I had mentioned to my bf that I was in the mood for something sweet to end our night. We headed downstairs of the plaza and he immediately pointed out this gelato shop and informed me that the line has been non stop out the door since we arrived to the plaza for happy hour. I figured it must be good so I took a shot on it. I was surprised to hear my bf wanted to try as well since he isn't much of a desserts person, so that's saying something! Although the line was out the door, I'd say we only waited about 10 minutes. We did notice the line growing even more so as we inched closer to ordering and upon our departure. It's super cold inside! They've got the AC blowing at 60 degrees, but for fair reason. Not much seating is available inside, but what they do have is great for two or three couples and slightly larger group. There are a couple of tables right out front as well. You can also find a stand up fridge with ready to go pints if you're interested in more volume or a shorter wait time! The lovely young lady asked if it was our first time visiting so she offered us their tasting flight of all the flavors. Even their cleansing palette flavor was delicious (tasted similar to a mint mojito). Everything was so tasty, it's hard to have a favorite. But I was happy to know you can get 2 flavors, no matter the size ordered!! What we ordered: Large Cup of Straw Hat (5/5) - this flavor will be the mango and passion fruit. She offered to top it off with tajin, so how could we decline?! It was beyond fresh and juicy of a flavor. Not too icy, the consistency was beautiful. It really was a delightful treat for the transitioning weather. Complimented the sunset well. Small Cup of Leather and Visor (5/5) - leather is supposed to be a brown butter + chocolate chip cookie flavor while the visor is a roasted pistachio. It practically melts together and gives a balanced nutty, malty, yet creamy experience. The chunks of cookie in the leather just elevated each bite and adds that desired texture. I liked that the cookie bits inside weren't all uniform. Honestly I feel like any of the flavors would pair nicely together. They are not overly sweet, it's pretty natural and subtle. Definitely a play on your ordinary flavors though, which I could appreciate. For example, they have a cookies n cream but they added Nutella. The vanilla flavor includes cinnamon and salted butter. The Dubai chocolate was definitely more chocolate forward and rich, but such a solid flavor that you can't go wrong. Overall, this spot is definitely worth the wait. I feel like they have an option for everyone and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. I'd definitely return and absolutely recommend to others. A delicious gelato spot with great service, but be prepared to wait! They have unique flavor names that are all hatmaker themed, and they are constantly rotating. Before we ordered our gelato, the worker gave us a tour of all the flavors and their descriptions, allowing us to sample each one before choosing. While the process definitely makes the line longer, I really enjoyed trying all the flavors. I ended up picking the straw hat flavor, which was a mango passionfruit sorbet that was refreshingly tart. I came on a Sunday afternoon, and we had to wait in line for around 45 minutes. I wish there were more shaded areas on the sidewalk where the line was. They were excited before we even walked in because this place is known for having lines out the door and has been voted the #1 ice cream/gelato shop in America two years in a row. And I have to call this out because I loved it... they use real metal spoons for the tastings instead of plastic. I'm so glad I finally got to try this award winning place! The hat shop was so cute, the workers were very kind and friendly, and the little plaza it's a part of is so beautiful on a sunny day! The small is a little over $7 which is pricey but they do give a fair amount and it's a good way to treat yourself! The Kasa flavor was really great--the strawberry ice cream had a perfect tartness to it and the matcha cake had a deep matcha flavor and wasn't too dry! But the broken heart brocade was even better! Yummy visit! Came with a group and we all tasted the flight of monthly flavors before deciding. It was hard! One of us picked the palate cleanser (mojito) that's not officially part of the flight. Another picked the mango and passionfruit sorbet which was DELISH. I was not a fan of the chocolate peppermint (tastes how you would expect, but that's more kid-like than my palate). But everything else was yummy. Was hard to pick two, but I got the CARBON FIBER, which is cold brew and nutella. I don't normally like coffee ice cream, though I love coffee. They did a great job explaining each flavor and walking us through everything they offered with samples. And all of the ice cream was delicious! I ended up getting the straw hat and the beret. Absolutely love all An's gelatos locations. This one is my go-to because it's closer to me and it never has the crazy line that the Dry Cleaning one has. I love how friendly the staff is, chatting with you as you go through their signature flavor tour. Follow them on instagram to see their current flavors as they rotate quite frequently! My favorites are cotton (horchata-esque) and leather/full grain leather (brown butter). And pho (sounds crazy but it's literally the best ever)!!! Please bring that back Their flavors never miss; they have such unique ones and really take care into putting authentic ingredients and even partner with local businesses to source their ingredients. I came by on a Friday afternoon (12:40pm) with my brother & surprisingly there wasn't anyone in line! The interior was a little dark, it made it feel like they weren't exactly open or had lighting issues. This time I went with a small cup of the Carbon Fiber & the Full Grain Leather. Usually I would skip the full grain leather which is their brown butter + brookie (brownie cookie) gelato-- but this time it was very flavorful and delicious. The carbon fiber is their cold brew and Nutella gelato! This one had a strong cold brew with a light Nutella-- this time around there wasn't hard chunks of Nutella which was nice to eat. My brother chose the Mixmaster and Beanie. Mixmaster (butter, salt, vanilla) is one of their newer holiday flavors (that you can pair with their house made caramel apple cider!!) -- it is simple, but oh so good! Beanie is starting to be a classic flavor imo, it is their Nutella Bread Pudding + Vanilla Cream. This flavor is not over done or super heavy. The coconut and cherry ones tasted highly artificial (tasted like coconut extract as opposed to infusing the cream with coconut flakes and then straining out the coconut). The brown butter/cookie flavor (I think it's called leather) was good at first, but left a great film in your mouth (I think they didn't adjust the recipe down in heavy cream/fat content to make up for the added butter). I tried the seasonal strawberry matcha (kasa) and banana matcha (poke beru). The strawberry had a mild flavor of strawberry with zero notes of matcha, and the banana matcha had a mild matcha flavor with zero hint of banana. I've had another flavor before that's not currently on the menu that was really good and had flavors true to its name, so I'm not sure why these two flavors lacked so much. Side note: the "flavor tour" they ask EVERY single customer if they want to go on, can cause what would be a 5 minute wait to turn into a 25 minute wait. An's Hatmakers gelato shop located in the Del Mar Plaza with plenty of parking in the lot but gratis for the first hour. A couple days ago, I did go to the Opening Day at Del Mar Racetrack and saw the Hat Contest which was a visual spectacle. In keeping with the hat theme this weekend, a visit to An's Hatmakers seemed like the next step. Taking the hatmaker theme from the business that formerly held the space, is what An's claim of fame is all about besides their creative yummy gelatos. Last night after dinner at Lana, I passed on dessert at the restaurant so I can visit An's and try new gelato flavors. There was a line and I waited patiently, luckily not too long. When I stepped inside the shop, I noticed wall shelves of hats, mostly fedoras and some hat boxes as the interior decor. There are some indoor seating as well as outdoor seating. The staff of servers behind the counter were all busy describing flavors and contents but what caught my attention was that all staffers except one did NOT wear gloves, which is a total turn off. The only staffer wearing gloves was Amory and she kept her area neat and clean, so I wanted her scooping my gelato! Amory was friendly helpful and patient. Was lucky to have gelato scooped out of brand new and fresh batch of gelato containers. Amory even got new scooping spoons to ease my mind. I got to sample all the gelato flavors before deciding on the Fedora a tiramisu with cognac flavor which I found was a tad too sweet. Additionally, I got the Basco Cap which includes roasted pistachios, lemon ricotta on a waffle cone. These two flavors were creative and delightful, even my pup Fendi enjoyed the gelato and their homemade waffle cones. The inside of the shop was too stuffy hot, as if there wasn't any air conditioning such a very uncomfortable ambiance. After I got my gelato, took pics, I had to walked outside for fresh air. I felt sorry for the staffers having to work under such uncomfortable heat. Most customers felt uncomfortable inside and also left after getting their gelato. If management can correct the issues I mentioned: reducing the excessive sweetness of the gelato flavors, the serving staffers should wear gloves and keeping the room temperature cooler perhaps this shop would score a higher rating. For some reason, a friend and I decided to get gelato before a work out class. An's Hatmakers made the perfect preworkout. Just like all of the An's locations, An's Hatmakers was decorated so adorably. They really lean into the theme. We did the flight tester of all of the current flavors, and wow they all tasted amazing! The employee scooping gelato was also so sweet. Unfortunately, I forgot to snap a pic of the menu but I love the concept of a rotating menu! During this visit, they offered Visor (pistachio), Blackberry (a berry sorbet), Lingerie (strawberry and chocolate), Cottondoodle (snickerdoodle and rice pudding), White (Greek yogurt and berries), a chocolate flavor which I forgot the name of, and their mojito-reminiscent palate cleanser. After trying all of the available flavors, my favorites were Lingerie, Blackberry, and Visor. We ended up sharing a large size of Blackberry and Visor- an unlikely delicious flavor combo. I've heard this place really has the best gelato in the country and I was a little hesitant after not having been much of a fan of the flavors at An's dry cleaning branch but the flavors here were so different and very much my vibe. The dark chocolate (burlap) which was a proper dark midnight chocolate flavor was lovely. We also tasted that cotton doodle one with that cinnamon flavor in it and it was a delicious gelato. Didn't go ahead with the scoop though because we knew the cinnamon would get too strong for us personally. The other one we had was a tiramisu flavor which apparently had actual alcohol in it and was a mascarpone base gelato. read more

I enjoyed that the staff took us on a "tour" of all the available flavors. I was debating between flavors while in line and the samples definitely helped to narrow down what I liked. I also like that you can pick two flavors even for a small scoop. read more

Came here since I had to attend an event in the same plaza. Upon entering there wasn't a line and the employee working was very nice and gave us a sample of each flavor! we didn't even have to ask for samples, which made us feel very welcomed. My personal favorite was "White". Which Greek yogurt with berries. All the flavors were really good though, "Straw Hat" would have been my second choice. The decor was nice as well! One of the best Gelato I've had in a while and love that they keep them in the metal tubs. read more

The service was great. There surprisingly wasn't a line today. The decor inside is so cute! Plenty of street parking. We were taken on a flavor tour and Omgggg yumm!! I'm so excited that I finally got around to trying this location. I live near An's dry cleaning and have tried that one. The flavors today were so yummy! The mango passion fruit was super refreshing and so rich in flavor. I decided to order the visor (pistachio) and Coppola. The Coppola had big yummy pieces of dark chocolate cookies... it was to die for. I regret not getting a bigger bowl lol. I'll definitely be back to try more of their yummy rotating flavors! read more
