One of the best clam chowder I've ever had... full of clams, rich and just so delicious. Had their swordfish with herbed butter, so fresh and so good. We also had their fried oysters, fried whole belly clams.. huge portions, super fresh, not too heavy on the batter and perfectly fried. Seafood bake is great as well. They're not open for dine in right now but they're busy with take out orders. If I can describe to you how good the food is, I'll run out of words. LOL. Saw this place on a Youtube video and really wanted to try their lobster rolls. We ended up liking everything but the lobster roll. After trying a bunch of lobster rolls in Maine, this was meh compared to those. However, the fish tacos were really good. The fish was crispy, not dry and they were very generous with the amount of fish per taco. The fried calamari was just how I like it, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, really yummy with the hot peppers. And... the best for last, the Portuguese fish chowder!! It was sooooo good! Had pieces of fish, shrimp, scallop, chourico (chorizo). Must get!!! Service was good and food came out super fast. Everything is packed in to-go containers as they are short staffed. We were visiting the Providence - Newport area in late December. It rained all day and put us in the mood for some delicious seafood. We wanted to eat where the locals eat. So we headed to Anthony's, which was featured on Food Network. There is a fresh fish counter for take home as well as a dining counter that offers a variety of seafood appetizers, fried and steamed options. Dine-in customers will have their food taken to their table. The dining space is homey and on a first come basis. The service was welcoming and quick. We recommend the Kung Pao calamari that was deep fried in a light batter and tossed in kung pao sauce. The fried seafood platter for two served with fries had scallops, shrimp and calamari. We were looking for a quick bite for lunch and thought that some chowder and a stuffed quahog sounded good. Hearing that Anthony's had awesome stuffies, we decided to give them a try. Their chowder is unique, and certainly not bland. Loaded with potatoes and quahogs, it was certainly creamy, but not super thick. I thought that it was quite good. The stuffed quahog was delicious, as we were told by a friend. It was very flavorful, loaded with clams and chourico. We went for the lobster rolls! They had a sign covering that selection stating there was a shortage of lobsters... in Rhode Island?!? So we decided on scallops. Portions were definitely plentiful. But the clam chowder lacked clams. The scallops were bland, dry and covered with plain bread crumbs. We had to request melted butter to make them flavorful enough to eat after paying $28 per each meal. The ketchup was generic for the fries and gross. We have visited here for two separate occasions. The first we bought seafood from their case. It was quite possibly the best scallops I have ever tasted! So good and so fresh! We also stopped last night for dinner and it was great! I love the added specials and they even cooked it with my modifications. The vegetable of the day was cooked just right. The fish tacos looked great (my husband enjoyed them). The kids chicken nuggets looked yum! Everyone was so nice and quick to clear any empty trays from our table. read more

I appreciated the table service and friendliness of the staff. The large parking lot is great as I imagine this place gets busy with a store front and restaurant. We greatly enjoyed the lobster rolls, clam chowder (so flavorful!), fried shrimp, fish and chips, tartar sauce, the half and half (lemonade and iced tea) was the best without being overly sweet! Anthony's is a place where you go for the food. It has a wide assortment of fresh, reasonably priced seafood for eat-in or take-out, along with seating, both indoors and outdoors. You order and pay at the counter and your meal is delivered to your table. The restaurant is open Thursday thru Sunday. Anthony's also has a seafood market, open Thursday thru Tuesday, I believe. We came here during our trip to Rhode Island for a late lunch one day and ordered the oysters, fishermans platter, a cup of Rhode Island clam chowder and a bottle of half & half. So you basically order your food, and they give you a number to place on your table, and they will find and deliver the food to you, which seems to be common in a lot of restaurants these days. When we placed our order, we got the cup of soup and found a seat outside. From what we noticed, the food comes out as it's ready, so you'll get plates here and there. We ended up getting a second cup of soup that basically was on the house because the server left it before we could say we had already got the one we ordered. We thought the Rhode Island clam chowder with the clear broth was flavorful and had a good amount of potatoes and clams, and it tasted even better because one cup was free. The oysters also tasted fresh. The fishermans platter came with clams, shrimp, scallops, calamari, and we got the cod instead of flounder and everything was fried. Knowing how much good seafood Aquidneck island has, I would imagine that people in the business would be really conscious about the quality of their product and the diner's experience. Unfortunately the hype we heard about Anthony's was far from our experience here. We brought my dad who was visiting from California and was on a one man mission to eat his weight in lobster rolls. When we arrived, we thought there would be a wait, but we ordered at the counter and were seated almost immediately. The interior is kitchy and seafood oriented, with a large poster of the Mayor of Flavortown deeming them to be good. Our food arrived very unceremoniously, with the server plopping them down so hard most of our dished slid across the plates and the chowders sloshed from the cups. I found the chowder to be gross, after I bit into a barely cooked piece of bacon that was still slimy and soft and really colored my experience. The entrees were ok but not great. Dad inhaled his lobster roll but even he said other rolls in the area were better, and even with more lobster for less money. My crab legs were puny, overcooked and frostbitten, and definitely not worth the cost which I thought was ridiculous. Overall, terrible service, little to no ambiance, low quality attention to detail on food and presentation, and seriously, how hard is it to fully cook chowder bacon?! Seriously. Definitely not putting this on our "return to" list, because we can get more and better quality seafood at many other places locally. Will not be returning. read more

There are many seafood options in and around the Newport/Middletown area. But as with most tourist-driven towns, it can be difficult to decide which are actually good and which are tourist traps. We were staying in the Middletown area and had NOT had our seafood fix yet. We knew many popularly reviewed places were back toward the Wharf and did not care to drive in that direction only to drive back (probably hitting traffic both ways). I was glad I googled the area and was able to find Anthony's. It was only about 5 minutes or so from our hotel and they closed at 8 pm on a Friday. I arrived there at about 7 PM ish to grab some take out to bring back to the hotel. The parking lot seemed on the fuller side, but there were still spaces available. I would imagine Friday night would be one of their busier nights. There are some tables and seating outdoor in front of the space. You enter into the seafood market, which was already closed at that time. The market was big and seemed to have (from their price lists and signs) lot of options. You then wait in line (of there is one at the time) for your turn to order. Once you reach the counter, you order whatever you want. They have a variety of seafood items: shrimp, fish, scallops, clam strips, lobster rolls..etc...as well as a variety of beverage (alcoholic and non). Once you order, they will give you a number. You then take that number and sit where you want. You can stay there and eat at an empty table, or take it to go. There are some benches where you can sit and wait for your food but also a few tables around including a separate room, off to the side, with tables and seating. After about 10-15 minutes or so, my food was ready. They currently have a small table off to the side with plastic utensils, straws and napkins. The family was pleasantly surprised when I brought the food back to the hotel...everything was super fresh and tasted great. Perfectly fried, not overdone and well seasoned. I want to mention that all staff there were very efficient. They were hustling to get things done, all while being friendly and patient with customers, which can sometimes be hard to balance. The prices also seemed to be very reasonable compared to other seafood places in the area. I would love to return when the market is opened to get a few things to take home to cook. I highly recommend Anthony for any seafood lover...don't be fooled by the other surrounding tourist traps! Anthony's is the real deal! read more

This is one of those no-frills establishments that gets right to the point; order what you want at the cashier, sit down, and feast on some great food! My friends and I stumbled upon this place and we were all glad that we did. I came in here and do not think too much of it, but once I sat down to eat, the food was so good! I started by sharing some oysters, fried oysters, and getting the Portuguese Fish Chowder and a Stuffie for myself. My favorites were definitely the fish chowder and Stuffie. The fish chowder had a great spicy kick to it and had a nice helping of seafood in it (shrimp, scallops, and cod), along with Chouico! The Stuffie was a stuffed Quahog with clams, chourico, peppers, and various spices. For the main course, I got the Fisherman's Platter which had fried clams, shrimp, scallops, and cod along with french fries. Wow this dish was so filling! Everything was cooked and fried well and a ton of flavor. I could feel my arteries clogging throughout this meal but I survived and the food was worth it! Food prep was a little slow but will chalk that up to the fact that they had just opened and there were like 5 parties in front of us.
