This place is a gem! We came on a thursday night and the place was packed by 6pm! The fish was absolute quality. Super fatty, melts in your mouth. They also have a vast selection of different fish that you may not find at other sushi joints. We enjoyed the different snappers, different jacks, and the classic bellies. Here, you order sushi by the 1 piece, but the prices are super fair, ranging from $2-higher end sushi. We also got the string beans tempura since they dont have a vegetable tempura. At first, I thought the fried batter was too light, but overtime, the light batter made it easy to down the entire dish. It was the perfect texture complement to the sushi. The servers were also super helpful and knowledgable and distinguished the different fish on the plate. The chefs were so kind to give us toro on the house and the flakey salt really paired well with the super fatty melt in your mouth tuna. The inside of the store was dark and moody, however, it seemed clean. The parking situation is fairly easy as it's in a plaza. Note that during busy hours, it may be hard to find a spot. Small spot with quick and friendly service - this place is an absolute gem. There's a good variety of options on the menu, including some dishes I haven't really seen at other sushi restaurants. But the real draw for me is the nigiri/sashimi. They have a great selection of different fish to choose from, and everything I've tried was super fresh. What blows my mind is the pricing. This is truely a hidden gem. I hear they are like eats sushi but idk i like this place better. The price is amazing, and the quality i would say is amazing as an omakase. You can create your own omakase with 10-12 piece of great sushi for less than 40 dollars. They have so many variety of fish under $3 and the quality is great i cant say it enough. Service was great, staff and chef were incredibly kind but that can only go so far when the food was mediocre at most. If you love omakase level quality fish, this will not be it unfortunately. I really wanted to like it but the cuts were inconsistent, too thick to a point inedible, and some cuts were really "briny?" and chewy i couldn't bite through and had to spit out in a napkin. Also, cuts do not look like menu photos, and our favorite was yellowtail so we decided to do another round but this time looks and taste very different not as good as the first. I couldn't finish it. The worst cut i have to warm everyone is the wagyu nigiri is absolutely horrible and i had to bite it 30x and it couldnt even be broken down. The kid asked for sushi, so we decided to try something new. Reviews looked promising, and I'm always a fan of a place I can grab a last minute reservation at. There were definitely some highs. The place itself is super cute, the veggie tempura was spot on, and we loved the "nuclear bomb" and the yaya roll was the favorite of the night. That's where the standouts and though and overall it was a bit hit and miss for us. Service was mid at best. A table that was seated after us was able to order and get their food before we were even given the chance to order, and we had to flag someone down multiple times just for the basics. For the other food we ordered, the golden dragon roll was just okay and honestly had way too many toppings. The three item bento box was a lot of food, but the teriyaki chicken and beef were not enjoyable and I wouldn't order them again. Only got nigiris and a salmon skin handroll. Good size cuts and each was very fresh. My critique is that they have mainly one sauce/pairing for every nigiri which worked for the most part, but it was redundant. The sauce is a light salty vinegar. I felt the sauce did not go well with the tuna and fatty tuna, and overpowered the taste of some other fish that might've been better off without or with a different sauce/seasoning. We had dinner here the other night. There is a small parking lot available. The restaurant itself is quite small and can fill up quickly. This is easily one of my favorite restaurants and sushi restaurants in the OC. The quality here is unbelievable. They get fresh fish deliveries 6 days a week. We let Chef Chris create whatever he wanted for us. It might be my go-to order on my next visit. We started with ceviche. They take nori and deep fry it into a chip. The shrimp, octopus and vegetables piled on top were not only generous but absolutely delicious. A great and refreshing way to start off the meal. Then came the nigiri. The Toro melted in our mouths. The sushi rice uses a red vinegar that makes you just want to enjoy the nigiri as is. Do not add any shoyu to it. That would be a huge injustice to the nigiri. The jumbo scallops, the A5 wagyu, the Saba, the red snapper, yes everything we got was unreal. The freshness and the flavors were incredible. We also got some rolls. The A5 wagyy roll was so good. The toro roll just reminded me that you can never have roo much toro. The blue crab roll was a rice-less roll and just stuffed with blue crab. One of the best sushi meals I have ever had. Their tiktoks kept showing up so I wanted to try. I have to say their fish is pretty good. Roll was nothing to complain about. Udon was a little more on the bland side for me but I do think I started eating more saltier recently so I added a little bit of soy sauce to the soup. The only thing was the sushi rice for the nigiri. The texture was very mushy? Very wet and pressed very hard together. I did like that they had a different route of using red vinegar to their rice but it was too tart. I contemplated on asking because I legimately thought that they had accidentally put their sushi vinegar portion twice by accident. Sushi District is the first sushi place in California that I genuinely enjoy. I visit Japan almost every year, and honestly, one of the main reasons I go is to eat sushi. The difference in quality and flavor is usually very noticeable. When I asked the staff why their sushi tastes so similar to what I get in Japan, they explained that they make "real sushi" using a blend of red vinegar, apricot, and French salt in their rice. The flavor is so well balanced that you don't even need soy sauce to enjoy the sushi. They also receive fresh fish almost every day, and the quality was honestly unreal. Every piece tasted incredibly fresh and carefully prepared. What made the experience even better was the service. Everyone was warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming, which made us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. What's even more surprising is the price. Sushi starts at just $1.92 per piece, which feels crazy for the level of quality they're serving. It's rare to find sushi this authentic in California, especially at such an affordable price. We went here to check it out since we heard the prices are quite reasonable and it is for the quality of the fishes. You self picked on the menu sheets and order drinks and specials items directly with the staff. Staff are nice but somehow very unorganized, they/she brought 2 drinks for 3 people and had to asked for it. She gave us the order from without a pen so had to asked. Since we ordered a lot of sushi, asked for ALOT of gingers so we don't have to ask ALOT later...well, she only brought the small or tiny portion so we kept asking 7-8 times more. Two of the items did not came out so we asked and she forgot to let us know that they didn't have it for today after she was informed by the chef. The foods are fresh, tasty very good and nicely presented. The place is clean and well organized for a small space. I think I found our new favorite sushi spot in Costa Mesa. I found it when we were driving in the area and noted to come back. I went for a solo date night and spent about $20 on 4 pieces of sushi and a roll which was not bad at all and I left full. I then took my partner a month later for him to try it and he loved it. Oh this place is great! A friend brought me here for my first time recently and I've been back so many times after to show it to more friends. They have a great deal on nigiri and it is such fresh delicious quality fish. The place is pretty small but they fit a lot of tables into that space.
