What a fun place as long as you don't mind waiting in line. We got lucky on a Wed night after an early dinner at Pacifica, we stopped by and there was no line. The service here is excellent. They give you a sample of all the flavors and it was so fun to try everything. I opted for a large cup, half pistachio and half white chocolate swirl. It was a bit sweeter than I expected but it was excellent still.
Finally went to one of An's Hatmakers locations in SD! I heard and read about them and they are such a hype and it's hard for me to check them out since I don't live locally. We were in the area and walked down to An's after a late lunch/early dinner. The staff were super friendly and each of them repeat the same lengthy descriptive menu of the day for everyone with genuine enthusiasm. Kudos for all of them! I forgot what I got now since it was at least a month ago that we went there but I just know we were so satisfied! My suggestion is to go with the staff's suggestion! lol
An's holds the title of the top gelato spot in America for a reason! This location specifically in Del Mar is a hat themed shop with a lot of random and quirky hat decor. Wifey and I finally got to try the new sorbet flavors they have: the Ngob (Mango) and the McAllen (Strawberry Grapefruit). I really enjoyed both of these flavors and they were so refreshing for the summer!
Well shoooot I might like Gelato now. Definitely the best Gelato I've had. The line wasnt too crazy when we got there (get ~45min before sunset then walk to the park cause after its looooong) and one scooper was moving it along fast while still doing the tour which was appreciated. Downside is the Gelato places around me aren't this good so still deferring to ice cream. Shout out to the random person on the bus that randomly found us approachable to start talking about all his fav food places and recommended this place (along with some others that held up). Ill call him the 101 foodie. Also they dont make hats from what I saw but they do have ones you can try on while in line once inside.

This place is super super cute and is by the same people as An's Dry Cleaning and An's Electronics! I absolutely love that they have their flavor tour which is where they give you a sample of every flavor they have. They also have very unique flavors and change it up every few weeks. My favorite flavor they had was when they had their Matcha collab with Paru Tea, and I believe they still bring the matcha flavor back sometimes! They definitely get really busy on the weekends (1-2 hour wait) so I recommend going on a weekday where I only had to wait 10 minutes! The pricing is a little pricy, but not too bad, especially for the quality and service they provide! I also definitely recommend going to their other stores too as they are all different themes. Free 1 hour parking garage!
Spent an amazing weekend in Del Mar. The scenery, the people, the seafood made for a true getaway. After dinner we naturally started to think about something sweet to cap off the night. Found An's nearby, but when we walked over there was a line down the street, so we decided to come back the next day. We came back the next day after lunch and there was nobody in line! The setup here is different than other ice cream / gelato shops. Here they have a limited selection of flavors that they change every few weeks, and it's customary for them to give you a taste and explanation of each one before ordering, similar to a wine tasting. After the tasting they ask you to choose 2 flavors. I don't remember the flavor names, but they're named after iconic hats. I had a flavor that had mango and passion fruit mixed with a flavor that tasted straight out of a See's candy box. Wife had a super dark chocolate with matcha. All I can say are the boldness of flavors they achieve here can only be done thru using the highest of quality ingredients. Truly remarkable their flavors. They are extremely indulgent without being too rich, hard to explain but each bite was so addictive. We can't wait to return to Del Mar and bring the whole family (and dogs) next time, and An's will be a must visit on that trip. True 5 star, must try spot. (Sorry about the messy half eaten pics...)
One of my favorite Gelato shops in SD! Although it's a sister location to An's Dry Cleaning, the line is a lot shorter, especially if you go right when it opens. I love how the staff does flavor tours, where you get to sample and hear about each flavor before you order. I got a large double scoop of the leather (chocolate chip cookie) and visor (pistachio) and loved how nutty visor was. I would recommend pairing nutty visor with cypress if you're interested in a dark dubai chocolate note. This shop is close to the beach, but there is a paid garage attached to the plaza. If you are willing to walk, there is street parking in the vicinity.
The lore of these An's gelato spots is so cool - love that they really pay homage to the previous business and that it's embedded in the store name, decor, and flavor names. Their gelato is truly the best I've had in my life - dare I say, I enjoyed this more than the gelato I had in Italy. The ceremonial strawberry matcha flavor was DIVINE if you're a matcha lover. Such strong pure matcha flavor, just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The strawberry jam is homemade. The strawberry sorbet was strawberry galore - 6 lbs strawberries per batch. I love that they let every customer do the flavour tour. It does crank up the line times but it's worth it. Also, it's only a long line if you catch them at a busy time like weekends or after work. This place was so good we came back 3 times on our 1 week trip here. Not to mention, the staff is SO nice!
Love this place. Always a great experience. The teenagers working there are always so well mannered and do a great job with their tour sample. I got the power supply (coffee, dulce leche, cinnamon) and leather ( brown butter chocolate chip cookies). Small size is more than enough ice cream for me. So delicious!
My co-residents and I knew that we had to stop by one of An's ice cream shops before leaving SD and I am so glad we did because this was the best gelato I've ever had. The experience was overall just so fun too because we were literally able to sample every flavor before ordering and they were all so good that it was hard to decide. The workers were so sweet and chatty and overall just added to the positive experience! There's a few tables inside and I absolutely LOVED their decorations!! There were so many hats all around and it was such a cute concept. For the gelato, I decided to get a small with the flavors Leather and Cypress. The Leather was a brown butter flavor with chocolate chips and I was so impressed. It was soo rich and so addicting that I bought a pint of it to bring home, even though I lived a 2 hour drive away. The Cypress was a super rich chocolate flavor which I also loved! The slight bitterness was a great contrast to the sweetness of the Leather. I was so addicted and would definitely recommend this place!
What to say about this place that hasn't already been said... the ice cream is so amazing and the joy of trying all the flavors is always so fun. This place is always worth coming back because they have so many flavors and all of them have their own unique texture and profile. They make ice cream an art here. The parking situation isn't so good but the structure it's located in offers free parking for up to an hour. Pro tip to skip the line get a pint and enjoy it down by the water or up the stairs to the left of the storefront for an ocean view!!!!!
What a cute gelato store! Loved the wall of hats and the vintage sewing machine. The best part was the flavor tour. Once you get there they offer a tasting of every flavor which is genius imo. You get a chance to try everything and it's such a nice touch instead of asking to sample a few at a time. We really enjoyed the mango flavor and another one that tasted like cookies and cream.

I'm a big fan of An's but I had only ever been to their Dry Cleaning location. I was in the Del Mar area and had to make a stop to the Hatmaker location! I've fallen even more in love with An's - the barrier of a 30-45 min long line at the Dry Cleaning location doesn't exist here!! It was truly amazing to walk in the store and walk right up to the counter (went on a sunday afternoon around 12:30pm) The flavors, as always, were all bangers - I got the Minky (coconut + pineapple sorbet) and the Visor (pistachio). I usually don't go for pistachio, but the Visor was actually so good - they even include whole bits of roasted pistachio! Continuously impressed by the quality and creativity of An's - it's no surprise they're #1. Free parking up to an hour in the garage, or find street parking. read more

I Never had a Gelato Tour! And this was the Best Experience Ever!! I love the decorations ! And the energy this place gives! Makes the experience 10 times better!! The customer service is the Best!! Now i understand the long line and the wait! I hate making lines lol but for a Gelato Tour Experience !! I will make a line any day lol i had the Carbon Fiber and it was Delicious!! My daughters had the Vanilla Flavor and even that was Amazing!!! Love it! I will totally come here again and recommend this to everyone ! read more

OH MY GOSH THE PISTACHIO 10/10 THANK YOU FOE THIS that was the best pistachio gelato ive ever had. i appreciate that this place lets you try every flavor available, because i wasn't sure what to get at first. the small cup allows for two flavors but i still got a full scoop of just pistachio haha. the pineapple/coconut flavor was also delicious! the only reason i didn't get that flavor too was because i recently ate a lot of pineapple and coconut flavored things haha great ambiance too on a super pretty street with nice stores and restaurants. can't wait to come back read more

This ice cream shop is located in a cute shopping complex near the water. Upon opening the door, the wafts of buttery waffle cone aroma fill the air. When we got up to the counter, Marie offered us a flavor tour where she walked thru each of the flavors, their ingredients and gave us a sample. It was very informative and the ice cream was delicious! I ended up with the Coppola ans the California Surf ones in a waffle cone. It was delicious!! Delicious gelatos! I love their attire theme and how they individually give you a flavor tour, allowing you to try everything before buying. All the flavors I had were amazing so it's hard to choose but in the end went with Chocolate and the Coconut Passionfruit. The Pistachio one would have been my next pick. Yay! As a San Diego local, I can't believe it took me THIS long to finally try An's Hatmakers! I kept hearing about the fun tasting experience, so I'm happy to have my own experiences to report on, now! I went on a weekend evening after dinnertime. Surprisingly, there was no line, just one group ahead of us! I suppose we got lucky. (After we left, there was a line that had formed.) There were seats inside and outside, though it was a bit chilly to eat gelato outdoors. The inside was very cutely decorated!! In true An's Hatmakers fashion, we were given a sampling tour of the different gelato flavors they had on rotation. This included fascinator (strawberry), 100% paper (coconut, orange, passionfruit), beret (vanilla, white chocolate, caramel), tweed (tres leches), coppola (cream, Nutella, cookies), visor (pistachio), and cypress (midnight chocolate). In my opinion, the fascinator was fresh, fruity, and undeniably strawberry. A very light-tasting option. Meanwhile, the visor had an unexpectedly pleasant pistachio flavor. Although I don't usually like pistachio, this was in my top 2 of the night! It wasn't overpowering or artificial at all. On the other hand, cypress was rather disappointing; it tastes like undercooked brownie batter, but I suppose that appeals to some crowds!! I also enjoyed the coppola, which was admittedly very sweet but somewhat unique. The gelato flavors were definitely fun and different! The quality was good, but it's not as creamy as I was hoping it would be (of course, it's not ice cream). As such, I think what makes An's unique is its selection of flavors. For the price, I don't know if I can justify coming back very often, but I do think it's a great option for a little sweet treat every once in a while! read more
I first discovered this place through an instagram post advertising their "pho" flavor - unfortunately they don't have it anymore but their other flavors looked really good so I still really wanted to try it! Each flavor is named after different types of hats and the shop is decorated with hats as well. Before ordering, we were offered a "flavor tour," which is basically a sampling of every flavor they currently offer. I really loved this because I'm a super indecisive person but I'm also often too shy to ask for samples. Every flavor was very rich and delicious. I opted for the denim (banana & caramel) and cotton (rice pudding), but I also really liked the visor (roasted pistachio). I will say it is a bit pricey especially for the small cup, but the quality of the gelato is worth it. read more

So happy its here in delmar. Tried An's laundry on Adams ave and loved it. Its a small place but very well decorated. The name speaks it all. They have 3 sizes to choose from and can buy wafer cone separately too if getting a cup. Flavours are very interesting and described well so its easy to choose from. You can get a sample to try too. Its so creamy and flavorful. Servers are very patient and polite. I had jesters cap. Kids loved beret. read more

I got the Beanie with Nutella and banana pudding--you can actually see and taste the banana pudding, big chunks and all. The shop is small with just a couple tables, but the server was super friendly and let us sample everything. Definitely worth a stop! read more

We tried the Mixmaster (salted butter, cinnamon & vanilla), Leather (brown butter & chocolate chip cookies), Cypress (Midnight Coco) and Sagada (ube & coconut caramel). Loved each and every one of them. The staff let us try all the flavors. Rich, creamy, and packed with flavor without being overly sweet. Loved the ambience too. An's Hatmakers is a nice small shop for a delicious treat. It is in a former hat store so they have decorations of hats around the inside. It's not like a Lid's it's an old school hat store so think like The Kingsman. They allow you to sample all of the flavors as a tasting flight which is awesome. Phenomenal experience and the flavors are rich and it's a flavor explosion for the taste buds. read more

The wait for the place was insane. I wish they had a bigger location with more seating inside and space. The staff is super nice. It was our first time so they explained how they always switch the flavors every so often and even let us try each flavor as a sample. I did enjoy the flavors although it was weird to mix a fruity flavor with a sweet chocolate one. I love the concept of how they took on the theme of the previous owner and even contributed the interior to it. read more

An's is great! But the line is no joke and I had to wait around an hour. The flavor tour is a nice touch, the staff are friendly, and the decor is pretty charming. Flavors rotate frequently... this time, I had the mango passionfruit sorbet and the matcha strawberry gelato. Both were very solid with bright, refreshing fruit notes in the sorbet and a good balance of matcha with subtle strawberry in the gelato. read more

An's Hat Makers is a fun, kitschy stop - especially for the experience. We went on a Sunday around 2pm and ended up waiting about 30 minutes. The service and the whole guided tasting/food tour aspect were absolutely 5-star: super friendly, organized, and genuinely enthusiastic about walking you through every flavor. Flavor-wise, everything was good and thoughtfully made, but the texture just wasn't my personal favorite. I've had better ice cream and gelato elsewhere, so while nothing was bad, it didn't totally wow me on that front. That said, it is a really unique experience - being able to try every flavor is fun, and the storytelling and vibe make it memorable. Worth checking out if you're curious or want something different, but for me, it's probably not worth a long wait if you're just craving top-tier ice cream. read more

If this business sounds familiar, that's because it is! Most San Diegans are no stranger to An's Dry Cleaning- they were named the Best Independent Ice Cream Shop in America! Well, this is their sister location and instead of posing as a dry cleaning business, they're venturing out as hat makers. Oh An's, you're so silly and we're all eating it up (literally)! An's Hatmakers debuts new flavors seasonally. If you're visiting for the first time (or the nth time), don't be shy and ask for their tour of flavors! They're never stingy with their samples. During this particular visit, we went with the Bobblehat (Strawberry Banana Sorbet) and the Coppola (Vanilla + Nutella Chocolate Cookie). Bobblehat tasted exactly like a creamy strawberry banana smoothie- you can really tell that they used real fruit! Coppola was just as delicious as it sounds- a classic combo! Came on a thursday evening & waiting quite awhile in line.. people will take their time trying flavors. We ended up leaving the line & just grabbing 2 pints without tasting. We got the browned butter & cookie, & the cookies & cream with nutella. The browned butter & cookie blew us away. I will dream about it. So so good, perfect ratio of cookie add ins. I've gone to the An's Dry Cleaning on Adams Avenue and still haven't tried the Hatmakers location in Del Mar. I finally got the chance to on one of the times I was in the area. There was no line when my group and I came in and we ended up sampling all of the flavors that they had. I normally go for the seasonal flavors, but decided to get the Coppola, which had bits of cookie and Nutella in it. The portions here are pretty huge and the gelato is great. It's a different vibe from the one on Adams, which I thought was pretty neat. I recommend this spot if you are in Del Mar and looking for a spot for ice cream. Parking is free for 90 minutes I believe if you dine within the plaza. read more

Before my visit here, I had only ever been to the other location, An's Dry Cleaning. My friend told me about this location, and I was curious about how the quality and service would stack up. I'm glad to say that I had an even better experience here than at the other location! - There is a parking garage and you get 1 hour free! - Not as busy - Staff is just as welcoming and we also had a flavor "tour" - Delicious, smooth gelato that is definitely above competitors in my opinion Overall, I think I will be going to this location from now on. The menu does differ between this one and An's Dry Cleaning so be sure to do your research before visiting to see which flavors you'd prefer to have available. read more

Deserves each and every one of these five stars. What sets An's Hatmakers apart, though, is their location and service. It's a five minute walk to Del Mar beach, an absolutely stunning, cover-worthy place to be. The service is incredible, as I've revisited several times and every worker I've encountered is equally warm and welcoming. Every An's location allows each customer a flavor tour where you can try each flavor, which is SO fun. They have a rotating menu with some permanent flavors, my favorite being Leather (for all of the cookies & cream, cookie dough lovers). Also, during Christmas time, they go all out with decorations which warms my heart as a Christmas fanatic. This ice cream shop is the epitome of the San Diego experience, and is sure to make your day better. Ps the cones are absolutely delish! read more

Sooo good! This is the Del Mar location. It inside of a small shopping complex and there is parking in the back, first hour is free! There is a nice variety of flavors and they let you sample all of them! The staff is very friendly and gives you some info about each of the flavors. I ended up getting the roasted pistachio and the rice/milk/cinnamon flavor. This is honestly probably one of my favorite pistachio flavors I had there are chunks of pistachio and it and they told us that they roast the pistachios there! Combined with my other flavor was sooo good. There was a line when we went but it goes fast. They also sell hats which are on display inside! read more
