Handmade sign posted inside above the gelato/ordering counter
    Nicole G.

I had mentioned to my bf that I was in the mood for something sweet to end our night. We headed downstairs of the plaza and he immediately pointed out this gelato shop and informed me that the line has been non stop out the door since we arrived to the plaza for happy hour. I figured it must be good so I took a shot on it. I was surprised to hear my bf wanted to try as well since he isn't much of a desserts person, so that's saying something! Although the line was out the door, I'd say we only waited about 10 minutes. We did notice the line growing even more so as we inched closer to ordering and upon our departure. It's super cold inside! They've got the AC blowing at 60 degrees, but for fair reason. Not much seating is available inside, but what they do have is great for two or three couples and slightly larger group. There are a couple of tables right out front as well. You can also find a stand up fridge with ready to go pints if you're interested in more volume or a shorter wait time! The lovely young lady asked if it was our first time visiting so she offered us their tasting flight of all the flavors. Even their cleansing palette flavor was delicious (tasted similar to a mint mojito). Everything was so tasty, it's hard to have a favorite. But I was happy to know you can get 2 flavors, no matter the size ordered!! What we ordered: Large Cup of Straw Hat (5/5) - this flavor will be the mango and passion fruit. She offered to top it off with tajin, so how could we decline?! It was beyond fresh and juicy of a flavor. Not too icy, the consistency was beautiful. It really was a delightful treat for the transitioning weather. Complimented the sunset well. Small Cup of Leather and Visor (5/5) - leather is supposed to be a brown butter + chocolate chip cookie flavor while the visor is a roasted pistachio. It practically melts together and gives a balanced nutty, malty, yet creamy experience. The chunks of cookie in the leather just elevated each bite and adds that desired texture. I liked that the cookie bits inside weren't all uniform. Honestly I feel like any of the flavors would pair nicely together. They are not overly sweet, it's pretty natural and subtle. Definitely a play on your ordinary flavors though, which I could appreciate. For example, they have a cookies n cream but they added Nutella. The vanilla flavor includes cinnamon and salted butter. The Dubai chocolate was definitely more chocolate forward and rich, but such a solid flavor that you can't go wrong. Overall, this spot is definitely worth the wait. I feel like they have an option for everyone and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. I'd definitely return and absolutely recommend to others. What a perfect way to enjoy a yummy treat being right across the ocean. FYI: small cup was $6.65 and large $7.75 but keep in mind you're allowed 2 flavors for any size!

A delicious gelato spot with great service, but be prepared to wait! They have unique flavor names that are all hatmaker themed, and they are constantly rotating. Before we ordered our gelato, the worker gave us a tour of all the flavors and their descriptions, allowing us to sample each one before choosing. While the process definitely makes the line longer, I really enjoyed trying all the flavors. I ended up picking the straw hat flavor, which was a mango passionfruit sorbet that was refreshingly tart. I came on a Sunday afternoon, and we had to wait in line for around 45 minutes. I wish there were more shaded areas on the sidewalk where the line was. The area has a lot of cute shops and it is a short walk to the beach, making jt a great stop for a beach hangout!

Definitely worth the visit. Expect long lines but also expect good service as you are offered the entire flight of flavors with descriptions of the ice creams/sorbets. Cool interior, wish there was more seating room but can see how it can get stuffy if there were more chairs as the lines back up quickly.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I absolutely would!!! We came here with a group of friends who love this spot, so expectations were already high. They were excited before we even walked in because this place is known for having lines out the door and has been voted the #1 ice cream/gelato shop in America two years in a row. Somehow, we timed it perfectly and walked right in. From the moment we stepped inside, it felt fun, welcoming, and totally unique. Instead of just picking a flavor, they take you through a full tasting experience. We were greeted right away, and the girl helping us was amazing, walking us through each flavor, explaining what made it special, and helping us discover what we liked. And I have to call this out because I loved it... they use real metal spoons for the tastings instead of plastic. It sounds small, but it makes the whole experience feel so much more elevated and thoughtful. They start you off with a lime palate cleanser (which honestly could've been a full order on its own, it was that good), and then you get to taste everything. The flavors are all named after hats, which makes it even more fun. We tried: * Straw-Hat (mango & passion fruit) * Fascinator (strawberry sorbet) * Mixmaster (salted butter, cinnamon, vanilla) * Leather (brown butter & cookies) * Coppola (cookies & cream with Nutella) * Visor (roasted pistachio) * CA Snapback (Dubai chocolate) Every single one was so good. They were also incredibly thoughtful about my daughter's tree nut allergy and made sure she could safely try all but three flavors. What surprised me the most was how much we loved the fruit flavors. I don't usually go for those, but the mango and strawberry were next level. You can tell they're made with real fruit. So fresh and full of flavor. Another thing I loved is that you can split flavors within a single scoop, which made it even more fun to try more combinations. We ended up getting: * Straw-Hat / Fascinator (small cup) * CA Snapback / Straw-Hat * CA Snapback / Strawberry * And the BEST one... Leather / Fascinator in a waffle cone That waffle cone... easily the best I've ever had. Not too chewy, not too crispy, just perfect. We took our gelato outside and ate it overlooking the Del Mar ocean, which just made the whole experience even better. This place lives up to the hype and then some. It's thoughtful, creative, and genuinely one of the best dessert experiences I've had. We will absolutely be back again and again!

Love the gelato here, even though I've been many times I usually try the samples I mean why not it's great. Fruit flavors are the best in my opinion, but really can't go wrong here. Also I think they choose a great location since the sq ft is small they hopefully won't close anytime soon, good business decision!

5 stars all across the board. An's is PERFECT! Helen and I were in line for about 40 minutes which honestly wasn't bad at all! This particular selection for February flavors was one of the hardest to order from because they were all amazing. If you get the chance to go, here's the flavor combos we got and liked! * Poke-Beru (Matcha Banana) & Broken Heart Brocade (Chocolate Raspberry) * Straw-Hat (Mango) & Kasa (Matcha Strawberry) So so perfect. And the flavor tour was so fun as always, I love chatting w/ the workers and finding out their favorites too. Every An's is perfect and Hatmakers might be my new favorite location.

Ok I've been to all of their other locations and this one is consistently the nicest service, best parking, AND NO LINE!! No complaints! I went back in December and I know their ice creams are delicious year round but I'd give their seasonal apple cider float a million stars. I can eat it every day for the rest of my life. Sooo good!

I'm so glad I finally got to try this award winning place! The hat shop was so cute, the workers were very kind and friendly, and the little plaza it's a part of is so beautiful on a sunny day! I got the Kasa (strawberry ice cream with matcha cake from local bakery, Paru) and Broken Heart Brocade (triple chocolate ice cream with a raspberry swirl). The small is a little over $7 which is pricey but they do give a fair amount and it's a good way to treat yourself! The Kasa flavor was really great--the strawberry ice cream had a perfect tartness to it and the matcha cake had a deep matcha flavor and wasn't too dry! But the broken heart brocade was even better! The chocolate ice cream was decadent without being too much, the raspberry swirl was a nice balance to its sweetness and it had these chunks of chocolate brownie-like pieces that were chewy and sweet and such a chef's kiss! Both flavors were creamy too! I just wish I had one closer to me in LA/OC!

An's Hatmakers Gelato absolutely lives up to the hype. The staff were incredibly kind and informative, and they let me sample all the flavors -- which made choosing even harder because every single one was amazing. They really knew their flavors too, which made the experience even better. I love that they rotate some flavors regularly, so there's always something new to try (guess I'll just have to keep coming back). The gelato itself was super creamy, flavorful, and had such fun, well-balanced combinations. Definitely worth the visit if you're a gelato lover. You can park in the structure for free up to a hour.

Visor (roasted pistachio) and bere (vanilla, caramel, white chocolate)
    Natalie Y.

Pistachio is very strong. Just like eating the nut. No artificial flavoring. Lots of chunks, great for texture. Soooo delicious and not too sweet! We also chose the vanilla with white chocolate and caramel. it wasnt as sweet as i thought and paired very well with the pistachio. I've been to an's electronics repair so i know it's always a fun tasting experience coming here. I look forward to the flavor tours every time! service is great and they do a thorough job in explaining the flavors and business model. inside only has a few seating spots. Like maybe 4 or 5 tables with chairs. but people generally finish their ice cream quickly.

    Small Beret and straw hat
    Gerina O.

There's parking in the structure under the plaza. It can get really busy though, so be prepared to fight for your parking spot. The first hour is free but there's a charge for every hour after and they will ask for a credit card when you enter the structure and you have to swipe the same card when you leave. An's Hatmakers is on the first floor. The line was really long when we went on a Saturday around sunset. When we finally got up to the counter the service was amazing. They did a great job explaining each flavor and walking us through everything they offered with samples. And all of the ice cream was delicious! I ended up getting the straw hat and the beret. There's some tables in the store but they're better for small parties and it can get crowded. Would definitely come back but next time I'll be prepared for the wait.

Located just across the way from the beach, great spot to get some delicious ice cream. This is one of a few locations but this one is all about the hats. The decor and overall feel inside was nice. The man that assisted us was amazing. We opted for the full experience and tried all of them. You truly can't go wrong with any of the flavors. We opted for the SnapBack and visor. So good. Oh and def park in the parking structure since it gets crazy around there.

I was prepared for a line but the wait wasn't too long on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm. We parked in the adjacent structure. First hour was free and we made it just under the hour. We were able to try all the flavors before making a decision. The Visor (roasted pistachio) and Leather (brown butter + chocolate chip cookie) were my favorites but I had to share with the hubby who always gets chocolate so CA SnapBack it was. Every flavor was delicious, so smooth and creamy. Really enjoyed the waffle cone as well, it wasn't too sweet. I was hoping to try a matcha but the flavor was not releasing until the week after. 2 flavors in a waffle cone, get it and thank me later.

She ordered the vegan tropical flavor (passion fruit, mango, pineapple, and more)--bright, fresh, and bursting with real fruit taste. I went with the classic chocolate. We were both pleasantly surprised by how perfectly it hit all the marks of great gelato: that wonderful gooey stretch, incredible richness, ultra-creamy texture, and flavors that were spot-on and deeply satisfying. No icy bits, no ice cream "claiming" to be gelato, just pure enjoyment in every spoonful. The portions were generous, the service friendly, clean ambiance, and the timing couldn't have been better for a quick, uplifting treat. We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. Really enjoyed the stracciatella and the charcoal vanilla. The chai latte is pretty tasty as well. I think other gelato spots in San Diego county do gelato a bit better, specifically Gelato Vero in Mission Hills--the gelato is simply creamier and less ice-cream-textured. But Gelato 101 isn't bad by any means, and is certainly refreshing and tasty. It's worth trying if you're in the mood and in the area. Plenty of flavor options and lots of espresso drinks available too. Update: Came by today once more to try the chai latte with coconut milk this time. Also tried biscoff & coffee gelato. Both were pretty good. Still what I'd consider a 4/5 chai latte and gelato, but the atmosphere here is really so good. There were people of all ages and families coming in and out and hanging around. It's still a very vibey nice spot.

The parking lot was pretty empty. It was a bit of a cool night and there was no line. I looked at the different flavors and there were a few. I opted for a soft serve. I just got the plain vanilla, but had it dipped in the butterscotch shell because I was feeling nostalgic for the dipped cones I had as a child. The woman helping us was patient while we made up our minds. I needed napkins as it started dripping immediately, even through the thick coating. We sat at the tables outside and ate our cones. The butterscotch tasted ok but it was really thick and waxy so I didn't finish it. If I were in the area i might come back and get ice cream or soft serve again but skip the dip.

We always see Nicole there and she deserves a huge shout out--she is absolutely amazing. So kind, so attentive, and always going the extra mile and offering all the samples and making the whole experience feel special. You can tell she genuinely cares, and it makes such a difference. My favorite flavors here are the Chocolate Gooey Brownie, PB & Jelly Pound Cake, and their cereal series in March. SOOOO good every time!

I have never been to this area and it was quite a cute place. We went there fairly late, so all the stores were already closed. I think we had about 10 minutes before closing. The staff was attentive and friendly. They have such unique flavors: Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper Pear and Blue Cheese Arbequina Olive Oil Honey Lavender Some of the ones I expected to not like but did and vice versa. We all got 2 scoops/2 flavors: 1. Arbequina Olive Oil - I was very surprised that I loved this so much. It was rich, yet creamy, it is something that sounds like it might not taste good, but it was so delicious. 5/5 2. Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons- I think this is the best seller. My oh My oh MY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a huge fan of ice cream and I can say right now this is my favorite flavor of all time. Creamy, sweet and salty, just divine. I would give this a 10/5. LOL My niece got: 1.Arbequina Olive Oil - My niece also loved this flavor 5/5 2.Raspberry White Chocolate Cheesecake- I think they even liked this one more than the Olive Oil one. 5/5 My sister got: 1.Raspberry White Chocolate Cheesecake- My sister is NOT a fan at all of white chocolate, but she noted this one was incredibly good. 5/5 2.Chocolate Gooey Brownie- My sister said this was delicious, chocolate flavor but not too sweet. 4.5/5 I will definitely be visiting this chain. I have seen other flavors that I can't wait to try! Staff was super friendly and patient despite them about to close for the night. Service: 5/5 Food: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5

Went with the 4 Scoop Sampler again, $8~ - Black Raspberry…read moreChocolate Chunk and Coffee Chocolate Chip. We had these two flavors last time and they were so good we decided to order it again! I particularly like the black raspberry one... It's slightly sweeter reminding me of the days where I'd eat this flavor with my dad. So I enjoyed it and i love the generous amounts of chocolate chunk! My aunt however, said it was too sweet for her-- I forgot to mention to her that this is black raspberry so the profile is much diff than a red raspberry would be. The Coffee Chip one is not as creamy as other coffee flavored ice cream. But the coffee comes out strong and it tastes good with this sort of chocolate pieces! The chocolate is thin enough that it doesn't out shine the coffee. We also had the Orange Dream Cream, a classic orange creamsicle flavor. It was almost slightly icy, although I didn't mind it too much. The orange sherbet was good (a tad sweet, no biggie) and the creamy vanilla was just delicious. We also ordered Peppermint Bark, as the guy working said it was a better choice out of the two options. I'm glad we went with this because it sure was delicious. It was like mint and chip ice cream, but with peppermint instead. The festive colors were fun! They gotten better on making sure the scoops all had the same quantity. I am happy about that because now you're getting bang for your buck! I think this sampler plate is worth it if you're planning on sharing or want to eat multiple flavors from their large menu.

[Parking]: The garden has a small private parking lot and there were still few parking spots available at 2:30 PM on Saturday. [Bunny Encounters & Price]: Our party booked a 30-minute bunny session ahead of our visit. For reservations, they offer a 20-minute session for $22 per person or a 30-minute session for $25 per person. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows. Reservations are recommended on weekends. [Bunny Experience]: The garden has one window counter for ordering coffee drinks and another counter for bunny sessions. Our party arrived on time, waited in line, and ended up 5 minutes late to our scheduled session. The staff instructed us not to pick up the bunnies and our party had to wear shoe covers before entering the pens. During the session, our party was able to ask the staff as many leaves as we want. Personally, I found the experience a bit underwhelming because (1) I was only able to get the bunnies' attention with leaves and (2) since visitors can't pick up the bunnies, the only activities our party could do were feeding them and watching them eat leaves. There is also a small house with baby bunnies. [Menu]: After the bunny session was over, our party walked up to the window counter and ordered coffee drinks. The top highlighted drinks include The Gardener and The Florist (ceremonial unsweetened organic matcha with rose). Iced drinks 16 oz only. They also sell pizza here. *** The Gardener (organic espresso with honey, lavender, and vanilla - iced 16 oz - $7.50): The drink tasted a bit sweeter than I would have preferred. *** The garden has a good first-date vibe, but personally this is a one-and-done spo. I was disappointed that visitors can't pick up the bunnies even if they hop onto your lap. I recommend sticking with the 20-minute session rather than the 30-minute session for the feeding and petting experience. Also the coffee drink I had was mediocre at best.
