Love this place. Always a great experience. The teenagers working there are always so well mannered and do a great job with their tour sample. I got the power supply (coffee, dulce leche, cinnamon) and leather ( brown butter chocolate chip cookies). Small size is more than enough ice cream for me. So delicious!
Spent an amazing weekend in Del Mar. The scenery, the people, the seafood made for a true getaway. After dinner we naturally started to think about something sweet to cap off the night. Found An's nearby, but when we walked over there was a line down the street, so we decided to come back the next day. We came back the next day after lunch and there was nobody in line! The setup here is different than other ice cream / gelato shops. Here they have a limited selection of flavors that they change every few weeks, and it's customary for them to give you a taste and explanation of each one before ordering, similar to a wine tasting. After the tasting they ask you to choose 2 flavors. I don't remember the flavor names, but they're named after iconic hats. I had a flavor that had mango and passion fruit mixed with a flavor that tasted straight out of a See's candy box. Wife had a super dark chocolate with matcha. All I can say are the boldness of flavors they achieve here can only be done thru using the highest of quality ingredients. Truly remarkable their flavors. They are extremely indulgent without being too rich, hard to explain but each bite was so addictive. We can't wait to return to Del Mar and bring the whole family (and dogs) next time, and An's will be a must visit on that trip. True 5 star, must try spot. (Sorry about the messy half eaten pics...)
One of my favorite Gelato shops in SD! Although it's a sister location to An's Dry Cleaning, the line is a lot shorter, especially if you go right when it opens. I love how the staff does flavor tours, where you get to sample and hear about each flavor before you order. I got a large double scoop of the leather (chocolate chip cookie) and visor (pistachio) and loved how nutty visor was. I would recommend pairing nutty visor with cypress if you're interested in a dark dubai chocolate note. This shop is close to the beach, but there is a paid garage attached to the plaza. If you are willing to walk, there is street parking in the vicinity.
The lore of these An's gelato spots is so cool - love that they really pay homage to the previous business and that it's embedded in the store name, decor, and flavor names. Their gelato is truly the best I've had in my life - dare I say, I enjoyed this more than the gelato I had in Italy. The ceremonial strawberry matcha flavor was DIVINE if you're a matcha lover. Such strong pure matcha flavor, just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The strawberry jam is homemade. The strawberry sorbet was strawberry galore - 6 lbs strawberries per batch. I love that they let every customer do the flavour tour. It does crank up the line times but it's worth it. Also, it's only a long line if you catch them at a busy time like weekends or after work. This place was so good we came back 3 times on our 1 week trip here. Not to mention, the staff is SO nice!

My co-residents and I knew that we had to stop by one of An's ice cream shops before leaving SD and I am so glad we did because this was the best gelato I've ever had. The experience was overall just so fun too because we were literally able to sample every flavor before ordering and they were all so good that it was hard to decide. The workers were so sweet and chatty and overall just added to the positive experience! There's a few tables inside and I absolutely LOVED their decorations!! There were so many hats all around and it was such a cute concept. For the gelato, I decided to get a small with the flavors Leather and Cypress. The Leather was a brown butter flavor with chocolate chips and I was so impressed. It was soo rich and so addicting that I bought a pint of it to bring home, even though I lived a 2 hour drive away. The Cypress was a super rich chocolate flavor which I also loved! The slight bitterness was a great contrast to the sweetness of the Leather. I was so addicted and would definitely recommend this place!
We really enjoyed our visit to An's Hatmakers while we were in the area. First off, we went on a weekday so there weren't any lines. The staff who took us on our "flavor tour" was very energetic, friendly, and knowledgeable of the menu. We ended up selecting their Mixmaster (vanilla, cinnamon, salted butter) and Leather (brown butter, cookies) flavors. We love a good sweet/salty moment so these flavors were right up our alley. We found parking in the paid garage behind the shop, and we'd definitely return for some tasty gelato!
this place has been on my bucket list for so long since i saw that an's dry cleaning was voted as the #1 ice cream shop in america, and i definitely think that this shop lived up to the hype! i also love a good ice cream shop that does fusion flavors well, and this one hit all of my expectations. the workers here are super sweet and patient! every party that comes in is allowed to sample all of the available flavors without having to ask individually, and i loved the concept since i was able to try all that they had. i ended up choosing the sagada (ube & coconut caramel) and leather (brown butter & chocolate chip cookie) in a waffle cone, and this was SO yummy !! the gelato is extremely smooth and not too sweet, and the flavors i got meshed well together. my friends and i all really loved the leather flavor and even bought a pint to-go! the workers also PACKED my cone and made sure i got my money's worth hehe. i want to definitely visit the other shops if i'm ever in san diego again!
Hands down the best gelato in San Diego, and maybe even America. The flavors are super unique and all created from scratch. There's 3 An's locations but this is my favorite because of the outdoor seating options. It's has an adorable little patio in the front with shaded tables. The employees are all very knowledgeable and friendly.
I had mentioned to my bf that I was in the mood for something sweet to end our night. We headed downstairs of the plaza and he immediately pointed out this gelato shop and informed me that the line has been non stop out the door since we arrived to the plaza for happy hour. I figured it must be good so I took a shot on it. I was surprised to hear my bf wanted to try as well since he isn't much of a desserts person, so that's saying something! Although the line was out the door, I'd say we only waited about 10 minutes. We did notice the line growing even more so as we inched closer to ordering and upon our departure. It's super cold inside! They've got the AC blowing at 60 degrees, but for fair reason. Not much seating is available inside, but what they do have is great for two or three couples and slightly larger group. There are a couple of tables right out front as well. You can also find a stand up fridge with ready to go pints if you're interested in more volume or a shorter wait time! The lovely young lady asked if it was our first time visiting so she offered us their tasting flight of all the flavors. Even their cleansing palette flavor was delicious (tasted similar to a mint mojito). Everything was so tasty, it's hard to have a favorite. But I was happy to know you can get 2 flavors, no matter the size ordered!! What we ordered: Large Cup of Straw Hat (5/5) - this flavor will be the mango and passion fruit. She offered to top it off with tajin, so how could we decline?! It was beyond fresh and juicy of a flavor. Not too icy, the consistency was beautiful. It really was a delightful treat for the transitioning weather. Complimented the sunset well. Small Cup of Leather and Visor (5/5) - leather is supposed to be a brown butter + chocolate chip cookie flavor while the visor is a roasted pistachio. It practically melts together and gives a balanced nutty, malty, yet creamy experience. The chunks of cookie in the leather just elevated each bite and adds that desired texture. I liked that the cookie bits inside weren't all uniform. Honestly I feel like any of the flavors would pair nicely together. They are not overly sweet, it's pretty natural and subtle. Definitely a play on your ordinary flavors though, which I could appreciate. For example, they have a cookies n cream but they added Nutella. The vanilla flavor includes cinnamon and salted butter. The Dubai chocolate was definitely more chocolate forward and rich, but such a solid flavor that you can't go wrong. Overall, this spot is definitely worth the wait. I feel like they have an option for everyone and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. I'd definitely return and absolutely recommend to others. What a perfect way to enjoy a yummy treat being right across the ocean. FYI: small cup was $6.65 and large $7.75 but keep in mind you're allowed 2 flavors for any size!
I've been going to An's for the past few years during my time in San Diego, and they have rightfully earned the title of #1 Gelato in the country. Every new flavor they create is a hit, even if it's not to my personal tastes. I love the flavor tour that they do for everyone who walks in through the door, automatically letting everyone try every single flavor that they're offering for the week/month. Each An's location has a different theme, and it's cute every time. Del Mar's location is the best, in my opinion, for the close beach view that's a 5ish minute walk away and the fact that there's a free parking garage down the block (assuming you're there less than an hr). I have yet to try a flavor that doesn't taste good, and they're worth the wait.
We were visiting from norcal and were recommended to check out An's and definitely werent disappointed. I love the fun unique flavors mixed with some regular flavors too. The fact that they make u try all of the flavors is also nice (though it does probably make the line a bit longer). We waited probably 45 minutes on a Saturday night. The prices are typical for ice cream as are the portion sizes. Also the ambiance of the store with the hats on the side is super fun as are the names of the ice cream flavors that are hat related.
I have been meaning to try An's for a minute, but the times have never aligned. We ended up going around dinner time on a Sunday, and the crowds were insane.. we waited like an hour until we made it inside. There are two types of parking - you can either park in the structure (paid) or use the 20 minute street parking on the side. I wouldn't say it was worth an hour wait, but it was certainly worth the experience. They take time to curate your experience and help you find something you enjoy through the flavor flight that they offer. And bonus, everything is hat themed! Absolutely obsessed with the pistachio visor flavor - I haven't had anything like it, and I'm still dreaming about it. I need the other locations on my passport ASAP! P.S. there are these nice high chairs up the stairs where you can enjoy your ice cream and look out into the ocean views.
So happy its here in delmar. Tried An's laundry on Adams ave and loved it. Its a small place but very well decorated. The name speaks it all. They have 3 sizes to choose from and can buy wafer cone separately too if getting a cup. Flavours are very interesting and described well so its easy to choose from. You can get a sample to try too. Its so creamy and flavorful. Servers are very patient and polite. I had jesters cap. Kids loved beret. read more

I got the Beanie with Nutella and banana pudding--you can actually see and taste the banana pudding, big chunks and all. The shop is small with just a couple tables, but the server was super friendly and let us sample everything. Definitely worth a stop! read more

Came on a thursday evening & waiting quite awhile in line.. people will take their time trying flavors. We ended up leaving the line & just grabbing 2 pints without tasting. We got the browned butter & cookie, & the cookies & cream with nutella. The browned butter & cookie blew us away. I will dream about it. So so good, perfect ratio of cookie add ins. An's Hatmakers is a nice small shop for a delicious treat. It is in a former hat store so they have decorations of hats around the inside. It's not like a Lid's it's an old school hat store so think like The Kingsman. They allow you to sample all of the flavors as a tasting flight which is awesome. Phenomenal experience and the flavors are rich and it's a flavor explosion for the taste buds. read more

The wait for the place was insane. I wish they had a bigger location with more seating inside and space. The staff is super nice. It was our first time so they explained how they always switch the flavors every so often and even let us try each flavor as a sample. I did enjoy the flavors although it was weird to mix a fruity flavor with a sweet chocolate one. I love the concept of how they took on the theme of the previous owner and even contributed the interior to it. read more

An's is great! But the line is no joke and I had to wait around an hour. The flavor tour is a nice touch, the staff are friendly, and the decor is pretty charming. Flavors rotate frequently... this time, I had the mango passionfruit sorbet and the matcha strawberry gelato. Both were very solid with bright, refreshing fruit notes in the sorbet and a good balance of matcha with subtle strawberry in the gelato. read more

An's Hat Makers is a fun, kitschy stop - especially for the experience. We went on a Sunday around 2pm and ended up waiting about 30 minutes. The service and the whole guided tasting/food tour aspect were absolutely 5-star: super friendly, organized, and genuinely enthusiastic about walking you through every flavor. Flavor-wise, everything was good and thoughtfully made, but the texture just wasn't my personal favorite. I've had better ice cream and gelato elsewhere, so while nothing was bad, it didn't totally wow me on that front. That said, it is a really unique experience - being able to try every flavor is fun, and the storytelling and vibe make it memorable. Worth checking out if you're curious or want something different, but for me, it's probably not worth a long wait if you're just craving top-tier ice cream. read more

If this business sounds familiar, that's because it is! Most San Diegans are no stranger to An's Dry Cleaning- they were named the Best Independent Ice Cream Shop in America! Well, this is their sister location and instead of posing as a dry cleaning business, they're venturing out as hat makers. Oh An's, you're so silly and we're all eating it up (literally)! An's Hatmakers debuts new flavors seasonally. If you're visiting for the first time (or the nth time), don't be shy and ask for their tour of flavors! They're never stingy with their samples. During this particular visit, we went with the Bobblehat (Strawberry Banana Sorbet) and the Coppola (Vanilla + Nutella Chocolate Cookie). Bobblehat tasted exactly like a creamy strawberry banana smoothie- you can really tell that they used real fruit! Coppola was just as delicious as it sounds- a classic combo! An's truly never disappoints. read more

I've gone to the An's Dry Cleaning on Adams Avenue and still haven't tried the Hatmakers location in Del Mar. I finally got the chance to on one of the times I was in the area. There was no line when my group and I came in and we ended up sampling all of the flavors that they had. I normally go for the seasonal flavors, but decided to get the Coppola, which had bits of cookie and Nutella in it. The portions here are pretty huge and the gelato is great. It's a different vibe from the one on Adams, which I thought was pretty neat. I recommend this spot if you are in Del Mar and looking for a spot for ice cream. Parking is free for 90 minutes I believe if you dine within the plaza. read more

Before my visit here, I had only ever been to the other location, An's Dry Cleaning. My friend told me about this location, and I was curious about how the quality and service would stack up. I'm glad to say that I had an even better experience here than at the other location! - There is a parking garage and you get 1 hour free! - Not as busy - Staff is just as welcoming and we also had a flavor "tour" - Delicious, smooth gelato that is definitely above competitors in my opinion Overall, I think I will be going to this location from now on. The menu does differ between this one and An's Dry Cleaning so be sure to do your research before visiting to see which flavors you'd prefer to have available. read more

Deserves each and every one of these five stars. What sets An's Hatmakers apart, though, is their location and service. It's a five minute walk to Del Mar beach, an absolutely stunning, cover-worthy place to be. The service is incredible, as I've revisited several times and every worker I've encountered is equally warm and welcoming. Every An's location allows each customer a flavor tour where you can try each flavor, which is SO fun. They have a rotating menu with some permanent flavors, my favorite being Leather (for all of the cookies & cream, cookie dough lovers). Also, during Christmas time, they go all out with decorations which warms my heart as a Christmas fanatic. This ice cream shop is the epitome of the San Diego experience, and is sure to make your day better. Ps the cones are absolutely delish! read more

Sooo good! This is the Del Mar location. It inside of a small shopping complex and there is parking in the back, first hour is free! There is a nice variety of flavors and they let you sample all of them! The staff is very friendly and gives you some info about each of the flavors. I ended up getting the roasted pistachio and the rice/milk/cinnamon flavor. This is honestly probably one of my favorite pistachio flavors I had there are chunks of pistachio and it and they told us that they roast the pistachios there! Combined with my other flavor was sooo good. There was a line when we went but it goes fast. They also sell hats which are on display inside! read more

There was a fairly long line that extended outside the shop, but it moved quickly. When we got to the counter, we were greeted by Emily. She was very upbeat and friendly right away. We asked for two samples and then she asked if we had ever been there before when we told her we had not, she then offered us a flavor flight. The palate cleanser to start was delicious! I could eat just a bowl of it! All of the flavors were delicious, and Emily gave great descriptions of each as she gave us the samples. I decided on a small with 2 flavors Minky which was a refreshing coconut/pineapple and also Beret which is vanilla, white chocolate, and caramel. The little shop is adorable love the hats on display. There are a few tables inside and also a few outside with umbrellas. Great location, limited street parking but the Plaza does have a parking garage on the block. read more

Another 5 star experience in the books! I was in the area and had to make a stop at my favorite gelato shop. Service was amazing as usual and the line wasn't too bad. I went around 5pm on a Saturday and waited about 15 minutes. I got their strawberry lemon and their palette cleanser. They complemented each other very well and it was so refreshing on a warm summer day. I love it here! read more

Award-winning and worthy of the hype! It's not just gelato, it's an experience! We came in on a Saturday afternoon and didn't have to wait at all. I had looked at the menu and had picked out what flavor I wanted, but we did the samples and I changed my mind. Make sure you try all the flavors as well. They do them in a certain order and the server explained everything so well. It's obvious that the people who work here love their job and are proud of their products. The shop was adorable. I've been to the original An's Dry Cleaning, and I can't wait to check out their newest location in OB. read more

What a cute concept for gelato! Seating is outside and you cant ask for anything better than eating gelato while staring at the ocean. I came on a holiday weekend so there was a long line. I was able to sample a few flavors before deciding on the fascinator and paper combination. It was good but not as good as gelato in Europe. :p also kinda pricy but I guess you pay for the experience. read more
