What an amazing visit! We were looking for a quick spot to enjoy some yummy Japanese food and Meiji Seimen was the spot! We used Yelp check in and were sat almost immediately after we arrived! Their service is always incredible and very attentive since I always finish my water the moment I sit down. I ordered way too much last time so I ordered a fried pork bowl and it was perfectly crunchy and the rice was perfectly cooked. They event included a pepper that added a nice spice to the dish. My partner and her mom ordered udon and said the noodles and broth were perfect! We also tried their tofu and shrimp tempura! Totally loved my experience and I hope to have another!

Was running hot so I'm glad they had some cold options. Chicken karaage was a little overdone and I've definitely had better elsewhere. Beef tongue also overcooked but good flavor The chicken tempura though was very unique and good with I think black pepper in it? Want to come back for lunch specials like the gyudon cause I love beef bowls and also need to try that limited 10 bowl dish they have

We came on a Thursday around 6:20 but joined the waitlist around 6. We had to wait about 20 minutes before being seated but that makes sense since the restaurant is super small. We ordered a shabu shabu udon and the tempura zaru udon. They were both decent with chewy udon and a flavorful broth but it tastes like something I could make at home. I liked the udon more than the tempura since the noodles were super chewy and firm but the tempura could have been crispier and was on the soggy side. My friend thought the shabu shabu udon was okay but said she has had better udon elsewhere. Overall, I would come back to try their soba but wouldn't go out of my way or wait super long. Ratings Shabu shabu udon: 3.8/5 Tempura zaru udon: 4/5

I've never been into udon before I found this place because I've only ever had udon that was from a sushi restaurant or instant udon from Costco. But after I found this place, I love it so much.

SUPER small cozy little place serving good soba and udon! We put our name on the waitlist before we got there and still had to wait almost an hour for a party of 4 for Saturday dinner! This place is popular so come ready for a wait!!! I just had udon recently at another place so I figured I'd try out their soba. If I'm not mistaken they make these themselves. Hot Tempura Soba ($15) with large size upgrade ($3.5) and added seasoned egg ($2)-- It was a super simple but satisfying meal. The broth has depth without feeling oily or greasy. It's clean and simple but very well seasoned. I kept drinking the soup. I got the large upgrade since everyone else at the table was doing that and I'm glad I did! Since it was a super simple broth I probably needed the extra noodles to be full. Ajitama was beautifully done and I'd get it again next time! Shrimp tempura was whatever wouldn't go out of my way to get it again. I also wish it came with a dipping sauce! Actually what happened was my first choice was sansai (Japanese mountain vegetables) soba but they ran out of sansai and my heart broke because I was so locked in and committed. That's exactly what I was craving so had to last minute change to tempura... I'll have to come back and get my sansai fix!! I personally don't know if the soba was special enough for me to be like "wow I taste the difference!!" but that might be because I got it hot? Next time I'll probably get it cold. Or try their udon instead. Fried chicken ($9.5)-- BEAUTIFULLY fried and seasoned! Super juicy, savory, and good portion size. The dipping sauce is good too! I much prefer sauces like this over when places just give you mayo. Must order!! Will be getting again!! Parking is easy since it's located in a strip mall. Just make sure you put your name on the waitlist when you're near the restaurant and check in on the iPad when you get there!

Food: Egg, Tororo, Mentai Udon (Hot) Price: $15 (not including tax) Overall: This is my second time coming here and I love it! Came around lunch time on a Thursday and it was kind of empty (unlike during peak dinner time where there would be a waitlist). Inside, there is limited seating so a big party would need to wait/split off. The menu is a QR scan and the time of taking our orders and food coming out was in a timely manner. Ever since Japan, I have a love for Mentaiko so I really enjoy the udon; 1+ for the bouncy of the noodles too! My friend ordered the soba and takoyaki (he let me have a takoyaki) and the takoyaki was really good! Their other location is Okidoki, so definitely try out both locations!

Put yourself on their waiting list! People got there and start lining up before they open. We arrived when they open and we were already #8 in line. We waited 45 mins before being seated and the line was twice as long when we left. It's a very small restaurant but so worth the hype. The Nabeyaki udon was absolutely delicious. Such a clear broth full of flavor with chewy udon noodles. It was a big bowl and I love that it has enoki mushrooms, fish cake, an egg, and a delicious shrimp tempura. Can't wait to go back again. Drooling just thinking about it.

    Rachel C.

I ordered the hot tempura udon and thought the flavor of the broth was good but I was disappointed that it only came with two thin pieces of shrimp tempura for protein, which I finished quickly. It was mainly just udon in broth so if you want protein, I wouldn't get this. I'd come back to try something different like that shabu shabu udon instead.

    Curry udon
    Joy L.

Food (split between two people): - Curry udon (8/10): this dish was quite solid and the udon noodles were cooked to perfection (aka very bouncy texture). The curry flavor was also great. There were thin beef strips in the bowl, which I thought were very tender and delicious. I would get this again! - Fried chicken bowl (9/10) + shabu shabu (7/10): the fried chicken bowl was the star of our meal! It was incredibly crispy on the outside, and really juicy on the inside. The rice underneath was also cooked well, and I really like the sweet salty glaze on the chicken. I didn't like the shabu shabu as much though, but the beef strips and udon noodles in it were cooked well. Service: We came to the restaurant on a Monday lunchtime, and there was no wait! The servers were friendly and quick, and they refilled our waters. Ambiance: The interior reminds me a lot of your conventional Japanese restaurants. Since it's not too loud in there, it could be a good place to catch up with a friend! Parking: The restaurant has a parking lot out front and there were ample parking spots when we went.

    Tempura zaru soba
    Nhi T.

Ordered: tempura zaru soba It's a tiny restaurant so the wait is kinda long. The staff were nice, quick, and accommodating. The soba noodles were fresh, bouncy, and chewy. The soup was light and refreshing. The tempura was fresh and crispy. I wished they didn't have the onion tempura, the raw onion flavor overpowered the whole dish. There's plenty of parking in the parking lot. The yuzu sorbet was more like shaved ice but it was really refreshing.

    Curry Udon
    Tristen S.

Got there a little before opening and there was already a waitlist! Couldn't join the waitlist on my phone before opening, but you could sign up on their tablet in front of the store. It's a small restaurant and the tables are kind of close together. The servers were friendly and the food came out fast. Loved the texture of the noodles. I got the beef curry udon with level 2 spicy soup. It was on the lighter side, which I liked. The Kakuni really stood out to me! The pork was really tender and had a lot of flavor. Definitely a must order! It's located in a small plaza with a good amount of parking. Come a little before opening to add yourself to the waitlist because the wait can get a little long during peak dinner times.

Very small real estate but they made the most of it. Service was exceptional and glad the server recommended spicy level 1 or else 2 might have been a bit too much for me.

Do u guys take cash sorry for adking?

Yes, Currently we do. Starting April 1st, We will be cashless.

My daughter loves fried chicken and shrimp tempura but has an egg and dairy allergy. Is there any egg and dairy on both?

Fried chicken does not have egg or dairy, but the tempura batter has egg and dairy. Both items are fried in the same oil, so I recommend not ordering if your daughter has a severe allergy.

    Hi, Do you take reservations?…

They don't take reservations, but you can join a virtual waitlist! You'll get updates about wait time, when your table is getting ready, and when to check in with a host! You can join online or in person

Do they still serve soba noodles?

Yes we do!! We also sell our Soba(Limited amount) at Mitsuwa market place in Irvine location

Does Meiji Seimen use any msg in their food? Thanks.

Are there entire vegan options- ie, do the dipping sauces for the Zaru soba/udon contain dashi or other animal products of any sort? We have a pure vegan in our party, no egg, dairy, bonito flakes, dashi, or anything of the sort

R u dog friendly? Thank you

No outside seating/No dog allowed as of 5/2022.

    Is this place open saturdays?

Yes. But the wait can be long.

Has anyone had the sliced tomatoes? What's it like?? Im very curious to see what it's like. Like come on guys...it's JUST tomatoes, but IS there SOMETHING to it?

it's the best tomato I've ever had in my life! must get every time

What sort of dishes would you recommend for a first time visitor? Which udon dish would you…

I forgot the real name, but it's the beef Udon that I highly recommended. Their broth goes well with it

Do they have any good vegetarian udon or ramen options?

There is a big poster on the wall and the same material on their web page that explains how their dashi is made from seaweed and shaved bonito fish. So if you don't mind the fish there are many veggie options there.

This wasn't just a "ramen joint"--it was a masterclass in authentic Fukuoka-style soul food. The Broth: Liquid Gold The standout was always their Signature Tonkotsu broth. You could literally taste the 30+ hours of labor that went into it. It had that distinct "frothy" texture (the bubble of the bone marrow) that you only find in high-end Hakata shops. It was rich, creamy, and carried a deep umami funk without ever being overly greasy. The Hits * Black Tonkotsu: The roasted garlic oil (mayu) added a smoky, dark complexity that ruined all other garlic ramens for me. * God Fire: For those who like to sweat, this offered the perfect balance of heat without sacrificing the integrity of the pork flavor. * The Karaage: Genuinely some of the best fried chicken in the area. Massive, juicy thigh meat with a shattering, thin crust and that addictive spicy mayo on the side. * Customization: I loved that they let you pick your noodle firmness. "Hard" was the only way to go to ensure that perfect snap with every bite. The Atmosphere The Costa Mesa location always had a great energy--functional, clean, and unpretentious. The staff were always efficient, greeting everyone with a loud "Irasshaimase!" that made the experience feel truly authentic. It's heartbreaking to see such a high-caliber spot leave the neighborhood. If you were lucky enough to eat here, you know we lost a heavy hitter. To the team at Ikkousha: thank you for the memories and the best bowls in the city. You'll be sorely missed! Note: For those still craving that specific broth, their Torrance locations are still holding it down--definitely worth the drive to keep the dream alive. Come back to OC! !

The gyoza had a nice crispy bottom and were so shockingly juicy inside it felt almost like a soup dumping! The sushi roll was also packed with flavor and a nice heat. It was really the teriyaki wings that stole the show. Again, ridiculously juicy with a nice crunch on the outside, the sauce was insanely good! Sweet, rich, garlicy, umami - all the best flavors. Fall apart tender and thick seems to be tricky and they have it down. Im gonna finish up this review and head on over for some excellent ramen right now.

Randomly decided to try this place with the wife last night…read more I remembered there being a spot called mogu mogu here prior and confirmed with the waitress that it's the same menu! Spicy miso ramen: 9/10 Actually one of the better ramens I've had lately. The broth is creamier and isn't overpowering with chicken/beef flavor. The chashu was nice and tender as well. I really liked that their noodles were al dente and not too soft Deluxe mazemen: 8/10 Taking my first bite, I was instantly greeted with an explosion of umami. There's a LOT of flavor packed in this bowl and the noodles used are actually a bit thicker which is right up my alley. My only drawback on this dish was that I wished it came with some sort of veggies to cut through all the flavor. They also give you a small serving of rice at the end for you to mix into the bottom which was a nice addition Kurobota sausage: 7.5/10 We've recently been on a kurobota craze. Don't get me wrong, these were great but we've only had them charred and grilled before so I was taken aback when I saw that these were only steamed. Flavor was spot on but I'm a sucker for a nice char or crisp to my meat Overall, loved the service and small restaurant vibe of this spot. We were seated very quickly and the food came out even faster. Definitely come try this spot, I know we'll be back

The interior is cozy and small with authentic Japanese decorations/setup. Kinda felt like we were eating in Kyoto or something, lol. The lady who served us was friendly and gave us good recommendations. I think she was handling the whole operation to be honest. To start it off, we ordered their specialty chicken karaage and it was very delicious. It has a nice crispy and crunchy texture. The batter on the chicken was good and once you bite it, the meat is juicy and tender. Doesn't really need dipping since it's so good. As for the Mazemen, we ordered the Deluxe and Veggie one, both is a 5/5. Very flavorful and it tastes just like ramen, but without the soup. The presentation of the dish looks like a work of art. Very picture pretty. I ate that shit up within ten minutes. After that they give you a scoop of rice so you can mix it up with the leftover sauce. Lots of umami for sure. Definitely will come back again to try the other flavors. People, trust me and come through!

I've been around this area for so long but only just now am I trying Kashiwa Ramen!…read more Going inside, the seating area is not large, and off the bat, I couldn't get seated with my family because the 2 high chairs they have available were already taken by another family. Thankfully, they had a booster seat available to have our child sit on. We ordered a miso ramen, a spicy black garlic ramen and a gyoza for our appetizer. The person taking our order was patient with us as we ordered even as we were dealing with our toddler. Our requests were accommodated respectfully and to the best they could! Upon first glance, the gyoza looked good, like it was a family recipe and made from scratch! The spicy garlic ramen had thick, and a tasty looking broth and the portion sizes for the ramen looked like decent enough for the price. The taste for the gyoza was good, but the spicy black garlic ramen definitely stole the show! The broth was the perfect level of savory with a delicious blend of garlic that wasn't overpowering along with the pork broth. The chashu was incredibly tender and flavorful and the ramen was cooked perfectly - *chefs kiss*, amazing! Another reason that helped me decide on eating here was that there is a student discount for OCC students! Definitely cool that the local business is supporting local students! I had a great experience eating here with my family - the food was delicious, the staff was helpful and it was joy!

I didn't know much about this place before trying it but was reassured by the queue of people waiting. Great price points for absolutely delicious food. Although I enjoy ramen, I was in the food for spicy tuna, I tried a large bowl with two generous portions of incredibly fresh and delicious spicy tuna. This almost reminded me of a tuna tartare because of how finely the mince on the tuna was, I was surprised I liked it as much as I did as I was experience larger tuna chucks like poke, I'm so glad they made the decision to prepare the tuna this way. Along with the generous portion of rice and salad with the bowl, this was a perfect lunch option. I also treated myself to the crispy chicken kaarage, a definite treat. Freshly made and delicious option. Overall, I will absolutely be back, even the infused water was memorable. Service was great, friendly and knowledgeable. There is an optional service charge that the service make sure you are aware about.
