A really good Japanese lunch spot. A cute little restaurant located in a strip mall area. As a warning, this place gets pretty crowded, so you may have to wait 20 minutes or so depending on how busy it is. At this restaurant they mostly have Udon, soups, and some cooked meal sets. This place is the real deal. I came here in the middle of a gnarly sinus infection so my throat was incredibly scratched up. There is a bit of a wait but that is NO problem for a restaurant so small with such quality. Upon walking in, the wood frames and large poster signage boasting of their handmade noodles will entice you, but it's really the smell of their dashi broth in the air that gets you. Of course we got the karaage; I was JUST thinking about the best karaage I had in Japan as I ordered it, wondering if it would compare. It did. Piping hot with juices that exploded in your mouth and burned your tongue. It was perfect. I personally loved it just with a squeeze of lemon on top and the seasoning was also... just amazing. Everything about their shabu shabu soba blew my mind. I personally was craving soba so they substituted it for a dollar. Definitely worth it because WOW their soba was tender, slightly sweet, and seriously was on par to the same exact dish I had in Japan, a niku soba. I also tried their udon noodles. It was so bouncy and chewy and not at all overcooked. I kind of liked the very firm and chewy bite to them, slightly slightly undercooked because as you eat it, the noodles will become softer. I have no words to describe the incredible lunch experience we had at Meiji Seimen. It's in an unassuming strip mall and a true local, hole in the wall restaurant with only a few tables and always a long wait. I recommend checking the current wait time and getting on the Yelp waitlist before heading over. Staff was all so friendly and accomodating and as soon as they noticed I had a purse with me, provided me with a bag hook I could borrow while we dined! That seems like such a small thing but it was truly so considerate and I appreciated it so much!! My fiancé and I shared their delicious fried chicken appetizer (this is a must get - incredibly crispy large pieces and perfect ratio of meat to batter), he got the pork katsu curry udon set which he loved and said was so flavorful, and I got the tempura udon with extra fish cake. I had Meiji Seimen bookmarked and we decided to try it before picking strawberries at Hana Field since we would be in Costa Mesa. Parking was easy to find in the parking lot, but there was a decent wait to dine in for lunch on Saturday. For our party of 2, we put our names on a wait-list and waited about 30 minutes. The restaurant is not that large which explains the wait. The interior was decorated in wood traditional Japanese style. Service however was very attentive and friendly. We scanned the QR code to browse the menu. We decided to order curry katsu udon (spice level 2), grilled mackerel set, and cold egg + tororo + mentai udon. All of the food was extremely delicious, especially the udon. This is definitely an authentic Japanese restaurant with Japanese employees. Most of the diners were Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese. I have been coming here for the last couple years, and I have to say it never disappoints. Me and my boyfriend always share the large curry udon and a few appetizers and usually it's filling for the both of us. The restaurant is small, so the wait times are understandably longer than some other places but it's well worth the wait- they make their udon noodles in house every day. We almost never get dessert but after our last visit, we're definitely gonna start ordering the panna cotta. Best texture of a panna cotta I've ever had at a restaurant. We had a great first visit to Meiji Seimen. We got there about ten minutes early, but still were #6 on the wait list, after a party of 6. We got seated about 15 minutes after the store opened. As I expected, the space was cozy and noisy, a little much for my mother, who is sensitive to ambient noise. The music was all Japanese pop music! I enjoyed it because some Japanese restaurants mix in whatever Asian language pop music, perhaps thinking few will notice. I ordered the inaka soba. Our server helpfully advised me that it was not conventional soba--rather than a broth, it came in a sweet-savory sauce. I never tried inaka soba before (not even in rural Japan), so I had to try it. The first surprise was the noodles. They were thinner than what I normally get, but clearly freshly made. They were chewy and hearty. Both my mom and I were surprised by the shiitake mushrooms because they were simmered in a sweet bath. I couldn't place the taste. Maybe mirin with less salt or soy sauce than usual? Overall, the mix of grated daikon, sesame seeds, finely shredded nori, dried bonito flakes, green onions, and egg was a nice classical Japanese mix of flavors, and the wasabi added a nice spike. As our server said, it was a sweet-savory sauce that wasn't too sweet. The experience was kind of like the mazemen that is trending right now. I wanted to mix it all while it was hot, and ended up eating it quickly before my spouse and mom finished their food. My mom kept commenting on how good the broth was. It was light, without the heavy soy sauce or sugar flavors that you find in some places. The udon noodles were first rate. Fresh and chewy. I could see why people were lining up outside for them. My mom got nabeyaki udon, which included chicken, egg, fish cake, and green onion. My spouse had sansai udon. The sansai tasted like it might have been gotten fresh from California, even though that is unlikely. I never had sansai like that in the US before. It turns out the noise was not a problem as we ate because we just chowed down silently, commenting on the food every now and then. It's not a place to linger over conversation with friends anyway, because they limit you to 90 minutes at your table. One big bonus for Meiji Seimen: parking is easy. Some minor things. I was a little disappointed that they wanted you to use your cell phone to look at the menu. The print on the phone was tiny, and I couldn't zoom in. It got slightly bigger when I rotated my phone, but then you see less of the menu at once. They did have old print menus on hand, which were easier to see. The space was very small, and because they were so busy the staff were always walking through with trays of food in the narrow space between tables. We are small people and don't need a walker, but I wonder how the experience might be for people who need more space to walk. And then there was the noise level. What a gem of a location in Costa Mesa. I was craving soba because I've been kind of sick of other noodle dishes lately, and Meiji Seimen outdid themselves. My only complaint is that there is additional fee for a salad.. how I wish they added sine veges on pthe side with the fried chicken in order to complement the dish. Got there a little before opening and there was already a waitlist! Couldn't join the waitlist on my phone before opening, but you could sign up on their tablet in front of the store. It's a small restaurant and the tables are kind of close together. The servers were friendly and the food came out fast. Loved the texture of the noodles. I got the beef curry udon with level 2 spicy soup. It was on the lighter side, which I liked. The Kakuni really stood out to me! The pork was really tender and had a lot of flavor. Definitely a must order! It's located in a small plaza with a good amount of parking. Come a little before opening to add yourself to the waitlist because the wait can get a little long during peak dinner times. read more

Great no frill restaurant. Small inside so probably not the best for huge parties. Came here for dinner on a weekday & I was able to add myself to waitlist when I was 5 miles away. I was craaaving cold soba and this place really hit the spot. The sauce was savory & was great with the added wasabi. Good portion sizes & quick service. We were in and out in less than our hour. My boyfriend always get their Shabu Beef Udon - quality is consistent & delicious. Love their broth. 10/10 recommend. read more
