publix. Thankfully, I still have all the Sarasota Publix locations.

Prices were clearly marked, and everything felt tidy and easy to navigate. Honestly, it's hard to find anything to complain about here. Most of my visit was prompted by a quick stop at the men's room, which was clean and easy to locate. Once that business was taken care of, I wandered through the chips aisle to grab a bag of pork rinds ‐ then made my way to the produce section for two ripe tomatoes ‐ perfect for the sandwiches I had in mind. The self-checkout was smooth and intuitive, making it super easy to ring everything up and head out without delay. I've come to expect consistently positive experiences at Ingles, and this visit was no exception. It's another example of why I keep coming back. Clean facilities, clear pricing, and a hassle-free checkout ‐ simple things done right. [Review 1230 of 2025 - 4415 in North Carolina - 24782 overall]
