I really wanted to like this place more but the assembly of the sushi for the price wasn't equivalent. The sushi itself was fresh and all tasted great but the seaweed on the outside didn't wrap fully around so some of the rolls were coming apart. This location has changed ownership quite a few times... So I want to keep my reviews current. As of Dec 2024- Sushi District is awesome. Amazing service, fresh and innovative rolls and menu items. Great lunch special and I really enjoy the 6 different 5p rolls. Fun to mix and match and not get too full. Parking is always a challenge. We park on Cabrillo and walk over. Located in a small strip mall that is also occupied by Chixy Natural and Banzai Bowls, this vibrant sushi spot serves a great variety of Japanese food and drinks. The staff is very helpful with the menu and they serve up the food fast and efficiently. My recommendations include shrimp tempura, Jessica Alba roll, garlic edamame and the salmon sashimi. Although all the other menu items are quite good, as well. I think I will eventually try everything on their menu. I highly recommend sitting at the bar, as well. You get the opportunity to interact with the sushi chefs, which makes for a more personalized experience. I ordered the chirashi plate and thoroughly disappointed at the quality of the fish. Fish items were chewy and hard to bite through. Some items like the salmon were mushy as if frozen too long. Asked for ponzu sauce, got handfuls of soy sauce. Miso soup was much better. Salad unremarkable. But the overall quality of the $32 fish bowl was grocery store quality at best. Great service and great food! It was a little hole in the wall, but very cozy. Parking lot was super busy and we couldn't find a space, so we parked at chipotle a block away and walked. It was no biggie! We enjoyed the spicy garlic edamame, sexy roll, yellow tail roll, uni shooter, and crispy rice with spicy tuna--all of which were great! The edamame was spicier than we anticipated, but a great treat! There's only one bathroom, but from what we saw it's not too busy at this location so no worries. I'm pretty sure this place has changed management recently. In addition to the sign change, it's notable if you look at reviews from a year prior to more recent reviews-- they've started getting worse. I recently came and decided to get the three item combo. Nearly everything in the combo tasted awful and/or didn't look like the picture in the menu. The miso soup, I couldn't finish. It tasted like fountain water with a little miso in it. The Bulgogi had a thick sauce and tough meat (?). The California roll was missing cucumber, the salmon roll was completely different than what was advertised in the menu (there is a disclaimer, we were reminded, that pictures in the menu might not match the actual item. Why though??) My friend and I debated whether or not we should say something or send the food back; I didn't wanna be that person. We brought it up to one of the servers, and he got really defensive and passive aggressive. "Well I just went and checked the miso, and it tastes fine." LOL Okay bro. If I could eat here every day, I would. Sushi is my favorite food, and after moving to Costa Mesa I've found myself frequenting Sushi District more than any other spot. The sushi is always fresh and a great value for what you're getting (I'm looking at you Chirashi Bowl!). The staff are attentive and make sure we have everything we need throughout our meal. The restaurant itself has a cute and cozy vibe which adds to the overall enjoyable experience. There is a huge variety of menu items, so there is something for everyone. Bonus: they have a happy hour (weekdays 2-6pm I think). If you're looking for high-quality sushi at a reasonable price, this place is definitely worth checking out. It seems like a tight spot but there is a lot of seating around the perimeter and the parking lot has a decent amount of spots. It's usually quite popular so expect a waitlist or line! Their menu has a lot of options that are well priced, around typical amount for a sushi store I got the spicy california and spicy tuna roll, my friend got once of the fancier rolls. It isn't eye rolling fresh or extremely flavored, but it taste good and not too oily or fake. Very light tasting with one of the best ratios of fish to rice I've seen in a cheap roll! The order was made very quickly and I really like how they packaged the individual components of sauces so that the fish wouldn't be oversaturared in flavor/the crunchy parts would get soggy from sauce. read more

While I haven't yet tried the food yet I was immensely disappointed by the misspelling of the crab meat on the Alaskan roll in the Premium Roll section. They referred to the inside to be containing "scrabmeat" which i was excited to try but to my surprise there actually is no such thing as "scrabmeat". The Asahi was good though, hopefully the Alaskan roll will be as well. Hello Yall! I just ate at the Sushi District! I was super excited to eat here because all the other sushi places in the area are pretty good and another one couldn't hurt. Anyways ;) , i was scanning a menu and was really excited and intrigued to have something on their Alaskan roll that contains "Scrabmeat" which sounded really cool and interesting. Sadly, we found out that this was only a typo and that there actually isn't even a thing called "Scrabmeat". Really makes you think, doesn't it? Anyways :), my friend was a but upset and actually complained to our waiter that the Wasabi wasn't real and tasted bad. I believe her statement was: "this wasabi has the consistency and taste of playdoh. Do you see?, sir, there is no more wasabi on the whole table. If this was real wasabi and I ate this much, my mouth would be on fire, my body would be on fire. Im not blaming you, i just wanted to let you know." The waiter was very understanding and had a kind and generous aura. I have the spice level intake of a british person who recently got their wisdom teeth taken out; so this was no concern to me. The mustard sauce on the rolls was delish. One of the best places to get sushi. You can tell that they use quality fish. I absolutely loved their crispy rice with spicy tuna appetizer. Has a serious kick to it! It was so tasty. We also got the sushi burrito which was delicious! All the sauces that came with it were fantastic. We sat right next to the chefs which was cool. One thing I would like to note is they make the sushi SO fast. We ordered everything at once, and it all came out almost at the same time. So don't be like us and order slowly, one by one. Otherwise you'll be in and out so fast. Unless that's what you want then go for it. I was seriously impressed by the speed and presentation of the food. I can't wait to come back again. Went here with my family. We tried 3 rolls and we were disappointed. Fish and shrimp did not taste fresh, and the rolls were heavy with the mayo. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was too big to eat. It was twice the size of everywhere else I've been so nobody could properly eat it - too much rice. We also got few bento boxes. The sesame chicken was pretty good. The beef bulgogi was tough meat and swimming in sauce. The spicy chicken was the same, and was too sweet and not enough spice. Katsu chicken was overcooked. Gyoza tasted mushy in the inside almost like they deep fried them from frozen - my kids love gyoza but barely ate any. While still eating our appetizers, the entrees started coming out. I had my hands full eating and holding things and asked the server to come back with the last bento box. She then put the bento box on our table so we had to quickly consolidate appetizers on to one plate so that she can take some plates off the table to make room for the last bento box. I just arrived home after 10 days in Japan. We ate sushi every day, and ever since I've been back home, I couldn't get sushi off my mind. However, I've been hesitant to go anywhere because I feared that I'd be super let down. I was wrong! This place is right by my house and of course, Japan had a huge variety of fish, but I can not expect that from anywhere in CA unless I'm willing to pay a 150-200$ Omikase. The fish here was pleasantly fresh and delicious! Service is great as well, try to sit at the sushi bar. Here's what I ate. Everything was nigiri, and the rice was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The amount of seafood they delicately placed on top of the sushi rice was a great portion as well - like they do in Japan. * Bluefin tuna (recommended by the sushi chef) Outstanding! This melted in my mouth, I was looking for toro, but they sold out. But all good! This was absolutely amazing. * Uni This also surprised me! The Uni looked great and it tasted even better. A lot of the Uni I've had in CA has been not that great, but this Uni was fresh, full of flavor, and surprisingly better than some of the Uni I had in Japan (the cheaper spots of course, rotating sushi etc) * Ikara The ikara was okay. Definitely not bad, but not great. Which is fine because I only liked ikara from a few places in Japan, I think this is one of those things that has to be extremely fresh, and high quality in order for it to be outstanding. After calling a few sushi places, this small corner restaurant answered and confirmed they had outdoor seating - and I'm so, so grateful they did. I've heard about this place for a while and now I know why. They have such a large menu with so many different rolls, appetizers, and fish available for sushi. Our waiter was awesome - I didn't catch your name but whoever you were, guy with the glasses and bleached hair, we love you. So, onto the food - the oysters on the half shell blew my mind. I wasn't expecting amazing...but amazing, they were. Throw some Tabasco on there for some extra heat or suck them down as is; either way they were awesome. The tuna nachos were spicy so beware to all those out there not into heat. But it was a super filling appetizer with lots of crunchy wonton chips. We got the Kim Jong-un roll and the black flag roll (I think) and I have to say that both were good but the Kim roll stole the show.
