Alright, straight up, this place is for 30-40 year old yuppies with a hippie tendency, BUT. BUT, you can get very cool shorts, pants and skirts without an obnoxious print and with a smart cut for super cheap during one of their sales. It's all about the sales here. If it's still priced in the $40s, you're too early. That stuff will fall to $15-30 at the last sale. It's all timing and a little luck. I got a great pair of trousers for $15, my favorite skirt for $20, and tons of those cute plaid trouser shorts that fall to the knee for $20 (what are those called anyway?). Just for my favorite skirt alone I'd give it five stars, but you have to hold something against them for overpricing (-1) and selling some of the gnarliest fabric prints out there (-1). Oh, and don't forget, those same exact sales you see in the store are going on at their website. If you had bad timing on a sale in store because something you were watching is no longer available, I betcha it's still on sale on the website. read more

Lots of gorgeous clothes. Unbelievably overpriced. Very friendly staff. The dressing rooms are large with flattering (?) mirrors. Trying clothes on is a pleasant experience here. There is a decent sale section which is, in my opinion, the only acceptable way to shop here. I saw a lovely dress. Turned over the tag and it was $230. Only Advanced Shoppers should shop here. You can drop hundreds of dollars and still look like a hobo (sorry Berkeley ladies, but some of you do look like hobos). This is because of two reasons: the style of the clothes is nubby French, and the quality of some of them are pretty terrible. It's like hemming is out of style. Yet if you have a good eye, and you wait for sales, you can not only get a unique piece of clothing, you can also get it on sale (which may not be a steal, but at least be reasonable). I invested in some of their clothes, and mostly even from the sale section, they tended to be expensive. And sometimes, the quality of the clothing does not match up to the prices. Buttons fall off, sweaters pill and never look the same after one handwashing. And I looked stupid in the big, floppy collars and all the extra fabric. The dirndl skirts look so pretty on the hanger, but a lot of these styles only DO look flattering on tall, anorexic women. I fell in love with this long sweater coat which had passemanterie embroidery down the front. It looked so good on me. But it was $450 for a sweater. People were like, so, buy it. You love it. But even though I have the money I just couldn't deal with the concept of blowing that much cash on a sweater. But I still love to go and browse around, if only to get ideas --the clothing is very artful, I love the shabby chic housewares, the color palette is always interesting...great displays. The dressing rooms are awesome. And the clothing IS beautiful, even if it is insanely expensive and looks better on a hanger than on ME. read more

BEWARE of Anthro's SLOW return policy! I purchased a dress on my ATM card, of course they processed the charge immediately. But when I returned the item a few days later, they are now telling me it will take 7-14 days until I receive my refud. I understand there is a process for everything, but come on! Anthro - if you value your customers you will improve this policy and take better care of your customers. I'm very disappointed in you. read more

This place has stuff that looks amazing, but it most of it seems cheaply made, and WAY overpriced. I shop at garage sales, estate sales, outlets, and thrift stores. I shouldn't even be IN this store. DO NOT PURCHASE GIFT CARDS from this store! I was given a $100 gift card for being a carpool mom and I remembered to use it about a year later. The cashier scratched off the numbers off the back of the new gift card and soon after just told me there is nothing on it. I was told by the manager that they would "investigate" through corporate and that they would get back to me. A month later I still have not heard back! The way this was handled was like someones $100 gift was no big deal. Shame. Won't ever go back. read more

Love the products in Anthro... Hate the prices and the mediocre customer service at this particular location. Was looking at items on the sale rack and an associate came towards the end of the same rack and shuffled clothes together.. No "hi", "how are you", nothing. They carry the cutest home items, cosmetics, candles, and books. Location is pretty big and inventory well stocked. Gorgeous store filled with unusual clothes and household stuff. Very inconsistent quality because they source from so many different vendors. The sizes are strange too (for the same reason). Overall the clothes can be costume-y, as in, would look great if you were starring in a musical set in the 50's, however, since you actually have a normal job and take BART, that poofy skirt and patchwork tunic ensemble isn't going to work out so well. Still, if you buy an item here and there, you will have some cute stuff to spice up your look. I also have gotten a chair, pillows and sheets here. The home stuff is fab. They have decent sales and some of their out of season stuff ends up at Jeremy's. read more

So.. I love anthropology, this is my first time at this location - spending time in Berkeley to relax. I've been in this store for 30 minutes and I have clothes in my hands to purchase. There has been several employees walking around and in front of me... Even tidying up a section I was shopping in and not one... NOT ONE employee said a word - not a word to me. I must say this is the worst customer service I've seen in an anthropology. Sad. read more

Just tried to return some shams that I purchased online. After driving 45 minutes in the rain to return to the store, they refused to accept the return, stating they no longer accept bedding returns. However, the receipt clearly states that you are able to return to the store. Not helpful in the slightest, nor did they offer to print a return label for me as I was out and about in the area. I was going to purchase a different duvet and shams but no longer will given how inconvenient they made my day. read more

I generally don't shop here - - I'm more of a vintage/second hand fan. But the fabrics and styles of their dresses kill me every time. The ladies that work here are the sweetest ever - - Extremely helpful and go out of their way to grab that one extra thing from the back. I don't know what happened, but the gals today were AMAZING. I almost wondered if they had recognized me from my review but I think I may have just been being a little paranoid. I'm pretty sure that I was greeted/asked if I needed help over 5 times! For some shoppers, this could be viewed as overly persistent but to me, in a store with at least 10 employees working at any given time whom usually all ignore me, I don't mind! They just recently started carrying shoes in-store (previously on-line only) which is so smart. I myself am much more likely to purchase shoes that I know fit vs. take a gamble that they might, and if they don't have to pay the shipping & handling myself for a return. I scored an amazing pair of strangely comfortable 4" oxford heels today and another girl who noticed my love for tights, brought over 2 pairs from the back that had just come in that she thought I might like. They're adorable and I got both pairs (brown & grey polka-dot!). So anyway, upping my review to 5 stars cause gosh darn, as far as today's experience went, they deserve it! :) read more

Tried to return a gift w/ a gift receipt. They wouldn't give me cash back. They said it had to either go back onto the same card (which I was fine with even if it was my friend's card, but they needed the actual card to process it) or "store credit". Now I've got "store credit" at a store I never shop at, they get to essentially keep the profit they got and the items I returned. So don't buy gifts for others thinking the gift receipt will allow exchanges. Also there were 2 dogs in the store (and not tiny dogs being carried in purses). Large dogs that came up to my waist and were snuffling around the clothing. read more

The usual Anthropologie fare, with a surprising amount of pretentious bourgesie-ness that you wouldn't think you'd find in Berkeley. If there were any complaints, it wouldn't be able this Anthropologie location but Anthropologie stock in general being too limited and Stepford Wife-ish. But the Fourth Street shopping area wouldn't be completely without this Anthropologie at one end. read more

I have been to the Anthropologies in San Francisco, San Jose and even Birmingham, Michigan, and none of them have the same warm, spacious/open, and friendly atmosphere as the Anthropologie in 4th Street, Berkeley CA. Head straight to the back for the sale section and then work you way front to back. Don't forget the shelf of marked down housewares near the cashwrap. :) read more

I just loooooove being a girl! This is what you'll probably sing about when you walk in through the doors. Everything in here is so feminine - frilly dresses, dainty jewelry, pretty blouses, you'll think some French girl threw up in here. But no - it's just how Anthro does it here. I don't know what I've said about Anthro before but consider me now one of the converted. Either Anthro is starting to work in up and coming fashion talent or I've started to realize that they have up and coming fashion talent creating the very clothes you are now perusing in their store. Even if you don't know who the people are who are making the clothes yet - just look up their name and their designs and you'll start to get the sense that Anthro is selling you something that you'll keep around for a while - both for its timeless style and its quality. read more

As everyone has already said...adorable stuff, but prices on the clothing, even on the sale rack are generally nuts. I did get a blouse there once that was highly discounted...it looked cute on me in the dressing room, in the perfectly rosy dim light glow, and skinny mirrors (?)...but I have yet to wear it (a year later)....turns out, it's actually kind of weird. So be careful of that...if you finally find something that fits and is cheap enough to rationalize buying. I am happy with their selection of SALE household items...plates, cups, napkins, serving platters, measuring cups, etc. Even at full price, they're more reasonable and very cute things can be found. Took off one star because the quality of some tops is not great (too thin) and the customer service could be better (if they don't have you size, you have to call the other stores, they won't do this for you). This Anthro is nice because it's on Fourth Street. The location is the only reason I may be swayed to visit--if it were by itself anywhere else, I wouldn't take all the effort to go. The location is an impressive size--pretty large, racks of clothes everywhere, lots to look through. I came in the Christmas shopping season so it was all well organised and laid out for the frantic gift seekers. WINNER in the dressing room department. Each dressing room is huge, with mirrors, benches, and stools. No coming out of the dressing room awkwardly to look at yourself in the mirror on the outside of the door (seriously, who thought of that dumb idea?!) necessary. I can't really say much else. Expect the same kinds of clothes, furniture, and prices as any other Anthropologie. read more

My mother (like me) is generally a cheapskate, but whenever she comes with me to Anthro, she uses the phrase, "Just buy it" a lot more than I'd expect. Going in here often reminds me of when I visited Japan (fashion lover's heaven) -- everything is exquisite, but sooooo expensive that my cheap little heart cringes in dismay. The Berkeley shop has a good sale room in the back (I always gravitate directly to the clearance racks in every store), but a lot of stuff is still too pricey for me. A lot of my most favorite items of clothing come from Anthro, and their super-lax return policy is awesome. read more

Over a few of years retail therapy, my closet has slowly been accumulating a good deal of Anthropologie clothes. Note though, that this wouldn't be possible without some good scavenger hunting - meaning looking through the sales section for items that have double-discounts! (These items can not be found online either). So far, my scavenger hunts have been MOST successful at this store. Maybe it's because it's far enough away from all the college students, and at the same far away from the city (which has its own Anthropologie store). The sales section is always huge - there are racks of coats, pants, and dresses that are always on sale. I'm a huge fan of their dresses, and dangerously so(for the lack of space in my closet). I've only bought a dress from them at full price once though (~$150) - that was years ago when I was an inexperienced shopper. Now all the other dresses I've bought have been at a 50% discount or more &of excellent quality. Additionally, when I'm a bit too lazy to go to the store, I like to buy their clothes online and then return/exchange the items that don't fit me or are a bit strange in person. The customer service is always superb - I've returned items that were months old, and that I never wore (with a receipt of course). Plus their sizing is consistent enough that most items will fit - you just need to double check by reading through some of the reviews. Not sure where I would go without you Anthropologie!! Now I wish there were a 'guy' version of this line so that I can bring my boyfriend here and dress him up too. read more

Won't be shopping here any longer because frankly the return policy sucks. I've had a jacket for 9 months and there's a large hole in the elbow. Store manager says they will not exchange or return because it looks worn and washed. The jackets made to look faded so that's completely unfair and if I'm paying this much for clothing I expect the return policy to be much better. Will be bringing my money to Nordstrom where you can't beat their return policy. read more

This place has beautiful clothes. Too bad none of them come in a size 10 or have a reasonable price tag. Despite how inaccessible most of the clothing here is, I do love their cotton shirts and splurge on occassion for a sweater or dress here. If you can handle it, i recommend braving the sales racks. Which are packed in a small cove in the back of the store, so that you have to bump and shove other salesgoers to find something worth trying on. I am sure this is a sales tactic to get you away from the sales items as soon as humanly possible. Figure out your size and then look for the sale item online - where there is better selection and less chance of accidentally purchasing a damaged or stretched-out item. it's also very difficult to find a salesperson on the floor, and if you manage to track one down and ask if they have these pants in a ten (or some reasonable size for us girls with hips), they shrug and say, i don't think so, then offer to check and run away never to be seen again. Also, I recently bought a sweater here for my office holiday party. When I went to put it on, i realized they had left the big black plastic anti-theft tag on it. For dropping 80 bucks on a sweater, you'd think they could be a bit more careful. I didn't have time to bring the sweater back to get the tag removed before the party - sad christmas! and i've been trying to call them all day to ask if there is a way to remove the tag myself, but their phone is off the hook or continually busy or something. overall, nice clothes, but crap for customer service. read more

If I were one to max out my credit card, this would be the place I'd do it. I am madly in love with vintage/retro and this is one of the only places I've found that really pulls off the vintage look both for you and for your home. I LOVE LOVE LOVE them. However.... I HATE HATE HATE their prices. They are ridiculously expensive. Maxing out my credit card would probably happen in just a few outfits! Sometimes you can find decent sales. My favorite candle in the world (and I'm a candle snob) came from here - Volcano fragranced candle by Aspen Bay Co. Fabu! As much as I love the style of the clothing on their models and wish I could pull it off, I've found that not all their clothes really fit the average body type. Things are cut to enhance sticks. (A stick, I am not). But when I DO find something... Whoo hoo! Shoes are only available online and for ridiculous fees. Soemtimes, I'll pay the high price for a cute $125 dress or something, but I can't justify spending $400 on shoes. Another complaint (surprising how many complaints I have considering I LOVE this store)... Is that sometimes when you're ordering something online or when shipping things between stores, it gets a little messy on occasion. It doesn't seem like they have the smoothest processes on the operations side of the business. If only I could get their clothes at at least half the price, all that made ME look great, and with Nordstrom customer service... I'll keep dreaming and in the meantime... Cute & interesting.... think Uma Thurman in Prime.... can be difficult to dress in head-to-toe anthropologie... you risk spending a lot of money just to look frumpy. Unless, of course, you're wealthy and super tall and skinny. If so, GO for it. Pricey, yes. But they have some interesting things in their sales racks. And every now and then, I recommend splurging a little. A little retail therapy.... ahh. Also, one really great thing about this particular store is that you can bring the entire store into the dressing room to try on - there is no limit on how many items (I like that bit of trust that's hard to find in a lot of other stores).
