During the 45-minute "safety" session, the owner filled the time sharing her life story (about immigrating to the USA through marriage because she was so beautiful that her future husband proposed within a week, brought her to America, and yada yada yada). Self-serving. Conceited. Self-entitled. Red flag #1. Later, the owner said she was judging my family to see if she'll let us on the ride... and that she only lets folks on if she believes they'll leave a 5-star review on google for her business. Red flag #2. The owner bragged about how she purchases brand new ATVs every year. But, when we arrived at the trail-head, we were met with 4 ATVs in questionable condition (broken taillight on one of them, high miles on three of them, balding tires on a couple of them). Maintenance did not match the description or the price for the ride. Red flag #3. We brushed it off and hoped for a great ride--which never came. The first hour of the ride was limited to 5-8mph. Why? It was flat as a pancake with zero scenery. Boring. We took a 20 minute break for pictures but our tour guide never offered to take our family photo. (Why did we tip him $100 at the end of our ride is beyond me... worst service ever for an ATV operator). At one point, I pulled our tour guide over to share with him my family has a lot of experience riding ATVs in the US and abroad and that we'd like to go faster and ride on some hills, etc. The last 10 minutes of our ride was up and down 1 hill. I think we might have gone 15mph as a top speed. My family was so disappointed; they couldn't believe how lousy the experience was. Big time-waster on our visit to the area. read more

You have a lot of ATV choices in this area; avoid working with this business. You start the day an hour ahead of your scheduled time for what was pitched as a safety talk and tutorial. I've ridden ATVs for over 20 years in the US and in other countries; this is the first time I had such a long talk scheduled. The talk was the owner telling her life story, how she came to America from a war-torn central American country on an education visa, married an American, and now believes "I can't be racist" as she spouts racist things. She is the definition of an immigrant who wants to close the door to others like her. The funny thing is, I don't give a sh-- about a person's politics. I'm there to have fun! To ride an ATV in the wild! But she forced us to listen to this stuff while we politely had to sit there and smile. "I'm not a racist, but I think they're using that housing behind the Walmart to house illegals." What does that have to do with riding an ATV? She spent more than 5 minutes talking about all the damage fees we'd be responsible for if the ATV got damaged. Okay, we get it -- don't damage your property. She spent another 5 minutes talking about her other outdoor businesses. Finally, 40 minutes later, she's wrapping things up. She's done talking about how they're eating the cats and dogs in Ohio (I'm not kidding and she was dead serious about believing that fable), and we drive 10 minutes to the actual ATV starting area. For an ATV company, they do not provide bathrooms. Anywhere. So even if you just drove an hour to get to this place, there is no place to relieve yourself. I've never been to an ATV place that didn't have a bathroom. Very weird (and cheap). Our guides were nice and more professional than the owner. They showed us how to safely operate the ATVs and warned us against the usual behaviors they want to see and don't want to see. Some of the ATVs had tires that were nearly bald. I guess all the fees aren't going into ATV maintenance? Our group started off into the forest. So many of the first trails seemed to be newer and still had saplings and other underbrush we were riding through. The trails themselves seemed... unfinished? Anyways, it was slow going through this part, 5-10 mph. You ride in a train formation, with one of the guides up front leading the way and another at the back. You go where they go, at the speed they go. We break out of the forest area and go up and down some hills and some small fields. A lot of the trails are dead-ends and there's a fair amount of going back and forth over the same trail (sometimes going in the opposite direction). You're kind of on the side of a mountain, but it's mostly forested and not much to see (trees!). I guess that was fine, but like I said, you're going pretty slow so there's just a lot of forest to view. At some point, you get to trails that are much better maintained. As long as it's not a hill trail that's partially washed out, some of these trails are very nice and you're finally able to get some speed and enjoyment out of the ATV. 10-20 mph here. At roughly the half-way point of our 2 hour tour, you reach an abandoned house. Our guides needed to check out a trail's condition to see if we could go on it, and left us alone here for about 10 minutes. We took some photos of the really great view while swatting away hundreds of no seeums. They took our group photo when they returned, we mounted our ATVs and we were off again. One of the trails had a downed tree across it. We moved it for the guides. Later on while riding another trail, I noticed that rather than cut up a tree that was blocking it, they had just created another trail around the tree (it was not large and a chainsaw and 15 minutes is all it would've taken to remove the fallen tree). Some really good, wide trails here, and one or two opportunities to enjoy some speed on the ATV. A good ATV ride is always a mix of trails and speed, and it takes some careful thought to make for a real good experience. I'd say on the trail riding alone, this ATV experience is like 2.5 or 3 stars. I've had much better experiences. The icing on the cake was the end. We left our guides a healthy tip and one of the guides (the owner's daughter) was talking to the owner. She asked to speak to one of us on the phone. The guy closest to the phone took it and sat there listening while he was berated by the owner for leaving too little of a tip. Imagine the weird sense of entitlement it takes to demand a certain level of tipping -- and how little she must be paying her own guides! While "tipping is expected," what is never expected is you specifying the percentage of a tip. Someone who does that clearly doesn't understand how to run a business in the USA. That left us with a bad taste in our mouths, as none of us ever had an owner demand a bigger tip for a service they provided. And trust me when I say this place isn't cheap and the owner drives a Range Rover. Disappointing. read more

I normally don't leave reviews... but Patricia made a point of soliciting reviews, so here we go: First the good: The highlight of this "adventure" was the beauty of the trails in peak fall glory. We couldn't have timed the weather and changing leaves better. The trails were fun and we loved experiencing fall as we are from the desert. Unfortunately, we didn't realize that the "adventure" was going to be dealing with Patricia and the contract signing process. Our check-in and safety briefing turned into a 1-hour lecture on her Christian faith, horrible people that dared to copy their business and use the name "Appalachian", and multiple experiences of other guests that did not follow their rules and how they dealt with them. We get it... we have all signed contracts before. We are responsible. Let's sign the contract and move on... I was ready to walk away half way through this briefing... Debbie Downer for sure. Not the way to hype a group that just paid $1400 for a morning of fun. It wasn't a safety briefing... it was a negative soapbox of all the disservice ever done to her or her company. My group of 6 adults visit national parks every year to hike and adventure... via ferratas, rapelling, sky diving, off-roading, etc. We were excited to get out and have a great day, but this initial meeting (where she made us leave our phones in the car and not have them in the room when she spoke), set a very negative tone. I went through a 20-minute contract signing process over the phone and was shocked we had another 1-hour process at their office, and then were asked to sign another waiver at the actual drive site!!! More time was spent on the contract than on anything else! Funny thing is, they didn't even have enough small helmets for our group. I had to wear a thick beanie under mine to make it "fit"... They didn't care about safety - they only cared about their own liability. I specifically asked when I booked over the phone if this was going to be a thrilling adventure or a "driving miss daisy" follow the leader... I was told it was just our group of 6 and the guide would be able to modify it to our ability and interests. When we showed up, there was another couple put into our group. The lady had never ridden an ATV before. Our "tour" was going 7-9 MPH with the guide turning backwards the entire time watching to make sure she was keeping up. She had a coffee mug in one hand the entire ride! At one point I questioned and asked if the entire 2 hours was going to be like this and they suggested that if I wasn't happy, they can take me back to my car. (No refunds though)... my group made the most of the experience but it was not at all what we hoped or expected for the amount of money we paid. If it wasn't such a beautiful fall day, it would have been a total bust. I would highly recommend using anyone other than Appalachian Adventures. read more

Find anything else to do when you are in Luray than go here. Show up and get talked to in a hot room for 45 minutes to an hour about safety and absolute nonsense. Then drive 20 minutes to the trails just for the guides to be 30 mins late and completely unprepared, the trails weren't clear and we had to stop 6 or 7 times to find a way to get around downed trees, and you will not exceed 10mph on the 4 wheeler at all. It feels like you are just aimlessly riding through the woods. If you have literally any experience on a 4 wheeler or being somewhere not inside find ANYTHING else to do. Then neither of the tour guides wore helmets and you get constantly hounded about safety, we left a way more than deserved tip and the guide pulled the money out of the envelope and started counting it in our face before complaining it wasn't enough. Absolutely horrificly run business that I wouldn't reccomend to a single person visiting the beautiful part of our state. read more

My hubby brought me and my best friend here for my birthday this past weekend! Omg it was one of the best things we did. We were so afraid to go and spend the money because we saw the bad reviews. This was way better than what I was expecting. My wife enjoyed her birthday with a two hour surprise guided ATV tour. Our tour guide was fantastic. I will be requesting Brad for our next trip (which we are already planning). The trails and views are breathtaking. They have specially made trails on private property that really highlight what the ATVs are capable of. We did the two hour guided tour and felt it was worth every penny. When we initially met the staff they made us aware of the safety procedures they put in place, which made me feel very comfortable. They take safety and protocol very seriously (as they should). You charged it immediately over the phone while still misrepresenting your expectations. I also brought cash for the second hour when I was under the impression it was optional. I certainly wouldn't have had a problem with that as indicated by my initial agreement to take the two hour with another group. Appalachian Adventures is top notch. I had none of the issues that the other reviewers noted below. Patricia couldn't be nicer - and their company is meant to introduce folks to the great outdoors. I rented 2 ATVs for 2 hours for myself and my 16 year old son. Our ATV guide was Larry and he was great. Very safe and very fun. My son had never been on an ATV machine before and Larry did a great job getting him comfortable. These are 300 cc machines - very powerful and fun. I recommend the 2 hour tour. The first hour is meant to introduce you to the machine and for your guide to be sure you can handle it in the back country. The second hour was much more fun, big hills up and down, very rocky and muddy... the whole adventure was great! I will be back next year when my other son turns 16. read more

When i finally got ahold of them, i asked to confirm the location to meet and complete the paperwork. She refused to give me the address and insisted on giving me very unclear directions since SHE SAID SHE DID NOT KNOW HER ADDRESS. As the manager of a business, you'd think they would know their address. We arrived at the tour on time and no one was there. We called to let her know we were there and she said she was "running an errand". We told her that because the weather was not cooperating, we were not comfortable with moving forward with the tour as we didnt feel safe doing so. I am a senior citizen who, with my family, booked 5 atv's with the understanding that it would be an easy ride for me. We had to do some practice runs before taking the atv's on the road. It was one of the most jarring experiences of my life. The road was treacherous and my family agreed it would have been disastrous for me to continue. If the woman who owned this company would have been honest and not only interested in obtaining money at all cost, she would have explained that it would be dangerous for me. Booked a 2 hour ATV tour for 4 people. It was the most boring and expensive ATV riding experience I have ever had! Even though the website says that the guide would adjust the level as needed, our guide Brad, kept the pace very slow and we were forced to go 5-7mph the entire time. Even after the first hour of sloooooow scenic driving over rocks, Brad still never allowed more during the tour. He had a very rude and condescending attitude overall and was not open to discussing anything or making any adjustments for my group. The AD on the website is false. Guides DO NOT work with you. THEY DO NOT ADJUST THE CHALLENGE LEVEL ON THE GROUP TOUR. This is only a slow scenic tour for tourists who don't know any better. It is NOT a true ATV experience. We wanted something active to do on our wedding anniversary so we decided that riding an ATV would be a good way to be active, outdoors and educational / enjoyable. We looked online for a good safe place in Northern Virginia to rent ATV's and found Appalachian Adventures. Doing it last minute we thought it would impossible but we called and got the wonderful co-owner of the business, Patricia. Patricia and Tom own AA and Patricia is not anything if not completely customer focused and extremely helpful. She explained how it all worked and we we surprised to learn just how many activities they actually offer! Canoeing, shooting, horseback riding, ATV and cabins to name a few. They are a family owned business and a class act. You can immediately tell how closely involved the owners are because everything is spic and span. Very clean operation. The ATVs were new, well maintained and safety was paramount from the first call to the signing in to the tour guide. The signing in process was east and directions to the site well documented. The guide himself - Brandon - was extremely attentive, keeping a close eye on us so we felt safe and comfortable. The trail was great fun with a lot of variety and although several members of our family were unfamiliar with ATVs, we all caught on and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. It can be a bit difficult to get a hold of these folks but in the end, it was all worth it. For a friends birthday we booked 2hr ATV rentals for a party of 6 and had an absolute blast. Exercise some patients and you'll realize this place has a lot to offer. I do recommend booking the 2hr ATV session ($90/hr). Even as our time was winding down, everyone in our group wanted to do more. There are a ton of cool things to do from canoeing, horseback riding, jet skiing, and more. read more

We had a great time ATVing with Appalachian Adventures. The phones aren't manned all the time but I left a message in the afternoon and got a call back 5:30-6pm. From that point it was a breeze. Patricia gave us a slot, took the deposit and immediately sent the info needed for the day by email. After checking in, getting the safety talk and driving down the road to the trail, we had a few practice laps, and got riding. My dad and I went there for a couple of days of good fun. We rented ATVs and a cabin from Appalachian Adventures. The ATV trip was great. The guide assessed our abilities and modified the trip to suit our desires along with making sure we wouldn't kill ourselves. He took us through a bunch of rocky areas, deep water, and steep hills. The ATVs were a little worn, but met our needs perfectly - though my dad's muffler did fall off. The cabin was a beautiful little one bedroom with a pullout sofa out in the middle of nowhere. When I say in the middle of nowhere, it was 8-10 miles of gravel road to get there and my GPS only told me that the roads were never evaluated. The place was clean, had cold AC, and met all of our needs. The biggest complaint is that there were no linens nor any towels and we weren't told ahead of time. I would definitely go again. Had a great time. Next time, I'll bring towels. read more

This place had horrible customer service. The owner, Patricia, told us to be at the location by 1 pm but she did not show up until about 30 mins after us. She was very rude towards our party and pushed back our original time to an hour later. She mentioned that she always tells her customers to come an hour early, but never mentioned it to us via email disregarding are other itineraries. While doing our paper work, we asked for Lysol or hand sanitizer and she said "No I do not have any, why would I?I would have thought you guys would be safe but let me put my mask on just in case." Her comment was very unnecessary and unprofessional. Most public locations supply those basic needs, especially during this time The ride to the top of the mountain with Tim was amazing but because of Patrica service, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd like to start off by saying DO NOT give these people your time of day. Patricia, the owner, is very irritating over the phone and in person. She doesn't give her costumers the respect they deserve and also tries to scam you. When you arrive she hardly greets you and then gives a terrible speech, going off topic and talking about herself personally which is very unprofessional. She cannot count and proceeds to get the numbers wrong over and over and then after all of that she gives us false directions to get to the actual trail. Very irritating all around. The actual ride itself was nice and the instructor made us feel very welcomed. The only complaint I do have about the actual trip is one person did tip the atv by accident. The atv had absolutely no damage and in fact it fell slowly and controlled. They could have easily inspected it there for damage and then continued on but instead they are charging the rider hundreds of dollars and for what?! Patricia claims they have "experts" come inspect the vehicle as it fell in her speech but that part of her speech seemed very sketchy in my opinion. I don't think that they actually send an expert to inspect it but they just scam you for hundreds. The most outrageous part is that these machines are made for this and she even said that in the speech. Please if u have taken anything from this it's to not look any further into what this companies trying to fool you into. read more

From the positive reviews, it appears that she can sometimes be pleasant, so its a real Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde situation. Unfortunately, I encountered the nasty Patricia and was as shocked as the other reviewers by the treatment I experienced. It is extremely unusual to have so many negative reviews of an owner of a business -- do you really want to risk going here, handing over your hard earned money, only to maybe be treated with disrespect and contempt to the point where your day is ruined? 3.5 stars I've rounded up to 4 for the ATV expedition. Patricia and our guide Larry couldn't be any nicer; however, it was extremely difficult to schedule a reservation and the directions weren't great. The map we received via email was very small and isn't oriented with North at the top. There was no compass on the map either to orient you. Scheduling was a big pain. When you call, you will most likely get the voicemail which will inform you that their hours are 9 until 11, and they take a break from 11 to 1 (or something like that). I definitely called many times during their hours, and I often got a busy signal (seems they don't have call waiting) or I couldn't get ahold of the place. One day after a bunch of very frustrating attempts, I was able to reach her at around 1:15 or something. Patricia said "I wish you called me 5 minutes before; I'm on my way out." I told her I tried probably half a dozen times that morning. She told me that she'll call me back when she is back from lunch; she called back at 4:45pm! Nice hours. We did an ATV ride and it was a blast; however, we went extremely slowly. I saw on my ATV that we were never faster than 8mph. And weirdly, standing on the ATV was prohibited! (I'm still scratching my head on that; if anyone has an explanation as to why a place would prohibit this let me know. When I was taught how to use an ATV, I was told this is an easy way to keep your balance, and it is!) Anyway, it was still fun. I'm glad I did it, but I probably won't go back. read more

The average Yelp review today is 2.5 stars which I think is pretty accurate. First, the location of our cabin house was amazing. It was secluded and beautiful. The owner was kind and patient in person which was refreshing since it was a gamble to catch her on a good day before then. They focus more on taking your photos to post on their Facebook page to "make them lots of money" ((literally, they said that)) and focus less on making sure your needs as a customer are met. They only have larger sized ATV helmets available and if you're not comfortable with that level of safety equipment, too bad there is no refund. The party boat is nothing like what is on their website so make sure to get details if that's what you're expecting. They also don't really understand privacy. I was with a group of girls for the weekend and we later found out that the owner made it a point to tell the group of men staying at another cabin that we were there. I'm sorry, but telling a group of men that there are young girls staying at the cabin up the hill from them does not make me feel very safe. Despite these things we had a really great time..I just wish we had done a little more research before booking. read more

This is by far the WORST place I have been to in my entire life, upon arriving we had to wait for PATRICIA who was home resting, when she came she greeted us but was very rude and disrespectful and did show that she had ANY interest in pleasing her customers, while reading the paper work to us she was DISGUSTING made me want to walk out as I would if it wasn't for my mother. She didn't guide us to the trail But gave us some dumb directions on how to get there... the tour guide was AWSOME but Patricia will make you're experience hell I wouldn't recommend this business to anyone.. quite frankly they should be shut down. read more

They are the only ATV daily rental place in the area. We searched and couldn't find anyone else so we decided to give Appalachian Adventures a chance. We had a great time using the ATV's and Logan (our guide was great) however, making the reservations was difficult. Most times I called I had to leave a voice mail and hope someone would call back. When I finally did get around to making the reservation, the owner was a little snappy with me. I was told that all adults had to ride their own vehicle but the 15 year old had to be in a side by side and were not able to drive their own. I understand the law would prevent the teenagers from driving their own, but my MIL, in her 80's, would need to driver her own. I was told I had to pay half up from and the rest when we got there for a 2 hour reservation. Now, this is when it gets bad. We get to the office and are greeted by the owner, who gave us a 45 minute dissertation on safety procedures that should have taken 10 minutes max. She threw in her religious preferences, her feeling on gun control, her feelings on trans gender, how she has had other companies steal her company name and so on. Once we drove to the trail, on the unpaved, rocky road, my MIL tried to use the ATV and was uncomfortable. She decided not to proceed and left with her niece. We asked for our money back and was told no. It is stated in the contract, no exceptions. The owner could have bent the rules a little but said the lawyers and accountants would not allow it. We are out 400.00 and she will not budge. All in all, it was not worth the trouble and I would never book with them again. read more

this experience couldn't of been more amazing. from the wonderful woman, patricia, running things in the office, to our amazing atv tour guide todd, my mother, sister and myself had a phenomenal time on the trails and couldn't of asked for a better tour. i would definitely recommend and will hopefully be back very soon. and not only was the service amazing, but so were the views! read more

I have been trying to call this place for weeks now. I have called at least once everyday and just get their voicemail. I have left 3 messages. They called me back once and left a message. I tried to call back and nothing!!! I FINALLY got in contact with someone this morning and was greeted with a VERY RUDE man who seemed irritated that I was calling to inquire about their ATV rentals and cabin rentals. The conversation was all about 3 minutes because he HUNG up on me! When inquiring about their cabin prices he informed me that it was a 3 night minimum. When I said "AW we were planning two nights, he said WELL THEN TRY SOMEWHERE ELSE"....then hung up the phone. I can NOT believe the rudeness that occurred for no reason! NEVER will I spend a dime here and I will make sure all my friends and family are aware of this horrible service! read more

We had 2 hour ATV tour today. The desk team were very accommodating working with us when a family member wasn't able to make the tour due to injury before getting there. The tour itself was a blast, we got to crawl all over the mountain every which way! Tia was an excellent guide and a lot of fun to hang around! We'll be back!! read more
