I lived in Italy and visited Venice dozens of times, and still found it difficult to navigate the alleys and passageways leading to this sweet little neighborhood. However, if you find yourself in front of this amazing pizzeria I highly encourage you to take a moment to sample the deliciousness within. First off, the restaurant interior is quintessentially Italian. I'm not sure if it's real, or just for the tourists, but the ambiance is everything you would hope it to be. Red and white checkered tablecloths cover old wooden tables, and romantic lighting highlights the rustic brick walls covered in black and white photos of the neighborhood over the years. It's absolute perfection. I've dined in this restaurant multiple times, but my absolute favorite item on the menu is Pizza Diavola... a simple pizza with tomato, mozzarella and spicy salami. (A note about pepperoni: You'll find salami on menus in Italy, the closest thing to what Americans call pepperoni. Look for "salame picante" if you want to try pepperoni with a slight kick. It's absolutely delicious!) The thin crust of Pizza Diavola, with blackened edges, is baked to perfection and served piping hot at the table. Every bite made me want to clasp my hands in delight, and exclaim something incredibly cliché like, "Mama Mia!" There was no need for embarrassment because everyone else was experiencing their own version of gastronomic bliss, exclamations and all. Do me a favor and check out this wonderful pizzeria if you have a chance.
