great service & amazing pizza , 100% recommendations towards garlic knots & the grandma slices

I'm not sure what is more disappointing, the ridiculous $10 credit card minimum or how terrible the pizza is. We have been working in front of this location for the last 10 hours, at least 8 of us have eaten in here throughout the day but that isn't good enough, okay. I order 3 slices, deep dish, grandma, regular....$8.50. I hand over my credit card, sorry $10 minimum, grab a soda or something to hit $10. No, I'll take a pin wheel, well that's $3.50, okay add it. $12 swipe, a little disheartening but I can give it a shot. I don't want to use the word "inedible" because I definitely ate it, but I forced myself through the painful experience of consuming this pizza. I've had ehhhh that was alright pizza, this was beyond that. The cheese was rubbery on all 3 slices, it resembled eating a cold mozzarella stick or a string cheese. These slices were heated up, I watched it, to the point where the regular slice was burned around the edges. Now to the pinwheel, inedible is a great word because it had to be thrown out, it was so chewy and stale that I simply couldn't eat it. STAY AWAY! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Terrible experience, terrible food, and IN MY OPINION, a terrible customer service interaction. Needless to say, we ordered delivery from a place a few blocks away since we'll be here well into the night still working. read more

The family that runs this business is so sweet and they've worked so hard through the pandemic without sacrificing their quality or service. They're breads/crusts are perfection and they have a great marinara sauce. Do yourself a favor and try out one of the original neighborhood pizza shops. read more

We ordered delivery of a regular pie, fries and garlic knots. What a disappointment!!!! The pie had ZERO flavor. Packed everything unfortunately. The fries smelled like old oil plus some of the fries were very brown and others not so much. Not pleasant at all. The garlic knots were mushy and flavorless. We read 5 star reviews for the place and thought that it was definitely worth trying, man were we wrong!!! I'm sorry but I do not recommend it. I CANNOT believe this service. I literally downloaded this app the warn people. I ordered lobster bisque, baked clams and two veggie soups. The veggie soups were all over the bag and spilled. The baked clams I would not wish on my worst enemy- they look, smell and taste awful- not a breadcrumb in sight. The icing on the cake was the lobster bisque- not ONE piece of lobster. When I called the restaurant to inquire about a possible mistake I was told that their lobster bisque doesn't actually have lobster in it...! I then asked to speak to a manager and the phone was given to three different people- all of them never actually addressed themselves as a manager. I work in the restaurant industry and every part of this order was done poorly, irresponsibly and unreliably. I don't wish this kind of service on my worst enemy. Absolutely HORRIBLE. read more

This pizza tastes like it was made on a cardboard crust. Crust is normally my favorite part of a pizza, but here I find myself scraping off the toppings and cheese to salvage at least some part of this messy pie. And the pasta dishes aren't much better to boot - nothing to write home about, and the sauce tastes bland. I've never eaten inside the place, but I do live across the street, so when I've grudingly gone in there on occasion to pick up my food, the staff has been very kind and gracious. One star for that. Oh, and I'm entirely convinced that this whole operation (along with the coffee shop next door) is some sort of mafia cover-up that involves intense-looking men sitting outside of these establishments at all hours of the day and night, discussing God knows what. Nothing out of this world but definitely better than quite a few of the Astoria pizza places and well priced too. I ordered a large margarita from here which came well seasoned/baked and was piping hot-- their sizes are pretty big too. It was an overall good slice and I prob killed the whole thing within a day and a half. I also got some sides- mozzarella sticks and garlic knots which were exactly as I was hoping they'd be. Super fast delivery and brought to our door by the owner himself. No complaints (rare!). Will definitely order from here again. read more

It looks like a pizza place from the outside but, while their pizza is delicious, it's the sit in dining and attention to detail that makes this trattoria stand out. The pasta is amongst the best I've had outside of home cooking, and the chops and chicken is done to perfection. But the most impressive part of this restaurant is the service. You are not rushed, but never have to wait too long, and are treated like family from the second you walk in to your exit. Although we still can't figure out how to pronounce Apicius, this small Italian restaurant never fails to satisfy. The pizza is divine and the pasta dishes are fresh, authentic, and plentiful. It tastes like everything is chopped and cooked to order- no premade sauces warming on the back burner here. The waitstaff is attentive without being overbearing. In true Italian fashion, they let you dine at your leisure. They didn't bring us the check until we asked for it, even though they were already mopping the floors and closing up for the night. If you're looking for a romantic, table-clothed restaurant, this is not the place you want, but if you want delicious food at affordable prices then you should give Apicius a try. read more

I've had numerous slices from Apicius from their plain slice to their chicken and broccoli and buffalo chicken slices and they are all just okay. The slices are pretty big and filling and they are always generous with the toppings but I've never bitten into a slice and felt any special kind of way about it. the prices aren't bad and there actually isn't much in the area so you can't go wrong ordering from here. Anytime I get something with chicken here I find it just tastes weird. Whether it's on my pizza or a chicken sandwich it just tastes odd to me. read more

Love Apicius, the pizza is quite good, I'm a fan of the chicken parm, the ravioli and the tortellini en brodo soup. The couple that run the restaurant are sweet and kind, a great neighborhood establishment. I wouldn't say it's the best Italian in the 5 boroughs, but it's a far better place than the Yelp reviews make it seem. Support small businesses and good food. read more

There's a lot of good press about this place, but since most of it seems to be circa 2006 I'm guessing that Apicius is just past it's prime. I go here for two reasons: It's the closest pizza to my house It's the only place open past 10 near my house I've been many times and tried many different kinds, hoping to hit on something even just one notch above simply edible. The buffalo chicken/chicken ranch pizzas look delicious (or atleast they do if you're me), but the crust is always dry and tastes fake and it's way too salty and never hot enough. The plain slice is kinda like eating sauce on cardboard. The mozzarella slice is like eating mozzarella on cardboard. It's just not good. But damn, they always manage to get me just by being open late. You win Apicius, you win. read more

This review is for take-out/delivery only, so I can't comment much on the dine-in experience. For the sake of convenience, Apicius has become a dietary staple for me since I moved into Astoria a year ago. It's the closest restaurant to my apartment and it's one of the only places within walking distance (other than the bodegas) that is open later. While you can definitely find a better Italian meal or pizza in the area, the convenience keeps me coming back for those late-night snacks, quick slices on my walk back from the train, or afternoons spent lounging on the couch where even getting out of the house is an achievement. In terms of a regular slice of pizza, Apicius is nothing special. It's not good, it's not bad; it's just a standard slice of pizza. There are a number of toppings and "specialty" slices, but nothing that can't be found at most other pizza-serving establishments. There's chicken cutlet and broccoli, eggplant with fresh tomato and mozzarella, grandma-style, buffalo chicken, etc. They also have pretty well-priced chicken (and other meats) rolls, calzones, heroes, etc. Since I'm usually going for convenience, I've only had a pasta dish there once, but it wasn't bad at all. Strangely enough, living in an area with so much Greek food, I find myself ordering a Greek salad from Apicius A LOT. I don't know what it is, but I find their's to be just perfect for what I'm looking for (as long as I don't forget to ask for them to half the normal number of red onions they put on, which is a ton). If you're looking for a good meal or the best pizza around, Apicius is probably not for you. But for someone like myself that lives nearby, it's a great convenience. read more

Get the Grandma slice or a full Grandma pie and you won't regret it. Crust has a nice good crunch. A little fresh basil on top. Perfect amount of sauce to cheese ratio. You can't go wrong. Anyone who says the pizza here is "divine" must have been born to a mother who thought blowing lines of coke all day for 9 months was "divine". The pizza straight up sucks, BUT they are open late and have a bunch of other stuff, which is awesome. Also I don't think there is another pizza shop conveniently nearby. We visited Apicius on a weekday night and found the service to be excellent. The waiter was extremely attentive but not to the point of actually being annoying. I have never actually been inside this place and i have never had the pizza. Menu was slipped under my door once upon a time. Then one cold lazy night, suffering from a craving for good Italian, i came upon it my junk drawer of menus. My boyfriend got lasagna and i got the Chicken Apicius (Chicken with broccoli rabe and white beans) I was pretty happy. I will admit, it was a little salty for my taste, but still better than most of the Italian take out i have had in Astoria so far. They do however, take quite a while for delivery. read more

To be honest, the only pizza I religiously order from here is the Vodka Sauce Pie. I don't know what they put in it, but it's so amazingly delicious. I have ventured out to try their Arrabiata pie (spicy sauce & sausage)--both my boyfriend and I are NOT fans. It didn't even look appetizing. Looked like a sloppy joe slabbed on a pie. Went to Apicius for a confirmation party, and wound up being extremely surprised! What looks like a little pizzeria actually hosts a very nice intimate party, and the service and food were great. Took home a menu, and the guys said they'd deliver to me although I'm out of the way a bit. A few nights later we gave 'em a shot, and now have a new italian menu in our rotation. read more
