    Lobster Roll

When we want to get a lobster roll this is one of our favorite places to go. They toast a brioche bun and put big chunks of cold lobster and plenty of it in the roll. It's dressed lightly with mayo and celery and lettuce. It's always consistently very good! We wish they were open year round!!

    HUGE, fresh and so gooooood!

All drinks are via vending machine ( Pepsi ) products . The size portions are out of this world and the food is AMAZING! Oh and the Cole slaw is GOOD! Condiments are pre packaged catchup, tartar sauce, ranch, honey mustard and so on. Soooo worth the stop. The woman at the window was so friendly and sweet ...

This is a hidden treasure. WOW! Fun pull up, order and sit at a picnic table vibe. Very New England! We got: Rhodes island clam chowder Clam strips Fried fish Everything was outstanding. Freshest fish ever, clam strips were tender, not chewy, great flavor. The chowder was amazing! It's a non cream based chowder that my family has been making for decades. I would have had ten bowls if I could have. Only down fall was the soda machine and bathroom situation, go potty before! Otherwise Everything was amazing!

Definitely worth a visit! We enjoyed the fish (wow it was massive), clam cakes --actually had small pieces of clam! The R. I. Clear chowder was more refreshing than its heavier creamy cousin. Portuguese stuffies were exactly what you'd expect to get. I met the owner Thomas Robert and he was super friendly and welcoming. always nice to spend your money at small businesses where they treat you right.

This business is less known than it's more famous (and popular "doughboy and clams" up the road a few miles). Shorter lines, shorter short waits, and surprisingly, a very beach like atmosphere. Tommy's offers better value, great seafood platters, and the "holy trinity" of Manhattan, New England, and Rhode Island clam chowders, lobster rolls, fish tacos, and stuffed quahogs. Hot dogs and beef burgers for the carnivores (don't eat them, myself). Well landscaped with canvas tents providing shelter on a graveled lot (no indoor dining) about a hundred feet from the curb of a four lane high way with no natural shade. Soft drinks and water are dispensed from vending machines. Food is served at a window fairly quickly by a friendly staff. A nice stop after hiking around nearby Rocky Point Park on Narragansett Bay.

ORIGIN: Thomas Patrick opened Tommy's Clam Shack in 2013 as an expansion of his three decade long business, Dockside Seafood and Marketplace (opened since 1982), which is located in the neighboring lot. At opening the business was positioned for success with a well-established seafood chef, as well as a reliable stream of fresh fish and shellfish next door. LOCATION: The shack is located on a main thoroughfare and has ample parking and umbrella-shaded outdoor seating. CONCEPT: Tommy's Crab Shack serves a variety of seafood that reflect the culinary traditions of the state. The dishes are customizable (e.g. "extra lemon", "sauce on side") and are prepared for pick up only. SERVICE: Family size orders I have placed during both busy and non-busy times were ready within 20 minutes. EXPERIENCE: After remarking about how busy the shack is for years as my husband drove towards the beach I finally decided to stop and find out why! Although orders can be placed on site, I chose to use the link on the shack's website. It was easy to see and consider the many options this way. I strived to capture a range of dishes in hopes to find a favorite, and ordered clear clam chowder, clam cakes, Portuguese Hushie, hot lobster roll, fish and chips, calamari, and the fried seafood combination. In the end it was impossible to tease out a favorite! My only suggestion is to be sure to add some fresh produce (corn on cob, coleslaw, watermelon) to orders to offset the guilt and sensation of having multiple courses of fried seafood. However, this only kicked in after the second consecutive day of ordering dinner from Tommy's Clam Shack ( : ... Everything was well-prepared, and the prices were a relative bargain compared to water-front seafood restaurants. This resulted in no desire to explore other options. That said, I especially recommend trying their Rhode Island-style chowder as it is not typically available elsewhere. I found that without the mask of cream (New England style) nor tomato (Manhattan-style) the briny flavor of clams was more apparent. The Rhode Island-style calamari, which has sautéed slices of spicy cherry peppers, is also something worth experiencing. TIPS: Ask for sauces to be "on the side" if not dining on site in order to best preserve fried exterior texture. There are many picnic tables ready for customers' use, and the colors of the umbrellas, shack, and signage are evocative of summer in New England, with crisp white, cobalt blue and cherry red standing out against the pale gray shack cladding. Beverages are only sold through a vending machine, and bringing your own is a welcomed option.

Great lobster roll (and pretty reasonably priced compared to other places in the area), they def don't skimp on the lobster which I appreciate. I also liked their clam chowder (good flavor, although clams were a tiny bit gritty).

This review is long overdue! So I took a day trip to Rhode Island last month and this state is known for its seafood! I'm personally not a huge fan of seafood but I love to try good food regardless. I heard of Tommy's clam shack and thought it was worth a try. I arrived mid evening and this place was packed!!! The line never ended even when I finished eating. I ordered the special Tommy trio which consist of half a lobster roll, 3 clam cakes and clam chowder. It was so freaking good. Fresh seafood that tasted amazing. The clam cakes were humongous and super filling. That was my favorite part of the meal. It was worth every penny. Do note that they have beer for sale when ordering your food but if you want a soda for example, there are vending machines to the right. They only accept cash and coins for those machines. When I visit Rhode Island again I know where I'm going!!

Friendly environment- the staff spoke to everyone in line while passing out clam cakes to sample. It seemed like there were a bunch of regulars and the line was long, yet moved swiftly. The New England clam chowder and clam cakes lacked clams. French fries were so-so, and the chicken tenders were mid. Inexpensive, the potion size is enough to make you full and not feel disgusting afterwards- especially being all fried foods. The starting tip option on the keypad started at 18%. Worth at least a one time trip.

Fried seafood platter had the molded frozen fish filets and frozen shrimp, with bay scallops. This is not what they served in the past and definitely disappointing and not worth the price. If you can't get fresh then shouldn't be serving this. I love this place and have had many great meals, never saw anything like this served before.

It was a great night to eat dinner outdoors at Tommy's Clam Shack. We got here a little later than planned, and there was a line, but there were a few picnic tables available to sit at and enjoy dinner. We both ordered appetizers for our meal, which did not come with fries, which was ok because we ordered clam cakes instead. The amount of food in the appetizers were just enough along with the half dozen clam cakes. I had the fried smelts, which next time I would get with the hot peppers (which I do like) on the side. Hubby had the fried shrimp app, with about 18 decent size shrimp! The clam cakes are a nice size, and actually had clams in them!! We brought our own soft drinks, but we have also seen people bring wine, beer, etc. Tommy's also has a collection of alcoholic beverages, or soda and water from the vending machine. Tommy's is so good and worth the stop on a busy road, as opposed to the other famous seafood place on the beach.

Clam cakes were tasty, freshly fried, with lovely crisp skin but not much clam. Asked the nice counter lady to recommend the version of doughboy to try and she suggested original or cinnamon sugar. Selected cinnamon sugar on the side. The original, quite fluffy, was somewhat bland tasting. Dusting with cinnamon sugar elevated both texture and taste. The doughs were light with a beautiful golden brown glow. Rhode Island clear chowder (extra broth) was okay but could be better.

In my opinion, no trip to Oakland Beach is complete without stopping at Iggy's Doughboys & Chowder…read moreHouse. It's become a tradition for us. We usually have dinner next door at the restaurant, and before heading home we walk over to Iggy's to grab a box of fresh doughboys to take with us. Somehow there's always room for doughboys. One of the things I appreciate most is the consistency. It doesn't seem to matter how busy they are, the doughboys are almost always fresh out of the fryer. They're light, golden brown, and cooked just right. I've never had one that was burnt, greasy, or raw in the middle. They strike a nice balance between having a crisp exterior and a soft, fluffy center, and they're generously dusted with enough sugar to satisfy a sweet tooth without making a complete mess. The menu has plenty of classic Rhode Island favorites if you're looking for chowder, clam cakes, or other seafood, but for us it's always about the doughboys. They've become part of the ritual whenever we're at Oakland Beach, and it's one tradition we don't plan on changing anytime soon. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is because this place is incredibly popular, especially during the warmer months. Depending on when you go, you may find yourself standing in line for a while. That's not necessarily a knock on the business because a busy restaurant usually says something about its reputation, but it's worth knowing if you're in a hurry. The prices are fair, the staff keeps the line moving as efficiently as they can, and the quality has remained remarkably consistent over the years. That's becoming increasingly rare. If you're spending the day at Oakland Beach and leave without stopping at Iggy's for doughboys, I think you're missing out on one of the area's best traditions. We'll definitely keep coming back.

We definitely will not be coming back. The Food: Lobster Bisque: Truly tragic and disappointing. It was essentially a bowl of flavorless orange soup with just one single, flimsy piece of lobster in it. Sticky Calamari: Completely missed the mark. The calamari itself was undercooked and served covered in a sugary mixture that lacked any depth. It was surprisingly bland despite the sauce. Raw Platters: We ordered two separate raw platters, but the kitchen combined everything onto one single platter without telling us. Because no staff member communicated this when dropping off the food, one person ate the entire platter assuming it was just theirs. The Service: The lack of communication was the biggest issue of the night. After our waitress took our initial order, she vanished. She never came back to check on our table, offer drink refills, or see how the food was. The plates were simply dropped at the table with zero follow-up. The only time she finally asked if we enjoyed our meal was when it was time for us to pack up and leave. The decor was simple for EG but very tight. Overall, a 2 out of 5 across the board. Between the mismanaged food, lack of flavor, and absent service, it wasn't worth it.
