No idea.... It's a Japanese diner that serves Chinese food? Great place. Try it. The owners are a Huntington Beach couple and it is always crowded. The missus does fantastic service.

First time coming to this restaurant with my Japanese friends. It's a small Japanese communities where we can get together eating and chatting! The staffs are very friendly and the head chef/owner is a very passionate person! And he was very accommodate-able person! Love it!

Yuzu Yuzu Pepper Shio Ramen Noodle

Cute Japanese Chuuka eatery with relatively affordable dishes! My fiancé and I came for lunch on a Saturday, shop is small with table and bar seating. The vibe is a typical Japanese Izakaya. We got the Sapporo draft (small $5 each), yuzu shio ramen ($13), half fried rice ($6) and liver stir fry ($15). The Sapporo draft was icy and cool, very refreshing. Yuzu shio ramen wasn't the best I've had, comes with a piece of chashu, menma, green onions, and bean sprouts, flavor is light so I was able to finish. Liver stir fry was a little salty but portion is generous. The fried rice was the best! Not overly salty and had hint of MSG. Overall solid Japanese eatery with good food and fast service. Would love to try the curry my next visit!

Mabo Tofu

A hole in the wall, neighborhood place where most customers and staff know each other. It was our first time there, but we felt welcome. The food was delicious and the service was great. We came here for the champon, which is difficult to find at most ramen stores.

Subuta
Benson K.

It's hard to find a Japanese restaurant in the US that specializes in Chuuka style food. That's because Chuuka essentially means "Chinese food." It's a Japanese take on Chinese cuisine, or Japanese-Chinese fusion. Chuuka takes popular Chinese dishes such as mapo tofu and twice cooked pork, and adapts the flavors to suit a Japanese palate. I decided, therefore, to go to this restaurant, which has the word "chuuka" in it. The menu does have expected Japanese fare such as ramen and curry, but it also has Chuuka cuisine such as mapo eggplant and hiyashi chuuka. I love sweet and sour pork at Cantonese restaurants, so I went ahead and ordered subuta, which is the Japanese version of the dish. While most people think of sweet and sour pork as having a reddish sauce, the Japanese variant has a darker brown sauce. This restaurant's version of subuta uses pork belly instead of pork loin. I actually prefer pork loin, given that it's deep fried, but the pork belly was still good. The veggies were all cooked, and the sauce was the classic sweet sauce I expect from the Japanese version of sweet and sour pork. My wife got yuzu pepper shio ramen. I noticed the broth here was thinner and soupier than ramen I'd expect from places like Daikokuya and Tsujita - meaning that this place tries to stick closer to a Chinese style ramen soup broth. Very nice. It's a pretty long drive for me, but if I am ever in the area again I would consider stopping by again.

A Legendary Slurp - Gone But Never Forgotten It is a true…read moretragedy for the Orange County food scene that Hakata Ikkousha in Costa Mesa has closed its doors. This wasn't just a "ramen joint"--it was a masterclass in authentic Fukuoka-style soul food. The Broth: Liquid Gold The standout was always their Signature Tonkotsu broth. You could literally taste the 30+ hours of labor that went into it. It had that distinct "frothy" texture (the bubble of the bone marrow) that you only find in high-end Hakata shops. It was rich, creamy, and carried a deep umami funk without ever being overly greasy. The Hits * Black Tonkotsu: The roasted garlic oil (mayu) added a smoky, dark complexity that ruined all other garlic ramens for me. * God Fire: For those who like to sweat, this offered the perfect balance of heat without sacrificing the integrity of the pork flavor. * The Karaage: Genuinely some of the best fried chicken in the area. Massive, juicy thigh meat with a shattering, thin crust and that addictive spicy mayo on the side. * Customization: I loved that they let you pick your noodle firmness. "Hard" was the only way to go to ensure that perfect snap with every bite. The Atmosphere The Costa Mesa location always had a great energy--functional, clean, and unpretentious. The staff were always efficient, greeting everyone with a loud "Irasshaimase!" that made the experience feel truly authentic. It's heartbreaking to see such a high-caliber spot leave the neighborhood. If you were lucky enough to eat here, you know we lost a heavy hitter. To the team at Ikkousha: thank you for the memories and the best bowls in the city. You'll be sorely missed! Note: For those still craving that specific broth, their Torrance locations are still holding it down--definitely worth the drive to keep the dream alive. Come back to OC! !

They also have outdoor seating and high chairs available upon request. You first enter a line in the mall and fill out an ordering sheet that they come out and give you, along with a marker. I like that the restaurant is located directly across from the parking structure (on the smaller side of South Coast Plaza across the bridge). The chicken karaage is huge, juicy, and goes so well with the sauce that's provided. The gyoza is so perfectly pan fried and crisp. My go-to is the red king, which is essentially their version of a spicy miso ramen but it's the perfect amount of creaminess here. BEWARE that the broth is REALLY salty so I always opt for light salt, which makes it perfect. Their ajitama egg is also perfectly soft boiled and seasoned and is a must. Their pork belly is fatty but melts in your mouth so I always choose it over the chashu. My husband got the green king, which in theory sounds strange to eat a basil and cheese ramen but this was also top notch! It's lighter in consistency than the red king and has a pesto taste - which I promise is actually really tasty. I brought my baby here one time and one of the workers gave her a Pokemon card :') At the end, they give you the check and you pay at the cash register. Amazing ramen, great service, and wonderful vibes.

The chashu pork was cooked to perfection: tender, juicy, and practically falling apart. The noodles were exactly how I like them -- thin and firm with the perfect bite. The ramen was easily a 10/10. Can't forget the chicken wings! The flavor was delicious, and they were perfectly juicy on the inside with a nice crispy batter on the outside. The homemade pork gyozas were also delicious. Compared with other ramen places in the same price range, there are probably a few options that offer better flavor and value. The meat was very salty, and the broth was also quite salty. I'm not sure if it was because the broth had been simmering for too long or if I happened to get broth from the bottom of the pot, but the saltiness really overpowered the other flavors. The restaurant is connected to a well-known ice cream shop, so I was expecting the ice cream to be something special, but unfortunately, it wasn't particularly memorable either. On the positive side, the staff were friendly, attentive, and very welcoming, which I appreciated.

We had actually expected just the usual soup ramen place, but later discovered that, although a view varieties of ramen noodles are offered on their menu, their specialty was in fact the dried version of a bowl of soup ramen noodles, or what our server referred to as a bowl of "reverse" ramen noodles, better known as Mazemen noodles.... sounded really yummy so far as I have always preferred dry noodles to soup ones. So, my wife went ahead and ordered a bowl of spicy California Tonkotsu ramen noodles, and I went with the Saitama Chicken Mazemen noodles..... and some handmade spicy wonton and fried Karaage Chicken on the side. Our food came out pretty fast, super hot, super fresh, and super delicious! I tried some of my wife's soup ramen, and yes, had great flavor... not too salty, and perfectly medium firm ramen noodles. As for my Mazemen noodles....woweee!.... this was my first time trying Mazemen noodles, with a large board on the wall with instructions on how Wadaya's Mazemen noodles should be eaten. When the instructions were followed, I dug straight in and...mmmmm good! The combination of ingredients in the bowl.... peppered ground chicken, scallions, chives, poached egg, minced garlic, fish umami, and seaweed flakes.... when all tossed together just made for an amazingly delicious bowl of noodles! I really loved and enjoyed it so very much! The Chicken karaage and spicy wontons were very delicious too and went great with our noodles. Other than that, very cute and cozy ambiance... like a little Japanese ramen place, service was excellent.. our server was so nice, so friendly, so attentive, and so helpful.... this made for just the perfect lunch! This place may not be as high profiled as other more popular and well known brands of ramen places, but it's definitely one of the best we've ever tried, and we'll definitely be back soon.

To my surprise, it was a good experience that we had. The shop was small, but the staff has a workflow nailed down. The parking was not too terrible on a weekday evening -- I was worried about the warnings, so we parked on the street. When walking to the hotel, I saw that there were many open spaces in the parking lot! We had the chicken cartillage and the calamari for appetizers. The cartillage was good, but portion was quite small. Some additional seasoning/salt would have also made it much better! The calamari was definitely VERY different from other places, but I liked the batter texture. What I loved about the ramen here is that they let you customize from the noodle size, texture, spice level, and the salt level! I always prefer the thicker noodle type, so I found it comforting to be able to request it at no extra charge. Beware there is extra charge for Spice level 4 & 5! I had the Garlic Tonkotsu ramen, which was flavorful and not too salty/creamy. My fiance had the Tan Tan ramen at level 5 spice, which he thought it was not spicy (it was for me!) and not as flavorful as what I ordered. Overall, I would definitely revisit this shop next time I'm in Oahu!
