Very good ice cream, in a mix of classic and unusual flavors. Chocolate Zinfandel was a typical milkier chocolate but with a nice deep kick from the wine (no alcohol content), coconut (non-dairy, with coconut milk) had a fun gooey texture and clear coconut flavor, and mint chocolate chip didn't have that overpowering ice cream taste. Not too crowded at 5:30 on a Monday, but still a good amount of people there (not a surprise for an 86F day). So, how does it compare to other local ice creams? It's fairly similar to Dave and Andy's in the texture, moderation of flavors, and blue-collar nature compared to some of the fancier upstarts. Not sure it's so much better than Dave and Andy's that I'd want to consistently drive up and over Mt Washington, but the non-dairy offerings and some of the different flavors make it well worth doing at least once. read more

This past week I was craving some ice cream and remembered this place was nearby and had a awesome rating on yelp. Antney's has a lot of great options to choose from. Even options for those who don't love ice cream or are lactose intolerant. Their hard ice cream flavors are definitely very unique. The day I went they didn't have your basic flavors like mint chocolate chip or cookie dough. I'm not sure if that's normal but it's definitely not a negative. I tried the lemon poppyseed with rose and the caramelized banana. Both were tasty but I ended up going with a mixed fruit frozen yogurt. Is there ever a better day to try antney's than a National Ice Cream Day?! A hot Sunday afternoon with nothing better to do, ice cream it is! There was a continual lineup of people from the second we arrived until the second we drove away, so clearly this is the reason this place has so many five-star reviews. I jumped out to take some pictures of the menu so that we can look at them before we got in line. I was surprised to see that not only did they have homemade ice cream, but they also serve frozen yogurt, sorbet, no fat and no sugar options, and non dairy and vegan options. They also have pup cups for pets! There's literally something for everyone in the whole family! I went with a double scoop cone consisting of German chocolate ice cream as well as the chocolate peanut butter. My husband went with the Andes mint milkshake. After hearing about this legendary local ice cream spot from many people just this summer, I finally had the chance to visit Antney's on Poplar Street in Greentree. How did I, a huge ice cream fan, never know of this place before?! The ice cream is PHENOMENAL. Sixteen flavors of hard ice cream daily, three flavors of frozen yogurt and three sorbets. The hard ice cream includes vanilla bean, chocolate and strawberry every day, but the other flavors are not your run-of-the-mill creations. We had, for example, carrot cake, cinnamon churro and chocolate milk and cookies. Those were very hard choices, because there were probably three or four more that were hard final cuts from the list. They even offer homemade Pup Cups made with peanut butter and banana. There is also soft serve, shakes, sundaes and mix-ins, but I think you need to enjoy these spectacular, unique hard ice cream flavors straight up. Paws up from the dogs on the Pup Cups, too, and they are PICKY. (Those things smelled so fresh and banana-y that I wanted to try them myself.) Their hours are limited right now, 5 to 9 p.m. every day I believe, and the lines are long but move quickly. I visited Antney's with a friend last Sun. Having heard of its fame as the best ice cream parlor in PGH, we decided to make a pilgrimage to try it out. Despite my inherent skepticism of such claims, I must admit that Antney's lived up to the hype. Before committing, my friend and I each sampled a couple of their unique flavors. I tried the pumpkin spice latte and the key lime pie, and my friend tried the cinnamon apple honey and the chocolate mint marshmallow. Each of us decided on a double scoop of the latter flavor we tried, with mine in a waffle cone ($4.59) and hers in a bowl ($3.30). I'd never had key lime pie flavored ice cream before, but this flavor was just phenomenal, with lots of key lime taste and graham cracker crumbs mixed in. My friend's chocolate mint marshmallow was also delicious and unique, with bits of Andes mints and swirls of marshmallow ensconced in chocolate ice cream. The mouthfeel was also excellent--extremely creamy with the right soft-firm balance. Needless to say, we were quite impressed with Antney's. I endorse the claim of best ice cream in PGH, beating out Dave and Andy's respectably good homemade ice cream. As an added bonus, service from an older gentleman (the owner, I suspect) was very friendly, and the prices were quite reasonable. Summer=ice cream. It's that simple. We drove to Greentree just to try this highly talked about ice cream. It was totally worth it!! I had trouble deciding which flavors to try because they ALL sounded wonderful. I finally chose two and the hubby picked one. All of the flavors were very silly and creamy. My husband had the Red Red Wine which is wine infiltrated into ice cream. That's right! Wine & Ice cream. It's the new PB & J!!!! As a matter of fact you can mix flavors up if you wish. All ice cream is homemade there and when they run out of a flavor they replace it with another! I got to sample pumpkin pie, burnt almond torte and cherry oatmeal chocolate chip. Believe me it was like eating the cakes but without the flour!! He had just sold out of butter pecan and was replacing it with another flavor. I opted for the cherry oatmeal chocolate chip. They offer cones or cups.The also have milkshakes and your traditional ice cream flair likes floats, etc. To the right of the stand is a small outdoor seating area. I ordered one scoop for $2.50 and it was literally to die for!! This is not your soft serve although they do carry it. They also carry frozen yogurt. In a way it reminded of the old Isaly's which was once a Pittsburgh icon. I took it to my car and finished it there. It is located next to a chiropractor on Poplar St so it is a little tricky getting out but for this ice cream it was worth every penny. The BEST ice cream in Pittsburgh. The revolving flavor menu always keeps you trying something new (and begging for old favorites to come back). They offer a cotton candy dip for soft serve, which somehow is the most incredible soft serve of all soft serves.
