Legit sushi spot - I was able to use my Japanese and the servers were super nice! The vibe inside transported me back to Japan.

Tucked away in a shopping center, you can find this restaurant that seems to have a bit of a off layout with bathroom outside of the restaurant. Came here for the lunch specials and price is very decent. $16.99 for bento box and $22 ish for the more premium lunch combo. Decided to get the sushi lunch. Oh yeah!! The salad dressing is awesome The rice texture was to my liking but the quality of fish was meh... nothing to rave about. Server was great!. Very friendly and attentive. I will comeback in the near future and try their bento box.

What a hidden gem! I've been here twice now, and both visits have left me genuinely impressed. My most recent trip was on a Friday evening: we were seated immediately at one of the open tables, and our server whisked away our drink orders and returned with them in no time. To start, we shared garlic edamame and tempura. For mains, I chose the Three Kings Cut Roll and a spicy tuna handroll, while my friend went with the Three Kings Roll II and the Lollipop Roll. We also both enjoyed a comforting bowl of miso soup. Our waiter was gracious and attentive as he patiently answered all our questions and timed each course to perfection. Every bite was delicious: crisp vegetables, fresh fish, and rolls that melted in your mouth. As sushi aficionados, my friend and I agree this ranks among the best sushi we've found in the area. Although the restaurant was fairly busy, the interior remained quiet, and the dim lighting created a peaceful, inviting ambience. With its exceptional quality and unbeatable prices, this spot has definitely earned its place on my go-to list.

Very nice staff and great parking on a Wednesday night. No wait and we were seated immediately. They have a nice outdoor patio too. Everything was very fresh and they have a great Santa Barbara sea urchin. I've had a lot of bad Santa Barbara sea urchin that was very fishy so I was starting to think the city was cursed. Their sweet shrimp, otoro, blue fin tuna and amberjack were my favorites. Great chawanmushi too. Not a lot of places offer it. Perfect for a quiet dinner evening or date night.

Talk about a hidden gem!! I've been gatekeeping this place for so long but I'm finally ready to share my favorite sushi spot lol. This is a Japanese owned sushi restaurant, where the owner works there himself. He actually came to our table and spoke with us one time and he is so friendly and kind. Kakurega serves great quality sushi for an unbeatable price. It's a small, unsuspecting restaurant right off the 55 freeway in a super random tiny plaza. Driving by, you'd never notice it but IYKYK! I mentioned it is on the smaller side, there are about 10-12 tables so it's a pretty cozy ambiance. They encourage making reservations but every time I've been here I've been able to just walk in. The sushi here is fantastic quality and generous serving sizes. Service is always great, the staff here is very attentive and our food comes out quickly. I always get the crispy rice with spicy tuna appetizer, crunchy roll, baked eel, and seared cod! Unfortunately they don't have a formal website or anywhere with their menu online, but as of March 2025 cut rolls are about $11-$13 each. Very reasonable prices for a casual, intimate dining experience that's great quality.

Good sushi for the price! Was a pretty quiet place, easy for some conversation over some cheap and cheerful food. Had a few things - bluefin tuna, toro, yellowtail, red snapper, uni, salmon eggs, albacore, and a spicy tuna roll. Everything was pretty good - ended up getting seconds of the salmon eggs and red snapper (they put a little yuzu pepper paste which made it worthy of a second go at it). Would have done another toro and uni piece but was pretty full at the end. If I'm around the area and craving some sushi at a casual spot, this is definitely a contender.

great in all aspects. fresh ingredients, experienced chef, amazing staff. had a slight mix up/misunderstanding over the phone but they were incredibly kind and accommodating. Nice ambiance (pretty small place though, id recommend you make a reservation for indoor seating) everyone enjoyed the handrolls, crispy rice with spicy tuna, rainbow roll, etc Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for good quality for a good price :)

I saw this place on other yelp suggestions. The service was amazing. We went for dinner & was early enough to get seated quickly. I absolutely love this place and respect mom & poo shops. Their uni was exquisite, we got their seared salmon/ a roll and calamari. Their price is great for the quality. I can't wait to come back this is definitely one of my new favorite sushi spots!

Cute cozy place, great friendly service, & extremely fresh tasting fish! I am picky about sushi spots, and I can't wait to come back to this one. 10/10

Excellent sushi place. The fish were fresh. The ratio from fish to rice is amazing. The hotate was super fresh & shucked from the shells. Everyone was super friendly. I would definitely come back here when in town. I was so hungry & forgot to take pics of all the beautiful, colorful plates of sushi.

I've been here 3 times in the last month and a half and I can't get it out of my mind. Everything tastes so fresh and delicious, the service is awesome, and the environment is cozy. I have yet to bite into something I didn't like here. Truly a hidden gem. Our favorite appetizers are the agedashi tofu (comes with a delicious little eggplant and shishito pepper) and crispy tuna rice (best crispy tuna rice we've ever had). For the sushi, you can't go wrong but my personal favorites are the seared salmon, yellowtail belly, red snapper (get it seared for their popular version of this), orange clam, and uni. The uni is so sweet and clean, it melts in your mouth and doesn't leave even an ounce of a bad aftertaste. My eyes naturally close on their own after eating each piece of uni... and I always get multiple because it's only $8 each! The servers and chefs are super sweet and always make sure to give you a warm welcome. I mean that quite literally too, as for our first time our server made sure to fix their heat lamp on their patio so that we weren't chilly outside. We really appreciated the extra effort and consideration!! I'm so in love with this place and hope to keep coming back for a long time. Please check this place out the next time you're in the mood for sushi!!

Did I just eat in Japan!?!? Wow! This place is just WOW! We ordered a so many dishes and not one of them is one we wouldn't order again. There was no weak link. Everything is so fresh and the flavor profiles remind me of how I ate in Japan. The staff is super friendly and the place is exactly what it needs to be. Kakurega translates to hideaway and this is exactly what it feels like. It's a little getaway hidden in plain sight. The attention to detail on every bite was superb. Hands down the best sushi I have had in all of socal.

Today we went there not knowing of the change. The food is now certainly "all you can eat" quality. We opted against the all you can eat limited menu, and ordered of the regular menu but the quality was terrible: 1. The toro nigri was chewy, very thinly cut, with a very small piece of rice. 2. We could not tell the difference between regular salmon and the salmon belly nigri they brought us. It looked and tasted exactly the same. Definitely not fatty salmon belly. 3. The yellow tail belly was chewy. 4. All the fish in their nigri sushi were thinly cut with very little rice. Definitely all you can eat amount of fish. 5. The rolls were small and for some reason all tasted the same with little flavor. If you like all you can eat sushi places which always offer low quality fish, you might like this place. We will miss sushi Imari and the great quality sushi they served.

I've been putting off this review based on an experience I had here a few months ago…read more I had worked a long shift as a blue collar worker and was starving when I came in. I also had to use the restroom really bad. I walked in and spoke with a lady at the front counter and I told her I needed a table for 1 but before I was to be seated I needed to use the restroom. She looked at me with a skeptical look and asked me "Are you just trying to use the restroom? Are you really gonna eat here or just use the restroom and leave?" in a very condescending tone. The way she looked at me and spoke to me made me feel like someone off the street, a bum, trying to use the restroom. I'm Latino and a blue collar worker who wears work boots and work pants, so I feel like my appearance made her feel comfortable to question me and speak to me the way she did. If I was a white dude in regular clothes I highly doubt she would've talked to me like that. I insisted I was there to dine in but that I really needed to use the restroom first. After I convinced her, she pointed to the right corner of the restaurant and told me to go ahead. I was halfway to the restroom when I said you know what, **** this. I'm not spending my money where I'm not being treated with respect. I did an about face and started walking out and the lady asked me if the restroom was closed or something but I told her I didn't want to eat there anymore. I high-tailed it out of there and went to Chopob sushi down the street where I was treated much kinder and got to use the restroom before being seated, without question. I will never give this business another cent. Treat your customers with respect.

You won't find your typical rainbow rolls at this restaurant (I do love a good rainbow roll though). The rolls we ordered were the Snowflake (which was flavored with yuzu), the Lobster roll (which was so much more than a typical baked lobster/langostino roll), and the Are You Kidding Me roll, which was big on truffle flavor and came topped with fried onions. I thoroughly enjoyed the Snowflake roll. It had multiple types of fish inside, and the yuzu flavor added the perfect fresh citrusy touch. It also came dotted with a tiny bit of sriracha (or some other spice) but it was just a hint and it's easy to wipe off if you don't want any spice. The Lobster roll was the star of the show. I give it a 10/10 for presentation, and it was also the best tasting one in my opinion. It was plated with a shelled lobster tail, which looks visually pleasing, but the most impressive part was right before serving, the waitress lit it on fire and handed it to us, as if it were flaming creme brulee or something. The flame actually wasn't on the roll itself, but was on what appeared to be a trail of salt (presumably soaked in some kind of alcohol to make it burn). It definitely was a cool effect and I've never seen anything like it in a sushi restaurant! Lastly, the Are You Kidding Me roll - this was my third favorite out of the three we ordered. It was pretty good but I think the truffle flavor was a bit strong. I'm also personally not a huge fan of fried onions on top of sushi since I think it clashes a bit with the freshness of the fish, and gives me too many bar food vibes. But it certainly was flavorful and my husband and I still finished it. We shared these three sushi rolls between the two of us and it was just the right amount of food to leave feeling full. Besides the food, the restaurant itself was nice although I'm not sure they really needed to have a live DJ there as opposed to having a Spotify Playlist. Didn't bother me but I don't think it really added much to the vibe. I would definitely eat here again!

We started with the spicy tuna crispy rice and avocado crispy rice, both of which were incredible. Each dish had its own distinct flavor, with a really nice balance of acidity, sweetness, and savoriness. We also tried a range of different rolls, and every single one felt thoughtfully crafted and unique. The ambiance adds to the experience. The space is open, well-decorated, and has plenty of seating, making it great for a night out. It does get busy during dinner hours, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time. Parking is fairly convenient with a nearby structure, which is always a plus. Service was excellent as well. The staff was attentive, efficient, and made sure everything flowed smoothly throughout the meal. Drinks were another highlight. The Pretty in Pink and the Yuzu Drop were both a hit at our table. Overall, this is a great spot for a fun night out with high-quality sushi, great drinks, and an inviting atmosphere. Definitely a place I'd come back to.

The evening already started off on a bad note as there doesn't seem to be an organized waitlist system -- they seat parties based on whoever arrives first but we were seated after a party that came later despite having the same number of people... After waiting around 15 minutes, we were seated and started ordering what we wanted. Our waitress was busy handling other tables so we had to ask another waiter on 2 separate occasions for water cups, plates, utensils, etc. He seemed confused why our table wasn't prepared adequately. Our first appetizers finally arrived after 30 minutes which included the edamame, some tempura/dumplings, and takoyaki. The portions were tiny but good. Fast forward another 15 mins and the baked salmon roll had arrived which tasted subpar as the rice was incredibly mushy. After waiting another 15 minutes, we asked our waitress if we could just pay for what we had eaten and leave as no one had checked up on us and our order. It had been an HOUR since we were seated and no sushi rolls except one had been served. The sushi chef let us know to wait ten more minutes while he got started on our order, basically letting us know he forgot to make our food. We let our waitress know that we refused to wait any longer and to charge us for what was already served to which she replied with a snotty tone that other places will have longer wait times and rolled her eyes. The sushi chef was kind enough to comp our meal after this disaster, but the waitress left a bad taste in our mouth. Won't be coming back here.

We wanted to have the premium menu, but one person in our group of four was running late. We asked if we could have the premium menu and just get regular menu items until they arrived. We didn't think it would be a big deal, but our server said everybody had to be there at the beginning to order premium. We ordered a rainbow roll to hold us over until our friend finally arrived. We had various nigiri including salmon, tuna, albacore, yellowtail, sweet shrimp, scallop, eel, uni, masago, salmon egg, as well as soft shell crab, broiled and fried mussels, octopus, and shishito peppers. There were probably some other items I forgot. Everything was generally good, although a few pieces of tuna were a little on the dry side. Slow service the main issue. The restaurant wasn't very busy, and it seemed like there was only one server who I'm sure was trying her best. It often took quite a while for food to arrive, and several of our orders were mistakenly delivered to the table next to us. We thought we were done, and at the very end another large plate came out including some of the premium items we never got earlier. The meal was ok, but we probably wouldn't return.
