What a rad experience! My party of 4 was lucky enough to snag a Friday night 5pm reservation (they book out 2 weeks before with reservations opening at 9am - SET AN ALARM!). We were walked to the back of Highball and whisked away through a beautifully disguised door into this gorgeous speakeasy chef's table that sat 14 people. My party of 4 was on one end, which made it easier to chat and see one another. Our server Athena was so helpful, friendly, and attentive - you really felt like your party was the only one in the room and had her full attention. I love that she learned our names, was witty and offered amazing and educated recommendations for cocktails. Our main sushi chef was so fun too. A little quiet and hard to hear at times, but maybe that's just our mid-40s-concert damaged-ears for you. Every piece of nigiri was expertly crafted and seasoned. The presentation included a description of the fish and where it was from. (We even were hand fed one round!) The cocktails were delicious and unique and paired very well with all the fish. I'm already salivating at thinking about coming back. For the add-ons, the only one that felt like a "must" was the uni/caviar toast. You can skip the others and not feel like you're missing out.

This spot is a must try!! The service was amazinggg, both the sushi chef and our waiter was so sweet and made the experience wonderful. We got super yummy drinks, recommended by our server. They also gave us complimentary shots at the end as a treat for my bf and i's anniversary, which were delicious. Favorite bites of the night was definitely the crab w miso garlic butter, amberjack w/ shishito peppers, chutoro w/ green onion. The flavor combination pairs perfectly with their fish choose. I recommend getting the 16 course for $100, it's definitely worth it. Everything was insanely delicious and well thought out. The Chefs are all very experienced, and explained that this restaurant kept their pricing reasonable because they believe that Omakase should be something everyone should be able to enjoy. It's definitely harder to get a reservation, but if you are on Open Table at exactly the time it drops, you will get it! They also have waitlisting list options if you check their website it has more info.

In a small strip mall, you would t think a great sushi place is in it. ITS AMAZING!! Parking lot is small but in evening they have complimentary valet. Located in corner, you ring the bell to be let into the bar area. It's small but very charming. You walk into hall where restrooms are located. You push the red wall to enter into a larger eating space. The design is good because the have sitting area to have cocktail as earlier seating finishes up. Once seated you are given complimentary sake. Sushi chefs are social and very engaging. This place also delivers a show that is incomparable to other places. Service is amazing. Food is out of this world. Small in portion but taste is far out weighing portion of food. Come here for quality, amazing taste, fancy show in sushi making and the amazing people. If you want amazing taste and royal treatment, this is your place

After enjoying pre-cocktails I was called in to be seated at the sushi bar. They started with a refreshing cold sake. I opted for the full experience and did the 14 sushi omakase course. I enjoyed the unique ways they prepared the sushi and the homemade soy marinades. Amazing service. Servers were very informative and knew their stuff. They deserve a 5 star rating as the combo of tasty food, knowledgeable staff and unique drinks made it a home run for me. I'll definitely be back as long as I can get in as it's a challenge to get a reservation through open table

We have been trying to get a res from Naisho for weeks, and finally got one on a Saturday. Their reservation opens daily at 9am, and it is 2 weeks out. There is no signage of Naisho from the outside. Just ring the door bell of Highball and someone will check you in. The speakeasy style and the limited seating elevated the whole experience. Once inside you go through the bar area and through 2 doors you enter the 14-seater sushi bar. Luckily we were seated in the center of the bar and had Chef Shimpei as our chef. We chose the 16 course omakase ($100) and cocktails ($16-$20). You get to choose a sake cup for a sake on the house before the meal. I thought that was a nice gesture. Chef Shimpei explained every nigiri served. Each piece was masterfully prepared with attention and a little twist. The 16-course omakase included: Oyster with radish ponzo sauce Seabass from Spain Halibut from Korea Scallop from Hokkaido Salmon with sweet vinegar kelp Hamachi AmberJack with toasted shishito Tuna Chu toro with house made wasabi Yellowtail with salted Kombu Black snapper Otoro with seared charcoal Snow crab with miso butter Cod with black truffle Eel with burnt honey and orange Crab hand roll We even got a complimentary drink because the bar was backed up and our cocktails were delayed. At the end of the dinner, we noticed that some people were getting caviars and uni, so we asked about them and ended up getting both the uni toast and tuna tartar as add ons to our meal. They were $20 a piece. Overall it was a fun dining experience. Even though the nigiris were smaller in size, I like the concept of having variety of courses without breaking the bank

FYI, you have to ring the doorbell for service. We stood there for several minutes before realizing this. You walk through Highball to get to Naisho. Dinner service is quick. Since there are 3 seatings, you have less than 1.5 hours to get through the omakase and drinks. 16 courses for $100-totally worth it. It's all nigiri/small bites. Ours consisted of oyster and nigiri. I was blown away by some of the flavors. Some that stood out are the unagi with honey and orange zest, toro with pickled onion, and shigoku oyster. Once we finished our 16 courses, we ordered more nigiri and a couple of the off-menu items (toro, uni toast). Amazing dinner, for sure. Drinks were pouring. We got a few cocktails which came from Highball--very well crafted. Some were a little smoky for my taste but still tasted great. Strong. The chefs and servers were all super friendly and fun. The vibe was light and easy. I enjoyed the entire experience and am looking forward to coming back. SOON.

Tough to get reservations here but managed to snag one Monday night at 9:15p It's in the back of the speakeasy High Ball. Cute back room with good decor. It is chilly in here though. Smelled very faintly fishy in the restaurant but that's expected. Good priced omakase for $100 16 courses. There's no appetizers or anything and they did not close with a tamago nigiri. Pieces were a tad on the smaller size but tasted good. Many of the courses were seared. Stand out was the halibut which I've never had before and trout which looked and tasted kind of like salmon. In the beginning they give you a complimentary sake shot and the owner? Also gave us another towards the end. The cantaloupe island cocktail was very tasty. A bit on the sweeter side and the banana flavor really came through. Overall this is a decent omakase spot if you're ever craving it

Naisho is a fantastic hidden gem tucked away behind a speakeasy called Highball. Both are intimate spaces, so they limit reservations to 4 people max at both Naisho and Highball. Note there's a 1-hour dining time limit, though we stayed past ours. The value here is hard to beat. Omakase start around $250, but Naisho is more affordable (because portions are smaller). The base price is $75 for 12 nigiri, or $100 for an oyster, 14 nigiri, and a handroll. We upgraded at the end of our meal and added Uni toast with caviar for an extra $15, which was fantastic. Overall, I enjoyed Oscar's humor and service and great value for the price. The experience was definitely worth the drive!

Naisho exceeded my expectations and is easily one of the best value omakase experiences I've had. At $100, it's an excellent price point, but it's important to remember that this is still a traditional sushi omakase. Each course is served as a single piece (mostly nigiri), so grab a Taco Bell pre-game or just order more courses if you're particularly hungry. Reservations are highly recommended, though securing one can be a challenge. Check-in takes place at Highball, the storefront of Naisho. There's a bell to ring upon arrival, but seems like it may go unnoticed sometimes as I ended up waiting quite a while once until a staff member came out. Since Highball is often full, you may not be able to grab a seat while waiting for your reservation, so try not to arrive too far in advance. Once inside, the experience feels intimate and personal, with only a handful of seats surrounding the counter. Chef Shimpei and the staff are welcoming, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about their craft. Each course is presented with care, and the pacing allows you to fully appreciate the progression of the meal. The fish was exceptionally fresh, the rice was perfectly seasoned, and every piece offered its own balance of texture and flavor. What stood out most was the emphasis on quality ingredients and technique. I also enjoyed hearing Chef Shimpei share stories throughout the meal, including the thought and effort that went into developing the drink menu. My favorite drink so far has been the Melon Bar, though it's worth noting that beverages come from Highball, so they can occasionally take a little longer to arrive. I couldn't have been happier each time I've visited. For the price, the value is outstanding. It's difficult to find an omakase experience in Orange County that delivers this level of quality, service, and atmosphere without spending significantly more. Whether you're new to omakase or a seasoned sushi enthusiast, Naisho is absolutely worth a visit. I'll definitely be back. In fact, I'll be there again tonight!

Arrival & Bar Naisho sits in a modest Costa Mesa strip mall--unassuming, but quietly credible if you know the area's Asian food scene. Parking, miraculously, was easy. Entry is via a doorbell, speakeasy-style--on-brand for "Naisho" (内緒 = secret). The host greeted me by name (always a nice touch when it feels a little magical and a little suspicious), and led us to the bar. The space leans dark, moody, and softly art deco. The bartenders were knowledgeable and confident, walking us through a menu heavy on spirit-forward cocktails (whisky, gin, sake). A lot is pre-batched, which explains the range. There's also a thoughtful non-alcoholic and tea program we didn't explore but appreciated in principle Dining Room and Ambiance We were greeted by Chef Alex who was warm, charismatic, and served with masterful simplicity. The room is elegant without trying too hard: gorgeous minimalist tableware, pristine glassware and a well-spaced 14-seat counter. Music hit the rare "Goldilocks" zone--present but never intrusive. Food Some bites were genuinely outstanding, and Chef Alex carried the experience with charm and ease. Midway through, he made a rice snowman for a little girl--completely unnecessary, completely perfect. Fish quality is elite and I've noted some standouts below * Seared toro: melt-in-your-mouth, borderline unfair. We ordered an encore. * Unagi with truffle salt + orange zest: absurdly good. * Bluefin tuna had slightly overpowering scallion--great fish doesn't need a loud supporting cast. We noted some slight repetition in toppings--subtle, but worth addressing for variety over 16 courses. Drinks While we didn't get to try their drinks menu extensively, I did order their recommended old fashioned substitute which was really delectable, albeit strong (forgetting the name). I liked that they serve it with a big ice cube and you DIY pour it yourself to control the intake. They have an extensive teas and spirit free menu for the Gen Z / millenial non drinkers. Loved the quirky prescription shot glass -- great touch

One of the best omakases in OC! Literally can't get anything better for the price and quality. There is a 14 course option for $75 and 16 course option for $100 - an amazing deal. Reservations are a little tricky to get. They open 2 weeks in advance at 9am. I highly recommend going on their website for more detailed instructions. The inside only seats about 14 so it's a very intimate and personal experience. The chefs prepared each and every course in front of you and explain where each piece was from. Each bite was beyond delicious and beautifully presented. There are also additional courses you can add on for extra charge (highly recommend the uni and caviar toast; it is served on Hokkaido milk bread and is to die for!) You can also order any of the drinks offered at Highball. Each drink was delicious and you can tell so much thought and care went into curating the menu. This place is hyped for a reason and if you're lucky enough to grab a reservation you will not be disappointed. Everything was amazing from the food, drink, staff and service.

Such an amazing omakase experience! Our reservation at Naisho was at 9:30 PM and when we arrived, we waited outside Highball. The host was really kind and let us know it would be a few minutes, then came back to update us that it might be a little longer. We ended up being the last group seated, just before 10 PM. That being said, the chef and the food completely made up for the wait. I've been to some of the top sushi restaurants in OC, and Naisho is definitely one of my favorites now. The 16 course omakase starts at $100, which I think is a great value for the experience. They started us off with a complimentary sake shot and made us feel so welcome throughout the night. Every piece of sushi was perfectly seasoned... actually, some of the best seasoning I've ever had on sushi. Each piece had so much flavor without needing anything added to it. The cocktails come from Highball, and WOW. I got the Butter Milk and Cantaloupe Island. Both were sweet and easy to drink, but I would definitely recommend the Cantaloupe Island! At the end of the omakase, they offer optional add-ons. We went with the uni toast, topped with caviar and drizzled with honey. Such a unique combination and the perfect way to finish the meal. Overall, this was an amazing experience. Despite the delay getting seated, the hospitality, chef, sushi, and drinks more than made up for it. I already want to come back!

Ask the Community - Naisho Omakase

This sucks, tried 2 weeks straight and cannot get recreation. Seems like the bot is making recreation since credit card is not required. What can we do to secure reservation? I give up.

We're sorry to hear you've had such a difficult time securing a reservation, Rosemary. With just 14 seats, availability can fill very quickly. Reservations are released through OpenTable on a rolling 14-day basis at 9:00 AM PT daily.…

Can they accommodate for a gluten allergy?

Yes, we can definitely accommodate a gluten-free omakase experience! We just ask that you please leave a note on your reservation or notify our team upon arrival so the chefs can prepare accordingly.

Do i need to make a reservation?

For the most up-to-date availability, we recommend making a reservation through our OpenTable page: https://www.opentable.com/r/naisho-omakase-costa-mesa. We open reservations two weeks in advance on a rolling basis, so new dates become available…

Hi . Do I need to make reservations?

Technically, no. But it's the only way to make sure ahead of time that you'll get in. You can also call them when they open to check availabilities

We started with the seaweed salad and yakitori, which were both tasty and made great appetizers. As nigiri lovers, we were excited to try all the different selections. My favorites were definitely the toro and yellowtail, and the uni was sweet and delicious! One thing I really appreciated was the fish-to-rice ratio. The nigiri had a small amount of rice, so you could really enjoy the fish without feeling too full too quickly. The nigiri are pretty pricey for 1 piece but it's fresh fatty tuna and blue fin. What do you expect. Especially since everything has gone up and cost of living is not the same anymore. I'll pay $6 for the nigiri. It's what we expected. Fatty tuna was on point! Service here is always amazing! Staff has been here for years. They even remember my hubby. Lol. Ambiance is casual. Can't wait to come back.

The lunch special was sashimi I got that came with spicy tuna roll and miso soup. It was all good. Wis I could have had more. 5/5. I thought the spider roll was a bit too pricey for my liking but it was so good I wish I got more. The soft shell crab was cooked perfectly. 5/5.

The turnaround rate from ordering to receiving was kind of slower than other AYCE sushi locations I've been to, but it made up in the taste for the most part. Rice can be a hit or miss here sometimes, but it's usually pretty good. The fish was fresh and the plating was beautiful when I ate here alone! I honestly love their mozzarella sticks it just hits the spot for me. There's no limit on how much you can order, but there is a maximum of 3 rounds of ordering. The servers (only male ones) I encountered were friendly and attentive, too. Refilled my water and was there for my next order either before or soon after finishing my round. However, I usually go during lunch (1-2) when it's not so busy. Overall, enjoy coming here and I think you pay for what you get.

I loved sushiwave growing up so i had reasonable expectations. The service was poor and un attentive. The ayce option with only rolls was priced on the higher side. The food was absolutely disgusting. My partner and I couldnt finish 80% of the food. We have never hated our experience at any all you can eat sushi place. This was a first. I would never come back and recommend others doing the same
